Margaret Murphy Alvezi, 87

Sandwich ­ Margaret Murphy Alvezi, 87, of Sandwich, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at JML Care Center in Falmouth.

She was the wife of Walter R. Alvezi for more than 57 years.

Mrs. Alvezi was born in Port Arthur, Texas and moved to Nantucket at age 2. She and her family moved to Sandwich where she attended schools from sixth grade through high school.

She attended the Hyannis State Teacher's College and taught at the Cyrus Peirce School on Nantucket from 1934 to 1946. She married Mr. Alvezi in 1942. After the war they moved to Sandwich where she taught at the Henry T. Wing School from 1957 until her retirement in 1975. She enjoyed travel and was an avid reader.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mary M. "Peggy" Alvezi of Centerville; a son, Walter E. Alvezi of Sandwich; and three grandchildren.

A funeral was celebrated at Corpus Christi Parish Center, Sandwich.

Harry Anderson, 90

Centerville ­ Harry Anderson, 90, a former painter and inn owner, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 at his niece's Centerville home.

He was the husband of Elsie (Bonvie) Anderson, who died in 1995.

Born in Pittston, Maine, Mr. Anderson moved to Wellesley as a young boy, where he attended Wellesley schools. He lived in Wellesley most of his life before moving to Centerville two years ago to live with his niece.

A longtime summer resident of the Cape, he and his wife owned and operated the Sjoholm Inn in West Falmouth for 12 years before selling it in the 1970s.

Mr. Anderson spent his working years as a painter and worked for various painting contractors. He was a member of the Painters Union in Boston and a former member of the Wellesley Lodge of Elks.

He also had a great love of animals.

He is survived by a niece, Sabrina Anderson Vaz of Centerville, with whom he lived.

Services were private.

Karen L. Bacon, 75

Hyannisport ­ Karen L. Bacon, 75, a resident of Hyannisport, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Born in Englewood, N.J., Mrs. Bacon graduated from the Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y., and from Smith College in Northampton. During World War II, she was a student in the nurse training program at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Mrs. Bacon loved animals and lived most of her life surrounded by dogs and horses. She was instrumental in establishing the Cape Cod Horse Show and supported many other riding events to benefit local charities.

She also loved sailing and was an active member of the Hyannisport Yacht Club Race Committee for many years.

Surviving are a daughter, Robin Greenwood of North Salem, N.Y.; three sons, Carter Bacon of Sherborn, Wells Bacon of Somesville, Maine, and Eric Bacon of Needham; two brothers, Derek Lagemann of Port Washington , N.Y., and Peter Lagemann of Greenwich, Conn.; and 13 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at St. Andrew's by the Sea in Hyannisport. Burial was private.

Sammie L. Bailey, 69

Hyannis ­ Sammie Lee (Maddox) Bailey, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

Born in Clayton, Ala., she moved to the Cape area in 1938. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1949 and from the Cape Cod Hospital Nursing School in 1962.

She was employed by the Social Security Administration and Otis Air Force Base in personnel administration for a total of 37 years of federal service.

Surviving are her parents, Samuel and Mary (Baker) Maddox; a daughter, Cheryl Carriere of the Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Eileen Lopes of Hyannis; two brothers, George Maddox and Harry Maddox, both of Hyannis; a granddaughter; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late Harold M. Bailey.

Burial was in the Oak Neck Cemetery, Hyannis.

Gertrude Banner, 94

Brewster ­ Gertrude Banner, 94, who leaves family on the Cape, died Dec. Wednesday, 22, 1999, at the Brewster Senior Care Center.

She was the wife of Irving Banner, who died in 1997.

Born in Patterson, N.J., she was a former resident of Florida and Staten Island, N.Y.

Mrs. Banner spent much of her life in the retail clothing business. She and her husband owned and operated several women's and children's clothing stores in Staten Island and New Jersey.

Surviving are two sons, David Banner of Centerville and Arnold Banner of Gorham, Maine; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services and burial were held privately in Florida.

Carmela Cangemi, 86

Sandwich ­ Carmela (Aiello) Cangemi, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999 at the Falmouth Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Sam Cangemi.

Born in Castelvetrano, Italy, she came to the United States at an early age and settled in New York, where she was raised and educated.

She moved to Laurelton, Long Island, N.Y., in the early 1950s and later to Lynbrook, Long Island in the late 1950s.

In the late 1970s Mrs. Cangemi moved to Malden. She became a Cape resident in 1980, moving to Sandwich four and one-half years ago.

She was a homemaker for most of her life and a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union

She enjoyed cooking and homemaking.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary T. Alexander of Cotuit; a sister, Mary Tine of Fla.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

A funeral Mass was celebratedy in Christ the King Chapel, Mashpee Commons.

Richard J. Casey, 73

Sandwich ­ Richard James Casey, 73, a retired merchandising manager, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home.

He was the husband of Margaret (Collins) Casey, who died in August 1999.

Born in Chelsea, Mr. Casey received a bachelor's degree from Boston College in 1949. He worked for Bradlee's for more than 30 years as a merchandising manager until retiring in 1991.

He was a resident of Sandwich for four years, moving from Plymouth where he had lived for 10 years.

Mr. Casey was a member of the Corpus Christi Parish in Sandwich. He enjoyed genealogy and did genealogy research and was a member of the Genealogy Society of America.

Surviving are seven sons, Richard J. Casey Jr. of Upton, John E. Casey of Milford, Robert J. Casey of San Antonio, Texas , Michael P. Casey of Dublin, Ohio, Christopher M. Casey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Stephen F. Casey of Freemont, Calif., and John D. Joliat of Waltham; three daughters, Margaret C. MacDonald and Anne M. Sullivan, both of Sandwich, and Elizabeth A. Hauck of Cupertino, Calif.; two brothers, Ralph Casey of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Robert Casey of Centerville; a sister, Elizabeth Saulnier of Sandy Hook, Conn.; 23 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the Corpus Christi Parish Center in Sandwich. Burial was in the Sandwich Town Cemetery.

Emma L. Cash, 79

Barnstable ­ Emma L. (Govoni) Cash, 79, a resident of Barnstable since 1945, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Mayflower Place Nursing Home in West Yarmouth.

She was the wife of the late Arthur Cash, Jr.

Mrs. Cash was born in Swampscott and raised and educated in Yarmouth. She was active in sports at the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School and helped establish the Class of 1940 Scholarship Fund.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Barabe of Barnstable and Mildred Dodd of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Robert Govoni of West Yarmouth; three sisters, Josephine Henderson and Alice Sprague, both of West Yarmouth, and Rose Wiinikainen of Centerville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late William Cash.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Barbara Crapo, 89

Falmouth ­ Barbara (Dunham) Crapo, 89, a well-known educator in Onset and Wareham schools for more than 30 years, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the JML Care Center in Falmouth.

She was the wife of the late George L. Crapo.

Born in Brockton, she graduated from Brockton High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Bridgewater State Teachers College.

A longtime resident of Wareham, she worked as an educator for more than 30 years in the Wareham public school system, teaching at the Onset and East Wareham schools, and serving as principal of the West Wareham, Pilgrim Memorial and John Decas schools.

Mrs. Crapo is survived by a daughter, Nancy C. Alger of Osterville; a son, Paul B. Crapo of Martin, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the JML Care Center, 184 Ter Heun Drive, Falmouth, Mass. 02540; the Church of the Good Shepherd, 74 High St., Wareham, Mass. 02571; or to a charity of one's choice.

Joan A. Ferguson, 66

Cotuit ­ Joan A. (Crowley) Ferguson, 66, a former supervisor for General Electric, died Thrusday, Dec. 23, 1999, at her home.

She was the wife of William Ferguson.

Born, raised and educated in New York City, Mrs. Ferguson was a resident of Mahopac, N.Y., from 1964 to 1987. She retired to the Cape in 1987.

An active member of Christ the King Parish, Mrs. Ferguson worked at the St. Vincent de Paul Center, volunteered for the Prayer Line, Noah Shelter, Library and Christmas Bazaar. She was also a sacristy volunteer and drove for the Mashpee Meals on Wheels program.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, William R. Ferguson of Glendale, Calif., and Kevin Ferguson of Marstons Mills; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Parish, Mashpee Commons. Burial was in Marstons Mills Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, Mass. 02675.
