Margaret Sterling
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Cannon Sterling, 77, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in the Bailey Mortuary Chapel with Father Karl Daigle officiating. Burial will follow at Springhill Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary.
Visitation will be held from 3 until 6:30 p.m. today. The Rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Bailey Mortuary Chapel.
Mrs. Sterling was a resident of this area for 53 years. She was born Aug. 19, 1924 to Abraham and Barbara Khoury Cannon in Monroe. She graduated from Neville High School in Monroe. She was active in the Civic Club along with many other organizations, owner of Columbia Cafe and Sterling Real Estate and a very active member of Sacred Heart Cathlic Church, Eucharistic Minister, Ladies Auxiliary and other community activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Abraham and Barbara Khoury Cannon; her husband Pete Sterling; brothers and sisters, Fahearn Cannon, Menier Cannon, Victoria Cannon and Madeline Cannon Namie.
She is survived by her children, Jimmy Sterling of Lafayette, Allen Sterling, Patricia Sterling, both of Dallas, Texas , Floyd Sterling and wife Gaye of Haughton, Barbara Jo "JoJo" Pease of Houston, Texas ; grandchildren, Floyd Barham Sterling Jr., Eva Nicole Sterling, Jamie Elizabeth Sterling; and a host of neices and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Keith Thomas, Anthony Manuel, John Slatter, Steve Rutledge, Skip Grillot and Clyde Green. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Hanish, Dr. J.E. Rutledge, Richard Johnson , Jake Harp, Dr. Russell Pavich, Don Cooper and Frank Martin.
Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Springhill.

Jeanne Lawe
Graveside services for Jeanne Hurtle Lawe, 48, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Father Phillip Pazhayakar officiating.
Visitation will be held beginning at 4 p.m. today, June 10, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lawe, a native of Hampton Va., and a resident of Minden for 14 years, Passed away Friday, June 7 in Minden. She was an inventory clerk for Fibrebond Corp.
She is survived by her husband, James Lawe of Minden; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hurtle of Minden; one son, Thomas Lamar Pulley of Bossier City; two step-sons, Kenneth Lawe and James Anthony Lawe of South Dakota; two step-daughters, Whitney Lawe of Ringgold and Tammy A. Lawe of Witchita, Kan.; one sister, Cheryl Anne Doren of California; and one brother, Roger W. Hurtle Jr. and wife Susan of Doyline.

Annie May Bradford
Funeral services for Annie May Bradford will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at the Patterson Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at Mayflower Cemetery.
Visitation will be held today, June 10 with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gregory Ferrell
Funeral services for Gregory Ferrell will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Patterson Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Homer.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 14 with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Maxine J. Carney
Funeral services for Maxine J. Carney, 85, were to be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Corsicana, Texas , with B.F. Risinger officiating.
Mrs. Carney, a resident of Longview, Texas , and formerly of Corsicana Passed away June 2 in a Longview Nursing Center.
Mrs. Carney was born Dec. 11, 1916 in Oil City to Edward R. and Estella Watson Jordan. She was a medical laboratory technician and longtime employee of the Sperry-Rand Ammuntion Plant in Minden. Mrs. Carney served as a former Miss Longview during the 1930s.
She is survived by two nephews, Larry Jordan of Atlanta, Ga., and Abbott Lee Jordan of Memphis, Tenn.; niece Candy Kirkwood of Corsicana; great nephew Cory Kirkwood of Corsicana; and great-niece Keri Kirkwood of Dallas, Texas .

Helena Elshout
Funeral services for Mrs. Helena Dymphina Maria "Lenie" VandenOord Elshout, 83, will be held at 10 a.m. today, June 10, 2002 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minden with Father Karl Daigle officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden under the dirction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home.
Visitation was held Sunday, June 9, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Elshout, a resident of Minden, Passed away at her residence on Friday, June 7, after an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 31, 1918, in Nieuwkuijk, Holland. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, where she had been active in the Ladies' Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Leo M.J. Elshout; parents Gerritt and Theodora VanBeurden VandenOord; two brothers, Jan VandenOord and Martin VandenOord; and sister Maria VandenOord Meines.
She is survived by a sister, Betsy VandenOord VanHappen and husband Ton of Holland; five children, Jerry Elshout and wife Mary of Baton Rouge, Martin Elshout and wife Kakie of Ruston, Tommy Elshout and wife Janita of Minden, Maria Elshout Powell and husband Alan of Bossier City, Mike Elshout and wife Jan of Minden; nine grandchildren, Debbie Elshout Roberts and husband Dale of Baton Rouge, Tracey Elshout Ballard and husband Brent of Baton Rouge, Sarah Elshout of Ruston, Scott Elshout and wife Terrie of McKinney, Texas , Wes and Bryan Powell of Bossier City, Michael Elshout and wife Dana of Minden, Candice and Gretchen Elshout of Minden; two great-grandchildren, Anna Roberts of Baton Rouge and Sydney Elshout of Minden; and numerous nieces and nephews including Marcel VandenOord and wife Carla of Minden.

Lillian Moulder
Funeral services for Lillian Diane Moulder, 90, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Rehobeth Baptist Church in Pelahatchie, Miss., with the Rev. Jerry Barnes and the Rev. John Carter officiating. Services are under the direction of Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Morton, Miss.
Visitation will be held today, June 10, at the funeral home.
Ms. Moulder, a native of Pelahatchie, Passed away Sunday, June 9, after a courageous battle with many illnesses. She was a resident of the Lorena Community for 40 years before spending her last 18 months as a resident of Sibley. She was a faithful member of Goodwater Baptist Church. She will be missed by many.
She is survived by her brother, Charles Shed of Hattiesburg, Miss.; four sisters, Jewel Bates and husband Claude of Goshen Springhs, Bernice Wilkes of Mesa, Ariz., Ruth Logan of Rehobeth, Dorothy Hartford and husband Ewell of Jackson , Miss.; two sons, Russell Myers and wife Gloria of Pelahatchie, Ray Myers and wife Pat of Sibley; two daughters, Patricia Rodgers of Haughton, Elizabeth Hodges and husband Charles of Natches, Miss.; one step-son, Gerald Moulder of Ovett, Miss; 10 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Frank Martin, Jeff Myers, Mark Purvis, Steve Hodges, Randy Moulder, Russ Moulder, Kenny Cichocki and Rodney Myers.

Meta Butler
Graveside services for Mrs. Meta Jeriline "Jerry" Barnes Butler, 69, were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 3, 2002, with the Rev. Charles Pate officiating and the Rev. Deborah Woods assisting. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Myrtle Maness; two brothers, Ralph Maness and A.L. Maness and husband Alfred Butler.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Randy Stewart; special grandson, Jason Stewart; one son; two sisters, Shirley Maness and Iris Grigsby, both of Minden; two brothers, Buster Maness of Smith's Grove, Ky., and Ted Maness of Little Rock, Ark.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Scott Maness; Monty Barnes; Jimmy Mathis; Stacy Malham; Larry Milam and Randy Stewart.

Johnny Gavin
Funeral services for Mr. Johnny Mack Gavin will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Mt. Comfort Baptist Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Mt. Comfort Cemetery under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Gavin Passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, at 9:39 a.m. at Christus Schumpert-Highland Hospital in Shreveport, following a brief illness. He was born May 31, 1938, where he was the third son of 14 children born to James and Annie Gavin.
He grew up and spent his entire childhood in the Couchwood Community. At an early age, he joined Greenville Baptist Church, where he was a diligent member. Upon graduating from Webster High School in 1959, he moved to Chicago, Ill., where he began his life of employment. In 1961, he married Ozella Jenkins-Gavin, of which two children were born.
While in Chicago, he worked for The Chicago Transit Authority from 1973 to 1998 where he held several titles such as line instructor, trainer and other noted positions. In November 1991, he married Willie Mae Brutus-Gaven, upon his retirement, he made his home with her in Minden.
He was a faithful member of the Sons of Light Masonic Lodge #145 in Chicago, where he served as Wishful Master #32.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Joseph Gavin; one sister, Betty McClendon; and his parents.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife; two daughters, Regina Gavin-Brown and husband Dr. Gregory Brown of Country Club Hills, Ill., and Remona Gavin of Chicago; Ozella Jenkins-Gavin of Chicago, the mother of his children; one granddaughter, Judae'a Jamell Brown; five step-children, Melvin Brutus and wife Gretchen of Los Angeles, Calif., Jimmy Calloway of St. Louis, Mo., Anton Calloway and wife Sarah of Sibley, Freddie Calloway and Sita Calloway of Minden; a special "daughter," De'Forya Calloway of Minden; five brothers, Oscar Gavin of Chicago, James Gavin and wife Essie of Cotton Valley, Levoid Gavin and wife Versia, Onette Gavin and wife Doris, and Freddie Gavin and wife Mary, all of Couchwood; five sisters, Elizabeth Thurmond and husband James, and Terri Gavin, both of Chicago, Resie Herbert and Gertrude Rice and husband Ellis, both of Minden, and Carrie Gavin of Couchwood; 12 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.

Carrie Green
Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Moaty Green will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Homer with Dr. Robby D. Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Green Passed away Friday, Sept. 27, in Shreveport after a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 15, 1900 in Claiborne Parish. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church for more than 60 years.
She is survived by her son, Johnny Green of Minden; two grandchildren, Marilyn Cooksey and Ricky Martin, both of Minden; three great-grandchildren, Chequella Walker and husband Michael; and Ja'Lyncia Cooksey and LaNeisha Cooksey, all of Minden. She took in and made them feel as though they were her own two very special people, Arzie Martin of St. Paul, Minn., and Roger Edwards of Detroit, Mich. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and a community who loved her throughout the years.

Leon Hardy
Graveside services for Leon "Dit" Hardy will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Sheppard Street Cemetery under the direction of Kennon and Sons Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, prior to services.
Mr. Hardy, a native of Minden, Passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, in Houston, Texas . He was a deacon of New Light Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was born Dec. 25, 1917.
He is survived by four daughters, Bernice Smith, Betty Bars, Jacquelin Campbell, all of Houston, and Gwendolyn Washington of Minden; one son, Crichton Odom of Houston; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Louvilla Sibley
Memorial services for Mrs. Louvilla Wilson Sibley, 79, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 3, 2002, at Patterson Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery in Minden.
Mrs. Sibley Passed away Thursday, Sept. 26. She was born Feb. 28, 1923.
She is survived by two sisters, Frankie L. Mitchell and Rodessa Wilson; one brother, Vincent K. Wilson of Minden and a host of relatives and friends.

Thomas Armstrong
Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Robert Armstrong, 75, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Bailey Funeral Home in Springhill with the Rev. Michael Methvin officiating. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Mr. Armstrong, a resident of Greenwell Springs, Passed away Friday, Sept. 27, following a lengthy illness. He had been a resident of the Baton Rouge area for 35 years, of the Baptist faith and was a retired chef for an off-shore company food service. He was also a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
He was preceded in death by his son, Chuck Armstron; brothers, Huey P. Armstrong, Howard Armstrong and wife Helen; Raymond Armstrong and a sister, Helen Parish.
He is survived by his life mate, Helen Perry of Greenwell Springs; daughter, Barbara Gail Hayden of Skyhook Okla.; son, Roger Dale Armstrong of Muskogee, Okla.; five grandchildren; nieces, Ludie Todd and Ruth Mixon; nephew, Paul Armstrong, all of Minden; eight step-children; a host of step-grandchildren; and other nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Vince Rispone, Justin Armstrong, Troy Mixon, Leroy Mixon, Russell Perry, Robert Perry and Josh Hayden.

Tracy Arthur
Mrs. Tracy Ghelli Arthur, 48, Passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 in Heflin. She was a homemaker. She was born in Milford, Mass.
She is survived by her husband, Harry Arthur of Cibolo, Texas ; mother, June Ghelli of Heflin; sons, Jeremy Arthur, Brian Arthur, and Joshua Arthur, all of Cibolo, and Wayne Arthur of Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters, Tara Dawson of Heflin, and Mary Ellan Ghelli of Worcheta, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jonnie Sloan
Funeral services for Mrs. Jonnie Mae Gilcrease Sloan, 79, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. David Frizzelle, pastor of New Life Fellowship Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sloan, a native of Tiago and a resident of Minden, Passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, in Minden. She was a homemaker and a resident of Minden for 42 years. She was employed at Piggly Wiggly for 20 years and was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and best friend, Richard "Dick" Sloan; parents, John and Audie Gilcrease; and sisters, Josie Page and Jewell Glenn.
She is survived by her children, Richard Bruce Sloan and wife Annie of Kentucky; Donna Sloan Bradley and husband Robert of Minden; Jacqueline Sloan Dana of Minden; brothers, John Gilcrease Jr. and wife Mary Jane of Tiago; James B. Gilcrease and wife Pat of Ft. Smith, Ark., and Jack Gilcrease of Libuse; sisters, Jessie Barkddall and husband Willie of Channelview, Texas , Jerrose Stillers of Arizona and special sister, Joye Stoneking and late husband Robert E. Stoneking of Minden; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Thomas Boliew
Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Jerry Boliew, 64, were to be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 1, 2002, at Tapp Funeral Home in Buford, Ga.
Mr. Boliew, a resident of Sugar Hill, Ga., Passed away Saturday, Sept. 28. He was a native of Haynesville, a graduate of LSU, was a chemical engineer with AMEC and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Boliew of Sugar Hill; daughter, Victoria A. Boliew of Pensacola, Fla.; son, Thomas Mathew Boliew of Tallahassee, Fla.; step-daughter, Leighanna Pool of Jackson ville, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Jackie Lee and Joyce Boliew of Homer; three grandchildren, Max, Christopher Sean and Jessica Margaret.
