Peter L. Goguen, 40

GARDNER - Peter L. Goguen, 40, of 91 Regan St., died Monday, April 8, at home.

He leaves his mother, Ellen M. (Morrison) Goguen of Leominster; a sister, Darlene A. Touchette of Fitchburg; a niece and a nephew. He was born in Moncton, Canada, son of the late Leo J. Goguen. He was raised in Fitchburg, and had lived in Gardner for the last 10 years. He graduated in 1978 from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg.

Mr. Goguen drove tractor trailers for several years. He was a car enthusiast, and enjoyed playing the guitar.

A memorial Mass will be held at noon Saturday, April 13, in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic St., Leominster. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Leominster. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Mass. Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster, is directing arrangements.

Arline F. Raymond, 94, leaves 80 descendants

ATHOL - Arline F. (Bancroft) Raymond, 94, of 103 Freedom St., a retired printing company co-owner and operator, died Sunday, April 21, in Quabbin Valley Healthcare.

Her husband of 69 years, Merrill S. Raymond, died in 1996. She leaves two sons, David B. Raymond of Athol and Roger J. Raymond of Saco, Maine; two daughters, Joan Carr of Westboro and Claire Ewell of Athol; 23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Kroyman, died in 1985. She was born in Athol, daughter of Varney L. and Florence B. (Dyer) Bancroft, and attended Athol schools.

With her husband, Mrs. Raymond owned and operated Athol Printing Co. for 50 years, distributing the local paper "The Athol Advertiser." They retired in 1980. She was a member of Athol-Orange Baptist Church; a member and past district deputy of Athol-Orange Emblem Club; and a member and past president of the Quota Club. She spent summers at her camp on Packard Heights and wintered several years in St. Petersburg, Fla. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, playing cards and bingo.

The funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, April 25, in Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, and 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 25, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial contributions may be made to the Athol High School Scholarship Association, Barbara Kroyman Fund, c/o Beverly Tarolli, PO Box 338, Athol, MA 01331.

C. Vincent Shea, 85

WORCESTER - C. Vincent Shea, 85, of 123 Granite St., a former state representative, died Sunday, May 12, at home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, M. Ruth (Carney) Shea; three sons, Dennis Shea of Worcester, Michael V. Shea of Marlboro and Kevin Shea of Georgetown; six daughters, Maureen DesRosiers, Justine Shea, Geraldine Shine, Aileen Zelesky and Christine Kachadorian, all of Worcester, and Colleen Gingris of Spencer; a brother, Everett "Fat" Shea of Shrewsbury; 28 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Michael C. and Margaret T. (Ring) Shea. He graduated from St. John's Preparatory School and College of the Holy Cross. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe.

Mr. Shea was a Massachusetts state representative from Worcester from 1965 to 1978. He was assistant majority leader. Previously, he and his brother owned and operated Shea's Tavern in Kelley Square. He was executive assistant and personnel director at Worcester County Hospital before being appointed administrator in 1982. He retired in 1988. He was a member of Church of the Ascension; served on the board of directors at the Blair House and St. Ann's Orphanage; and was a member of several organizations, including Vernon Hill American Legion Post, Alhambra Council Knights of Columbus 88,, Knights of Columbus Bishop O'Reilly Assembly and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, May 15, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St. (www.faybrothers.com), with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to UMass Memorial Hospice, 650 Lincoln St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Margaret M. Bates, 82
Saturday, May 11, 2002

BROOKLYN, Conn. - Margaret M. (Mochrie) Bates, 82, of Vina Lane, Creamery Brook, formerly of Woodstock, died Thursday, May 9, in Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, after a brief illness.

Her husband, John L. Bates, died in 1989. She leaves a son, Robert A. Bates of Bolinas, Calif.; a daughter, Ethel C. Stafford of Thompson; two grandsons, Andrew J. Stafford of Thompson and Christian A. Bates of Bolinas; and a niece. A sister, Helen Kubach, predeceased her. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of Alexander and Jessie (Nash) Mochrie, and lived in Garden City, N.Y., before moving to Woodstock in 1974 and to Brooklyn two years ago.

Mrs. Bates was a member of Evangelical Covenant Church, Woodstock, where she was a deacon and a member of the Phoebe Circle and the Ladies Group. She was active in the local Bible Study Group.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, in Evangelical Covenant Church, Childs Hill Road, Woodstock. Burial will be in Elmvale Cemetery, Woodstock. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam. Memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical Covenant Church, Childs Hill Road, Woodstock, CT 06281; or to The Gideons, 86 Crystal Pond Road, Eastford, CT 06242.

Rodney A. Zablan, 60

MARLBORO - Rodney A. Zablan, 60, of Marlboro, died Wednesday, May 8, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Boston.

He leaves his wife of 11 years, Brenda R. (Berger) Hanson-Zablan; three sons, Frank W. Zablan of Upton, Thomas W. Zablan of Hawaii and Jason A. Morris of Woodstock, N.H.; two daughters, Wendy Lee Tortolini of Boca Raton, Fla., and April R. Hanson of Marlboro; two brothers, Frank K. Kekahuna and James T. Zablan of Hawaii; two sisters, Gwendolyn K. Filiault of Adams and Frances N. Boyd of Fort Collins. Colo.; and four grandchildren. He was born in Honolulu, son of James K. and Dorothy Y. (Young) Zablan, and lived more than 25 years in Marlboro. He graduated from Kamehamelia High School, Honolulu, and attended University of Hawaii and Bentley College, Boston. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

Mr. Zablan was a section manager of test equipment maintenance for more than 15 years at Prime Computer Co., Framingham. He was the state senior vice commander of the Massachusetts Disabled American Veterans and was to assume the position of Massachusetts state commander of the Disabled American Veterans next month. He was commander of Marlboro Disabled American Veterans Chapter 82; a member of the Boston Hawaiian Club and the Hawaiian music group Hoo Kanipila. He was also a volunteer computer training teacher for senior citizens. He enjoyed gardening and photography.

After cremation in Rural Crematory, Worcester, the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, in First Church Congregational of Marlboro, Bolton and High streets. Burial, with military honors, will be in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DAV Golf Classic, JFK Federal Building, Room 1575B, Boston, MA 02203. John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Stella M. Allard, 83
Monday, June 03, 2002

WARE - Stella M. (Lorraine) Allard, 83, of Gilbertville Road, died Saturday, June 1, in Mary Lane Hospital.

She leaves her husband of 65 years, Lawrence E. Allard; five sons, Larry Allard of West Brookfield, Ronald and Randall Allard, both of Ware, David Allard of Gilbertville and Michael Allard of Maynard; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. A son, Francis Allard, predeceased her. She was born in Winooski, Vt., daughter of Ferdinand and Rose (Fay) Lorraine, and had lived in Ware since 1955.

Mrs. Allard enjoyed music and crocheting.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 4, from Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in All Saints Church, 17 North St. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 3, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Quaboag on the Common, East Main Street, West Brookfield, MA 01585.

Shirley D. Arsenault, 76

TOWNSEND - Shirley D. (Hotaling) Arsenault, 76, of 48 Clement Road, died Friday, May 31, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

She leaves her husband of 58 years, Blair Arsenault Jr.; a son, Daniel C. Arsenault of Townsend; a daughter, Bonnie J. Vitelli of Townsend; two brothers, Harold T. Hotaling Jr. of Largo, Fla., and Dennis Peterson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Patricia L. Mallard of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren; and a nephew. A sister, Alice Lainge of Northampton, died in 2001. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Harold T. and Esther (Nelson) Hotaling, and graduated from Townsend High School in 1944.

Mrs. Arsenault was a certified by the American Red Cross in swimming instruction and gave lessons in Townsend, Ashby, Pepperell, and Brookline, N.H. She owned and operated for 15 years a business specializing in sewing, needlepoint, and interior design. During the 1950s and 1960s, she opened her home to three foster children and operated a nursery school from her home. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was active with the local Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs and enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques and cooking. She attended St. John the Evangelist Church and Our Lady of the Lake Church, Leominster.

The memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 6, in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St., Leominster. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, in T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St.

Jesse W. Balcom, 91
Sunday, June 02, 2002

AUBURN - Jesse W. Balcom, 91, a resident of the Life Care Center of Auburn, a retired postal clerk and World War II veteran, died Friday, May 31, at home.

He leaves his wife, Ethel (Carlson) Balcom; and a daughter, Janice E. Kalmowitz of Worcester. A son, Bruce Balcom, died in 1996. He was born in Oxford, son of Edwin E. and Annie M. (Cather) Balcom, and lived in Worcester most of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Balcom was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years, retiring 30 years ago. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Worcester. He enjoyed traveling and playing cribbage.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Life Care Center of Auburn, Activity Department, 14 Masonic Circle, Auburn, MA 01501. Elizabeth Allen, 80

STERLING - Elizabeth (Muzzy) Allen, 80, of 155 Tuttle Road, died Friday, May 31, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus, Worcester, after an illness. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, are incomplete.

Margaret Bird, 93, taught school for many years

NORTHBORO - Margaret (Pence) Bird, 93, of 112 West Main St., a former teacher, died Thursday, May 23, in Coleman House Nursing Center.

Her husband, William W. Bird, died in 1992. She leaves a son, William W. Bird of Sterling; a daughter, Beverly Miller of Atlanta; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was born in Harrisonburg, Va., daughter of Walter and Daisy (Frazier) Pence, and graduated from Madison College, Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Bird was a teacher for many years.

Mary D. Boni, 95

MILFORD - Mary D. (Tosches) Boni, 95, of 17 Lee St., died Sunday, June 2, in the Geriatric Authority.

Her husband, Guido Boni, died in 1990. She leaves a son, George Boni of Bellingham; a daughter, Eleanor Boni of Milford; a brother, Stephen Tosches of Milford; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Matthew, Fred and Augustino Tosches, and two sisters, Clara DiVittorio and Lauretta Leo, predeceased her. She was born in Milford, daughter of Federico and Giuliette (Vendetti) Tosches, and attended Milford schools.

Mrs. Boni was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and its Women's Guild.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, from Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home, 46 Water St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 7 East Main St. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to The Helping Hands at the Geriatric Authority, 1 Countryside Lane, Milford, MA 01757.

HUDSON - Ernest J. Boyd, 91, formerly of Hudson, died Thursday, May 30, in Bolton Manor Nursing Home in Marlboro.

His wife, Jennie A. (Stephens) Boyd, died in 1979. He leaves several nieces and nephews. He was born in Hudson, son of James A. and Ethel M. (Kempton) Boyd, and attended Hudson public schools.

Mr. Boyd worked at Diamond Shoe Co. and later at Hill Brothers Shoe Co. for 30 years. He worked at Koro Co. before retiring in 1976. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and Hudson Senior Citizens.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 3, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Wood Square. Burial will be in Forestvale Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, in Merrill-Carleton Funeral Home, 1 Pleasant St.
