Dr. Stanislaw Freeman, 54

Wellesley - Dr. Stanislaw Freeman, 54, of Wellesley and Cape Cod, died June 29, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center of Boston in Jamaica Plain.

He was the husband of Julie Freeman.

Dr. Freeman graduated from Gloversville High School as valedictorian in 1964. He received a degree in government, graduating magna cum laude, in 1968 from Harvard College.

He completed his medical education at Johns Hopkins University in 1972 and returned to Boston to an internship at Mount Auburn Hospital and a residency at Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He subsequently practiced psychiatry in Cambridge, Dorchester, Wellesley, Bedford, Brockton, Framingham and Cape Cod.

Dr. Freeman served as a major in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., from 1976 to 1978. He loved sailing, skiing, waltzing and chess and was an Eagle Scout in the Polish Scouting Organization.

In 1971 he won first prize in the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation International Writing Competition.

Surviving besides his wife are his parents, Stephen T. Freeman and Irena A. Dyrcz-Freeman of Gloversville, N.Y.; a daughter, Ashley of Wellesley; a step-daughter, Lindsay of Wellesley; two sisters, Dobrochna Fire of Highlands, N.J., and Zywra Wojnar of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and a niece and several nephews.

A memorial service is being planned for later this year.

Milton F. Gifford, 72

Dennis - Milton F. Gifford, 72, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant, died June 25, 2000, at the Greenery Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Hyannis after a long illness.

Born in New Bedford, Mr. Gifford was raised in Cotuit and educated in Barnstable schools. He moved to Dennis in 1999 from Evansville, Ind.

After high school, Mr. Gifford enlisted in the Air Force, where he served in the engineering division as well as other divisions, as a mechanical superintendent and inspector. He retired at the rank of chief master sergeant from the Wright-Paterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, in 1969 after 23 years of service.

Mr. Gifford received many commendations including, six bronze oak leaf clusters, National Defense Medal with gold star, Silver Titan Missile Award and the Good Conduct Medal.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending his retirement with family.

Surviving are a sister, Roxanne Gifford Sears of Dennis; three nieces; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Kenneth Jansson, 59

Cummaquid - Kenneth Jansson, 59, a longtime Cummaquid resident, died June 28, 2000, at Hospice House in Barnstable after a long illness.

He was the husband of Avis Jansson.

Mr. Jansson was born in Fitchburg and attended the School of Practical Art in Boston. He was a member of the Army National Guard for six years.

Mr. Jansson was an art director in Providence, R.I., prior to moving to Cape Cod in 1969.

He was the owner of the Jansson Art Gallery in Cummaquid for 27 years. A versatile artist, he did oil paintings, embossings and collographs of Cape Cod scenes. His works are in numerous private collections.

Mr. Jansson was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving besides his wife are his parents, Helen and Alfred Jansson of South Yarmouth; two daughters, Erica Meister of Centerville and Kara Kovacev of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Barry Jansson of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Carol Hay of Lincroft, N.J.; and a grandson.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice House in Yarmouthport.

Manuel A. Jasus III, 76

Marstons Mills - Manuel A. Jasus III, 76, of Marstons Mills, died unexpectedly June 27, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Ruth T. (Johnson) Jasus.

Mr. Jasus was born, raised and educated in East Boston. He graduated from East Boston High School in 1941.

He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving from 1941 to 1945. After the war he was employed as a shipper for the former Mickey Finn in East Boston. He also worked for United Parcel Service in Watertown, and then at Logan Airport in the overnight air shipping department. He retired as a supervisor in 1986. He and his wife moved from East Boston to Marstons Mills in 1999.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Manuel A. Jasus IV of Derry, N.H.; a daughter, Ruth L. LaCava of Plymouth, Mass.; a sister, Florence Chase of Plymouth, N.H.; and four grandchildren.

Cosmo J. Montagna, 85

Sandwich - Cosmo J. Montagna, 85, founder and owner of the Victory Fish Co. since 1936, died June 21, 2000, at his home in Sandwich.

He was the husband of Mary (Karras) Montagna.

Mr. Montagna was born in New Haven, Conn., and graduated from Hamden High School. He had been a resident of Cape Cod since 1941.

Mr. Montagna pioneered the mussel industry out of Barnstable Harbor and had fish traps located in the bay outside Sandy Neck. He bought and sold wholesale fish from the local fishermen and distributed them to major cities on the East Coast. Beginning in 1963 he operated the Marlin Restaurant with his wife and children.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Alphonse Montagna of Plymouth; two daughters, Carmel Swider of West Yarmouth and Alice Fardy of Centerville; a brother, Nicholas Montagna of Hamden, Conn.; three sisters, Anna DiVivo and Lena McGarthy of Hamden, Conn., and Alice Larrivee of New Haven, Conn.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on July 15 at the Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Road (Route 28), Hyannis.

David R. Nickerson, 42

Mashpee - David Roy Nickerson, 42, a mover, died June 24, 2000, at The Greenery at Hyannis.

Born in Boston, Mr. Nickerson was a 1978 graduate of Upper Cape Regional Technical School. He was raised in East Falmouth and lived in Hyannis for many years before moving to Mashpee.

Mr. Nickerson was involved in the cross country moving business and had worked for Allied Van Lines until he was forced to retire because of illness.

He is survived by his father, Edward B. Nickerson of Falmouth; his mother, Geraldine (Galer) Nickerson of Falmouth; a sister, Margaret S. "Peggy" Nickerson of Falmouth; two brothers, Mark S. Nickerson of Forestdale and Michael M. Nickerson of Mashpee; and three nephews and four nieces.

Ruth E. Oehme, 91

Hyannisport - Ruth Evelyn (Payette) Oehme, 91, a Hyannisport resident, died July 1, 2000, at Cape Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Centerville after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Willy Oehme for 67 years.

Mrs. Oehme was born and educated in Dedham. She was a longtime resident of Hyannisport. Both she and her husband were avid gymnasts and won many awards and citations.

Mrs. Oehme was a designer and fashioned elegant lampshades for many years. She was a homemaker, and a helpmate to her husband.

Surviving are a son, Wayne Oehme of Mashpee; a daughter, Marlene White of West Barnstable; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Alice Pratt, 95

Centerville - Alice Pratt, 95, who leaves family on the Cape, died June 29, 2000, at Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.

Born in Fall River, Miss Pratt was a longtime Fall River resident before moving to Centerville.

Miss Pratt was an inspector for the former Firestone Rubber and Latex Co. for many years before retiring in 1967. She was a former member of Blessed Sacrament Church, a former choir member and a member of the Children of Mary Society.

Surviving are a niece, Diane J. Dupont of Centerville; and several nephews.

Ronalda L. 'Ronnie' Roy, 98

South Yarmouth - Ronalda Leah "Ronnie" Roy, 98, a resident of Mayflower Place, died June 25, 2000, at a local nursing home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Eugene A. Roy, who died in 1972.

Born in Fall River, Mrs. Roy lived in Hyannis since 1950 before moving to Mayflower Place in 1994.

Mrs. Roy enjoyed reading, bingo, painting in years past and her cat and dog. On the Cape, she also enjoyed the weather, environment, rides and the ocean and beaches.

Many of her paintings were seascapes. She had never gone "off Cape" since her husband's death in 1972.

She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis, and Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville.

Surviving are a brother, Ronald Levesque of California; a sister, Rita Pepin of East Hartford, Conn.; a nephew/godson; another nephew; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Dante Sartorio, 84

South Dennis - Dante Sartorio, 84, died June 23, 2000, after a short illness.

He was the husband of Fannie Sartorio for 63 years.

Mr. Sartorio was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. He owned "Dante's," a restaurant there which was the watering hole for many of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the late 1950s.

Following a bout with cancer in 1976, he moved to the Cape where he helped his daughter and son-in-law run their restaurant, The Paddock.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Maxine Zartarian of Brewster, Beverly Wood of Pittsburgh and Jeanne Herrick of Carlsbad, Calif.; two sisters, Enis Reardon and Mary Marasti, both of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Walter B. Starr, 94

Hyannis - Walter B. Starr, 94, a Cape resident since 1973, died June 22, 2000, after a brief stay at Brewster Manor.

He was the husband of Louise (Slattery) Starr for 55 years.

Born in Warren, Mr. Starr was raised in Clinton. He was a heavy-equipment operator involved in highway and airport construction, specializing in grader operation through most of his career. Among the more notable projects in which he was involved were the building of the dam at Quabin Reservoir and construction of the Alkan Highway, which ran from British Columbia to Fairbanks, Alaska.

Shortly after retirement, he moved to Hyannis in 1973. As an avid rock collector, he spent many hours walking the shores of Sandy Neck fulfilling his lifelong hobby.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Walter B. Starr of Clinton, Ron S. Starr of Hyannis and Michael T. Starr of Shrewsbury; a daughter, Cynthia A. Grenier of Centerville; a brother, Peter J. Starr of Fitchburg; and five grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
