Sandra L. Sullivan, 60

East Sandwich - Sandra Lee Sullivan, 60, died Aug. 30, 2000, at home following a short illness.

Ms. Sullivan was born in Concord, N.H.

She graduated magna cum laude from Bridgewater State College in 1976 with a bachelor of science in education degree.

After her graduation and until her death, she worked as a teacher in the Bourne and Barnstable public schools.

Ms. Sullivan was a past president of the Cape and Islands Chapter of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving and was a trained victims advocate. Her work with MADD came as the result of the death of her 14-year-old daughter, Jean Marie LaFlamme, as a result of an accident involving a drunken driver in 1981.

Ms. Sullivan was a member of the St. Mark of Ephesus Orthodox Church in Kingston.

She leaves a son, John Leonard LaFlamme of Bourne; two daughters, Lisa Jean McAuley of Mansfield and Susan McCarron of Rowley; a brother, Peter Sullivan of Albuquerque, N.M., and six grandchildren.

She was the former wife of John L. LaFlamme.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the St. Mark of Ephesus Orthodox Church in Kingston.

Edith M. Wiggins, 83

Cotuit - Edith M. (Christian) Wiggins, 83, a Cape resident and business owner, died Aug. 29, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Paul H. Wiggins for 59 years.

Born in Boston, Mrs. Wiggins was raised in Roslindale. She was a resident of Holbrook before moving to Chatham in 1957.

Mrs. Wiggins and her husband owned Wiggins Camera & Art Supplies for 11 years. They moved to Cotuit in 1968.

She was a member of the Troop Committee of Troop 52 in Cotuit.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Paul H. Wiggins Jr. of Mount Vernon, Ohio; two daughters, Patricia F. Sanderson and Judith M. Nickerson, both of Cotuit; a sister, Helen E. Macdonald of Cotuit; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-stepgrandchildren.

Vernon L. Blackmer, 78

South Yarmouth - Vernon L. Blackmer, 78, died Sept. 12, 2000, at his home after a long illness with heart disease.

Mr. Blackmer was born and raised in Hyannis where he attended Barnstable schools. He worked at various jobs until he joined the Army in 1942. He served in the South Pacific during World War II, fighting in numerous major battles including Guadalcanal and Okinawa.

After discharge, he worked as a carpenter in the Mid-Cape area until he retired in 1981 due to health reasons.

Mr. Blackmer is survived by a daughter, Norma Kelley of Yarmouthport; a son, Timothy Blackmer of Rockland; his longtime companion, Ruth Cash; a grandson; a great-grandson; a nephew; and several cousins.

Adeline B. DiRico, 91

Boston - Adeline B. (DePesa) DiRico, 91, a homemaker and resident of Boston and Osterville, died Sept. 15, 2000, at her home in Boston after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Joseph F. DiRico.

Born in Randolph, Mrs. DiRico was educated in Randolph and Braintree schools. She had lived in Boston for the past 32 years. She also lived in Osterville and Quincy.

Surviving are a daughter, Pamela A. Birmingham of Palm Beach, Fla., and Osterville; a brother, Paul DePesa of Sandwich; three sisters, Alice Howard and Ruth McMahon, both of Quincy, and Helen Zona of Florida; three grandsons; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Edward J. Doherty, 71

West Hyannisport - Edward J. Doherty, 71, who retired to the Cape in 1986, died Sept. 12, 2000, at his home after an illness.

He was the husband of A. Patricia (Murphy) Doherty.

Born and raised in Charlestown, he graduated from Charlestown High School, where he was captain of the football team. After high school, he enlisted in the Army.

Mr. Doherty returned to Charlestown and worked as a longshoreman for 10 years.

He then joined the U.S. Post Office in Boston, working out of the South Postal Annex in Boston. He retired in 1984 due to a disability.

Mr. Doherty was married in 1954 and he and his wife settled in Chelsea for many years. In 1986 they moved to Cape Cod. They also wintered in Clearwater, Fla., for many years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward G. Doherty of Clearwater, Fla., and Kevin P. Doherty of Chelsea; a sister, Anastasia Moynihan of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

James M. Gorham, 58

Hyannis - James M. Gorham, 58, a resident of Hyannis, died Sept. 13, 2000, at the Hospice House in Barnstable after an illness.

Born, raised and educated in Boston, Mr. Gorham moved to Norfolk in 1953 and was a 1961 graduate of King Philip Regional High School. He joined the Navy in 1959 and served for several years. Later, he traveled and lived on the West Coast for 20 years.

In 1990, he settled in Hyannis. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Surviving are two sons, Kevin R. Gorham of Fort Myers, Fla., and Joseph C. McDonald of Windham, N.H.; four brothers, Arthur J. Gorham, Daniel J. Gorham and Edward H. Gorham, all of Norfolk, and Paul B. Gorham of Yelm, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

David A. Hall, 52

Cotuit - David A. Hall, 52, a Cape resident since 1981, died Sept. 13, 2000, at his home of colon cancer.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., Mr. Hall was raised in Shrewsbury.

He served in the Air Force as an aircraft electronics technician from 1966 to 1970.

He graduated from San Jose State University in California and from the University of Colorado at Denver.

During his career, he worked as an urban and regional planner at state and local levels of government. He worked as a planner for the city of Lafayette, Ind., and the state of Indiana.

After moving to the Cape in 1981, Mr. Hall worked with communities on and off the Cape to improve their waste recycling and disposal systems.

Since 1990, he was employed by the Cape Cod Commission. Previously, he was administrator of the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District.

He also worked for the town of Barnstable and the former Cape Cod Planning and Economic Development Commission.

In the mid-1980s, Mr. Hall coordinated efforts that resulted in a decision by 14 Cape Cod towns to send their municipal solid waste to the SEMASS waste-to-energy facility in Rochester, thereby allowing most landfills on Cape Cod to be closed.

Mr. Hall served on the Barnstable Conservation Commission from 1983 to 1986, on the board of directors of MassRecycle Inc. from 1997 to 1999 and was a former volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was also an avid enthusiast of BMW motorcycles.

Surviving are three brothers, Edward A. Hall of Worcester, Bernard W. Hall Jr. of Maynard and John H. Hall of Grafton; four sisters, Christine A. Williams of Barefoot Bay, Fla., Frances M. Kelly of Morris Plains, N.J., Virginia L. McGowan of Shrewsbury and Mary H. Frazer of Warrenton, Va.; and 22 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at St. David's Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Helene Snow Hazelton, 92

Centerville ­ Helene Snow (Cahoon) Hazelton, 92, died Sept. 14, 2000, at Harbor Point in Centerville.

She was the wife of the late James B. Hazelton, who died in 1984.

Born in Hanover, at the home of her grandmother and the Harold Studley family, she spent her early childhood in Chicago and Cincinnati before moving to North Harwich, the ancestral home of her father, Sylvanus Arthur Cahoon.

She graduated from Brooks Academy in Harwich Center where she was an honor student, and was awarded several elocution medals.Later, she worked as a telephone operator.

After marriage, Mrs. Hazelton lived in Hyannis, where she was a homemaker who enjoyed the summer friends who resided in the family home while working on the Cape. While living in Hyannis, she taught Sunday school at the First Baptist Church in Hyannis.

During World War Two, she lived in the Ponds Area of Pembroke, and joined the Order of Eastern Star. She moved back to Cape Cod with her family in 1949 to Dennisport.

Her favorite pastimes were stitchery crafts, word puzzles, poring over trade magazines, visiting with friends and family, watching young children, and driving around Cape Cod.

When Mrs. Hazelton and her family returned to Cape Cod, she founded Hazelton's Gift Shop in Dennisport and, with her husband, founded a second shop across the street that became the familiar "Mom & Pop" enterprises.

Mrs. Hazelton served as treasurer of the Cape Cod Chapter of The Quota Club for several years and was a mentor for well-known Cape business women.

In 1986, she was the first recipient of an award from the Gift Trade wholesale buying center of New England located in Bedford, cited for "outstanding contributions, integrity, demonstrated involvement and faith in gift and its affiliated industries."

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Hazelton Crocker of Cotuit; her sister, Myra Dunford of Cape Cod and Carver; a granddaughter, Carolyn Crocker of Hyannis; a grandson, James Lauchlan Crocker of Colorado Springs, Col.; and three great grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Sunday School at the First Baptist Church, 486 Main St., Hyannis MA 02601.

Judith A. Hemming, 46

Barnstable - Judith Ann Hemming, 46, a Barnstable resident for the past 25 years, died Sept. 10, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

Born, raised and educated in Rochester, N.Y., Miss Hemming lived in Barnstable for 25 years. She was a vice president at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts in Boston for several years.

Surviving are her parents, George and Mary Jane Hemming of Pittsford, N.Y.; two sisters, Carol Webb and Karen Hemming, both of Rochester, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Komen Boston Race for the Cure (Breast Cancer Foundation), P.O. Box 140, Boston, MA 02134.

Georgiana Holmes, 61

West Yarmouth - Georgiana (Murphy) Holmes, 61, a longtime Cape resident, died Sept. 12, 2000, in Centerville after a short illness.

She was the wife of Jon L. Holmes, who died in 1993.

Mrs. Holmes was born in Winchester. She was a graduate of Barnstable High School in 1956 and in 1957, she married and moved to West Yarmouth where she lived until her death.

She worked for Holmestead Nursery Landscaping as a secretary and bookkeeper.

Mrs. Holmes loved to garden. For many years she was a member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church, serving on the board of deacons and as chairwoman of the altar committee.

She is survived by two sons, Jon L. Holmes Jr. and Daniel M. Holmes, both of West Yarmouth; a daughter, Maureen Wiggin of Hyannis; two sisters, Elaine Kelley and Helen Allbecker, both of Hyannis; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
