Dana G. Galvin, Jr., 21

Hyannis - Dana Gordon Galvin, Jr., 21, of Hyannis, died unexpectedly June 4, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

Mr. Galvin attended Cape Cod Technical High School in Harwich. He studied auto body repairs and excelled at it. He worked at Tracy Volkswagen in Hyannis as an auto detailer.

Mr. Galvin enjoyed being a father to his daughter Alexyss. His hobbies included basketball, cars, motorcycles, playing pool, music and singing.

He is survived by his mother, Adeline Galvin of Hyannis; his father, Dana Galvin of Hyannis; a daughter, Alexyss Lynn Galvin of Hyannis; two sisters, Shonta and Fabrina Galvin, both of Hyannis; his girlfriend, Nerissa L. Andrews of Hyannis; his paternal grandmother, Mabel Galvin of Hyannis; his maternal grandparents, Regina and Thomas Ewing of Centerville; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth Mills Hall, 91

Falmouth - Ruth Mills Hall, 91, of Falmouth, died June 4, 2000, at her home. She was the wife of Arthur Bassett Hall, who died in 1969.

Mrs. Hall was born in Brookline. She graduated from Simmons College in Boston and did graduate work in elementary education at Rutgers University. She taught at the Cotuit Elementary School for many years, retiring in 1977.

Mrs. Hall was an active volunteer with the Red Cross and one of the original founders of the YWCA of New Jersey. She was a longtime member of the Old Stone Dock.

Surviving are a daughter, Janice H. Hess of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Robert Gifford Hall of Falmouth and St. Petersburg; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon June 17 in the First Congregational Church on the Village Green, Falmouth.

G. Howard Hill, 86

Hyannis - G. Howard Hill, 86, a resident of Hyannis, died May 27, 2000, in Hyannis.

Born in Springfield, Mr. Hill was raised in Holyoke, where he graduated from Holyoke High School in 1934. He was drafted into the Army in March of 1941 and served in the Philippines during World War II.

After 30 years at Uniroyal, he retired in 1975.

Mr. Hill spent 45 years in the Masonic family. He was a past master, a district deputy 3rd Masonic District, and a member of the Springfield Consistory No. 89, T. Thomas Chapter, Royal Arch, Suez Temple of Shriners No. 114 of Springfield.

He also volunteered in the SHARE program in Hyannis, where he lived for the past 20 years.

Surviving are four sons, Robert M. Hill and Frank H. Hill, both of Holyoke, Harry D. Hill of Ludlow and John D. Hill of Williamsburg; a brother, Frank D. Hill of Holyoke; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife and best friend, Clara Lipscomb of Dennisport.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sumner Lodge No. 5, 257 Tyler St., Springfield, MA 01109; or to a charity of one's choice.

Edna May Lattimer, 82

Hyannis - Edna May Lattimer, 82, a Cape resident since 1960, died May 24, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late George Lattimer.

Born in New York, Mrs. Lattimer grew up in Camden, N.J. and Syracuse, N.Y.

Mrs. Lattimer lived in Hyannis where she operated an antiques business. In 1969 she became Cape Cod's original matchmaker, bringing people together up until nearly the time of her death.

Surviving are a daughter, Avis Maisie Lattimer of Hyannis; a son, Richard Mcharen Lattimer of Mooresville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and many close and dear friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

A. Edgar Mattson Jr., 51

Hyannisport - A. Edgar Mattson Jr., 51, a former Cape resident, died June 7, 2000, at his sister's home in Hyannisport.

Born in Providence, R.I., Mr. Mattson was a graduate of Moses Brown School and Temple University. He was a resident of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and previously lived in Warwick, R.I., and on the Cape.

A builder and designer, he owned and operated A.E. Mattson and Associates in South Carolina.

He had a lifelong interest in boats and boating.

Surviving are two sisters, Cynthia A. Jacobson of Warwick, R.I., and Janice M. Presbrey of Hyannisport; six nieces and nephews; and a grandniece.

Lucy W. Messer, 92

Barnstable - Lucy Williams Messer, 92, a longtime resident of Barnstable, died June 1, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

Born in Newark, N.J., Mrs. Messer was raised in East Orange, N.J. She was a 1924 graduate of East Orange High School and also graduated from Montclair Normal School in Montclair, N.J.

After graduation, she taught third grade at Bradford School in Upper Montclair, N.J., from 1928 until her marriage to Robert Gillespie Messer in 1932.

Mrs. Messer raised her family and then resumed her career in education. She was on the staff of Garland Junior College in Boston and later Bradford College in Haverhill. She delighted in the fact that she had both started and ended her career at "Bradford."

An avid gardener, needlepointer and reader, she also had a lifelong love of classical music.

Mrs. Messer was an active member of the Friends of Sturgis Library, Dig and Dell Garden Club, Friends of Cape Cod Symphony and St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable.

Surviving are two sons, Alan Williams Messer of West Paterson, N.J., and David Gillespie Messer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Susan Messer Abuza of Stonington, Conn., and Judith Messer Slade of Dennis; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 19 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Main Street (Route 6A), Barnstable.

Robert C. Rankin, 79

Osterville - Robert Crocker Rankin, 79, a lifelong resident of Osterville, died June 4, 2000, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Pavilion in Hyannis after a brief illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Osterville, Mr. Rankin was the first baby admitted to Cape Cod Hospital in 1920. He attended Barnstable schools.

He was a direct descendant of Deacon William Crocker, one of the earliest settlers of the town of Barnstable.

During World War II, he served in the Army with the 81st Chemical Division and was station in Marfa, Texas , and in Florida and Virginia.

After his discharge, he returned to Osterville and from that time seldom left his native village.

Mr. Rankin worked for many years at Tallman Brothers and later Daniel Brothers, assisting in masonry. He enjoyed building model airplanes as a hobby.

He is survived by a niece, Audrey Killion, and two grandnephews, Luke and Matthew Killion, all of Winchester; a cousin, Alcott N. Hallett Jr. of Osterville; and a caregiver, his second cousin, Paul Chesbro of Osterville.

Barbara M. Schmitt, 97

South Yarmouth - Barbara Marden Schmitt, 97, of South Yarmouth and formerly of Osterville, died June 6, 2000, at Cape Heritage Nursing Home in Sandwich.

She was the wife of Charles Schmitt, who died in 1995.

Mrs. Schmitt was born in Stoughton. She married in 1923 and lived in Braintree until 1945, when she and her husband moved to Scarsdale, N.Y. They moved to Osterville in 1976 and to Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth in 1988.

Mrs. Schmitt was a member of the Women's Club of Scarsdale. In Braintree, she was active in All Souls Church. While living in Osterville, she was treasurer of Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary and a member of South Congregational Church in Centerville.

Surviving are two sons, Robert G. Schmitt of Camillus, N.Y., and C. Richard Schmitt of West Barnstable; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late Carolyn McCarron.

Philip C. Stearns, 44

Boston - Philip C. Stearns, 44, a former resident of Hyannis, died June 7, 2000, in Boston.

Born in Worcester, Mr. Stearns lived in Hopedale before moving to the Cape. He was a graduate of Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational School in Upton.

He is survived by his mother, Leola Stearns of Venice, Fla.; a sister, Carlotta McIntyre of Charlottesville, Va.; and a brother, Robert of Hartland, Wis.

Alice G. Stiles, 90

Hyannis - Alice G. (Askew) Stiles, 90, a longtime resident of Hyannis, died June 4, 2000, at the Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chatham.

She was the wife of Paul W. Stiles, who died in 1980.

Born, raised and educated in Fall River, Mrs. Stiles was a graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River. She married in 1933 and settled in New Bedford for a short time before moving to Hyannis in 1941.

Mrs. Stiles was an active volunteer in many community organizations including the Cape Chorus, Hyannis Women's Club, Rainbow and De Molay Mother's Club and the American Red Cross.

She was a 50-year member of the Federated Church of Hyannis.

Surviving are a son, Curtis H. Stiles of Orleans; a daughter, Nancy Stiles Woodworth of Dennis; a sister, Ellen Allen of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Harriet S. Thayer, 97

South Yarmouth - Harriet S. (Small) Thayer, 97, who leaves a daughter in Yarmouth, died unexpectedly June 2, 2000, at the Mayflower Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in South Yarmouth.

She was the wife of the late Winslow B. Thayer. They had been married for 25 years.

Born in Norwood, Mrs. Thayer was a 1921 graduate of the Chandler School of Business for Women in Boston. She worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Hartford, Conn.

Mrs. Thayer married in 1926 and settled in Rockville, Conn., where she was very active in the Rockville Methodist Church. After moving to the Cape, she settled in Centerville.

An avid gardener, she was interested in her family's past and spent many hours researching their past.

Surviving are a son, Robert S. Thayer of Pittsfield; a daughter, Nancy C. Thayer of Yarmouth; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
