William L. Laffey, 80

Hyannis ­ William L. Laffey, 80, a summer resident of Hyannis, died Sept. 16, 2000, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion in Hyannis after an illness.

He was the husband of Eleanor E. (Podles) Laffey for 52 years.

Mr. Laffey was born in Pawtucket, R.I., and was a graduate of Pawtucket High School. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Mr. Laffey was executive vice president of Robinson Thread Co. of Worcester. He had lived in Woonsocket, R.I., and Santa Monica, Calif., and spent summers in Hyannis.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Sheila A. Laffey of Santa Monica, Calif.; Nancy Jane Mazza of Moore Park, Calif.; and Joan L. Nelson of Hyannis; two sisters, Ruth Burgess of Pawtucket, R.I.; and Catherine Kirchgesler of Oregon; and two grandchildren.

Nelson H. Morin, 83

Marstons Mills - Nelson H. Morin, 83, died Sept. 12, 2000, at his home in Marstons Mills following a brief illness.

He was the husband of Victoria (Yarnick) Morin for 61 years.

Mr. Morin was born in Millville. He served in the Army during World War II as a technical sergeant and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He had lived on the Gulf Coast of Florida for the past 22 years, most recently in Port Richey. During that time, he summered on Cape Cod, moving recently to Marstons Mills to be near family.

He was founder and president of Nelmor Co. Inc. in Uxbridge, a company that developed and led innovations in the reclamation of plastic scrap.

Before his retirement in 1978, he designed and patented a plastic materials granulating system used to reclaim and reuse plastic scrap for use in plastics-processing plants throughout the world.

He was noted for his quick wit, savvy business sense and commitment to family.

Mr. Morin enjoyed boating and golf. He was a charter member of Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, R.I., and he held memberships at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, Whitinsville Golf Club, Countryside Country Club in Clearwater, Fla., and Timber Greens in New Port Richey.

An avid boater and sailor, he designed and built a 39-foot sailboat that he frequently sailed in the Gulf of Mexico.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Barbara Lynch of Marstons Mills; a son, Richard Morin of Cottage Grove, Minn.; a sister, Theresa O'Brien of Saunderstown, R.I.; three grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 14 at St. Augustine's Church in Millville.

Myrtle E. Nearhos, 71

Centerville - Myrtle E. (Rich) Nearhos, 71, a resident of Centerville, died Sept. 12, 2000, at Falmouth Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Boston, she was raised and educated in Winthrop and Medford, and graduated from Medford High School in 1946. She settled in Acton and moved to Hyannis in 1964. She worked for many years in the restaurant business.

After raising her children as a single parent, she began commuting to Boston and attending college. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1985, with a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology. She received a master's degree in education from UMass-Boston in 1988.

During the 1960s and 1970s, she coached girls softball and basketball in Centerville schools. She was an avid artist, working in oils and acrylics. She also wrote poetry.

Surviving are two sons, Gregory J. Nearhos of Centerville and Christopher J. Nearhos of Hyannis; two daughters, Leslie A. Reynolds of Marstons Mills and Janet N. Jenkins of Hyannis; a brother, Herbert H. Rich of Auburn; and four grandchildren.

David S. Stephens, 69

Hyannis - David S. Stephens, 69, of Hyannis, formerly of Harwich and Framingham, died Sept. 13, 2000, at his home.

He was the former husband of Mary (Berry) Stephens, who died in 1995.

Born in Korce, Albania, Mr. Stephens was raised in Framingham, where he graduated from Framingham High School. He also served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Stephens owned and operated a vending business, Cape Wide Vending Services, until retiring five years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda M. Stephens of Centerville; a son, David P. Stephens of New York; a sister, Marie E. Stephens of Ashland; three grandchildren and several cousins.

Aina Ingeborg Tullberg, 81

Harwich - Aina Ingeborg (Johansson) Tullberg, 81, a longtime resident of Harwich, died at the Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester following a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Sten Tullberg.

Mrs. Tullberg was born in Gallo, Sweden. An avid skier who began learning to ski at the age of 3, she worked at a Swedish ski resort as a teenager.

She moved to Winchester in 1950, and worked in the Aberjona Nursing Center and at Winchester Hospital, retiring to Harwich in 1972.

She had been an active member of the Unitarian Church in Winchester.

After moving to Harwich Mrs. Tullberg worked in the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. She was a founding member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Harwich and a longtime member of the Vasa Lodge.

Surviving are her children, Ralph D. Tullberg of Winchester, Elizabeth Tranchida and Andrine Wisnioski, both of Florida, and Ove Tullberg of Maryland; a brother, Haldo Johansson of Sweden; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on Sept. 24 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in East Harwich.

Wayland E. 'Ted' Vaughan, 65

Edinboro, Pa. - Wayland E. "Ted" Vaughan, 65, of Edinboro and Centerville, died July 14, 2000, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

He was the husband of Barbara Badoian Vaughan for 41 years.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Cambridge. He graduated from Needham High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1955 and a master's degree from Rutgers University in 1969.

He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957, earning the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

Mr. Vaughan taught at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania , retiring in 1992 after 13 years. He also coached the school's hockey team. He also worked in Edinboro's restaurant industry for 12 years.

He was a member of the Jaycees in Princeton, N.J., the American Marketing Association, and St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Edinboro.

Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Wayland E. Vaughan Jr. and J. Michael Vaughan, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., Richard Vaughan of Port Matilda, Pa., and Robert Vaughan of Edinboro; three sisters, Eleanor Beckwith of Wayland, Marilyn Pierce of Cotuit and Emily Louise Crosby of Osterville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made "in memory of Wayland Vaughan for IPF research" to University of Pittsburgh, Pulmonary Division, 440 Scaife Hall, 3550 Terrace St., Pittsburgh, PA 15261.

Luella M. West, 102

Clarkdale, Ariz. - Luella M. (Cahoon) West, 102, a longtime resident of Dennis and Yarmouth, died Sept. 12, 2000, at her daughter's home in Clarkdale.

She was the wife of Harry West, who died in 1962.

Mrs. West was born in Dennis and graduated from Dennis Normal School. She worked at Colonial Candle of Hyannis for many years.

A longtime member of the Pentecostal Church in Dennis, she enjoyed gardening and birds.

Surviving are two sons, Alton West and Harold West, both of South Yarmouth; two daughters, Phyllis Hunter of Clarkdale and Evelyn Groom of West Yarmouth; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late Herbert Fenn.

Gladys E. White , 93

Hyannis ­Gladys E. (Nickerson) Peterson, 93, a longtime resident of Hyannis, died Sept. 17, 2000, at a local nursing home.

She was the wife of the late Dr. J. Louis White .

Mrs. White was born in Harwich and was a graduate of Provincetown High School and the Hyannis Teachers College. She taught elementary school in North Truro, Harwich, Holden and Dennis. She was a charter member of AARP in Hyannis and a member of the Progressive Club of Hyannis. Mrs. White began writing poetry at the age of 82 and had her work published in such periodicals as the World of Poetry, American Anthology of Poetry, Who's in Poetry and the American Art Association. Each year she wrote a poem for the Christmas party at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster. She was also a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis.

James F. Barry, 75

Cummaquid - James F. Barry, 75, a resident of Cummaquid, died Sept. 17, 2000, after surgery.

He was the husband of the late Emily J. (Tritten) Barry.

Born and educated in Utica, N.Y., Mr. Barry lived in Sudbury for many years before moving to Cummaquid in 1982.

Mr. Barry was associated with the Thom McAn division of the Melville Corp. for more than 40 years. He was appointed vice president in 1961 and subsequently held the positions of retail sales manager and general manager. He retired in 1985.

A World War II veteran, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, American Legion and the Two/Ten National Foundation. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.

Surviving are a son, Robert C. Barry of Hebron, N.H.; a daughter, Elaine M. Reilly of Natick; and four grandchildren.

Ronald H. Blommé, 57

Dennisport - Ronald Henry Blommé, 57, a resident of Dennisport, died Sept. 19, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He had had a stroke on Sept. 8.

A native of Worcester, Mr. Blommé was a longtime Cape resident. Following the death of his mother in the late 1940s, he was raised by his grandparents. They moved to Eastham in the mid-1950s.

In the mid-1960s, he graduated from Cape Cod Preparatory Academy, Cotuit and also graduated from Worcester Junior College. He was a Navy veteran and lived for a while in Toledo, Ohio, near his sister.

After returning to Eastham in the early 1970s, he worked for Tobey's in Harwich. He continued living in the family home for a number of years before moving to Walpole, N.H., in the mid-1980s.

Mr. Blommé returned to the Cape in the late 1980s and settled in Dennisport. Until recently, he managed Willow Street Feed and Grain in Hyannis and was associated with United Farm and Pet in West Barnstable at the time of his death.

Surviving are a sister, Sandra Calhoun of Sylvinia, Ohio, who was by his side at his death; four nieces, Sheri Raab, Gaile Lewandowski, Lynda West and Lynette Meinen, all of Toledo, Ohio; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
