By the end of the war, Colonel Coyne was in command of 3,000 men. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Presidential citation, Bronze Star and the Distinguished Unit citation.

Colonel Coyne was also awarded the French citation for his part in helping to wipe out the Colmar Pocket in Italy, commanding his 155mm howitzer battalion in an attack against two German Mark IV tanks and outwitting the enemy. At the time, 155mm howitzers were not to be fired while moving or on targets within five miles. But Colonel Coyne ordered the gun section to get ready while he went up the hill to call the shots. Although unorthodox, it worked as on the third salvo, the tanks were knocked out.

He was then appointed commandant (president) of the Army Management School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, before moving to the position of division director, management analysis and personnel, for NASA in Washington , D.C., in 1964.
