Maria L. "Ma" Robie, 78

West Barnstable - Maria L. "Ma" (Rocha) Robie, 78, died April 4, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston of heart failure.

She was the wife of the late William "Tex" Robie.

Born in New Bedford, she was raised and educated in Barnstable.

Known as "Ma" to all who knew her, Mrs. Robie was the salad and pastry cook at the former Wursthaus Restaurant in Hyannis and after her retirement, continued to enjoy baking and gardening.

She was a member of AARP Chapter 277 and the Progressive Club of Cape Cod. She could always be seen on her morning walks along 6A.

Mrs. Robie is survived by her daughter, Diane Foster of Barnstable; two sisters, Katherine Haydon, also of Barnstable, Frances Hogan of Yarmouthport; one brother, Manny Rocha of Hyannis; one granddaughter; one step-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the West Barnstable Fire & Rescue, Route 149, West Barnstable, MA 02668 or a charity of one's choice.

Dorothy L.G. Shaw, 88

Centerville - Dorothy L.G. (Libby) Shaw, 88, an oil and acrylic painter, died April 2, 2000, at the Royale Nursing Home in Falmouth.

A resident of Centerville, Mrs. Shaw worked as an operator for New England Telephone Co. for many years.

She was also an avid oil and acrylic painter, and gardener.

Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte Proctor; a son, Richard; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Richard S. Shreve, 88

Osterville - Richard S. Shreve, 88, of Osterville died April 3, 2000, at his home after a long illness.

He was the husband of Eloise (Honnet) Watson. He was also the husband of the late Mary Elizabeth (Wampole) Shreve for more than 50 years.

Born in Salem, Mass., Mr. Shreve attended Middlesex School and graduated from Loomis Chaffee. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1936 before becoming the fourth generation to enter the family business of Shreve, Crump and Low, Boston jewelers, where he worked for 49 years. He retired as president in 1978.

In 1970 Mr. Shreve was the first New Englander and one of only a few Americans elected an associate of the Wardens and Commonalty of the Mystery of Goldsmiths of the City of London, England, in recognition of his "notable contribution to the gold, silver or jewelry industry."

Mr. Shreve was an honorary member and former president of the Jewelers Club of Boston and a member of the Boston Society, Massachusetts Society Colonial Wars, and of the Salem Marine Society. He was a former member of the Country Club of Brookline, the Milton Hoosic Club and the Somerset at Algonquin Clubs, and a charter member of Heritage Plantation. He was a member of the Wianno Club and Hyannis Yacht Club.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Sally Cutler of Cincinnati, Katharine Frazer of Charlottesville, Va., and Elizabeth Mosher of Antrim, N.H.; a stepson, H. Russell Watson III of New Fairfield, Conn.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.

Anna Stec, 86

Cotuit - Anna (Andrejko) Stec, 86, a Cape resident for the past 23 years, died April 6, 2000, at Falmouth Hospital.

She was the wife of Joseph Stec.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Stec was a resident of Nassau County, Long Island, N.Y., and lived in Cotuit the last 23 years.

She was a communicant of St. Jude's Chapel in Santuit and Christ the King Parish in Mashpee.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Lorraine Meigel of Southampton, N.Y.; a brother, William Andrejko of Queens, N.Y.; four sisters, Margaret Kondas, Evelyn Kozak, Dorothy Ligarzewski and Florence Andrejko, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.

Joseph Stefens, 83

Centerville - Joseph Stefens, 83, a retired lawyer for the Commercial Union Insurance Co., died April 3, 2000, at the Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth.

He was the husband of the late Wanda Stefens.

Mr. Stefens was born in Three Rivers, Mass. He moved to Poland with his family as a child. When World War II broke out, he was interned in a German prisoner of war camp.

After the war, he was repatriated to the United States. He worked his way through school, earning degrees from Harvard University and Boston University School of Law. He worked as a bond claims attorney in New Hampshire, Cape Cod and Boston.

Mr. Stefens retired to Centerville and became a strong advocate for the Police Society of Cape Cod and the Islands, where he and his late wife worked on many issues.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Stefens of Emmaus, Pa.; a daughter, Valerie Thomas of Plymouth; and eight grandchildren.

Frederick P. Tighe, 84

Osterville - Frederick P. Tighe, 84, a 20-year Cape resident, died April 3, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion in Hyannis after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Louise (Gauthier) Tighe.

Born in Boston, Mr. Tighe graduated from Dorchester High School and Quincy Junior College. He was a resident of the Cape for 20 years.

During World War II, he served on the Navy aircraft carrier Bellow Wood as an aerial photographer and was one of the first landing parties in Japan.

He was a member of the Quincy Police Department for 32 years, retiring as captain of the Detective Bureau.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Joanne Marinilli of Stoughton; two sons, Kenneth Tighe of Harwich and Joseph Tighe of Abington; and nine grandchildren.

Myrtle F. Vargo, 85

Centerville - Myrtle F. (Wright) Vargo, 85, a Cape resident since 1989, died April 6, 2000, at the Windsor Nursing Home in South Yarmouth after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Charles Vargo.

Born in Perham, Maine, Mrs. Vargo lived in Maine until her marriage. After her marriage, she lived in many places with her husband, who was in the military service.

Before moving to Centerville in 1989 to live with her daughter, she lived in North Dakota and South Carolina.

Mrs. Vargo was a telephone operator in Maine and in Guam. While living in North Dakota, she was a secretary at the hospital in Grand Forks.

Surviving are two daughters, Rhonda Welch-Rosati of Centerville and Lorraine Dowdy of Dallas; two sisters, Vivian McDaniel of Florida and Viva McDaniel of South Carolina; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Florence D. Wilcox, 85

Centerville - Florence D. (Duffin) Wilcox, 85, of Centerville died April 8, 2000, at the Greenery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hyannis after a long illness.

Mrs. Wilcox was born in Northhampton and raised in Osterville. She was a 1933 graduate of Barnstable High School. She later attended the Abigail Adams Eliot Nursery Training School in Boston.

She settled in Millis Beach, Ind., and later in Rowayton, Conn. She worked for the Norwalk Hospital business office.

She retired from full-time employment in 1982 and moved back to Cape Cod, settling in the Centerville area. She worked for a short time at the Scottish Lion in Osterville.

Mrs. Wilcox enjoyed playing bridge and appreciated fine music. She was an enthusiastic patron of symphony productions. She was a member of the Guild of the Cape Cod Conservatory.

She is survived by two sons, Andrew A. Wilcox of Madison, Wis., and Jeffrey Wilcox of Saugatuck, Mich.; a sister, Doris D. Smith of Centerville, with whom she lived; and two nephews.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Donations in Mrs. Wilcox's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Cape Cod and the Islands Chapter 895, Mary Dunn Road, Hyannis, MA 02601, or to a charity of one's choice.

Allen H. 'Cy' Bearse, 85

Centerville - Allen H. "Cy" Bearse, 85, a former house mover, died April 10, 2000, at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville after a long illness.

He was the husband of Amanda "Molly" (Pires) Bearse, who died in 1988.

Mr. Bearse was a house mover for more than 40 years for the Hayden Building Movers of Cotuit.

A well-known Cape golfer, he won a number of local tournaments. He was a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 206, where he was post commander, past judge advocate and executive committee member.

He is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth DeGrace and Frances Peters, both of Hyannis; and several nieces and nephews.

Melissa N. Champagne, 38

Forestdale - Melissa N. (Gayer) Champagne, 38, a resident of Forestdale, died April 13, 2000, at Falmouth Hospital.

She was the wife of John Brian Champagne.

Born in Quincy, Mrs. Champagne was a graduate of Barnstable High School. She also graduated from Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable and was director II certified by the Massachusetts Office for Child Care Services.

Her love for life found expression beyond her family in day care, afterschool services, in her flower gardens and in creative crafts.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, William, Daniel, Michelle, Tanya and Nichol; her father, Edward M. Gayer of New Bedford; her mother and stepfather, Noelle Gayer Sisson and the Rev. Robert E. Sisson of Brewster; a brother, Damon Gayer of Falmouth; and a sister, Leslie Gayer of Hyannis.
