Lucia

Joseph Anthony Lucia, Sr. passed away on Aug. 21 5:30 AM. Lucia was a retired staff reporter and photographer for The Times-Picayune for 40 years (1937-1977). He was also the publisher, editor, and owner editor of the weekly paper, L'Observateur in St. John the Baptist Parish. He was 88 years old.

Lucia was a native of Lutcher, Louisiana and resided in LaPlace, Louisiana. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eula Vedros Lucia; 2 sons and daughters -in-law, Joseph Lucia, Jr. and Shelia Lucia, Ellis Lucia and Bevil Knapp; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Lucia Austin and Michael Austin; eight grandchildren, Laura Lucia Wear, Joseph Lucia III, Leigh Lucia Hoover, Charles Lucia, Kacie Mendoza, Dominick Lucia, Rebecca Austin Reed and Rachel Austin; six great-grandchildren, Blaine Wear, Jr., Breck Wear, Joshua Hoover, Ryan Hoover, Adam Hoover, Noah Hoover; a sister, Madeline Lucia Sexton; God-children, Lester Sexton, Morris Lucia, Jr., JoAnn Poche' and Charlotte Petersen. Preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Josephine Lucia, a brother, Morris Lucia, Sr., and a sister Concetta Lucia Lambert.

He was a graduate of Tulane University of School of Journalism, a member of Riverlands Golf and Country Club, Knights of Columbus and Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church.

Mass was held on Aug. 24 at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, 1809 Greenwood Drive, LaPlace; followed buy burial in St. Joseph's Mausoleum, Paulina, Louisiana.

Madere

CM/Sgt. Harold Charles Madere (Little Buddy Green), age 81, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died on Aug. 7 Madere was born in Hahnville on Feb. 11, 1921, to Emile and Rena Kinler Madere. He had been a resident of the northwest Florida area for the past 30 years. He retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant with 30 years of service to his country, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Madere received numerous awards and decorations during his service. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church,a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and was honored as Knight of the Year in 1998 for his outstanding volunteer activities.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nellie Madere of Fort Walton; son and daughter-in-law Edward C. and Sue Madere of Shorewood, Wis.; daughters and sons-in-law Patricia and Richard McGrath of Fort Walton Beach, Carol and Randall Haydel of Raceland and Cindy and Jack Yanora of Palm City, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law Fred and Hilda Madere, Emile Madere, Nolan and Essie Madere, Nett and the late Robert Madere, all of Luling; sister and brother-in-law Leona and Jerry Walker of Luling, nine children and one great grandchild. He is preceded in death by sister Evelyn Hart of Gulfport, Miss.

He was buried with miliary honors in the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.

Markey

Helen “Gram” C. Markey, a resident of Boutte, died on Aug. 26 at 6:50 a.m. She was 87 years old.

Markey is survived by her sons, Joseph and Phillip Markey;, daughters Antoinette Markey, Helena August, Sylvia Markey, Joan Moore and Elaine Markey; sisters Leontine Edgerson and Mathilda Matthews, 18 children, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Joseph “Buster” Markey, parents Varise and Pauline Pierre Champagne, brothers George, Oliver and Ulysses Champagne and sisters Irma Pierre and Hazel Champagne.

Services were held on Aug. 29 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Luling followed by interment at St. Mary Cemetery in Boutte.

Pyle

Robert Pyle, a native of El Dorado, Ark. and a resident of Raceland, passed away on Aug. 21. He was 77 years old. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Guedry Pyle, son Robert Noah Pyle, daughters Alice Martin, Bess Pyle and Judith Tusler, sisters Wanda Smith and Shirley Dolden, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by parents Robert and Bertie Lawrence Pyle and sister Carrie Pyle. Robert Pyle was retired from Monsanto after 35 years of service.

A mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 26 at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Raceland. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Mary Nativity Church or any charity.

Smith

Marcel Ogden Smith of Luling passed away on Aug. 27. He was 78 years old.

Born in Eldorano, Ark. on July 3, 1924, Smith was a parishoner at West St. Charles Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Doyce Smith; children Denise Smith Harper, Lanell Smith Landry and Dr. David Smith and grandchildren Amanda and Stephanie Harper and Daniel and Ryan Landry. Funeral and burial were held in Eldorano, Ark. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to West St. Charles Baptist Church, the American Kidney Foundation or the American Alzheimer’s Association.

Troxclair

Irma Cecile St. Pé Troxclair of New Sarpy passed away on Aug. 20 at 9:21 p.m. She was 88 years old.

Beloved wife of the late Simon Troxclair, mother of Joyce Troxclair Marino of Kenner, Robert Troxclair of Houston, James Troxclair and his wife Gloria Mancuso Troxclair of Gramercy and Linda Troxclair Vicnair of Kenner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irma Nicholas and Joseph Camille St. Pé, nine brothers, nine brothers and two grandchildren, Gina Maria Troxclair and James N. Troxclair, Jr.

She is survived by 12 grandchildren: Charmaine Marino Fuijoka, Roxanne Marino, Tina Marino Berteau, Troy Marino, Theresa Troxclair Calencia, Yvonne Troxclair, Gaye Marie Troxclair Darby, Dana Troxclair, M.D., Angie Troxclair Tramonte, Darren, Simon and Jesse Vicnair, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Aug. 23 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Destrehan, followed by entombment in St. Charles Borromeo Mausoleum.

Aubert

Donald Paul Aubert passed away on Sept. 5 at 8:10 a.m. He was 67 years old. He is preceded in death by his wife Leola Jacob Aubert and parents Bertha Gueret and Albin Aubert. He is survived by his brothers, Allen, Jerry, and Herman Aubert and sister Barbara Aubert, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Reserve. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Metropolitan Hospice, 5650 Read Boulevard, New Orleans.

Brown

Kathleen Ann Blanchard “Tut Tut” “Kat” Brown passed away on Sept. 20 at 12:15 p.m. in Boutte. She was 52 years old. Wife of the late Kyle Trouth and the late Dana Kristen Brown, she is also preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Schmill Blanchard, stepfather Harry Cologne, daughter Melissa Ann Veillon and sister Loyola Ann Blanchard. She is survived by her children, Tammy Pecil, Raymond and Nicole Veillon, sisters Katherine Mehrhoff (Chertwin) and Patricia Alphonso, brother Joseph Blanchard III and three grandchildren.

Services were held on Sept. 24 at Alexander F. H. Chapel in Norco followed by interment in St. Charles Mausoleum.

Cupit

Earl Edward Cupit passed away at St. Charles Hospital on Sept. 13. He was 78 years old.

A native of Meadville, Miss. and a resident of Norco for the past 42 years, Cupit was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the retired owner/operator of Western Auto.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Wagner Cupit, daughters Linda C. Reif and husband Bill and Sandy C. Mannear and husband Scott, grandsons Josh, Zack and Matthew Reif and granddaughters Kelly and Kristen Mannear. Services were held on Sept. 14 at St. Charles United Methodist Church in Destrehan. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Rev. Mark Martin, Rev. Earline Guidry and to St. Charled United Methodist Church for all their love and support.

Hebert

Eunice Martinez Hebert passed away on Sept. 14 at 7:30 a.m. at IHS of Luling. She was 85 years old.

A native of Ascension Parish and resident of Norco, she is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hebert Sr., brothers Emile and George Martinez and sisters Frances Montaldo and Owena Mazoue and parents Camille N. Martinez and Naomie Braud. She is survived by sisters Lucille Speeg and Naomi Babin, son Howard Hebert Jr., grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Sept. 16 at HC Alexander Funeral Home in Norco, followed by interment at St. Charles Borromeo Mausoleum in Destrehan.

Lirette

Wayne P. Lirette, a native of Hahnville and resident of Laurel, Miss. passed away on Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Linda Champagne Lirette, daughters Mandy and Rachel Lirette, stepsons Dwayne and Brett Walters, mother June T. Lirette, brothers Donn, David and Randy Lirette, sisters Karen and Sharon Caillet, Tammy Puglise, Barbara Bourgeois, Angela Schexnayder and Tanya Lirette and four grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Sidney Lirette.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Oct. 7 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hahnville.

Matherne

David P. Matherne, a native of Westwego and resident of St. Charles Parish, passed away on Sept. 23 at 10:55 p.m. He was 56 years old.

A Vietnam war veteran and member of VFW Post 3750, Luling, he is survived by his wife, Barbara Tasted Matherne, father Hilman “Buster” Matherne, son Randy David Matherne, brothers Robert, Paul, Stephen and Kevin Matherne, sister Janet Lorio and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother, Annette Babin Matherne.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands, followed by interment at St. Mary Cemetery in Raceland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to West Jefferson Hospice.

Matherne

Kenneth Peter Matherne, native of Bayou Gauche and resident of Raceland, passed away on Sept. 11. He was 57 years old.

Matherne is survived by his wife, Mary Hodge Matherne, son Kenneth Charles Matherne, brothers Claude, Raymond and Keith Matherne and three grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents. Barrios and Anna Breaux Matherne, brother Glenn Matherne and sister Evelyn Minchew. A mass of Christian Burial was held on Sept. 14 at Holy Savior Catholic Church in Lockport.

Mercer

The Rev. Earl D. Mercer of Monroe passed away on Sept. 9. He was 77 years old.

Born in Winnfield on Sept. 7, 1925, he is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Fred Mercer. He preached his first sermon on Father’s Day in 1943 and was ordained by Winnfield First Baptist Church on Feb. 6, 1944. He has pastored churches in Winnfield, LaSalle, Rapides, Livingston, Sabine and Calcasieu Parishes. Services were held on Sept. 12 at the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home in Monroe. Memorials may be made to the Earl D. Mercer Endowed Scholarship Fund at Louisiana College, Box 587, Pineville, La., 71359; or the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, Box 4196, Monroe, La., 71211, or the church or charity of the donor’s choice.

Murray

Lionel “Boudreax” Murray, a native of Hahnville and resident of Marrero, passed away on Sept. 1. He was 42 years old.

Murray is survived by his mother, Evelena Johnson, devoted friend Lillie Scott, daughters Dana, Bianca and Kimberly Scott and grandchildren Hearm Triggs IV and Royneisha Scott, brother Roderick Darensbourg and sister-in-law Kim Darensbourg. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Renard and Louis Murray Jr.

Services were held on Sept. 7 at Philadeplhia Baptist Church with interment at Bethlehem Cemetery in Hahnville.

Schexnayder

Agatha Champagne Schexnayder, a native of Raceland and resident of Hahnville, passed away on Sept. 21. She was 93 years old.

She is preceded in death by two sons, Wesley and Wayne Schexnayder Sr., one granddaughter, Sheila Breaux, and eight siblings. She is survived by her son, Louie Schexnayder Sr., grandchildren Cheryl Matherne, Wayne Schexnayder Jr., David Schexnayder, Sabrina Phillips, Deidre Faucheux, Todd Schexnayder and Louie Schexnayder Jr.; sisters Amelie Madere and Marian Zeringue; brother Jean Champagne and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held yesterday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hahnville followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery.

Zeller

Nelson Paul Zeller, a native of Des Allemands and resident of Raceland, passed away on Sept. 8. He was 86 years old.

Zeller is survived by his daughters, Virgie Broussard, Verlie Whitman and Joyce Champagne, eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is preceeded in death by his wife, Enola Bourgeois Zeller, parents Alsay and Augustine Matherne Zeller, brothers Remy and O’Neil Zeller and sisters Nellie Zeller and Julie Crochet. A mass of Christian Burial was held for him yesterday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Raceland.

Blackwell

Alta “Sweetie” Winterbottom Blackwell of Destrehan passed away on Oct. 2. She was 80 years old.

Born in Lake Charles, she was a resident of St. Rose for 45 years and of Destrehan for one and a half years. She was retired as confidential assistant to the register of voters of St. Charles Parish.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter J. and Alta Romero Winterbottom, her son Charles F. Blackwell Jr. and two brothers. Walter J. Winterbottom Jr. and Timothy Winterbottom. She is survived by her sons, Claude W. Foreman Jr., Charles M. Blackwell, Patrick G. Blackwell, Walter L. Blackwell, Robert E. Blackwell and Daniel B. Blackwell, her daughter Sandra F. Schexnaydre, her brothers Daniel, Robert, Arthur and James Winterbottom, 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mass was held on Oct. 5 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner, followed by interment at St. Charles Borromeo in Destrehan.

DeSoto

Raymond “R.D.” DeSoto, a native of Luling and resident of Montegut, passed away on Oct. 7. He was 73 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel P. DeSoto, sons James and Dwayne DeSoto, daughters Judy Gravois and Susan Hodge, brother Luther DeSoto, sisters Kitty Gremillion, Rose “Doddle” Hebert, Gertrude Michot and Patsy Catania, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Telesman and Clementine Willaba DeSoto, brothers Wellman and Rudy DeSoto and sister Dorothy Ducote. Services were held on Oct. 9 at St. Anthony Church in Luling followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery.

Dutt

Vivian Alice Poirrier St. Amant Dutt passed away on Oct. 13 at Ochsner Hospital. She was 76 years old. Vivian was born in luling and lived in Norco.

A devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother, she married Dale Dutt on Sept. 13, 1947. She was active with the PTA and school activities, was skilled at making wedding cakes and handi crafts and was a source of great love and support to her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Dale R. Dutt, daughters Denise Dutt and Tina Tuveson, son-in-law Barry Tuveson, granddaughter Tyler Tuveson, sister Dora Deese Rook and her family and Aunt Jeanette Hebert.

A memorial mass was held on Oct. 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norco. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Folse

Ernest J. Folse, Sr., native of Raceland and resident of Bayou Gauche, passed away on Oct. 18 at 10:14 p.m. He was 82 years old.

Folse is survived by his wife, Grace Dufrene Folse, sons Ernest Folse, Jr. and Russell Folse, daughters Linda Billiot and Ruth Foster, 11 children and 16 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Columbus and Elvira Melancon Folse, son Ralph Folse, daughter Veronica Folse, brothers Hamilton, Lawrence, Wilson and Simon Folse and one grandchild.

Services were held on Oct. 21 at Community Assembly of God Church in Bayou Gauche, followed by interment at Sunset Cemetery.

Guidry

Dulce Matthews Guidry, a native and resident of Norco, passed away on Oct. 7. She was 70 years old.

Mrs. Guidry was active in many church, civic and community organizations, including the United Way, Girl Scouts of America and Norco Women’s Club. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, James Burlin Guidry, her children Michael M. Guidry and his wife Dawn, Karen G. Deroche and husband Gary, Dianne G. Turner and husband Bill, Patricia G. Magee and husband Sam and Joan G. St. Pierre and husband Adrian, and her grandchildren, Ret Turner, Lonna Bagwell, Timothy Deroche, Andrew and Ryan Magee, Michael, Amanda and Mallory Guidry. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hiram A. Matthews and Mercedes Tregre Matthews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Oct. 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norco followed by interment at St. Charles Borromeo Mausoleum in Destrehan.

Hickman

Anthony “Tony” Albert Hickman, resident of Luling and native of Hattiesburg, Miss., passed away on Oct. 1. He was 53 years old.

He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Regina Brooks Hickman, father Doug Hickman and stepmother Willa Hickman, son Brooks Hickman, daughters Amanda Portera and Sarah Simoneaux, brother Ted Hickman, sister Rita Dykes, grandchildren Misty, Brandon, Salvadore and Emma Mae Portera and great-granddaughter Lexye Marie Whittington. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Lott Hickman.

Services were held at Golden Meadow Methodist Church on Oct. 7.

Landry

Thelma Simoneaux Landry, resident of Des Allemands, passed away on Oct. 5 at 10:19 pm. She was 83 years old.

Landry is survived by her sons, Gordon Quentin Landry Jr. and Sidney Joseph Landry; her daughters, Kathleen Landry Prentice, Carol Landry Lockhart and Mary Monica Landry Rubin; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Quentin Landry, Sr., parents Sidney Simoneaux Sr. and Lydia Bergeron Simoneaux; brothers Sidney J. Simoneaux Jr. and Leo C. Simoneaux and sisters Irma S. Vial and Doris S. DeJean.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Oct. 8 at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Des Allemands.

McWilliams

Helen McWilliams passed away on Oct. 10 at the age of 73. She is survived by her husband, Joe McWilliams, daughter Jenean Douglas, sons Rennis and Carlos Douglas, stepchildren Joe McWilliams II, Scott McWilliams and Nicole Ladner, sister Loretta Gaspard, brother Jack Hinton, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was be held on Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. at First Assembly of God Church, Highway 90, Des Allemands, with Pastor Charles G. Clary.

Simon

Pelham Benoit Simon, a native of Vacherie and resident of Grammercy, passed away on Oct. 24 at 12:10 a.m. He was 74 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Davidson Simon, his brothers Allen, Floyd and Neil Simon, stepchildren Lillie Jantz, Nora Adams, Sallie Beckes, Jonothan and Alvin “Tommy” Noris, seven step grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Prudent and Olphida Simon, brothers Prudent Jr., Daniel, Vincent and Lawrence Simon, sisters Vivian Simon, Eunice Abadie, Rose Villnerve and Pearl Attenhoffer.

Services were hled on Oct. 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Union. The family wishes to thank Dr. Halina and Dr. Gboloo, nurses and personnel of Ascension Hosptial, St. James Homecare, JoAnn Talley, Jessica Mayeux, Vickey hunter and Bobbie Hicks.

Bumgarner

Billie W. Bumgarner, a retired schoolteacher in St. Charles Parish, died on Nov. 28 at East Jefferson General Hospital.

Mrs. Bumgarner was a respected teacher in St. Charles Parish and was involved in the formation of the Gifted and Talented Program. After retirement, she continued to work in the ADAPT and GED programs. She was also an active member of the River Parishes Historical Society, on the Board of Destrehan Plantation, and on the St. Charles Parish Library Board.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Oscar Bumgarner, and her parents, William and Flora Wegener. She is survived by three children, Sue Powell, Darwynn Bumgarner, and Kay Pastor. She is also survived by sons-in-law, Jim Powell and Rodney Pastor, six grandchildren, Damon, Jenifer, James, Lori, Steven, and Erin, and her great friend, Lucie Vegas.

Services were held Dec. 2, 2002 at First Baptist Church in Luling with burial in Garden of Memories.
