Joseph F. Carriere, 83

FITCHBURG- Joseph F. Carriere, 83, of 85 Clearview Ave., a retired machinist and a veteran of World War II, died Monday, April 1, in Birchwood Care Center.

He leaves his wife of 48 years, Benoite M. (Bastarache) Carriere; four sons, Robert J. Carriere of Fitchburg, Michael J. Carriere of Fairlawn, N.J., David R. Carriere of Holden and Richard A. Carriere of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Roger Carrier of Waltham; and 12 grandchildren. His first wife, Janet (Simoneau) Carriere, died in 1953. A brother, Maurice Carriere of Fitchburg, died in 1942. A sister, Jeanne Mercandante of Worcester, died last year. He was born in Thetford Mines, Quebec, son of Joseph and Eva (Nadeau) Carrier, and lived most of his life in Fitchburg. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Asia and the Pacific.

For 28 years, Mr. Carriere was a machinist at American Can Co., retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Joseph Church.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, in St. Joseph Church, 49 Woodland St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Louis M. Isabelle Funeral Home, 316 Clarendon St.

Anthony Cataldo, 87
Tuesday, March 26, 2002

AUBURN- Anthony Cataldo, 87, of 14 Church St., a retired construction company co-owner, died Friday, March 22, in the Providence House, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves two sisters, Josephine Cataldo, with whom he lived, and Rose Rosienski of Southbridge; nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and a great-grandnephew. A brother, Rockwood Cataldo, and two sisters, Jennie Scavone and Mary Cataldo, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Donato and Mary (Scavone) Cataldo, and lived many years in Auburn. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines.

Mr. Cataldo, with his brother, founded and owned Cataldo Brothers Construction Co. He retired in 1974. He was a member of St. John's Church. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

The funeral will be held Monday, March 25, from the Garden Chapel of Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home, 179 Shrewsbury St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 24, in the funeral home.

Florence R. Chansky

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla.- Florence R. (Menovich) Chansky, 77, of Boynton Beach, formerly of Beverly, Mass., died Saturday, March 30, after a long illness.

Her husband was the late Hyman Chansky. She leaves a son, Bruce Chansky of Worcester, Mass.; two daughters; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers; nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407. Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, West Palm Beach, Fla., is directing arrangements.

Mary Chapin, 79

SPENCER- Mary "Betty" Chapin, 79, of 21 Wilson St., died Thursday, March 21, at home. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Pillsbury Funeral Home, 163 Main St., are incomplete.

Winfield W. Cheney, 59

NORTHBRIDGE- Winfield W. Cheney, 59, of Whitinsville, died Wednesday, March 27, in Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital in Milford.

He leaves his wife, Ramona (Lewis) Cheney; two daughters, Wendy Cheney of Plainville and Tina Spearin of Milford; a son, P.J. Cheney of Blackstone; three stepdaughters, Cindy Olstead of Millis, Debra Walls of Warwick, R.I., and Pamela Partington of Grafton; four stepsons, David Leeman of Bellingham, Randy Leeman of Sutton, Robert Leeman of Dudley and Brian Leeman of Milford; his mother, Josephine (Richards) Cheney of Bangor, Maine; 14 grandchildren. He was born in Hamden, Maine, son of the late Winfield Cheney, and lived in Milford and Grafton before moving to Whitinsville 12 years ago. He graduated from Hamden Academy, and attended the University of Maine in Orono.

Mr. Cheney worked in retail sales management, and before retiring worked as a dispatcher for Ross Express.

He enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, in Ginley Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Franklin. Burial will be in Union Street cemetery in Franklin. A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

D. Harvey Clarke Jr., 92, played basketball at Duke

SOUTHBRIDGE- D. Harvey Clarke Jr., 92, of 301 Main St., a World War II veteran and former Duke University basketball player, died Sunday, March 31, in Life Care Center in Auburn.

His wife, Mary E. (Canty) Clarke, died in January. He leaves two sons, Stephen D. Clarke of Sturbridge and Christopher H. Clarke of Southbridge; two daughters, Jane F. Clarke-Logee of Acton and Martha A. Clarke of Worcester; a sister, Helen Murray of Tucson, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Laurence L. and Philip A. Clarke, predeceased him. He was born in Southbridge, son of Dudley H. and Bertha (Hyde) Clarke. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He attended Duke University, and was on the basketball team.

Mr. Clarke was a real estate agent for various agencies for many years before retiring. He coached basketball at the former Mary E. Wells High School, as well as several semipro teams in the area. He was a member of Elm Street Congregational Church. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and at the age of 88, scored a hole in one.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Elm Street Congregational Church, Elm and Park streets. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dr. Van's Cardiac Gang, c/o Judy Flannery, RN, 100 South St., Southbridge, MA 01550.

Mary A. Coakley

WORCESTER -- Mary A. (O'Donnell) Coakley of 111 Longfellow Road, died Tuesday, March 19, in Christopher House.

Her husband of 40 years, John P. Coakley, died in 1979. She leaves two daughters, Catherine M. Coakley of Worcester and Margaret A. Coakley-Hamelin of Sterling; a sister, Eleanor M. O'Donnell of Worcester; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two sisters, Gertrude C. O'Donnell and Grace E. O'Donnell-Gamache, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of George H. and Katharine E. (Gaffney) O'Donnell. She graduated from Radcliffe College, Cambridge, and did graduate work at Clark University.

Mrs. Coakley was a high school teacher in Connecticut for several years. She was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Church and a member of several of its organizations, the Radcliffe Club, American Association of University Women and the Guild of Our Lady of Providence.

The funeral will be held Saturday, March 23, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home (www.oconnorbrothers.com), 592 Park Ave., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 22, in the funeral home. Rose F. Collins, 61
Monday, April 01, 2002

MARLBORO- Rose F. (Carney) Collins, 61, of Marlboro, died Saturday, March 30, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a 7-year struggle with recurring illness after suffering a stroke in 1995.

She leaves her husband of 33 years, John J. Collins; two daughters, Joan M. Collins and Carol A. Chione, both of Northboro; three sisters, Mary Carney and Patricia Clark, both of Marlboro, and Alice Colleyer of Webster; nephews and nieces. She was born in Marlboro, daughter of William and Ilene (Tremblay) Carney, and lived here most of her life.

Mrs. Collins worked for Shaw's Supermarket in Hudson. Previously, she worked for Fabtronics in Northboro. She was also a homemaker, cook and accomplished knitter and crocheter. She was a member of St. Ann's Parish.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, from William R. Short and Son Funeral Home, 95 West Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Church, 466 Lincoln St. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the funeral home.

Mary M. Connors, 80
Tuesday, March 26, 2002

FITCHBURG- Mary M. (McCormick) Connors, 80, of 222 South St., formerly of 47 Posco Ave., Leominster, a retired bookkeeper, died Sunday, March 24, in River Terrace Healthcare, Lancaster, after a long illness.

Her husband of 50 years, James B. Connors Sr., died in 1998. She leaves a son, James B. Connors Jr. of Gardner; a daughter, Rosemary Laverdiere of Leominster; and five grandchildren. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Thomas L. and Margaret (McNamara) McCormick, and lived in the Fitchburg and Leominster area. She graduated from St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School in 1939.

Mrs. Connors was the bookkeeper at T.L. McCormick Transfer Co. for 15 years before retiring. She was a member of St. Leo's Parish, Daughters of Isabella Fitchburg Chapter 44, and the Leominster Homemakers.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, March 27, from Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at noon in St. Leo's Church, 128 Main St., Leominster. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or donations made to Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Retirement Fund, 99 Church St., Leominster, MA 01453.

Arthur S. Corey, 86

HAMPTON, N.H.- Arthur S. Corey, 86, of 203 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Sunday, March 31, at home.

He leaves three brothers, Stephen B. Corey of Millbury, Raymond Boucher of Worcester, and Clarence J. Corey of North Hampton; several nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Milan B. and Clara (Cranston) Corey, and lived many years in Worcester and many years in North Hampton. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Corey was a quality control specialist more than 25 years at General Electric Co. in Ashland, Mass.

He was a member of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, and was a member of Piscataqua Chapter 4, Disabled American Veterans of Newington.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5, in St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach. After cremation, burial will be in New Hampshire Veterans cemetery in Boscawen. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road. Please omit flowers. Annette Cote, 88

SOUTHBRIDGE- Annette (Matte) Cote, 88, of 367 Morris St., died Tuesday, March 19, in Providence House Nursing Home after an illness.

Her husband, Leon Cote, died in 1984. She leaves several nephews and nieces. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Eugene and Marie Louise (Giroux) Matte.

Mrs. Cote worked at American Optical Co. before retiring.

The funeral will be held Saturday, March 23, from Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Center of Hope Emergency Relief Fund, PO Box 66, Southbridge, MA 01550.

Dorothy E. Courtney

FITCHBURG- Dorothy E. (Foley) Courtney, 79, of 446 Main St., Leominster, formerly of 561 Milk St., died Saturday, March 23, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after a short illness.

Her husband of 33 years, Michael B. Courtney, died in 1983. She leaves two sons, Austin J. Courtney of Fitchburg and Paul F. Courtney of Lunenburg; four grandchildren. A son, Michael E. Courtney of Fitchburg, died in 1962 and a sister, Bertha E. L'Esperance of Fitchburg, died in 1992. She was born in East Hampton, daughter of Austin E. and Myra (Mooney) Foley, and lived most of her life in Fitchburg. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1939, where she was a Gold F student.

Mrs. Courtney was a legal secretary for Attorney Howard Porter for several years, and later worked in the Fitchburg City Clerk's Office. She was also a clerk for the city school department.

She volunteered at the former Burbank Hospital.

the funeral will be held Wednesday, March 27, from Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 240 Water St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home.
