Marion W. Griffin, 96

Marstons Mills - Marion W. Griffin, 96, a retired U.S. Postal Service supervisor, died at home March 17, 2000 after an illness.

He was the husband of the late Marie (Mahood) Griffin.

Mr. Griffin was born, raised and educated in High Point, N.C. At an early age he moved to New York City. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and at one time worked for Aetna Insurance.

In 1969, he moved to Mashpee and in 1978 he moved to Marstons Mills.

Mr. Griffin was a founding member of the Cape Cod Council of Doers. He was instrumental in the acquisition of land for the Mashpee Senior Center. He enjoyed playing bridge.

He is survived by his companion, Amalia P. Gourdin of Marstons Mills; a nephew, James Cobb of Tarrytown, N.Y., and several other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 1 in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road (Route 28), Marstons Mills.

Millard H. Letts, 79

Hyannis - Millard H. Letts, 79, who leaves family on the Cape, died March 15, 2000 at his home after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Beatrice Letts.

Born in New Haven, Conn., Mr. Letts was raised in Old Saybrook, Conn.

A World War II Army veteran, he served with the 102nd Reconnaissance Troop in Europe. After his military service, Mr. Letts lived in West Haven, Conn., and worked at the Southern New England Telephone Co. for 35 years.

In 1982, Mr. Letts and his wife retired to Suntree, a golfing community in Melbourne, Fla., where they enjoyed golfing, good friends and world traveling.

After living in Florida for almost 20 years, he and his wife moved to the Cape last year to be closer to family in New England.

Mr. Letts was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis and a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Connecticut Union of Telephone Workers. He was also a member of the New Haven Chapter of the Apollo Singing Society.

Surviving besides his wife are three stepsons, Michael J. Neylan of New Hampshire, John S. Neylan Jr. and Wayne Galloway; a stepdaughter, Sally Neylan Okun of Barnstable; two sisters, Irene Wenker and Marion Bulgren of Vermont; and three grandchildren.

A gathering is planned for April 15 at the Whitehall Estate to celebrate his life.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to a charity of one's choice.

Joseph Lydon, 88

Marstons Mills - Joseph Lydon, 88, a Cape resident for the past three years, died March 19, 2000 at South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center, Fla.

He was the husband of Evelynn (Whitten) Lydon for 60 years.

Born and educated in Boston, Mr. Lydon lived in Marstons Mills for the past three years and previously lived in Milton for 40 years.

Mr. Lydon worked as a court officer for the Boston Juvenile Court until 1971 after 20 years of service. He then worked for the Boston Redevelopment Authority for two years until his retirement from the city of Boston in 1973. He also had worked in the Boston Mayor's Office as a secretary for Mayor John B. Hynes in the early 1950s.

A World War II Navy veteran, he was a former active member of the Milton Democratic Town Committee.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Leslie Anderson of Milton; a brother, Martin Lydon of Weymouth; two sisters, Mary Nee of Marstons Mills and Rita Gill of Vero Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Wilma J. Martin, 69

Marstons Mills - Wilma J. (McLaughlin) Martin, 69, a retired nurse, died March 20, 2000 at her home after a long illness.

She was the wife of Joseph D. Martin for 51 years.

Born and raised in Taunton, Mrs. Martin moved to West Yarmouth in 1968. She worked as a licensed practical nurse for many years and also managed Signor Pizza in South Yarmouth with her husband until 1980 when they moved to Sanford, Maine.

In Maine, she and her husband co-owned a convenience store.

She moved to Marstons Mills in 1985 to retire and help take care of her grandchildren.

Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Linda Martin and Joanne Desrosiers, both of Marstons Mills, and Bridget Martin of Centerville; two sisters, Nancy Lowe of Sarasota, Fla., and Ann Freeman of Massachusetts; a brother, Joseph McLaughlin of Massachusetts; and five grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the C-O-MM Rescue Squad, 1875 Falmouth Road (Route 28), Centerville, MA 02632.

Theresa M. McGovern, 73

Waltham - Theresa M. (Cormier) McGovern, 73, a long-time school-crossing guard, died March 19, 2000 at Deaconess Waltham Hospital.

She was the wife of Paul J. McGovern.

Mrs. McGovern was born in Waltham and lived there for many years. She worked as a school-crossing guard from 1956 until her retirement in 1986.

She lived in Marstons Mills from 1986 to 1997.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Paul J. "Buster" McGovern and Michael F. "Mugga" McGovern, both of Waltham; a brother, Arthur Cormier of Framingham; a sister, Stella Doucette of Natick; and many nieces and nephews.

Conjetta R. 'Connie' Passaro, 86

East Dennis - Conjetta R. "Connie" (Scudero) Passaro, 86, of East Dennis, former owner of the East Sandwich Package Store, died March 25, 2000 at her home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Alferio Passaro, who died in 1993.

Mrs. Passaro was raised and educated in Brooklyn, N.Y., and attended business school in New York City.

After her marriage, she lived in Brooklyn and Van Nuys, Calif., before settling in Centerville in 1951. She and her husband owned and operated the East Sandwich Package Store for 12 years. They later moved to South Yarmouth and finally to East Dennis in 1971.

Mrs. Passaro was a communicant of Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster. She enjoyed playing scrabble, reading, cooking and gardening.

She is survived by a daughter, Leticia M. Forker of East Dennis, a son, Fred Passaro of East Dennis; two stepdaughters, Geraldine J. Tortora of South Yarmouth and Norma Omansky of Sun City, Fla.; two sisters; Rosemarie Muniz of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Florence Falanga of Ridge, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Richard J. Salamon, 67

Glastonbury, Conn. - Richard J. Salamon, 67, a summer resident of Osterville, died March 22, 2000.

He was the husband of Marie (Delizia) Salamon for 39 years.

Born in Palmer, Mass., Mr. Salamon lived in Glastonbury for 33 years. He graduated from Palmer High School and received a bachelor's degree in biology from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., in 1953.

Mr. Salamon entered the Air Force, serving from 1954 to 1957 during the Korean War in both England and the United States. He then received a master's degree in education in 1960 from the American International College in Springfield, Mass.; C.A.G.S. in 1964 and Ph.D. in science education in 1968 from the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

From 1959 to 1965, he was a science teacher at Warren High School. He was a professor in the Department of Physics and Earth Science at Central Connecticut University in New Britain from 1966 until retiring in 1997.

He was a communicant of St. Dunstan's Church in Glastonbury.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Ann M. Salamon O'Brien of Canton; two grandchildren; and several aunts and cousins.

Lorraine Stanish, 77

Guilford, Conn. - Lorraine (Githens) Stanish, 77, who leaves family on the Cape, died unexpectedly March 22, 2000 at her daughter's home in Centerville.

She was the wife of the late Peter Stanish. They had been married for 42 years.

Mrs. Stanish was born in Hamden, Conn., and lived in Guilford for more than 50 years.

She worked for the New Haven Railroad and in the Guilford public school system for 20 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Joan Melroy of Hyannis and Patricia McDonald of Centerville; two sons, Peter Stanish and Thomas Stanish, both of Guilford; a sister, Francis Blakeslee of New Haven; a brother, Harry Githens of Venice, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert A. White , 87

Marstons Mills - Robert A. White , 87, a Cape resident, died March 22, 2000 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Edith (Sprague) White .

Born in Foxboro, Mr. White was a resident of Marstons Mills for the past 15 years, moving from Foxboro.

Mr. White had worked during his life as a dairy farmer.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Charles Goddard of Marstons Mills; two daughters, Marcia Street of Rehoboth and Edith Lynn Hayes of West Barnstable; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Edith J. Hughes.

Gale E. Ambrose, 88

Bass River - Gale Elliott Ambrose, 88, a resident of Bass River, died April 5, 2000.

She was the wife of Edward W. Ambrose, who died in 1978.

Born in Little Falls, N.Y., Mrs. Ambrose was raised in Somerville and Westboro and was a graduate of Westboro High School. After high school, she attended Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene in Boston.

Upon her certification of dental hygiene, Mrs. Ambrose worked as a dental hygienist in several locations, including Lansing, Mich., and Spokane, Wash., and lastly for Dr. Chas. Haskell and son Dr. Richard Haskell in Hyannis. She worked in this field for approximately 40 years until her retirement in 1972.

During World War II, she worked at the military base on Mare Island, Calif., in the paint laboratory.

She had been active as a volunteer with the American Red Cross as well as other community service activities in the Bass River area.

Mrs. Ambrose was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable. She enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Surviving are a son, Stephen E. Ambrose of Windham, with whom she had lived since November; a brother, James Elliott of Northport, Maine; and a sister, Barbara Shewan of Stonybrook, N.Y.
