S. Alan Becker, 80

West Barnstable - S. Alan Becker, 80, former commissioner of the Barnstable Municipal Airport, died of a heart attack Feb. 20, 2000 at his home.

Mr. Becker was born in Brockton and graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania . Upon graduating, he entered the Army, where he served in the European Theater, primarily in England and Belgium, from 1942 to 1946. He continued his military service in the Army Reserves, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in the 94th Infantry Division.

Prior to retiring permanently to the Cape in 1981, he lived in Boston, where he was employed as a financial analyst, managing editor of the Securities Research Co. and vice president of the United Business Service Co. (1951-1982).

Long active in civic affairs, Mr. Becker also served on the boards of the Cape Cod Symphony, the Whelden Library and the Cape Cod Opera. In 1991 he was the recipient of the Symphony award as Volunteer of the Year.

Mr. Becker gave many years of service to the American Lung Association of Greater Norfolk County, serving as its president and as president of the Massachusetts State Lung Association from 1988 to 1990. He was also affiliated for many years with the Boston Center for Adult Education, serving as its president from 1976 to 1981.

He is survived by a sister, Ruth B. Allen of Falls Church, Va.; two nieces; and a longtime friend, Allan W. Roberts of West Barnstable.

A memorial service was held at the Whelden Library, Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery.

Linda J. Bolt, 51

Willimantic, Conn. - Linda J. Bolt, 51, who leaves family on the Cape, died Friday. March 3, 2000 at Hartford Hospital.

She was the wife of Robert Bolt for 28 years.

Born in Springfield, Mass., Mrs. Bolt lived in Willimantic all her life. She was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Family in Baltic and attended New York University and the University of Connecticut.

Prior to her illness, she worked for 25 years at Aetna in Hartford.

Mrs. Bolt was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Willimantic, serving as a Sunday School teacher, vestry member and church treasurer. She was also involved as a volunteer for CT Special Olympics and provided respite care.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Marilyn Whaley of Hyannis; three children, Adam Bolt, Rebecca Bolt and Lindsay Bold, all of Willimantic; two sisters, Elaine Bolt of South Windham and Corinne Whaley of Willimantic; a brother, Clifton Whaley Jr. of Hyannis; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 220 Valley St., Willimantic. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Calvin A. 'Cal' Burlingame Sr., 73

Hyannis - Calvin A. "Cal" Burlingame Sr., 73, a native Cape Codder and Red Sox player, died Friday, March 3, 2000 at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Ethel (O'Brien) Burlingame.

Mr. Burlingame was born in Cotuit and educated in Barnstable schools. He served in the Army during World War II.

After the war, he worked as a foreman for John Hinckley & Sons in Hyannis. He also had his own tile installation business and provided maintenance for the Barnstable Housing Authority.

Mr. Burlingame played Cape League baseball and was an All-Star.

In the 1940s, Mr. Burlingame was drafted by the Red Sox and played for their triple A club.

He was an umpire for Cape League, Babe Ruth, and Little League Baseball. He officiated basketball, football and volleyball.

Mr. Burlingame was an avid golfer and bowler.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Calvin A Burlingame Jr. of Oviedo, Fla; Ronald R. Burlingame of West Barnstable and Scott W. Burlingame of Hyannis; three daughters, Rhoda F. Pena of Hyannis, Nadine R. Gifford of Hyannis and Janmarie Alence of Marstons Mills; a brother Carl "Herb" Burlingame of West Yarmouth; a sister, Marlene Frazier of Hyannis; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral and burial were private.

Marion G. Burton, 91

Beaumont - Marion G. Burton, 91, formerly of Cummaquid, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000 at a local nursing home.

She was the wife of Frank H. Burton, who died in 1994.

Born and educated in West Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Burton lived in Worcester for 23 years before returning to West Hartford. She retired to the Cape in 1974.

Mrs. Burton was a member of the St. Mary's Episcopal Church in West Barnstable, where she was involved in many of the church activities.

As an artist and craftsperson, she was noted for her wood carvings, oil paintings, pastels and sterling silver jewelry.

Surviving are four sons, Barrie Burton of Shrewsbury, David Burton of Durham, N.H., F. Stevenson Burton of Damariscotta, Maine, and Peter Burton of Phoenixville, Pa.; a daughter, Joanne Bonney of Estacada, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Barnstable. Burial follwed in the Lothrop Hill Cemetery, West Barnstable.

Grace Davies, 76

Centerville - Grace (Kelley) Davies, 76, a resident of Centerville since 1969, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000 at her home.

She was the wife of Thomas J. Davies for 53 years.

Born in Woburn, Mrs. Davies was raised in Winchester and attended Burdette College. She also lived in New York, where she raised her family until moving to the Cape.

She enjoyed sailing, golfing, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Wayne J. Davies of Sandwich and Steven J. Davies of Marlboro; a daughter, Patricia D. Steacy of Centerville; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut Street, Brockton, MA 02401; or to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Mary G. Ellis, 85

Centerville - Mary Georgette (Morris) Ellis, 85, who worked for the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce for more than 35 years, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000 at her home.

She was the wife of the late Edward M. Ellis.

Born in Guthrie, Okla., she was a Cape Codder and lived on Cape Cod most of her life. Mrs. Ellis traced her lineage to the Mayflower and was a direct descendant of Thomas Howes, who settled in Dennis in 1637.

She worked for the chamber of commerce until having a stroke a few years ago. In 1990, Gov. Michael Dukakis presented her with the Spirit of Massachusetts Tourism Hospitality Award.

She is survived by two sons, Donald E. Ellis of Sagamore and Edward Ellis of Bourne; a daughter, Patricia A. Mitchell of Centerville; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

She was also the mother of the late Michael G. Ellis.

A funeral was held at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd. (Route 28), Bourne.

Burial was at Sagamore Cemetery.

Joanne P. Hickey-Pittman, 42

Sudbury, Vt. - Joanne Patricia Hickey-Pittman, 42, formerly of East Sandwich, who leaves family on the Cape, died Monday at the Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

She was the wife of James C. Pittman since 1988.

Mrs. Pittman was born in Attleboro, Mass., and was a resident of Subury since 1996, moving from East Sandwich. She received her early education in Mansfield (Mass.) schools, graduating from Mansfield High School in 1976, and also attended the University of Massachusetts.

A medical assistant, she worked at the Walpole OB/GYN Clinic in Walpole, Mass., and later at the Cape and Island's Lab in Hyannis. She worked in the billing department at Porter Hospital for the past four years.

In her earlier years, she attended the Forestdale Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She was also involved in several charities over the years.

While in Vermont, she enjoyed raising Holstein dairy cows and caring for her pet Jersey, Prudence.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her father, James J. Hickey of Sudbury; a daughter, Autumn Bishop of Providence, R.I.; a stepson, Jedediah Pittman of Buzzards Bay; four brothers, Gerald Hickey and Paul Hickey, both of Mansfield, Mass., Michael Hickey of Farmington, Maine, and Patrick Hickey of Hyannis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held at the Forestdale Baptist Church in Forestdale.

A private graveside committal service and burial will be held at a later date in Quaker Cemetery, Sandwich.

William J. Hoffman, 83

Hyannis - William J. Hoffman, 83, a longtime Hyannis resident, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000 in Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Florida.

He was the husband of Dolores (Frederick) Hoffman of Hyannis.

Born in Charlotte, Prince Edward Island, Canada, Mr. Hoffman was raised on Cape Cod. Following graduation from Barnstable High School, he went on to the Staunton Military Academy and then graduated from Duke University in North Carolina.

Mr. Hoffman joined the Army in World War II, serving in Europe with the U.S. Intelligence Department. After the war, he served in military government as a foreign service officer and later with the U.S. State Department in foreign service.

Mr. Hoffman married in 1948 and settled in Hyannis in 1952. He founded and managed the Telerental Service of Hyannis.

In 1987, Mr. Hoffman retired and moved to Punta Gorda, Fla. He was in the process of moving back to Hyannis at the time of his death.

Mr. Hoffman was an avid boater and a very active member of the Cape Cod Power Squadron. He also was a member of the Hyannis Rotary Club and a member of the Punta Gorda Isles Florida Civic Association.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Karl William Hoffman of Craig, Colo.; and a daughter, Margo Whartonpisacano of Hyannis; a brother, Paul Hoffman of Wisconsin; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was followed by burial at Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville.
