Roselina S. Souza, 86

Hyannis - Roselina S. Souza, 86, died June 2, 2000, at her home following a sudden illness.

Mrs. Souza was born and raised in New Bedford. She moved to New York City in the late 1930s and in the 1950s to Los Angeles, where she worked for Leach Aircraft Company. She retired in 1975 after 19 years of service, and moved to Hyannis.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed walking to Hyannis Harbor to observe the shipping activity and the ocean.

Surviving are a daughter, Geraldina Medeiros of Hyannis, three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

James B. Turner, 82

Mobile, Ala. - James B. Turner, 82, a resident of Centerville from 1980 to 1997, died May 10, 2000, in Mobile.

He was the husband of Dorothy Turner.

Mr. Turner was a decorated veteran of World War II, where he was a navigator in the European Theater. He was shot down over Germany and became a POW.

He was educated at Fordham University and received a master's degree in business administration from New York University, after which he pursued a long career in health care and marketing.

After he retired to Cape Cod from Wellesley, he pursued with his usual vigor his lifelong passions of tennis and bridge. He was a member of the Osterville Men's Club and Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville, and on the board of directors for the Cape Cod Red Cross.

He recently began a second retirement in Mobile to be close to his daughter Susan and her husband, Roy Mosley of West Mobile.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Susan Turner-Mosley of Mobile and Margaret M. Turner of Newton, Mass.; two sisters, Mary Grannis of New Jersey and Margaret A. Turner of Staten Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Carolyn 'Cally' Welton, 80

St. Petersburg, Fla. - Carolyn "Cally" (Weston) Welton, 80, who leaves family on the Cape, died May 27, 2000, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Born and raised in Waltham, Mass., Mrs. Welton was a winter resident of St. Petersburg until moving there permanently in 1970. She was also a frequent summer visitor of the Cape, living full time from 1974 to 1977 in Cotuit.

She attended Middlesex University and worked at the Waltham Watch Factory during World War II.

An oil painter, she was an award-winning artist and also a classical pianist.

Mrs. Welton was a lifetime member of the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Waltham and attended the Cathedral of St. Peter in St. Petersburg. She was also a Rainbow Girl and a member of the Eastern Star.

In 1961, she established the first letter writing campaign to world leaders to establish an international peace day. She enjoyed golfing, traveling, cooking and fine dining.

Surviving are a daughter, Betsey Welton Silva of Sandwich; four granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

She was also the mother of Sandra Weston Rahn, who died in 1998.

Dorothy Wiinikainen, 79

Hyannis ­ Dorothy (Walker) Wiinikainen, 79, of Hyannis, died Saturday.

She was the wife of the late Albert R. Wiinikainen.

Mrs. Wiinikainen was born and raised in Harwich. She graduated from Harwich High School. She and her husband moved to Hyannis in 1952 to raise their family.

Mrs. Wiinikainen worked for Acme Cleaners in West Yarmouth and Chatham for more than 40 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 2578. She loved to spend time with her grandson, loved to cook, and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Surviving are two sons, John Wiinikainen of Hyannis and Dale Leary of Dennis; and a grandson, Patrick Leary of Dennis.

Margaret C. Wyatt, 84

Osterville - Margaret (Clowe) "Nanny" Wyatt, a resident of Osterville, died May 27, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

Mrs. Wyatt had been a resident of Osterville since 1980, when she retired to the Cape from Macy's in Schenectady, N.Y.

During her retirement she was active in the Friends of the Osterville Library, where she served as president. Mrs. Wyatt also volunteered at Cape Cod Hospital. Some of her favorite activities included travel (especially to Martha's Vineyard), reading cookbooks, gardening, eating out, knitting, and laughing.

The former Mrs. Wyatt's Tea Room in Osterville was named after her.

Family and friends will remember Mrs. Wyatt's flowered hat and huge smile.

Surviving are two daughters, Sarah and Wendy; a son, Tim Johnson of Osterville; a sister, Carolyn Griffith of Osterville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Victoria Bell, 76

Hyannis - Victoria Bell, 76, longtime advocate for the poor and homeless, died June 8, 2000, at the Greenery Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center in Hyannis

She was the wife of the late Noah Bell Sr.

Mrs. Bell was born in Allport, Ark. She came to Cape Cod in 1962, the recipient of a one-way bus ticket for her and her 11 children from white segregationists in the South.

Mrs. Bell worked for many years as a presser at Bassett Lane Cleaners. She worked with the Community Action Committee as an advocate. In her later years, she served the elderly as a nurse. She loved to cook.

She was a communicant of the Faith Assemblies of God Church in Hyannis, and continued serving in the community.

Surviving are five sons, Noah of Osterville, Walter and Perry of Hyannis, Leroy Baucom and Ricky Bell of California; seven daughters, Dorris Bell, Peggy Ferguson and Debrahann Sweeting of Hyannis, Nellie Sampson and Rosemary Bell of California, Vicki Bell of Virginia and Betty Hayes of Milwaukee; three brothers, Willie, Theodus and Melvin Alexander of St. Louis, Mo.; five sisters, Easter Ford and Mabel Horton, both of Little Rock, Ark., and Peggy Lewis, Margaret Harold, and Erma Jean Moore of St. Louis, Mo.; 35 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Anthony Bell.

Memorial donations may be made to the Housing Assistance Corp. or Barnstable Housing Authority, Hyannis.

Richard D. 'Dick' Bigos

Barnstable ­ Richard D. "Dick" Bigos, a well-known community organizer and political activist, died June 8, 2000, at his home in West Barnstable following a brief illness. He was 52.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Stella and Walter Bigos, and the brother of the late Walter Bigos, Jr.

He graduated from Coyle High School in Fall River and later attended seminary school. He graduated from Southeastern Massachusetts University (UMass-Dartmouth) in 1970.

He worked as a reporter for the New Bedford Standard-Times before moving to the Cape. He joined the Community Action Committee of Cape Cod and the Islands Inc. in Hyannis in 1972 as editor of the agency's newsletter, The Grapevine. He became director of the agency in 1980, a post he held until his death.

Through the committee, he helped to create many community advocacy programs and groups, including the Cape Organization for the Rights of the Disabled, the Hospital Workers Local 767, Cape United Elderly, Safe Harbor and the Child Care Network.

Mr. Bigos campaigned nationally in 1988 for the Michael Dukakis presidential bid. He was a key worker and adviser in many federal, state and local races, backing Democrats and Republicans, over the past 25 years.

He is survived by his son, Daniel M. Bigos of Plymouth; a sister, Janice Estes of Mattapoisett; a niece and two nephews; several cousins; and his former wife, Kellie Bigos.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial will be private.

Edmond Camara, 70

Centerville - Edmond Camara, 70, a retired sales manager, died June 5, 2000, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care - Pavilion in Hyannis after a long illness.

He was the husband of Ann Marie (Vaccarella) Camara and the late Barbara (Desrosiers) Camara.

Born in Fall River, Mr. Camara was a 1947 graduate of Durfee High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1948, serving in the Army and in the Reserves until 1957.

Mr. Camara began a long career in the snack food industry in Fall River at Made Rite Potato Chips. From 1964 to 1973, he lived in Newington, Conn., where he worked as a distributor for Frito Lay Inc. He enjoyed a long affiliation with Frito Lay Inc., serving in various capacities, including as the regional sales manager for Manhattan and the Bronx, N.Y.

Ten years prior to his retirement, he joined Millbrook Distributors on the Cape as the retail manager for all the Cape and islands.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Beverly Robinson of Merrimack, N.H., Pamela Sischo and Valerie Zapor, both of Newington, Conn.; two sons, Stephen L. Camara of Vienna, Va., and Edmond J. Camara of Newington, Conn.; two brothers, Antone and John Camara, both of Fall River; a sister, Clotilde Costa of Berkley; four grandsons; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Carole A. 'Cuddy' Casey, 64

Sandwich - Carole Ann "Cuddy" Casey, 64, a resident of East Sandwich, died June 5, 2000, at her home.

Born in Boston, she was raised in Milton, where she graduated from Milton High School in 1953. She lived in Stoughton before moving to Sandwich in 1978.

A bookkeeper, she worked for 15 years at Phillips Manufacturing in Canton before moving to the Cape. She then worked at the Wright Co. in Osterville for 15 years until retiring in 1997.

She was a volunteer at Corpus Christi Parish and enjoyed playing Cribbage with the Cribbage League in Sandwich. She was also a bird enthusiast, an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and sports, especially the Red Sox.

Surviving are a brother, Peter E. Flaherty of Cohasset; a sister, Barbara J. Geoghegan of East Sandwich; three nieces and two nephews; and two grandnieces and two grandnephews.

William F. DeOliveira, 46

Hyannis - William F. DeOliveira, 46, a Cape resident since 1985, died June 4, 2000, at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a long illness.

He was the husband of Maria (Dumont) DeOliveira.

Mr. DeOliveira was born, raised and educated in Brazil, and came to the Hyannis area in 1985.

He worked for The 99 Restaurant in South Yarmouth.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, William Bhruno DeOliveira of Hyannis; two daughters, Williana DeOliveira and Juliana DeOliveira, both of Hyannis; two brothers, Lindomar and Heliday DeOliveira, both of Brazil; three sisters, Lindaura DeAraujo and Maria Neide DeOliveira, both of Brazil, and Ilma DeOliveira of Hyannis; and many nieces and nephews.
