Jerauldine Bearse Marquit, 75

Hyannis ­ Jerauldine (Bearse) Marquit, 75, a former bookkeeper, sales representative and home health care provider, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.

She was the wife of George E. Marquit Sr. for 57 years.

Born in Hyannis, Mrs. Marquit was raised in South Chatham and graduated from Chatham High School. She married in 1942 and lived in Chatham before moving to Hyannis in 1955.

Mrs. Marquit worked as a bookkeeper for Singer Sewing Machine Co. in Hyannis, Whitings Milk Co. and Mid-Cape Sheet Metal Co. in Hyannis. She was also a sales representative for Stanley Home Products.

For a brief period of time, she was a home health care provider for elderly people in the Hyannis area.

A member of the Plaides Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Chatham, she sang with the Cape Chordaires in Yarmouth and attended services at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable.

She enjoyed reading, swimming and decorative painting.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Jane M. Dion of East Harwich; a son, George E. "Mark" Marquit Jr. of Hyannis; a brother, Ralph Bearse of Bessimer, Ala.; a grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis; MA 02660.

Lorraine Smith, 73

Centerville ­ Lorraine (Sullivan) Smith, 73, a homemaker and Red Cross volunteer, died at her home Monday, August 30, 1999 after a long illness with cancer.

She was surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of John A. "Jack" Smith, a retired Navy captain and retired Stone and Webster executive. Mr. and Mrs. Smith met when they were 20 years old and were married for 52 years.

Born in Taunton, Mrs. Smith grew up in Taunton and North Easton. She graduated from Oliver Ames High School in North Easton in 1948.

Throughout her husband's Navy and civilian careers, Mrs. Smith was a partner and supporter through good times and tough times. She was a wonderful homemaker and devoted to her family.

Mrs. Smith served as a volunteer Red Cross Gray Lady in various Naval and civilian hospitals. She specialized in emergency room support.

As her children grew older, Mrs. Smith was able to meet her husband overseas and travel extensively through Europe when his ship was deployed in European waters.

The Smiths moved to Centerville in 1986. Mrs. Smith and her family were longtime summer residents of Monument Beach, having purchased a home there when Mr. Smith was assigned to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

She was known for her knitting of mittens and hats for young children. In the last few years, during her illness with cancer, she knitted more than 2,000 pairs of mittens, which she donated to her church and other organizations for children.

Mrs. Smith also enjoyed gardening and boating with her family in the waters off Oyster Harbors. She was a den mother for many Cub Scout dens and a troop leader for various Brownie and Girl Scout troops.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.

Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Kerry J. Smith of Tracy's Landing, Md., Kim A. Smith of Falls Church, Va., and Kevin E. Smith of Centerville; a daughter, Kristin M. Smith of Centerville; five sisters, Jeanne S. Kent of Newport News,Va., Nancy E. Huff of Harrisonburg, Va., Colleen Y. Sullivan of East Bridgewater, Roberta A. Whitmore of Charlotte, Vt., and Margo Edwards of Bristol, Tenn.; a brother, Gary R. Sullivan of Pittsboro, N.C.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central and Outer Cape Cod Inc., 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660; Hospice Association of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center, Cape Cod Hospital, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Russell M. Freeman, 81

Hyannis - Russell M. Freeman, 81, a Cape resident since 1972, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 6, 1999 at his home. He was the husband of Carolyn C. (Cochran) Freeman.

Born, raised and educated in Springfield, Mr. Freeman was a graduate of Classical High School of Springfield. He served in the Army for 13 years.

After his military career, he worked for The Springfield Armory as a toolmaker and later as a quality control and time study representative. He also worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works as a survey assistant and highway inspector.

Mr. Freeman retired to Marstons Mills in 1972 and later moved to Hyannis. He was a charter member of the Council of Doers of Cape Cod, where he was active in the conception and organization of the club.

His hobbies included fishing and woodworking.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Keith E. Freeman of Springfield; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Sylvia J. Gallagher, 54

South Yarmouth - Sylvia J. Gallagher, 54, a landscape designer and jazz singer, died of breast cancer Thursday, September 9, 1999 at the Hospice House of Barnstable.

Born and raised in Tiverton, R.I., she attended Radcliffe University and Cape Cod Community College, studying horticulture and landscape design.

A resident of South Yarmouth for more than 20 years, she worked days as a landscape designer for Evergreen Landscape and later for Hoxie Landscape Services. She also worked evenings as a jazz singer in many restaurants and establishments on the Cape.

Her greatest career accomplishment was performing the country's National Anthem on opening day at Fenway Park.

Known for her sensitive and fun-loving personality, she loved her family, singing, gardening, painting and dining out with friends.

She is survived by her mother, Jean Edwards of Hickory, N.C.; a son, Christopher Gallagher of Centerville; a daughter, Jaime Bulman of Centerville; a sister, Joyce Thomas of Taylorsville, N.C.; a grandson; and a niece.

A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Her ashes will be scattered at sea on a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Association of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Alfonsa 'Frances' Graceffa, 91

Hyannis - Alfonsa "Frances" Graceffa, 91, a former seamstress and beauty salon owner, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999 at the Cape Cod Extended Care Pavilion after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Salvatore Graceffa.

Born in Pennsylvania , Mrs. Graceffa was educated in Brooklyn, N.Y. She and her husband owned and operated Sal's Beauty Salon in Needham for more than 30 years.

She moved to Osterville in 1964 from Needham and worked as a seamstress at Mark Fore and Strike in Osterville for 20 years.

Mrs. Graceffa was a member of the Son's of Italy Lodge in Mashpee and a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville as well as the Ladies Guild.

She also loved sewing and knitting.

Surviving are a daughter, Madeline Salvaggio of Osterville; two sisters, Helen Primavare and Susan Rizzo, both of Deltona, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.

Jennie Grenon, 87

Hyannis - Jennie (Bolduc) Grenon, 87, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 at her home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late George E. Grenon.

Mrs. Grenon was born in Acushnet and lived there for a time. A resident of Hyannis since 1960, she also lived in New Bedford and Rochester.

She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

Surviving are a son, Richard E. Grenon of Brewster; a sister, Rita Walega of Acushnet; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Mary's Church in New Bedford.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Elizabeth "Betsy" S. Hornor, 66

Osterville - Elizabeth Saunders Hornor, age 66, died September 10, 1999 after a fall in her Osterville home.

Known to everyone as "Betsy," she was active in a number of Cape Cod cultural and philanthropic organizations.

She is survived by her husband, Townsend; a daughter, Grace Evans of Cohasset; a son, Townsend Jr. (Sandy) of Ellicott City, Md.; a stepdaughter, Dr. Sally Hornor of Arnold, Md.; seven grandchildren and three dogs.

Animals were a central part of Betsy Hornor's life. She took in three dogs, one of which is blind another that was abused, and one that was about to become homeless. She was involved with the Companion Animal Program as a certified nursing home visitor with her dog Maggie.

Because of her love for animals, Mrs. Hornor became involved in the National Marine Life Center, Inc. in Bourne, MA, serving as its chair from its rounding in October 1995 to her death. The NMLC is renovating a building in Buzzards Bay to create a rehabilitation hospital for stranded marine animals with associated programs in education and research.

Betsy was actively involved in a number of other charitable organizations. At her death she was the president of the Osterville Village Association, chairman of the town of Barnstable Youth Commission, and a director of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, the Nickerson Society, the MSPCA, and Three Bays Preservation, Inc.

She was a driver for the visually impaired with Sight Loss Services. She was a former president of the Barnstable Town Council, a member of the Town Human Services Grants Committee and clerk of the Town Personnel Committee. She was a rounding member of the Cape Cod Academy. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Academy's Education Committee, the Osterville Rotary Club and several political clubs.

Mrs. Hornor was born in New York City, attended the Masters School and graduated from Smith College in 1954.

A memorial gathering for her was held Thursday, September 16 at the Hornor home.

John Alden Hynes, 77

Hyannis - John Alden Hynes, 77, professor emeritus of Cape Cod Community College and former Air Force fighter pilot in World War II, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999 in his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Lucy Joan (Skidmore) Hynes for 47 years.

Born in Pawtucket, R.I., he graduated from Brown University in 1943 and received his masters from Duke University in 1966.

Mr. Hynes served in the Air Force for 20 years. He was a fighter pilot, earning the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He retired with the rank of major in 1964 and settled on Cape Cod where he joined the faculty at Cape Cod Community College.

He retired from the college in 1984 to enjoy his hobby of golf. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Thomas J. Hynes of Brewster; a daughter, Judy Hynes of Boston; and a sister, Hope Arnold of Westerly, R.I.

A memorial service was held at the Federated Church of Hyannis.

Burial is at a later date.
