E. Mike Goodwin, 71

Cotuit - E. Mike Goodwin, 71, a retired naval commander, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999.

He was the husband of Mary B. Goodwin for 48 years.

Born in New Haven, Conn., Mr. Goodwin was raised in North Conway, N.H. He attended the University of New Hampshire and the University of Southern California. He also received a master's degree in public communications from Boston University.

Mr. Goodwin was a Navy pilot for 21 years, specializing in aerial recognizance. Notable among his worldwide assignments was his pivotal role in Operation Deep Freeze in 1964 and 1965 when he was based in Antarctica. He served as the aide to the admiral and photo officer. Goodwin's Peak in Antarctica, which stands at approximately 18,000 feet above sea level, was named in his honor.

Following his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Goodwin moved to Manchester, N.H. He was the airport manager at Manchester Airport for 16 years and was instrumental in the initiation and planning of that airport's expansion.

Mr. Goodwin retired to Cotuit in 1985 and became very active in community affairs. He was a trustee of the Cotuit Library, a member of the Manchester Rotary Club, Osterville Men's Club and Cotuit/Santuit Historical Society, volunteer at the Cahoon Museum and a founding member of the Over the Bridge Club.

An enthusiastic freshwater fisherman, he loved sailing with his friends on the Manana and yardsailing.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Michael Eastman Goodwin of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, Richard Goodwin of Roswell, N.M.; two granddaughters; several nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Mabel M. Moore, 78

Hyannis - Mabel M. Moore, 78, a retired social worker, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Manor in Hyannis after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late William R. Moore.

Born, raised and educated in West Barnstable, Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Barnstable High School. She was a member of the West Barnstable Laestadian Lutheran Church.

After high school, she graduated from New England Baptist School of Nursing in Boston. She later worked as a social worker for 20 years for the town of Barnstable Welfare Department until her retirement.

Her hobbies included oil painting.

Surviving are a son, Ivar R. Moore of Centerville; a brother, Joseph Pelton of Acton; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Crocker Park in West Barnstable.

Marion J. Powell, 92

Centerville - Marion J. Powell, 92, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999 at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville after a long illness.

Born and raised in Winchester, Ms. Powell lived briefly in Boston before she attended and graduated from Hampton Institute. She moved to Lake Charles, La., where she began her federal civilian career as a medical secretary in the Air Force.

Ms. Powell returned to Massachusetts in 1955 to accept a position at Otis Air Force Base, where she worked until her retirement.

She was a choir member of the Federated Church in Hyannis and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by a nephew, Bruce F. Jones of Swampscott; a stepniece, Marcia Russell of Winchester; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Regina Smith, 85

Centerville - Regina (Smykalski) Smith, 85, a longtime Centerville resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999 at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.

She was the wife of William Arthur Smith, who died in 1989.

Born and raised in Silver Lake, Minn., Mrs. Smith moved to Centerville in 1947.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church and a former member of the Women's Guild.

Surviving are three sons, Stephen A. Smith of Centerville, James M. Smith of Forestdale and Daniel R. Smith of Hopkinton; and five grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the C-O Volunteers, 1875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

John A. Zibutis, 83

Marstons Mills - John A. Zibutis, 83, a resident of Marstons Mills for 30 years, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a series of illnesses.

He was the husband of Frances (Petreikis) Zibutis for 51 years.

Born and raised in Boston, Mr. Zibutis graduated from South Boston High School in 1933. He received recognition as a distinguished graduate at his 50th reunion in 1983.

While in high school, he was a member of the baseball team and has been an avid lifetime fan of the sport.

His post-high school education included the study of diesel mechanics and cooking.

Prior to living on the Cape, he was a resident of Brockton for 18 years. He worked as a manager in the trucking and restaurant fields and as a postal clerk at the South Postal Annex in Newtonville and Buzzards Bay until his disability retirement.

During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater and retired as a staff sergeant. He was a driving instructor and managed a motor pool for Battery C 271st Field Artillery Battalion-First Cavalry Division.

Besides baseball, his interests included traveling, music, cooking, gardening, fishing and swimming.

He attended Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville until his illness.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, John F. Zibutis of Forestdale and Frank A. Zibutis of Hyannis; a daughter, Jeanette F. Taylor of Boston; a sister, Patricia Akule of Saugus; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office, 100 Charles Road Place, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.

Joseph Y. Melanson, 61

Osterville - Joseph Y. Melanson, 61, a resident of Osterville, died Oct. 13, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Pavilion after sustaining a spinal cord injury.

Mr. Melanson was born in New Brunswick, Canada, and served in the Navy from 1958 to 1962. He then made his home in Massachusetts.

A resident of the Cape for the past 22 years, Mr. Melanson worked for Sencorp Systems Inc. in Hyannis.

He also enjoyed shellfishing in Cape waters and cooking.

Surviving are two sons, Mark Melanson of Osterville and Daniel Melanson of Centerville; his former wife, Rita Melanson of Centerville; two sisters, three brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the CORD, 1019 Iyanough Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Robert M. Gill, 80

Osterville - Robert M. Gill, 80, a retired chief executive officer, died of heart failure Monday, October 18, 1999 at the New England Medical Center in Boston.

He was the husband of Joan Tucker Gill for 55 years.

Born in Boston, Mr. Gill lived in Concord for 42 years before retiring to Osterville and Vero Beach, Fla. He was a 1938 graduate of Kent School in Connecticut and a 1942 graduate of Yale University.

A World War II Navy veteran, he served on a destroyer in most of the major battles in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant commander.

From 1969 until his retirement in 1986, Mr. Gill was vice president of Turner Fisheries and president of Eastern Point Fisheries, both located in Boston. He had previously worked at Dewey and Almy, a division of WR Grace Co. in Cambridge.

Mr. Gill was past commodore of the Wianno Yacht Club and governor of the Wianno Club. He was also vice president and founder of the Three Bays Preservation in Osterville.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Robert T. Gill of Weston; two daughters, Beth Morris of Concord and Kathryn Wheeler of Essex, Conn.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville. Burial was private.

Richard L. Cole, 79

Yarmouthport - Richard L. Cole, 79, a retired sales engineer and manager, died Thursday, October 21, 1999 at the Hospice House in Barnstable after a long illness.

He was the husband of Patricia (Hine) Cole for 54 years.

Born in Jamestown, N.Y., Mr. Cole was a 1939 graduate of Jamestown High School and also graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1946.

A Marine Corps veteran, he served in the Caribbean and Pacific areas. He retired as captain with his final unit being Marine Bombing Squadron VMB 611.

From 1946 until his retirement in 1982, Mr. Cole was a sales engineer and manager for Hope's Windows Inc. in Boston and Jamestown, N.Y. He and his family lived in Framingham for 20 years before moving to the Cape.

He enjoyed working in his yard.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Jacquelyn A. Newson of Hyannis; a brother, Harold R. Cole of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Rodgers of Michigan; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two nephews.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Association of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to the Cape and Islands Regional Cancer Center, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod Inc., 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.

Casimir J. Lascaibar, 68

Cotuit - Casimir J. Lascaibar, 68, died Friday, October 22, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Manor after a long illness.

He was the husband of Irma I. (Larramendi) Lascaibar.

Born, raised and educated in Havana, Cuba, he came to the U.S. in 1960.

He lived in Miami, Fla., before moving to New York in 1961. He was a resident of Jersey City, N.J., from 1962 to 1980, where he worked as a truck driver and bus driver.

Mr. Lascaibar moved to Cotuit in 1980. He worked for Cape Cod Potato Chip Co. as head of maintenance until his retirement in 1987.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Charles Lascaibar of Cotuit and Albert A, Lascaibar of Hialeah, Fla.; a sister, Mercedes Barnet of Centerville; and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Christ the King Chapel, Mashpee Commons, Mashpee. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville.
