Evelyn Lake, 67

Centerville ­ Evelyn (Haagensen) Lake, 67, died unexpectedly July 17, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Harry E. Lake Jr.

Mrs. Lake was born in Milford, Conn., and raised and educated in Glastonbury, where she graduated from high school. She attended the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus, for two years before her marriage in 1952. She then settled in Franklin and later in Bristol and Orange, Conn.

She and her family moved to Centerville in 1967, but lived in Maryland for a little more than four years, where Mrs. Lake worked for Bechtel Power Co. in Gaithersburg, Md., as an administrative assistant.

She worked for the Sea-Lake Corp. of Sandwich from 1980 to 1990.

She loved animals and enjoyed gardening, doing crossword puzzles, reading and traveling.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Lake is survived by a son, Steven E. Lake of Jupiter, Fla.; three daughters, Nancy Braginton-Smith of Hyannis Park, Joyce J. Budlong of Redmond, Wash., and Ellen L. Wack of Topsfield; a brother, Hans Haagensen of Old Saybrook, Conn.; four grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews.

Vivian Lally, 85

West Hyannisport ­ Vivian (Bellas) Lally, 85, a Cape resident since 1973, died July 16, 2000, at the Royal Nursing Home in Falmouth after a long illness.

She was the wife of Edward J. Lally, who died in 1987.

Born, raised and educated in Big Indian, N.Y., Mrs. Lally graduated from Bryant High School in Astoria, Long Island, N.Y. She later graduated from Jersey City Medical School as a registered nurse.

From 1947 to 1973, she was a resident of Washington , N.J. She moved to West Hyannisport in 1973.

She is survived by a niece, Nancy Schrump of Averill Park, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was the mother of Richard Lally, who died in 1994.

Walter J. Roncka, 67

Barnstable ­ Walter Joseph Roncka, 67, a resident of Barnstable, died July 14, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Joyce H. (Leandro) Roncka since 1968.

Born in Fall River, Mr. Roncka was a 1950 graduate of BMC Durfee in Fall River. He also attended Bradford Durfee College and Fisher College.

Mr. Roncka served in the Air Force during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Air Force, he was an engineering manager for New England Telephone, NYNEX throughout Massachusetts, primarily in Fall River, Walpole, Framingham, Worcester and on Cape Cod. After his retirement in 1991, he worked at Sears and Edwards Boatyard in Falmouth.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Realtors Association and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Michael J. Roncka of Framingham and Scott M. Roncka of Northboro; and two brothers, Joseph Roncka of Somerset and Thomas J. Roncka of New Bedford.

Clara E. Souza, 71

Barnstable ­ Clara Elizabeth Souza, 71, a homemaker, died July 19, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of the late Robert B. Souza.

Born in Cambridge, Mrs. Souza attended high school in Provincetown. She worked several years at Anthony's Cummaquid Inn.

A lifelong resident of the Cape, she was a homemaker who dedicated her life to raising her children and enjoying her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She also enjoyed spending winters in Florida.

Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor M. Lucas of Hyannis; five sons, Glenn Souza of Mashpee, James F. Souza of Hyannis, Joseph Souza of Dennisport, Richard Allen Souza of Centerville and Robert B. Souza Jr. of West Yarmouth; a brother, James Corcoran of South Dennis; a sister, Eleanor Dennis of Hyannis; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late John P. Souza.

Lenore 'Lee' Stearns

East Sandwich ­ Lenore "Lee" Stearns, a resident of East Sandwich, died July 20, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Bill Stearns, who died in 1984.

Born and educated in Lowell, Mrs. Stearns was a resident of Chelmsford for many years before moving to Hyannis in 1972. She most recently made her home with her grandson in East Sandwich.

Mrs. Stearns worked at CVS at the Cape Cod Mall from 1975 until 1990. She then worked as a salon coordinator at Infinity Day Spa in Hyannis until her retirement in 1996.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Lee Jason of Brewster; a son, Ronald B. Fitzpatrick of South Carolina; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Raymond W. Bednark, 87

Centerville ­ Raymond W. Bednark, 87, a resident of Centerville, died July 21, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Eleanor (Hill) Bednark.

Born in Marilla, N.Y., Mr. Bednark spent his early life in Alden, N.Y., where he attended the Iron Bridge School. He worked on the family farm and later for the National Lead Co. making railroad bearings.

Mr. Bednark entered the Army in 1940 and served during World War II in the 102nd AAA Battalion, which was one of the first units to be shipped overseas. He served in the Pacific Theater and was stationed in New Guinea and Australia.

After the war, he returned to Cape Cod and married in 1945. He then worked as a self-employed contractor until retiring in 1980.

An avid gardener, bowler and sporstman, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Dennis F. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2578.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, R. Walter Bednark and Thomas Bednark, both of Centerville; a brother, Francis "Ben" Bednark of Hyannis; four grandchildren; an uncle; and a nephew.

Clare M. Burdett, 73

Centerville ­ Clare M. (Van Riper), 73, of Centerville, died Saturday at home after a long illness.

She was the wife of Harry W. Burden Jr.

Mrs. Burdett was born in Patterson, N.J., educated in the Glen Rock, N.J., schools and was a graduate of Ridgewood High School. She was a 1948 graduate of Montclair State College, N.J. She was a high school history and social studies teacher at Dover High School in Dover, N.J.

Mrs. Burdett and her family were longtime residents of Ridgewood. She moved to Chelmsford in 1984 and to Centerville in 1985. While a resident of New Jersey, she was a member of the College club of Ridgewood and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. After moving to Cape Cod, she attended services at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Linda B. Sisson of Centerville; and two grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Unitarian Church of Barnstable.

Jeannette Crawford, 82

South Yarmouth ­ Jeannette (Reed) Crawford, 82, a Cape resident since 1970, died July 26, 2000, at her home.

She was the wife of the late George Crawford.

Born, raised and educated in Whitman, Mrs. Crawford attended Green Mountain Junior College in Poultney, Vt., and graduated from Chamberlain Junior College in Boston.

Mrs. Crawford moved to the Cape in 1970, where she lived in Sandwich and Cotuit before moving to Bass River in 1996. She was a former resident of Rockland and had also lived in Northampton, N.H., prior to moving to the Cape. She formerly worked for Buttner's in Hyannis.

Surviving are two sons, Phillip Reed Crawford of Exeter, N.H., and George H. Crawford of South Yarmouth; a sister, Anne F. Reed of Dallas, Tex., two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

She was also the mother of the late Peter Spence Crawford.

John J. Eveland, 77

Marstons Mills ­ John J. Eveland, 77, a resident of Marstons Mills, died July 20, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital from complications after surgery.

He was the husband of Millicent Stevens Eveland.

Mr. Eveland was born in Waynesboro, Penn. He graduated in 1942 from Palmyra High School in Palmyra, N.Y. and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. for one year. During World War II, he served in the Army, first in an anti-aircraft division and then as an MP guarding German and Italian POWs. After the war he spent three and a half years at a tuberculosis sanitarium in Ithaca, N.Y., having contracted the disease during wartime.

After his recovery, he was married in 1952 and graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., in 1954. During the following years, Mr. Eveland taught high school English, and worked in retail and then settled in Rochester, N.Y. in 1964. He retired from employment with the U.S. Post Office in 1988, and in 1993 he fulfilled a dream of retiring to Cape Cod.

For the last four years, Mr. Eveland had served as a volunteer math and spelling tutor at Osterville Bay Elementary, where in 1999 he was the recipient of the "Going the Extra Mile" award.

An avid backyard birder and squirrel chaser, Mr. Eveland also enjoyed traveling, painting, Dixieland jazz, mysteries, the Internet and puns and jokes.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Jonathan of Laurel, Md. and Joseph of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Sarah of Washington , D.C.; two brothers, George of Dennis and R. Gilliam of Venice, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in St. John's Episcopal Church, 161 Main St., Sandwich. A ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
