John T. Connor, 85

Cotuit - John T. Connor, 85, of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Cotuit, died Oct. 6, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

He was the husband of Mary (O'Boyle) Connor since 1940.

Born, raised and educated in Syracuse, Mr. Connor graduated from Holy Rosary School in 1932, and from Syracuse University, receiving a bachelor of arts degree cum laude. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, president of his senior class, manager of the football team and captain of the golf team. He received a juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1939 and was a member of the New York and District of Columbia bar associations. He was also the recipient of 15 honorary degrees.

Mr. Connor was a former trustee for several colleges, universities and schools, and a member of the visiting committee of Harvard Law School. He established and financed the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund for black students at Harvard Law School in 1962.

He was in the Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946, serving as a first lieutenant and retiring as a captain. He served in the Pacific as air combat intelligence officer of a dive bombing squadron and as assistant intelligence officer of the Fourth Marine Wing.

From 1939 to 1942 Mr. Connor was an associate with the now Cravath, Swaine and Moore. From 1942 to 1944 he served with the government's Office of Scientific Research and Development, receiving the Presidential Certificate of Merit in 1948 for his work with the agency.

He was secretary and counsel at Merck & Co. Inc. from 1947 to 1965; administrative vice president, vice president and general manager of the Merck Sharp and Dohme International Division; and was for 10 years its president and chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors.

Mr. Connor was a member of the Business Council and Council on Foreign Relations, and had been a member of the board of directors at General Motors, General Foods, Chase Manhattan Bank, Sperry and Hutchinson, Warner Lambert, and American Broadcasting Companies. He was named U.S. Secretary of Commerce by President Lyndon B. Johnson, serving from 1965 to 1967. In 1975 he served as a member of President Ford's commission to investigate the CIA.

From 1967 to 1979 he was president and chief operating officer and then chairman and chief executive officer for Allied Chemical Corp. During that time he was one of the leaders of the Committee of Business Executives against the Vietnam War. Retiring from Allied in 1979, Mr. Connor became a non-executive chairman of the board of Schroders Inc. in New York, and joined the board of the parent merchant banking firm of Schroders Limited in London, serving until 1987.

For 10 years, Mr. Connor served as a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera Association and was for several years chairman of its finance committee.

He had also served as vice president and a member of the board of directors at the Metropolitan Opera Club.

For many years, Mr. Connor participated in golfing events, particularly in tournaments of the U.S. Seniors Golf Association.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, John T. Connor Jr. of Mountain Lake, Fla., and Geoffrey M. Connor of Oldwick, N.J.; a daughter, Lisa F. Connor of Oakland, Calif.; three sisters, Mary C. Waters, Jane C. Kendrick and Nancy Connor, all of Syracuse; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ithel M. Drew Jr., 75

Hyannis - Ithel M. Drew Jr., 75, died Oct. 8, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Pavilion in Hyannis.

Born in Hyannis, Mr. Drew was educated in Barnstable schools. He worked as a truck driver and co- owner of Baxter Transportation. He was later employed at Colonial Candle.

Mr. Drew enjoyed shellfishing and deer hunting in Vermont and Maine.

He is survived by two sons, Eric W. of Centerville and David M. of Sanderfield; one daughter, Joyce M. Cronin of Farmington, Maine; one brother, Kenneth Drew of Barnstable; one sister, Barbara Perry of Hyannis; and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his former wife, Vida (Cash) Drew.

MaryBeth Hansen, 72

Marstons Mills - MaryBeth Hansen, 72, a professional singer, died Oct. 7, 2000, at her home in Marstons Mills.

She was the wife of John V. E. Hansen.

Mrs. Hansen was born in Harvard, Ill., and graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Ill. She undertook private singing lessons in New York City, and performed at Carnegie Hall and numerous supper clubs. In Boston, she was a member of "Showtoppers" with Ruby Newman at the Statler Hotel, and she performed at resorts in New England.

Before moving to Marstons Mills three years ago, Mrs. Hansen lived in Alexandria, Va., where she was a member of the Springfield Community Theater. She performed in and directed numerous musical comedies for community theater. In Massachusetts, she was president of the Westboro Players Club. She was also a singing teacher and a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Karen Pillsbury of Contoocook, N.H., Melinda Hansen of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lisa Foley of Norton; and six grandchildren.

Margaret A. Hanson, 89

Hyannis - Margaret A. (Clarke) Hanson, 89, died Oct, 8, 2000, at a local nursing home.

She was the wife of the late Thomas S. Hanson.

Mrs. Hanson was educated in Nova Scotia and later graduated from Framingham High School. She attended business school at night and worked at the Framingham Trust Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1973.

She moved from Framingham to Northwood, N.H., in 1973 and from Northwood to Hyannis in 1979.

Mrs. Hanson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hyannis where she was active in volunteer work and a member of the prayer group.

She leaves two sisters, Hannah Thompson of Hyannis and Joyce Kirley of Framingham; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Douglas F. Hopkins, 58

St. Pete's Beach, Fla. - Douglas Forrest Hopkins, 58, died unexpectedly Oct. 6, 2000, at Bay Pines Veterans Administration Hospital in Bay Pines.

He was the husband of Linda L. Hopkins.

Born in Hyannis, Mr. Hopkins graduated from Bridgton Academy in 1960, where he was an exceptional hockey player. He lived in the Centerville-Osterville area until moving to Florida three years ago.

Mr. Hopkins enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam as crew chief on a helicopter. He was badly wounded and was the only survivor when his helicopter was shot down on June 26, 1964, while on a mission near Saigon. He received a Purple Heart, an Air Medal and a Vietnam Cross for bravery.

A self-taught accomplished bird carver and artist, he co-owned the studio-shop Huntingest Men in Marstons Mills, where he created and sold wooden birds.

He was a bird and boat enthusiast and had an interest in wildlife. He enjoyed the ocean and for the past three years was restoring a houseboat in St. Pete's Beach, spending part of his time on the boat and part at his home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Claire Burlingame Hopkins of Osterville; two children, Nicole and Zachery Hopkins of Annapolis, Md.; two brothers, Craig B. Hopkins of Harwich and Christopher M. Hopkins of Candor, N.Y.; five sisters, Barbara Anderlot of Barnstable, Lindsay J. Hopkins of Osterville, Tenley Zinkowski of Tamarac, Terry Hopkins of Fort Lauderdale and Tracy Pavlas of Cotuit; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service on the Cape will be announced at a later date.

Thomas F. Killoran, 71

Centerville - Thomas Foy Killoran, 71, formerly of Bethesda, Md., and Waltham, died Oct. 4, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

Mr. Killoran was the husband of the late Joan Cloutier (Horton) Killoran.

Born in Waltham, Mr. Killoran was a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston and served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Killoran was a foreign service officer for 24 years. After his retirement in 1980, he worked from 1985 to 1995 as a student job developer at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable.

Mr. Killoran loved gardening, composting and recycling.

His survivors include three daughters, Kathryn Killoran of Cambridge, Nancy Killoran of Hope, Maine, and Amy Beth Killoran of Nashua, N.H.; a son, Matthew K. Killoran of Columbia, Md.; a sister, Barbara Killoran of Boston; and four grandchildren.

Rita J. Sapone, 71

Hyannis - Rita J. (Kaminski) Sapone, 71, a Cape resident since 1994, died Oct. 8, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital after an illness.

She was the wife of Dominick Sapone, who died in 1994.

Born in Scranton, Pa., Mrs. Sapone was raised there until the age of 7 when her family moved to the Bronx, N.Y. She married in 1945 and settled in Amsterdam, N.Y.

Mrs. Sapone and her husband left Amsterdam for a short time, then returned and lived there until 1994 when they moved to Hyannis.

She was an active member and communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis and was active with the Columbiettes Association and the National Postal Carriers Association while living in New York.

An avid gardener, she also loved cooking and craft making.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara J. Bant, with whom she lived; a brother, Robert Paccione of Lecanto, Fla.; two sisters, Sophia Verdon of Horsehead, N.Y., and Dolores Postolowski of Florida; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

Lillian Amsden, 91

Hyannis - Lillian (Sampson) Amsden, 91, of Hyannis, died Oct. 21, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Amsden was born in Middleboro and moved to Brockton in her youth, living there for many years. She later moved to Hartford, Conn., and resided there for more than 20 years. While in Hartford she was employed with the housing authority, and was also an accountant for the American Red Cross.

She moved to Cape Cod more than 25 years ago, settling in Hyannis and remaining there until her death. She is remembered as a loving and dedicated mother.

Surviving are two sons, James Ryan of Rockwell, Texas , and Richard Ryan of Branford, Conn.; a daughter, Deborah Pinnell of Centerville; a sister, Dorothy Callahan of Brockton; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret S. Antonia, 84

Hyannis - Margaret S. Antonia, 84, of Hyannis, died Oct. 23, 2000, at the Mayflower Place Nursing Center in West Yarmouth.

She was the wife of Francis J. Antonia.

Mrs. Antonia was born in Boston. She lived in Florida for 15 years and in Hyde Park for 62 years, prior to moving to Hyannis four years ago.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Canton and the Presbyterian Church in Hyde Park.

Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Marsha M. Keith of Canton and Paula L. Indelicato of Osterville; two sisters, Leonora Cohen of Canton and Jessie Cohen of Canton; a brother, Duncan MacLeod of Canton; and three grandchildren.

Marion L. Caron, 88

Spencer ­ Marion L. (Welch) Caron, 88, died Oct, 25, 2000, at Clark Manor Nursing Home in Spencer after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Alphonse R. Caron, who died in 1973.

Born in Adams, she lived in Brookfield for 40 years and for several years on Cape Cod, where she was a waitress at several restaurants before retiring. She moved to Spencer eight years ago.

Surviving are two sons, Donald R. Caron of Brimfield and Russell P. Caron of South Yarmouth; a daughter, Jean T. Letendre of Brookfield; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sons: Richard A., David. T., Edward D. and Michael W. Caron, all of Brookfield.

Lauchlan M. Crocker

Barnstable - Lauchlan M. Crocker, a lifelong resident of Barnstable, died Oct. 15, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Jean (Sheraton) Crocker.

Mr. Crocker was an Army veteran, serving in the Aleutians during World War II.

Mr. Crocker gave 61 years of public service to the town of Barnstable, including serving as a town meeting member, deputy chief of the Barnstable Fire District Fire Engineers, water commissioner, on the Sandy Neck Commission and the Sandy Neck Advisory Board, chairman of the former Barnstable Park and Recreation Committee and president of the former Barnstable Village Betterment Association.

Mr. Crocker was also past president of the Bass River Rod and Gun Club and past president of the Sandy Neck Cottage Owners Association. He was a member of the Cape Cod Foresters and Firefighters Association, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was recently honored as a 50-year member of the Fraternal Lodge of Masons in Centerville.

Surviving besides his wife are five daughters, Sandra C. Chase of Harwich, Judith C. Friel of Naples, Fla., Pamela D. Brown of West Barnstable, Laurie M. Crocker of Yarmouthport and Wilhelmina E. Macomber of Sandwich; two brothers, Merle M. Crocker of Cotuit and James H. Crocker of Osterville; two sisters, Anne Weaver of Navarre, Fla., and Doris Easter of Reisterstown, Md.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
