Donald M. Lay, Jr., 84

Fredericksburg, Va - Donald M. Lay, Jr., 84, formerly Dean of Rhode Island School Design and Headmaster of the Palm Beach Day School, died in Fredericksburg, Va., on Sunday, September 26, 1999.

A native of Bellerose, Long Island, Mr. Lay was a graduate of the Episcopal High School of Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia, where he played basketball and tennis, and received a B.A. from Hofstra University before earning a Master of Arts degree in English at the University of Southern California. During World War II, he served in the Navy in New Jersey and California as an instructor of fledgling aviators, teaching navigation through use of free balloons and blimps.

After the war, Mr. Lay taught briefly at Yale University and the Hotchkiss School before joining the faculty of the Loomis School in Windsor, Conn., where he taught English, chaired the English department, and coached tennis. In 1962, he became Headmaster at Palm Beach Day School in Palm Beach, Fla.

In 1965, Mr. Lay became Dean of Students at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., and later he was appointed Dean of the College and also served for a year as Acting President.

In 1976, Mr. Lay returned to Florida, joining the English faculty of the Ransom-Everglades School in Coconut Grove where he was widely revered for his classes in mythology, comedy, and Shakespeare. As a teacher and administrator, Mr. Lay was known for his inspiring teaching, for carefully and patiently attending to his students, and for his generous wit and humor. He retired to Palm City, Fla., in 1986.

An avid sportsman, Mr. Lay was a lifelong tennis player and was nationally ranked in that sport while in college. He summered for many years in Barnstable, where he was a mainstay of the tennis program at the Barnstable Yacht Club and held a local reputation as a striped bass fisherman.

His death was caused by complications resulting from an automobile accident on Sept. 10.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Lay, of Palm City, Fla.; his children and step children: Robert Lay of Lakeland, Fla.; Marcy Lay Gustafson of Silver Spring, Md.; Richard Brittain Lay and John Lay of Barnstable; Geoffrey Warner of Deer Isle, Me.; Jonathan Warner of Scituate; his former wife, Mary Graves Lay of Barnstable; and thirteen grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at "Tales of Cape Cod" in Barnstable at 11 a.m. on Oct. 2. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mary Washington Hospital, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, 1001 Sam Perry Boulevard, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401-4453

Hedwig Ann Roszko, 90

Hyannis - Hedwig Ann (Samborski) Roszko, 90, a retired secretary, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Pavilion in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Frank Roszko, who died in 1970.

Born and raised in Worcester, Mrs. Roszko lived in Worcester most of her life before moving to Hyannis 22 years ago.

She was a secretary for many years for the Karick Insurance Co. until her retirement in 1977 and previously worked for the Insurance Rating Bureau.

Mrs. Roszko was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Polish Club of Cape Cod and a member and past state commander of the Polish American Veteran's of World War II Women's Auxiliary.

Surviving are four sisters, Estelle Groat of Manhattan, N.Y., and Boca Raton, Fla., Constance McCabe of Milton, Jeannette H. Galkowski of Hyannis and Elizabeth Marc of Auburn and Providence, R.I.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral was held at Henry Funeral Home in Worcester, followed by burial in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.

Arthur D. Schirch Jr., 69

Hyannis - Arthur D. Schirch Jr., 69, died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was the husband of Shirley Schirch of West Yarmouth.

Mr. Schirch was born, raised and educated in Holyoke. He was a graduate of Holyoke High School. After high school, he joined the Navy and served in the South Atlantic during the Korean War. Upon his return he worked, as a heavy equipment instructor for the International Union of Engineers, Local 98.

Mr. Schirch moved to Cape Cod in 1986 continuing to work for the union's Local 4 in Provincetown. He was also the owner and operator of The Windmill Kitchen in South Yarmouth until his retirement in 1992.

He was a founding member of the Holyoke Youth Hockey Program, as well as a past president of the organization.

He was a member of The American Legion of Yarmouth, the VFW of Yarmouth, Amvets of Falmouth and attended Saint Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.

He enjoyed working with hands and working on cars.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Arthur D. Schirch III of Hyannis, Stephen E. Schirch of Northhampton and Timothy W. Schirch of Hyannis; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at Saint Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis. Burial was at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Armand A. 'Chub' Cournoyer, 77

Yarmouthport - Armand A. "Chub" Cournoyer, 77, a World War II veteran and former prisoner of war, died of cancer Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999 at his home.

He was the husband of Marjorie (Murphy) Cournoyer for 53 years.

Born in Webster, Mr. Cournoyer was raised in Whitinsville and graduated from Northbridge High School in 1940. He also attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Rhode Island School of Design. He lived in Uxbridge for 20 years and retired to Yarmouthport.

A World War II veteran, he served in the European Theater as a waist gunner on B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft. After several successful missions, his B-17 was shot down by enemy fire. He parachuted from the burning airplane, but was captured by the Germans and spent 15 months as a prisoner of war. He was awarded the prestigious Air Medal for his military service.

Mr. Cournoyer began his career after high school as an apprentice at Whitin Machine Works of Whitinsville and worked for that company for more than 40 years, retiring as graphic arts project engineer. Five of those years were spent in Franklin, Tenn., at the ATF Davidson Plant, a subsidiary of White Consolidated Industries.

An expert woodworker, he hand-crafted Nantucket baskets, Shaker reproductions, desks, clocks and many other original works of art. He also designed a charming backyard garden, where he enjoyed spending time.

Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Dr. Barry R. Cournoyer of Indianapolis, Reed P. Cournoyer of Somerville, Eric J. Cournoyer of Uxbridge and James P. Cournoyer of Centerville; five daughters, Catherine J. Grimes of Whitinsville, Polly L. Rains of Duncanville, Texas , Jo Ann Beranyk of Yarmouthport, Jane Ann McNicol of Carlyss, La., and Patrice R. Blackburn of Brookfield, Ill.; an aunt; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Alan M. Devaney, 67

South Dennis - Alan M. Devaney, 67, a retired Barnstable schoolteacher, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999 at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He was the husband of Louise M. (Murphy) Devaney for 44 years.

Born and raised in Brighton, he was a graduate of Boston English High School and, in 1954, earned a bachelor's degree in business from Boston College. He later received a master's degree in education from Bridgewater State College.

Mr. Devaney also served in the Navy for two years.

After his marriage, he settled in Wrentham until moving to South Dennis in 1967.

Mr. Devaney taught for several years in Franklin, prior to joining the Barnstable school system. He taught at Barnstable Middle School from 1967 until his retirement in 1994. Mr. Devaney also served as the tennis coach at the school and as the Town of Dennis beach supervisor for a number of years.

He was an avid reader and supporter of many Dennis youth sports. He enjoyed practicing the art of scrimshaw and was an active member of Self Help for the Hard of Hearing, or S.H.H.H.

Besides his wife, Mr. Devaney is survived by a daughter, Lynn A. Felix of Bridgewater; three sons, Mark A. Devaney of Tolland, Conn., and Brian Devaney and Jon Devaney, both of South Dennis; a brother, Joseph J. Devaney of Los Alamos, N.M.; and three grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Bruce Devaney.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Pius X Church, South Yarmouth. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.

Donna M. Devlin, 54

Hyannis - Donna Marie Devlin, 54, a longtime Hyannis resident, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 at The Greenery at Lewis Bay.

Born in Manchester, N.H., she was raised in South Boston, where she attended St. Augustine's School.

A resident of Hyannis for the past 20 years, she worked at Penguins Seagrill from 1982 to 1990, making pasta.

From 1990 until her illness last spring, she worked at Stop & Shop in Hyannis as a grocery bagger.

Known for her sweet disposition, she was especially fond of children and animals. She also enjoyed going to the movies.

She is survived by her parents, Walter A. and Helen E. (Kovall) Devlin of Randolph; and three brothers, Ronald C. Devlin of the Philippines and Paul S. Devlin and Alan M. Devlin, both of Randolph.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Hospital Foundation, 4 Bayview Street, Hyannis, MA 02601; or to The Greenery at Lewis Bay Activities Fund, 89 Lewis Bay Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Sharon A. Fish-Nebenfuhr, 45

Seattle - Sharon A. Fish-Nebenfuhr, 45, a native of Osterville, died Sept. 22,1999 at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

She was the wife of Gene Nebenfuhr for 17 years.

Born and raised in Osterville, she was a 1972 graduate of Barnstable High School, where she played field hockey, basketball and softball. She also graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1976 and was in the Peace Corps from 1977 to 1979 in Colombia, South America.

Mrs. Fish-Nebenfuhr moved to Seattle in 1981 and married in 1982. She worked for several years as a bank teller, then as a secretary for the Seattle PTSA and president of the Ballard PTA. She also organized the Whittier Heights Community Council to help raise funds for a new playground for the Whittier School.

She was currently a preschool teacher at the Ballard Free Methodist Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents, David and Sally Fish of Osterville; three daughters, Zoe, Bria and Liza Nebenfuhr, all of Seattle; three stepchildren, Kristal, Ryan and Karrie Nebenfuhr, all of Seattle; a brother, Doug Fish of Osterville; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held on the Cape at a later date.

David N. Fletcher, 55

Milford - David N. Fletcher, 55, of Boylston and Hyannis, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999 at the Sunbridge Care Center in Milford after a long illness with cancer.

He was the husband of Beverly (Selby) Fletcher.

Born in Worcester, Mr. Fletcher moved to Boylston 20 years ago and also had a second home in Hyannis for the past 15 years.

A graduate of North High School in Worcester, he also graduated from Worcester State College, received a master's degree in education from Clark University, Worcester and studied towards a doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

From 1969 to 1984, Mr. Fletcher was an elementary school teacher in the Worcester Public Schools. Since 1984, he owned and operated Fletcher Inc., an independent contracting business.

He was an accomplished alpine skier, a vintage car enthusiast and an avid traveler throughout the United States and Europe.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mary (Swanson) Fletcher of Worcester; two sisters, Barbara E. Fletcher of Worcester and Nancy M. Bourgeois of Holden; a niece; and a grandniece.

The funeral was at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Worcester. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery, Boylston.
