John M. 'Jack' Berto Jr., 68

Florence, Ariz. - John M. "Jack" Berto Jr., 68, a former Cape resident, died unexpectedly May 19, 2000, at his home in Arizona.

Born in New Bedford, Mr. Berto was raised in Marion and attended Greater New Bedford Vocational- Technical High School prior to serving in the Coast Guard from 1952 to 1960.

Mr. Berto began his career on Martha's Vineyard, working for Coughlin Electric, now Commonwealth Electric. He was line supervisor in the Hyannis area, retiring in 1991.

He lived in Yarmouth before settling in Brewster in 1979 and moved to Florence in 1996.

A member of the Elks, he was a member of the Moose and a past president of the West Barnstable Deer Club. He loved the outdoors and was an enthusiastic recreational vehicle traveler.

He is survived by his companion, Holly Landers; a son, Michael W. Berto of Brewster; a daughter, Tracy L. Taylor of East Orleans; a brother, Warren Berto of Marion; three grandchildren; and a nephew.

He was also the father of Christopher L. Berto, who died in 1997.

Irene R. Cole

Mashpee - Irene R. (Stevens) Cole, a resident of Mashpee, died of ovarian cancer May 21, 2000, at her home.

She was the wife of Ernest J. Cole Jr.

Born and raised in Ithaca, N.Y., Mrs. Cole was a graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo and did graduate work at Ohio State University. She was an assistant dean of students at Geneseo and a teacher and librarian in New York and Massachusetts for many years.

Mrs. Cole taught Sunday school and was a Campfire leader, library volunteer and a food pantry volunteer. She also enjoyed sports, sewing, gardening and was an avid reader.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Osterville.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Florence Rightmyer of Ithaca, N.Y.; two daughters, Christine Stevens of Fort Collins, Colo., and Joy Stevens of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Owen Stevens of Ontario, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Ellars of Pepperell and Amy Cole of Brighton; a sister, Mary Bolton of Rochester Hills, Mich.; two brothers, Robert Rightmyer Jr. of State College, Pa., and Bruce Rightmyer of Ithaca, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mashpee Good Neighborhood Fund, P.O. Box 798, Mashpee, MA 02649; or to the Outreach Committee, United Methodist Church, 57 Pond St., Osterville, MA 02655.

Norma L. Crosby, 69

Hyannis - Norma Louise (Carlander) Crosby, 69, a resident of Hyannis, died May 22, 2000.

Born and educated in Yarmouth, Mrs. Crosby graduated from Yarmouth High School. She received secretarial training and worked for a number of firms before starting her own secretarial business.

Mrs. Crosby was active in the Campfire Girls Council and led groups for her own children. She was actively involved in and wrote the newsletter for New Beginnings, a support group for people who had lost their partners in Barnstable. She was also active in the Barnstable Council on Aging Senior Center.

She loved music and enjoyed singing, cooking and creating celebrations for friends and family.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra L. Crosby of Glen Oaks, N.Y., and Laureen M. Crosby of Burlington, Vt.; a sister, Beverly Crowell of Centerville; a stepbrother, Donald Robinson of Branford, Conn.; and an aunt, Eleanor Williams of Yarmouth.

Orazio 'Ray' Cullotta, 78

Bellingham - Orazio "Ray" Cullotta, 78, a former resident of Centerville, died May 22, 2000, at the Milford Whitinsville Hospital in Milford.

He was the husband of Lena "Pappy" (Papagno) Cullotta for 55 years.

Born in Framingham, Mr. Cullotta was a graduate of Framingham High School and the Hall Barber School in Boston. He was a recent resident of Bellingham and formerly of Centerville for the past 15 years.

Mr. Cullotta owned and operated Ray's Barber Shop in South Natick for 35 years. For many years, he was the part-owner of Sports III in Framingham and had also established Cullotta Painting Co. on the Cape.

A member of Sacred Heart Church in South Natick, he was a founder and past president of the South Natick Betterment Association and was instrumental in establishing several youth organizations as well as being active in civic and sporting activities throughout the community.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Nancy Collins of Hopedale; a son, Paul Cullotta of Sandwich; two brothers, Alfred Collotta of Southboro and Anthony Collotta of Framingham; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701; or to the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts Inc., 105 Eastern Ave., Suite 211, Dedham, MA 02027.

John F. Feeney, 59

East Falmouth - John F. Feeney, 59, of East Falmouth, died May 27, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Feeney was born in Boston. He received a master's degree from Cambridge College. He lived in Wellesley until moving to Falmouth in 1977.

Mr. Feeney was director of treatment at the Barnstable County House of Correction for the past 10 years. He was the former director of the Stephen Miller House in Falmouth. He was an avid sports fan.

Surviving are two nephews, Gregory W. Wesson of Sagamore Beach and Christopher R. Wesson of Buzzards Bay; three grandnieces; and close friend Marcia L. Jones of Sagamore Beach.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Terho A. Kaski, 88

Hyannis - Terho A. Kaski, 88, a longtime Cape resident, died May 19, 2000, at his home after a period of failing health.

He was the husband of Kirsti (Ojala) Kaski.

Born in South Carver, Mr. Kaski built his home in Hyannis and lived there since the early '60s. He served in World War II, but received an honorable discharge to take care of the family cranberry business after his father's death. Eventually, cranberries became his livelihood.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of West Barnstable and the Finnish-American Society of Cape Cod.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Andrew Kaski of Hyannis; a sister, O'Sally Merritt of Wareham; three grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elisabeth Jean LeGrand, 50

Marstons Mills - Elisabeth Jean (Clowery) LeGrand, 50, of Marstons Mills, died May 20, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Lawrence LeGrand.

A lifelong resident of Barnstable, Mrs. LeGrand graduated in 1968 from Barnstable High School.

Mrs. LeGrand worked for ComElectric Co. for 26 years until retiring in 1999. She enjoyed gardening and New Hampshire vacations.

Surviving besides her husband are her parents, Bryce and Jean Clowery of Barnstable; two sons, Jason Vermette and Lawrence LeGrand III, both of Marstons Mills; a brother, Bryce Clowery of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Cheryl Lombardi of Barnstable and Joy Tuepker of Centerville; one grandchild; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close friends.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable.

Charles R. Koehler, 86

Hyannis - Charles Russell Koehler, 86, a veteran Cape Cod newspaperman and writer, died May 20, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital of pneumonia.

He was the husband of Margaret Mead (Hudson) Koehler.

Mr. Koehler was born in Gloucester and grew up in Atlantic Highlands, N.J. His family later moved to the Washington , D.C., area where Mr. Koehler attended American University and began a long career in journalism as a Linotype operator for the Washington Times-Herald.

During World War II, Mr. Koehler joined the Army and trained as a paratrooper, but a leg fracture prevented him going overseas.

After the war, Mr. Koehler became real estate editor for the Washington Times-Herald and was a technical editor for the National Academy of Sciences.

In 1961, Mr. Koehler moved to Orleans, where he lived for 39 years. He freelanced in public relations.

He was a former member of the Orleans Rotary Club and Orleans Yacht Club. He also served on the board of trustees at Snow Library and on the Orleans Board of Appeals.

In 1968, he joined the editorial staff of the Cape Cod Times (then the Cape Cod Standard Times), covering Mid- and Lower Cape news and the Second District Court of Barnstable until his retirement in the early 1980s.

Mr. Koehler's many interests included photography, gardening fishing, bird watching, coin and stamp collecting, board games, antiques, roses, astronomy and magic.

He was a dedicated Red Sox fan, Civil War buff and avid reader. He traveled extensively in the United States and Europe.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Stephen Koehler of Orleans and Richard Koehler of Martha's Vineyard; a brother, John Gordon Koehler of Grass Lake, Mich.; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lucille Loosli, 87

Centerville - Lucille (Charbonneau) Loosli, 87, a Cape resident since 1993, died May 23, 2000, at the Bourne Manor Extended Care Facility after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Jules Loosli.

Born in Canada, Mrs. Loosli grew up in LaSallette, Canada, and Canton, N.Y. She lived in Ilion, N.Y., Elmira, N.Y., and Cooperstown, N.Y., before moving to Lakewood, N.J., and then to Centerville in 1993.

Mrs. Loosli was the owner and operator of Loosli's Otsego Lake Motel in Cooperstown, N.Y., and a successful businesswoman.

While living in Cooperstown, N.Y., she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are a daughter, Lesli Loosli of Centerville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
