Helen B. Mackenzie, 83

MARLBORO - Helen B. (Masulaitis) Mackenzie, 83, of Marlboro, died Friday, April 5, in Marlboro Hospital after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 59 years, Lyman Mackenzie; a daughter, Barbara Hart of Marlboro; a brother, Frank Masulaitis of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Josephine Masulaitis of South Barre and Isabel LaPlante of Feeding Hills; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was born in Barre, daughter of Frank and Tophelia (Mastikite) Masulaitis, and lived in North Brookfield before moving to Marlboro from Kisimee, Fla. three years ago.

Mrs. Mackenzie enjoyed golfing, and was a member of Bay Path Golf Course. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church in North Brookfield for many years.

The funeral and burial will be held at a later date. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, in William R. Short and Son Funeral Home, 95 West Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Nicholas N. Marino, 88

WORCESTER - Nicholas N. Marino, 88, of 61 Brookhaven Road, formerly of 783 Grafton St., a retired business co-owner and operator, died Tuesday, April 2, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a brief illness.

His wife of 51 years, Anna (Cabot) Marino, died in 1988. He leaves a son, John D. Marino of West Yarmouth; a daughter, Jeanne E. Marino-Belinskas, with whom he lived; a brother, Michael Marino of Worcester; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Dominick and Joseph Marino, and two sisters, Mary Marino and Carmella Maggard, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Marrinacci) Marino.

Mr. Marino, with his wife, owned and operated Marino's Market on Grafton Street for 38 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Greendale Retired Men's Club and its senior bowling league.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 5, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St. (www.mercadantefuneral.com), with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, in the funeral home.

George A. Marshall 3rd

FITCHBURG - George A. "Jay" Marshall 3rd, 57, of 440 Marshall Road, chief executive officer and president of Marshall Farms, died Thursday, April 4, in Boston Medical Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Elizabeth (Reed) Marshall; a son, Robert P. Marshall of Fitchburg; his parents, George A. Marshall Jr. and Marion J. (Renne) Marshall of Fitchburg; two sisters, Jacquelyn Pascucci of Wellesley and Pamela Marshall of Sterling; a grandson; nephews and nieces. He was born in Fitchburg. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1963 and attended University of Massachusetts at Amherst's Stockbridge School of Agriculture.

Mr. Marshall was president and chief executive officer of the family apple farm until he became ill. He enjoyed flying airplanes and was a member of the Fitchburg Airport Commission. He was also a member of the New York & New England Apple Institute.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children's Hospital, Cardiology Department, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115.

Irene F. Maurice, 85

UXBRIDGE - Irene F. (Longe) Maurice, 85, formerly of 144 North Main St., a resident of Northbridge Nursing Home, died Wednesday, April 3, in Milford Whitinsville Regional Hospital, Milford, after an illness.

Her husband, Joseph E. Maurice, died in 1974. She leaves a son, Robert E. Maurice of Corning, N.Y.; two daughters, Theresa Wright of Webster and Jeanne Maurice of Uxbridge; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was born in Fairfield, Vt., daughter of Lewis and Florence (Whitehead) Longe, and was educated in Fairfield schools. She lived most of her life in Uxbridge.

Mrs. Maurice worked at the former Bernat's Mill and the Youngblood Co. in Millbury. She enjoyed crafts, crosswords and gardening.

The funeral will be held Saturday, April 6, from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Road, with a Mass at 8:30 a.m. in Good Shepherd Church, 121 Linwood St., Linwood. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Northbridge. There are no calling hours.

Richard A. McGreevy

LOS ANGELES - Richard "Al" A. McGreevy, 56, of Los Angeles, formerly of Holyoke, Mass., a Vietnam War veteran, died Saturday, March 30, in California.

He leaves three sons, including Jake and Ryan McGreevy, both of Holden, Mass.; a daughter, Brooke Baron of Ashby, Mass.; two brothers; two sisters; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, April 11, in James P. Hobert & Sons Funeral Home, 250 Suffolk St., Holyoke, with Mass at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Holyoke. Burial will be in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, and 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday, April 11, in the funeral home.

Julia A. Moran, 92

Sister Mary Veronica Mullarkey, 97

WORCESTER - Sister Mary Veronica Mullarkey, 97, of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, died Wednesday, April 3, in Our Lady of Mercy Healthcare Center.

She leaves a sister, Kathleen Lohan of Springfield; many nieces and nephews, including Nancy Brown and Rita Lonergan, both of Springfield; many grandnieces and grandnephews; great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was born in County Sligo, Ireland, daughter of Patrick and Catherine Mullarkey, and attended school in Ireland. She lived many years in Worcester.

She entered the sisters of Mercy in 1932, and professed her perpetual vows in 1937.

Her ministries with the Sisters of Mercy included many years as director of the St. Joseph Residence for Women. She was also on the staff of the Nazareth Home for Boys in Leicester. She taught religious education at several parishes, including Christ the King and Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the Convent of Mercy Chapel, 101 Barry Road. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Leicester. Calling hours are from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Retirement Fund, 101 Barry Road, Worcester, MA 01609. Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., is directing arrangements.

Philip A. O'Brien, 85, World War II veteran

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Philip A. O'Brien, 85, of Port St. Lucie, formerly of Worcester, Mass., and East Falmouth, Mass., a World War II veteran and a retired salesman, died March 14 in Martin Memorial Hospital, Stuart, after a long battle with leukemia.

He leaves his wife of 22 years, Frances R. Squires O'Brien; a son, Daniel O'Brien of Fort Mills, S.C.; four daughters, Mary Beth Sandman of Wellesley, Mass., Teresa Martinez of San Diego, Susanne Bercovici of Falmouth, Mass., and Elaine Gibney of Olympia, Wash.; a stepson, Norman A. Squires of New Hampshire; two stepdaughters, Ann Marie Zappala of Boca Raton and Susan E. Carlson of Bellingham, Mass.; two brothers, William O'Brien of Worcester and Donald O'Brien of Pittsfield, Mass.; 15 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. His first wife, Mary M. (Callahan) O'Brien, died in 1975. A son, Phillip A. O'Brien was killed in the Vietnam War. A sister, Elizabeth Hardy, died in 1988. He was born in Worcester, son of John A. and Gertrude M. (Sullivan) O'Brien, and lived there many years, summering in East Falmouth before moving there in the 1970s. He moved to Port St. Lucie six years ago. He graduated from South High School, Worcester, in 1934 and attended WPI, Worcester. He graduated from Clark University, Worcester, in 1938, when he received a Yale fellowship to University of Jena in Weimar, Germany. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with military intelligence overseas.

Mr. O'Brien was a salesman for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for 15 years, retiring in 1981. Previously, he was co-president of E.A. Sullivan Co., Worcester. He was chairman of the board of the Worcester Mercantile Bureau; a director of Camp Fire Girls; and a member of the Worcester Art Museum and Worcester Executive Club. He held several memberships in Falmouth and Florida. He was fluent in several languages, and he enjoyed golf, tennis and traveling.

There memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Leukemia Society, 495 Old Connecticut Path, Framingham, MA 01701. Callahan Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester (www.callahanbrothers.com) is directing arrangements.
