Samuel R. Lowery, 84

Waquoit ­ Samuel R. Lowery, 84, retired general manager for a New Hampshire company, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Falmouth Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" (Nichols) Lowery for 36 years. He was also the husband of the late Virginia Prest Lowery.

Mr. Lowery was born in Boston and raised in Arlington. He was a graduate of Arlington High School and of the University of Massachusetts.

He worked for many years as general manager for F&S Transit Mix Co. in Manchester, N.H., retiring in 1972.

Mr. Lowery lived for many years in Durham, N.H., before moving to Marathon, Fla., in 1972. He lived in Waquoit since 1982.

He was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Falmouth. He loved sailing, gardening and shellfishing.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Jeffrey P. Lowery of Cotuit; a daughter, Linda C. Mullins of Boxford; three stepdaughters, Cheryl E. Cullimore of New Durham, N.H., Candace S. Lowe of Mountain View, Calif., and Robin V. Scott of Clearwater, Fla.; a stepson, Daniel N. Lowe of Holliston, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Chapel of St. Barnabas Memorial Church, Main Street, Falmouth. Burial is private.

Edwina W. Montcalm, 65

Marstons Mills ­ Edwina W. (Wheeler) Montcalm, 65, a former resident of Osterville, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Falmouth Hospital.

She was the wife of Harold Montcalm.

Born and educated in Hyannis, Mrs. Montcalm was raised and lived for many years in Osterville. She graduated from West Brook College and moved back to Osterville after college.

Mrs. Montcalm worked as a bookkeeper in the family business, Osterville Drug Store, and later as a secretary for the Steamship Authority and also for the Barnstable County Health Department. She retired in the 1970s to become a homemaker and raise her family.

She was a resident of Osterville until moving to Marstons Mills in 1970.

A past member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she enjoyed handicrafts, needlepoint and knitting.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Anthony W. Montcalm of Vail, Colo., and Andrew H. Montcalm of Marstons Mills; two stepsons, Warren J. Montcalm of Hyannis and Robert L. Montcalm of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a granddaughter.

Memorial donations may be to the C-O-MM Rescue Squad, 1875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, Mass. 02632.

Nancy Ann Norton, 62

Eastham ­ Nancy Ann Norton, 62, a resident of Eastham, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, of brain cancer.

Born in Detroit, she moved to Worcester in 1940, where she was raised by her aunt and older brother. She received a bachelor's degree in art history from Smith College, Northampton, and master's degrees from Assumption College, Worcester, and Syracuse University.

After graduation, she taught art history as a civilian with the military for three years in Japan and Germany, and studied for a year at the Accademia Di Belle Arte in Florence, Italy. She then returned to the United States and served as chair of the Art Department at the Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury for 10 years.

Upon her retirement from teaching, she moved to the Cape, where she was the co-owner of New Horizons Gallery at Peacock Alley in Orleans.

She is survived by a brother, Jack Norton of Osterville; and longtime friends and companions, Ann Berkey of Newburyport and Sandy Bockman of Eastham.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Chapel in the Pines, Samoset Road, Eastham.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Barbara C. Oppen

Hyannis ­ Barbara Camille (Cabral) Oppen, former owner of the Bonnie Doone Restaurant in Provincetown, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Richard Oppen of Provincetown and Miami Shores, Fla. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.

Mrs. Oppen was born and raised in Provincetown. She was a graduate of Edgewood Park Junior College in New York, where she majored in merchandising.

After her graduation, Mrs. Oppen was a John Robert Powers model in New York during the 1940s.

She then returned to Provincetown and went to work at the Bonnie Doone Grille, which her parents opened in 1937.

Mrs. Oppen and her husband moved to Provincetown from Cincinnati during their courtship and worked at the restaurant together for 38 years. They retired in 1986.

The couple summered in Miami Shores, Fla., where Mrs. Oppen was an active member of the Miami Shores Women's Club and the Miami Shores Country Club's Garden Club, where she often won awards for her floral designs. She was a superb cook and hostess, noted for her legendary parties, according to her family.

Mrs. Oppen was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Miami Shores, Fla. She was also a member of the Nautilus Club of Provincetown.

Besides her husband, survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Oppen Jordan of Clearwater, Fla., and Stacey Oppen Garvey of Queensbury, N.Y.; four grandchildren; an aunt and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Helen R. Stone, 74

Boothbay Harbor, Maine - Helen R. Stone, 74, who leaves a brother in Centerville, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was the wife of George Stone, who died in 1989.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., Mrs. Stone was a 1942 graduate of Belmont High School in Belmont, Mass., and attended Bridgewater State College.

Mrs. Stone worked at New England Telephone Co. for more than 40 years in Watertown, Mass., and Waltham, Mass. She retired to Boothbay Harbor.

A member and treasurer of the Coastal Club and Senior Citizens Group, Mrs. Stone was a member of the Boothbay Region YMCA and secretary for the Humane Society. She was also active at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

She is survived by a brother, Thomas J. Hazlett of Centerville; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice; or to the Boothbay Region Humane Society.

Virginia C. Young, 79

Centerville ­ Virginia Caroline Young, 79, a Cape resident since 1954, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Charles W. Young Jr.

Born and educated in Boston, Mrs. Young was a longtime resident of Dedham before moving to the Cape in 1954. She worked at State Street Bank & Trust for six years and married after World War II.

Mrs. Young was a member and past president of the Emblem Club of Hyannis and a member of The Oddfellows in Roslindale and Rebekah-Past Noble Grand. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Dedham and St. Mary's Church in Barnstable.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Russell A. Young of Centerville; a daughter, Nancy E. Powers of Londonderry, Vt.; a brother, George Albert of Davie, Fla., and Orleans; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service was held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 40 Speen Street, P.O. Box 1221, Framingham, Mass. 01701.

Joseph E. Bartell, 80

Hyannis ­ Joseph Evert Bartell, 80, a prominent building code administrator who retired to the Cape in 1983, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis of complications from a heart attack.

He was the husband of Olga Rank Bartell, who died in 1989. They had been married for 48 years.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., Mr. Bartell first worked in his father's construction business. He joined the Army shortly before World War II and served for a time at the North Truro radar station while he and his wife lived in the Beacon Hill district of Boston. During the war, he was a staff sergeant in the Eighth Air Force, serving in England and France.

Mr. Bartell returned to Ridgewood, N.J., after the war, where he became a fireman and then a building inspector. He became Ridgewood's chief building code official in 1948, and in 1958 he moved to Chicago, Ill., to become the technical director of Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA), a national organization for the development and coordination of local building codes. He soon rose to prominence in code administration, serving as the chief building code official successively for Prince George's County, Md., the City of St. Petersburg, Fla., the Commonwealth of Virginia, and finally for Henrico County, Va. Eventually, he became president of BOCA, and by the time of his death, he had been a BOCA member for more than 50 years.

In his retirement, he lived in Hyannis, first on West Main Street and then on Betty's Pond Road. He worked part time as a town building inspector, serving on the town Building Code Board of Appeals and the Capital Outlay Committee. He also served as a member and chairman of the town Planning Board.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the By-Law Committee of the Hyannis Fire District.

Mr. Bartell was active in civic affairs, elected to the school board in Orland Park, Ill., and running for Barnstable Selectman in 1987. He was a troop chairman for the Boy Scouts in Illinois and a troop and district chairman in Maryland. He was also an active member and president of the Finnish-American Society on the Cape.

Surviving are three children, Joseph E. Bartell of Wheaton, Md., Betty Anne Morss of Columbus, Ohio, and Richard E. Bartell of Ashland, Va.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable.

Mr. Bartell was buried beside his wife in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Lawrence W. Bishop, 81

Centerville ­ Lawrence W. Bishop, 81, a retired purchasing agent, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Myrtle (Norwood) Bishop.

Mr. Bishop was born in New Minas, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was a graduate of Walpole High School and during World War II served with the Army in the South Pacific. He was seriously wounded during the Leyte Campaign in the Philippines.

He worked as a purchasing agent for Bird & Sons in Walpole, retiring in 1980 when he moved to Centerville. Mr. Bishop was a life member of the D.A.V. No 90 in Norwood.

Besides his wife, Mr. Bishop leaves a son, Lawrence W. Bishop Jr. of Burlington; two brothers, William Bishop of Sharon and H. Herbert Bishop of Foxboro; and two grandsons.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
