Mary L. Powers, 79

West Barnstable ­ Mary L. (Ryan) Powers, 79, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Hospice House in Barnstable.

She was the wife of the late George Powers.

Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, she was raised and educated in Saugas.

She lived in Melrose for 35 years before moving to West Barnstable in 1979.

She is survived by a son, Michael G. Powers of Natick; a daughter, Carolyn Jean Conley of West Barnstable; two sisters, Theresa Ryan Howard of Ocean Bluff and Jean Ryan Hamby of Valdese, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Burial was in Crocker Park Cemetery, West Barnstable.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice House, 88 Railroad Ave., Barnstable, Mass. 02630.

Stanley E. Robbins, 75

Dennisport ­ Stanley E. Robbins, 75, a resident of Dennisport, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community­Manor after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Mary (Cruza) Robbins.

Born and educated in Dennis, he was raised and lived in Dennisport. He worked for the New Bedford Steam and Dry Co., and was a truck driver for F. W. Webb Co. He was also a taxi cab driver for Skip's Taxi Co. for more than 20 years.

Mr. Robbins was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the Occupation Forces in Japan. He enjoyed country music and dancing.

Surviving are a brother, Douglas Robbins of Hyannis; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8074, Telegraph Road, Dennisport, Mass. 02639.

Gerald J. Schraven, 69

Centerville ­ Gerald J. Schraven, 69, a resident of Centerville, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Mary E. (Cardamone) Schraven.

Mr. Schraven was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and a graduate of the University of Buffalo. He lived in Natick for 23 years and in Centerville for seven years.

A Korean War Navy veteran, he was a technical writer for GTE Sylvania in Needham. He retired in 1990.

He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, John A. Schraven of Fairfax, Vt.; a daughter, Judy A. Schraven of Richmond, Vt.; two brothers, Robert Schraven and Raymond Schraven, both of Buffalo, N.Y.; and two granddaughters.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Joslin Clinic, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, Mass. 02215.

Thelma Sloane, 79

Yarmouthport ­ Thelma (Worden) Sloane, 79, a resident of Yarmouthport, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the Center for Optimum Care in Mashpee.

She was the wife of the late Robert R. Sloane and the late Gerard Sloane.

Mrs. Sloane was born in Queens, N.Y., and a longtime resident of Port Washington , N.Y.

She moved to the Cape in 1994 and lived in Yarmouthport and Centerville.

Surviving are two daughters, Thelma Foster of Marstons Mills and Dorothy Harris of East Lansing, Mich.; two sons, David Sloane of Cambridge and Robert Sloane of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Alice Drybread of Denver, Colo., and Mary Emma Kreckman of St. Paul, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren.

Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701.

Inez Smith, 93

Provincetown ­ Inez (Ellis) Smith, 93, of Provincetown died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Cape End Manor after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Frank Henry Smith of Provincetown.

She was born in Brewster and graduated from Hyannis Normal School.

During the 1960s she worked at Adams Pharmacy. Mrs. Smith enjoyed singing and sang at town hall functions for many years and belonged to the choir at Provincetown United Methodist Church. She was a member of King Hiram's Eastern Star and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. She also enjoyed sewing and knitting.

She is survived by five daughters, Frances Atkins of Provincetown, Chickie O'Rork of Sandwich, Louise Meads of Provincetown, Elizabeth "Betty" Tinkham of Hyannis, and Margaret "Peggy" Perry of Stuart, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life was held in the Provincetown United Methodist Church.

Donations can be made in Mrs. Smith's name to the Gift Fund, Cape End Manor, 100 Alden St., Provincetown, MA 02657.

Edward A. Stocks, 62

Putnam, Conn. ­ Edward A. Stocks, 62, formerly of Putnam, Conn., died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in Groveland.

He was the husband of Ruth (Murphy) Stocks since 1958.

Born in Putnam, Mr. Stocks lived in Putnam most of his life before moving to Cotuit four years ago. He was a graduate of Putnam Trade School and a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam.

Mr. Stocks was a supervisor at the A & M Tool and Die Co. in Southbridge for 35 years. He was also a supernumerary for the Putnam Police Department for several years.

A former member of the Connecticut National Guard, he was a member of the Putnam Lodge of Elks No. 574.

His hobbies included stained glass work, traveling and landscaping his yard.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Dana Stocks of Bristol, England, and Dean Stocks of Putnam, Conn.; two daughters, Sandra Nelson of Groveland and Susan Satterly of Cortland, N.Y.; a brother, Timothy Stocks of Dayville, Conn.; two sisters, Patricia Day of Eastford, Conn., and Martha Laakso of Westmoreland, N.H.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, Putnam.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam.

Egle Wahtola, 85

Hyannis ­ Egle (Bratti) Wahtola, 85, a resident of Hyannis, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

She was the wife of the late William Wahtola.

Mrs. Wahtola was born and raised in Hyannis and was a 1933 graduate of Yarmouth High School.

During World War II, she was a member of the Women's Ordnance Workers at Camp Edwards.

A lifelong member of the Cummaquid Golf Club, she was a charter member of the Hyannis Women's Club and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary at Dennis F. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Emblem Club.

Surviving are a son, William Wahtola of Hyannis; three grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Laura M. Ziegler, 85

Centerville ­ Laura M. (Cox) Ziegler, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community­Pavilion in Hyannis.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., she was employed as a waitress and hostess in restaurants in Harvard Square

She lived in Concord for several years, where she worked as a waitress and hostess for the Colonial Inn, later settling in Acton for 17 years before taking up residence in Centerville two years ago.

Mrs. Ziegler often attended classes and events at the Acton Senior Center, and especially enjoyed painting in watercolors.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara J. Brown, with whom she made her home in Centerville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Acton. Burial followed in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Alfred J. Caouette, 87

Hyannis ­ Alfred J. Caouette, 87, a longtime resident of Hyannis, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Marion (Baker) Caouette.

Born in Winchendon, Mr. Caouette lived in Fitchburg for many years and was a resident of Hyannis for 43 years.

He was a self-employed painter and paperhanger until retiring in 1976.

An avid golfer, Mr. Caouette was a member of the Cotuit Highground Golf Club and Holly Ridge Golf Club, where he still holds the course record. He had 11 holes-in-one and had three in one day.

One of his biggest thrills was meeting John F. Kennedy in person.

Surviving are three daughters, Nancy Marsh of Stowe, Susan George of Sandwich and Beth Caouette of Hyannis; two sons, Bernard Caouette of Petersham and John Caouette of Charlton; two brothers, Henry Caouette of Ashburnham and Leo Caouette of Texas ; two sisters, Rachael Caouette of Florida and Carol Collette of Leominster; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hyannis Fire Firefighters Relief Association, 95 High School Road Extension, Hyannis, Mass. 02601.
