Frank A. Oppel, 61

South Yarmouth - Frank A. Oppel, 61, a social studies teacher and retired master sergeant, died suddenly July 2, 2000, at his home in Bass River.

Born in Newark, N.J., he spent his summers on the Cape, and at age 15 signed up with the Cole Brothers Circus and traveled around the country.

Mr. Oppel enlisted in the Army and became a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in Germany.

In the mid-1960s he worked for Air America in Southeast Asia, and shortly afterward re-enlisted with Special Forces as a Ranger.

He received a commendation for combat parachute jump and a Bronze Star.

While serving in Vietnam, he worked towards a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and later earned a master's degree from the University of Southern California.

He began his teaching career in the Barnstable school system. He later went to work for the Department of Defense, teaching social studies in Guam, where he taught until his death.

He was a member of the Air America and Special Forces retirement organizations, the American Federation of Teachers and the American Legion.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine G. Oppel and Jeanne N. Oppel, both of Ayer; a sister, Jeanne Bohlen Oppel of Chatham, N.J., and Bass River; and a brother, Richard E. Oppel of Portsmouth, R.I.

Robert M. Smith, 70

Hyannis - Robert M. Smith, 70, of Hyannis, died July 2, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.

He was the husband of Anneva L. (Donahue) Smith.

Mr. Smith was born and raised in Philadelphia.

He served in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean War. He was a resident of Hyannis since 1987.

Mr. Smith was very active in the Hyannis Veterans of Foreign Wars Dennis Thomas Post 2578. He was a trustee of the VFW from 1992 to 1995. He loved carpentry.

Besides his wife, he is survived by nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 20 at the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis.

C. Marion Stansifer, 85

Hyannis - C. Marion (Ellis Stansifer, 85, a native Cape Codder, died July 7, 2000, at her son's home in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Charles "Stan" Stansifer, who died in 1980.

Mrs. Stansifer graduated from Barnstable High School in 1932. She worked for a brief time for Drantez Clothing of Hyannis and was active in the PTA and in Red Cross activities on the Cape for many years.

She is survived by a son, Robert M. Stansifer of Hyannis; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Elaine M. Stewart, 74

Centerville - Elaine M. (Payne) Stewart, 74, a homemaker, died July 5, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion.

She was the wife of Robert E. Stewart for 54 years.

Mrs. Stewart was born in South Boston. She was a resident of Centerville for the past 12 years and previously lived in Norwood.

Mrs. Steward was a homemaker. She was also an avid golf fan and a former Sunshine Lady for the Women's Golf League of Holly Ridge Golf Course.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Robert E. Stewart Jr. of Belchertown and James Auger Stewart of Los Angeles; six daughters, Kathleen Schiavo of Hyannis, Ginger McDonald of Centerville, Elizabeth Ross of Rindge, N.H., Cynthia Stewart of Leominster, Bonnie McSpiritt of Londonderry, N.H., and Susan Stewart of France; two brothers, Jack Payne of Norwood and Nick Payne of Dedham; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jean J. Viola, 90

Centerville - Jean J. (Saccheti) Viola, 90, a resident of Centerville, died Friday at Cape Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.

She was the wife of the late Joseph A. Viola, Sr.

Mrs. Viola was born in Boston. At an early age, she moved to Hull, where she finished her education. She moved to Hyannis in the 1970s.

She worked in the cafeteria department of the Hull school system. She and her husband owned an Italian restaurant called Vic's in Hull. Mrs. Viola was a communicant of St. Mary's Parish.

She loved gardening, cooking, going out to high tea and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Arthur V. Viola of Cummaquid, John F. Viola of Hyannisport and Victor J. Viola of Centerville; two brothers, Juaco Riccardi of Framingham and James Riccardi of Watertown; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late Joseph A. Viola.

Juliet 'Judy' Boudreau, 68,

Osterville ­ Juliet "Judy" Newcomer Boudreau, 68, a resident of Osterville, died of leukemia July 15, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Philip M. Boudreau.

Mrs. Boudreau was born in Hagerstown, Md., and educated at West Virginia University at the School of Music. She received a master's degree in pipe organ from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Mrs. Boudreau was a longtime member and officer of Our Lady of the Assumption Ladies Guild and its Altar Guild. She was an organist at the church for 35 years, director of the adult choir and founder and director of the children's choir. She was a recipient of the Marian Award from the Diocese of Fall River for her service to the church.

Mrs. Boudreau was an active member of the Osterville Garden Club and a past member of the Junior Women's Club. She loved her gardens and enjoyed flower arranging, and she volunteered her gift of music and flower designing at area nursing homes. She was an accomplished cook and founded the Hot Fudge Sundae Club.

Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Philip Michael Boudreau and Mark H. Boudreau, both of Centerville, and Robert P. Boudreau of Roselle Park, N.J.; a daughter, Anne M. Boudreau of Mashpee; a brother, Robert B. Newcomer of Williamsville, N.Y.; five grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew.

Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Assumption Ladies Guild.

Robert L. Hawkins, 85

Pepperell - Robert L. Hawkins, 85, a former Cape resident, died June 30, 2000.

He was the husband of the late Laura E. Hawkins. They had been married for 61 years.

Born in Antrim, N.H., Mr. Hawkins lived in Arlington for many years and retired to Barnstable. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his daughter in Pepperell.

His career at Harvard University spanned for 45 years, primarily in the Computer Laboratory.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Robert Olson of Pepperell; a sister, Frances Beote of Union, Maine; a granddaughter; four grandsons; and four great-grandsons.

Joseph D. Kenney, 75

West Barnstable ­ Joseph D. Kenney, 75, a resident of West Barnstable, died July 16, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.

He was the husband of the late Anne (Cook) Kenney.

Mr. Kenney was born, raised and educated in Brookline. He was in the Army during World War II, serving in Okinawa. After the war, he attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and was an alumnus of Tufts University. After graduation, Mr. Kenney taught at North Attleboro High School. He also worked as a designer for Howard Johnson's and the Sheraton Corp.

In 1969, Mr. Kenney moved to West Barnstable and taught in the Dennis-Yarmouth school system and at Barnstable Middle School, retiring in the 1980s. He also ran an interior design business.

Surviving are two sons, Michael J. Kenney of West Barnstable and Sean J. Kenney of Mashpee; three daughters, Margaret Peters of Forestdale, Maura Norwood of Georgetown and Julia Goodman of Needham; and seven grandchildren.

Rhea Lupo, 79

South Dennis - Rhea Lupo, 79, a resident of South Dennis, died July 6, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a long illness.

Ms. Lupo was born and educated in New Bedford, where her parents owned Lupo's Restaurant. She first came to the Cape in the 1940s and lived in Provincetown and Hyannis before moving permanently to South Dennis 30 years ago.

During her years on Cape Cod, Ms. Lupo worked as a tour guide, a bookkeeper and a salesperson of fine German wines.

Her interests included cooking and giving dinner parties. She also served on the Board of Opera New England for a number of years and enjoyed seeing and listening to operas, classical music and jazz.

She also enjoyed her Scottish-Fold cat, Scotch.

Ms. Lupo was known to be a gourmet cook and a friend to many well-known jazz musicians.

She is survived by a sister, Clio E. Murphy of Savannah, Ga.; a niece; a nephew; and many cousins.

A private memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Francis D. Maloney, 78

Osterville ­ Francis D. Maloney, 78, a resident of Osterville, died July 10, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Mildred E. (Wood) Maloney and the late Rose M. (Lahan) Maloney. Born in Boston, Mr. Maloney was raised in Revere, where he graduated from Revere High School. He lived in Osterville for the past four years and previously lived in Milton for 45 years.

Mr. Maloney was a supervisor for New England Telephone and Telegraph in Boston for 30 years. He retired in 1985.

A decorated World War II Army veteran, he was a longtime parishioner of St. Agatha Church, Milton, and a former member of the Cunningham Bowling League, Milton.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Francis G. Maloney of Quincy and John F. Maloney of Milton; two daughters, Rosemary A. Stephen of Milton and Kathleen M. Maloney of Weymouth; a sister, Grace DeWolfe of Florida; a brother, Richard W. Maloney of Newburyport; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
