Douglas R. Salter, 80

Centerville - Douglas Robert Salter, 80, an artist, designer, business owner and salesman, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999 in Hyannis. He was the husband of Isabelle Rose Salter.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Salter was raised and educated in Toronto, Canada, and graduated from Danforth Technical Institute in Toronto with a degree in arts and design.

In 1940, he returned to the United States and joined the Army Air Corps. He served in England during World War II as a warrant officer in the Intelligence Unit, where he pieced together reconnaissance aerial photos and mapped and sketched information received from returning and captured military personnel.

Mr. Salter married in 1944 in England. He returned to the United States in 1946 and worked for Hickok Manufacturing in Rochester, N.Y., where he designed men's accessories and was the designer of the Hickok Belt award for the Professional Athlete of the Year.

He also owned Salter Product Design, designing everything from washing machines to buildings, and was instrumental in planning several courses at Pratt Institute in New York.

After moving to the Cape in 1976, he was the co-owner and manager of the Simple Fare Restaurant in Sandwich. He was a salesman for Intercity Alarms for the past 18 years.

Mr. Salter was an avid gardener. He had an eye for detail and enjoyed problem solving. He was also a member of the Press Radio Club in Rochester, N.Y.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Suzanne Fitzgerald of Rochester, N.Y.; a son, Raymond D. Salter of Boston; a sister, Jean Juengling of Billings, Mont.; four grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew.

Marguerite L. Sheehan, 83

Naples, Fla. - Marguerite Letellier Sheehan, 83, a former 14-year resident of Osterville, died on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at University Hospitals in Cleveland following a nearly three month illness caused by a stroke. She was the wife of the late David V. Sheehan for 42 years.

Mrs. Sheehan was born in Seneca Falls, N.Y. She was a 1933 graduate of Villa Maria Academy in Montreal, Canada. In 1937, she received a bachelor's degree from New Rochelle College in New York.

After marrying, she and her family lived in New York and in 1953 moved to Cleveland, where they resided until relocating to Boston in 1972. While in Cleveland, she sold residential real estate in addition to raising her children and participating in volunteer work. She was active in the Christ Child Society, the Carmelite Guild and the Girl Scouts. She also taught religion to mentally disabled children.

After the retirement of her husband, the Sheehans moved to Osterville in 1975. Following his death in 1980, she remained in Osterville until 1989, when she moved to Florida to be closer to her older sister. Mrs. Sheehan spent the summer months with her children in Cleveland.

She was active in both Roman Catholic and civic organizations throughout her life. While living in Osterville, she was involved with the Women's Guild of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, and served as its president in the mid 1980s. She was also active in the Garden Club of Osterville. She continued with her volunteer work after moving to Naples, Fla.

Mrs. Sheehan was an accomplished singer during her high school and college years and maintained a lifelong interest in classical music and Broadway musicals. She also enjoyed reading and playing bridge.

She is survived by two sons, David Sheehan of Mission Viejo, Calif. and Gerard Sheehan of University Heights, Ohio; four daughters, Judith Sheehan of Cleveland, Ohio, Julia Sheehan of Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth Sheehan of Ayer, Mass., and Katherine Sheehan of San Francisco; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Osterville. Members of her family were in attendance.

Mrs. Sheehan was buried in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit, next to her husband.

David W. Tarbox, 65

Marstons Mills - David W. Tarbox, 65, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He was the husband of Barbara (Padula) Tarbox.

Born in Hartford, Conn., Mr. Tarbox was raised in Newton. He lived in Quincy, Randolph and Weymouth before moving to Marstons Mills seven years ago.

Mr. Tarbox worked in quality control for Domino Sugar/Amstar Corp. in Charlestown for 25 years until his retirement in 1988. He also had his own tile-setting business for 30 years.

A Korean War Navy veteran, he was the founder and first president of the South Quincy Social Club. He had his private pilot's license and was an avid scuba diver.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, David W. Tarbox II of Whitman; a daughter, Jennifer M. Milano of Plymouth; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Chapel, Mashpee Commons. Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Herbert B. Walden Jr., 78

Cotuit - Herbert B. Walden Jr., 78, a retired photographer, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 at Falmouth Hospital. He was the husband of Grace (Murray) Walden.

Born in Worcester, Mr. Walden was a graduate of South High School in Worcester. He moved to Cotuit in 1985 from Worcester.

Mr. Walden was an industrial photographer for Heald Machine Co. in Worcester until his retirement in 1983. He was also the staff photographer for the Worcester Museum of Art.

A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he served in the China, Burma, India Theater.

He was a communicant of Christ the King Parish in Mashpee.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Linda Lubelczyk of Mashpee; a son, Richard W. Walden of Mashpee; two sisters, Shirley Mangan of El Reno, Okla., and Ruth Walden of Newark, N.J.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Chapel, Mashpee Commons, Mashpee.

Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery in East Falmouth.

Thomas G. Eastman, 53

Weston - Thomas G. Eastman, 53, a part-time Cotuit resident, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 at his home in Weston.

He was the husband of Terry Beckley Eastman.

He was born in Hollywood, Calif.

In 1968 he graduated from Stanford University and continued his education at Harvard Business School. In 1981 he founded Aldrich, Eastman and Waltch, a national investment firm, and was later chief executive officer. The company dealt with pension fund investments in commercial real estate and was sold in 1997 to Met Life. Since that time Mr. Eastman served as a consultant to A.E.W. Capital Management.

Prominent in real estate affairs Mr. Eastman served as founder and past president of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers, the director of Bedford Properties and CB Whittier Partners, and as a member of corporate and civic ventures.

An avid boater and golfer, he was a member of the Weston Golf Club and a partner of Innovative Golf Management of Palm Desert, Calif., and of Charter Research Boston. He was also active in civic affairs, leading the renovation of the Weston Middle School.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Timothy Beckley Eastman and David Forrester Eastman, both of Weston and Cotuit; a sister, Mary Hallowes of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Sussex, England.

Funeral services were held at First Parish Church, Weston Center

Alvin H. Hueber, 45

West Yarmouth - Alvin H. Hueber, 45, who worked recently for the Town of Barnstable Park and Recreation Department, died at home Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999.

He was the son of Aldo Mae (Johnson) Hueber of West Yarmouth.

Born in New Haven Conn., Mr. Hueber was raised and educated in Brookline and grew up on the site of this year's Ryder Cup, The Country Club.

He graduated from Brookline High School and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst's Stockbridge program.

Mr. Hueber worked in landscaping for many years. He was recently employed by the Town of Barnstable Park and Recreation Department.

He enjoyed woodworking and landscape design.

Besides his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Deborah J. Robinson of Somerville and Carey M. Michel of Grapevine, Texas ; his fiancée Betty Jodko of Hyannis; two nieces; and two nephews.

A memorial service was held at The First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable. Burial will follow at a later date.

Ronald W. Johnson, 52

Dayton, Ohio - Ronald W. Johnson, 52, a native of Hyannis, died unexpectedly Sept. 12, 1999 at his home of a heart attack.

He was the husband of Hwa Son Johnson for 29 years.

Born in Hyannis, Mr. Johnson was a 1965 graduate of Barnstable High School and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was an Army veteran and served two years in Korea.

A certified nurseryman, Mr. Johnson worked for the family business, Harry F. Johnson and Sons in Osterville until moving to Dayton, where he was currently employed by ChemLawn/True Green Corp.

Mr. Johnson was also an active member of the Bethel Temple Assemblies of God Church and a licensed minister in the state of Ohio.

He enjoyed reading his Bible daily, praying, spending time with his family and sports.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his parents, Harry F. and Lucille S. Johnson of Centerville; two daughters, Ann Meekins and Anna Riste, both of Dayton; a son, Eric Johnson of Dayton; two brothers, Arnold Johnson of Osterville and Timothy Johnson of Waquoit; a granddaughter; a grandson; and a niece and three nephews.

Funeral services and burial were held in Ohio with full military honors.

Walter R. Laite, 70

Hyannis - Walter R. Laite, 70, a retired manufacturing manager, died Wednesday, Sept. 22 at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was the husband of Constance (Phaneuf) Laite.

Born in Cambridge, Mr. Laite was raised and educated in Somerville and was a graduate of Boston University. He worked as a manufacturing manager at the Raytheon Co. until his retirement in 1990.

Mr. Laite was a co-founder and member of the Acton Minutemen. He was also a former Mason and a member of the Hyannis Lodge of Elks No. 1549.

He enjoyed boating and traveled extensively.

Surviving are a son, David R. Laite; a daughter, Susan E. Tansey; a sister, Olive G. Stobo; four stepsons, Robert J., John J., David P. and Paul Mertzlufft; two stepdaughters, Lori A. Mertzlufft and Julie A. Birch; two grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

A funeral service was held at the South Congregational Church in Centerville. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.
