Charles E. Maynard, 76

West Barnstable - Charles E. Maynard, 76, of West Barnstable, died July 20, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a period of failing health.

He was the husband of the late Margareta (Lind) Maynard.

Mr. Maynard was born in Sharon. He graduated from New Bedford High School, F.T. Trummell Officers School in Connecticut and from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. After graduation he lived in Lakeville for 15 years, and resided in West Barnstable since 1975.

For 31 years, Mr. Maynard, who held the rank of lieutenant, worked at the academy as an engineer and a classroom teacher. During his childhood he was involved with the Boy Scouts. He also enjoyed reading.

Surviving are a niece, Pamela Alford of Georgia; and two nephews, William H. French Jr. of Cummaquid and Stephen Maynard of Taunton.

Margaret 'Meg' Morton, 40

Hyannis ­ Margaret "Meg" M. (Wall) Morton, 40, of Hyannis, died July 15, 2000, at her home after an 18-month illness with cancer.

She was the companion of Kelly A. Kirby, with whom she lived.

Born and raised in Pittsfield, she was a 1977 graduate of Pittsfield High School. In 1979, she moved to Falmouth, where she began working with the D'Angelo sandwich shop chain. She later moved to Dennis and then to Hyannis. She managed the shops in the D'Angelo chain in all three towns and in both locations in Hyannis, and was a dedicated worker. She retired six months ago due to illness.

She loved to paint and sketch, and had produced murals for the stores she worked in. She also enjoyed camping.

Besides her companion, she is survived by her father, Leon A. Wall of Pittsfield; three sisters, Jean Ketchum of Pittsfield, Nancy Wall of Hyannis and Karen Snyder of Ridgefield, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Ernest M. Pagnano, 78

Harwich ­ Ernest M. Pagnano, 78, a Cape resident for the past 25 years, died July 9, 2000, in Barnstable.

He was the husband of Margaret (Ventura) Pagnano for 56 years.

Born and raised in Providence, R.I., Mr. Pagnano was educated in Providence and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. After World War II, he attended and graduated from Bryant College in Providence in 1957.

After graduating from high school, he entered the Coast Guard and served from 1942 to 1946. He also served in the Army Reserve from 1950 to 1953.

For the next 22 years, Mr. Pagnano worked for the government in various positions. First at Davisville Naval Air Station, North Kingston, R.I. He then moved to Virginia, where he continued working with the government and after working for five years with General Service Administration, Department of Defense. He retired in 1975.

Upon his retirement from GSA, he moved to the Cape and settled in Harwich. He lived there for the past 25 years until his death. He worked for Snow's Hardware in Orleans and also at Cape Lobster in Hyannis for more than 10 years.

Mr. Pagnano enjoyed reading and playing golf. While in Washington , D.C., he was a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Steven R. Pagnano of Pawtucket, R.I.; a brother, Rudolph Pagnano of North Providence, R.I.; a sister, Teresa Galati of Lawrence, Long Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Ernest A. Pagnano.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. July 24 at the Holy Trinity Church, Main Street, West Harwich. Burial is private.

Marianne G. Spariosu, 58

West Yarmouth ­ Marianne G. (DeMilio) Spariosu, 58, a resident of West Yarmouth, died July 9, 2000, at the Forestview Nursing Home in Wareham after an illness.

Born in Tarrytown, N.Y., Mrs. Spariosu was a longtime resident of West Yarmouth and worked for Woolworth's in Hyannis for many years.

She enjoyed watching television, cooking, growing flowers and going to church.

Survivors include a son, John Spariosu of West Yarmouth; and a brother, John DeMilio of Marstons Mills.

Helen K. Wright, 94

West Hyannisport ­ Helen Kathryn (Kramer) Wright, 94, a year-round Cape resident since 1980, died July 6, 2000, at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville. She was the wife of George P. Wright for 69 years.

Born in Evansville, Ind., Mrs. Wright lived there for more than half of her life. She was a 1924 graduate of Central High School and attended Evansville College, where she received a diploma from the Department of Education in 1926. She was an elementary school teacher for five years in the Evansville public school system.

She married in 1931 and settled in Evansville, where she and her husband raised their family. In 1959, they moved to Framingham.

After her husband's retirement in 1973, they moved to DeBary, Fla. They returned to Massachusetts in 1980 to live year round at their summer home in West Hyannisport.

Mrs. Wright was active in the Women's Fellowship in Bethel United Church of Christ, Evansville, Grace Church of Christ, Framingham and the Federated Church of Hyannis. She was also a member of the Wives Optimist Club in Evansville and the Framingham Garden Club.

At Evansville College, she was a member of the Gamma Epsilon Sigma Society and served as president of its alumnae chapter in 1931. She also played on the college's women's tennis team and won several singles titles.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Beverly Brenner of Somerville; a son, Gordon Wright of North Eastham; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the Fibromyalgia Foundation, 29 Kraft St., Newton, MA 02458.

Virginia C. 'Ginger' Cahoon, 55

Hyannis ­ Virginia C. "Ginger" Cahoon, 55, of Hyannis, died July 22, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Cahoon was born in Hyannis and educated in Barnstable schools. She was a receptionist at The Greenery in Hyannis for 25 years. She was a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council.

Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie L. Shea of Swansea; a sister, Helena E. Peterson of Hyannis; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport 02675.

Beverly A. Charlton, 58

Wayland ­Beverly A. Charlton, 58, a resident of Wayland and Marstons Mills, died July 18, 2000, at her Wayland home after a long illness with cancer.

She was the wife of Richard Charlton for 35 years.

Born in Alma, Mich., Mrs. Charlton graduated from Marygrove College in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in art and art history. Prior to moving to the Boston area, she taught art and crafts at the Prescott School, Peter Jones Gallery and several other venues in New Jersey and Michigan.

An accomplished artist, her watercolor pieces have been added to private collections throughout New England. She was a longtime illustrator for Gourmet magazine and the "Best of Gourmet" annual cookbooks.

Mrs. Charlton was a former member of the Scarab Club and Arts Unlimited in Detroit, Mich., the Round Valley PTO in New Jersey, a member and past president of the Wayland High School Parents' Organization, the Home for Little Wanderers, Arts Wayland, Book Club and Hospice in the Boston area. She was also a member and past president of the Woodridge Garden Club and represented the club on several occasions at the "Art in Bloom" exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Her 1998 work, "Basket of Carnations," was featured by Joyce Kulhawik of WBZ Channel 4 in her annual review of the exhibition. Mrs. Charlton's artwork was also exhibited in Cotuit.

She was an active member in the Weston Golf Club, where she served as the chairwoman of Women's Golf in 1996 and the Women's Golf Rules Committee in 1997. She was also the club's 1998 Dwight Morton Member-Member Champion.

Surviving besides her husband are four children, Michael of New York City; Steven of Beverly Farms; Peggy Boraks of Charlestown and Cheryl of Boston; her mother, Anne Cater of Alma, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Carlton W. Chase, 96

Falmouth ­ Carlton William Chase, 96, a lifelong Cape Cod resident, died July 18, 2000, at the Woodbriar Retirement Home in Falmouth after a long illness.

Born, raised and educated in Brewster, Mr. Chase graduated from Brewster High School in 1922. He worked as a painter in Brewster and Hyannis, and for 31 years he was employed by the Barnstable Department of Public Works. He retired in 1969.

Mr. Chase also had worked as a caretaker for the Hyannis Baptist Church since 1974. For the past eight years, he lived at Woodbriar.

He was a member of the Fraternal Lodge AF&AM and a member of the Federated Church.

Surviving are six daughters, Florance DeMatos of Hyannis; Gloria Karram of Marstons Mills; Vilet DePont of East Falmouth; Jean White of Mashpee; Doris Chase of Hyannis and June Teixeira of East Falmouth; 40 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Sylvia H. Colton, 75

West Barnstable ­ Sylvia H. (Hall) Colton, 75, a Cape resident since 1978, died July 17, 2000, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Pavilion after an illness.

She was the wife of Dudley T. Colton Jr., who died in 1972.

Born in Boston, Mrs. Colton was raised there and in the Andover area. She was a buyer for Jordan Marsh and other department stores in the Boston area. She worked for a number of years before leaving to become a homemaker and raise her family. Her family moved around because of her husband's career, but she lived 15 years in the Martinsville, N.J. area.

She moved to the Cape in 1978, settling in West Barnstable.

One of her hobbies was dog breeding. She did volunteer work at Cape Cod Hospital.

Surviving are two daughters, Deborah G. Colton of Newton and Dawn Colton-Mund of Germany; two sons, Dudley T. Colton III of Arlington, Tex. and Dennis H. Colton of Plymouth; a sister, Mary Piper of Engelwood, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Ellen J. Gauthier, 76

Osterville ­ Ellen J. (McDonald) Gauthier, 76, died July 18, 2000, at her home after a long illness.

She was the wife of Robert E. Gauthier.

Mrs. Gauthier was born in Brockton and graduated from Weymouth High School. She served with the WAVES during World War II.

Mrs. Gauthier retired from the Braintree School Department, where she worked as a bookkeeper, and later retired from Cape Cod Bank and Trust, where she worked in the main office.

She moved to Osterville from Braintree 20 years ago.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gauthier is survived by a daughter, Barbara Ann Gauthier of Abington; a son, John J. Gauthier of Dallas, Tex.; a brother, Joseph McDonald of West Bridgewater; and two grandchildren.
