Warren J. McKim, 69

Port Charlotte, Fla. - Warren J. McKim, 69, a former resident of Centerville, died Dec. 21, 2000, at Fawcett Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Patricia Perry McKim, who died in 1998.
Born in Somerville, Mass., Mr. McKim was raised in Centerville. He lived for many years on his family farm in Northfield, N.H., before moving to Florida about 12 years ago.
Mr. McKim served in the Navy during the Korean War and had worked as a carpenter, police officer, firefighter and was self-employed for many years.
During the past 10 years, he was a supervisor at the Senior Friendship Center, East Marion Meal Site in Port Charlotte.
Surviving are four children, Patsy M. Wells and John D. McKim, both of Sanbornton, N.H., Robert L. McKim of Port Charlotte and Sharon F. Wells of Akron, Ohio; a brother, Donald H. McKim; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several cousins.
A memorial service for the family will be held at a later date in Northfield, N.H.

Phyllis E. Scudder, 85

Cotuit - Phyllis E. (Morgan) Scudder, 85, died Dec. 24, 2000, at Bon Secours - Venice Hospital in Florida following a long illness.
She was the wife of Walter Crosby Scudder, who died in 1986.
Born in Springfield, Mrs. Scudder received a bachelor's degree in education in 1938 from Bridgewater Teachers College. She began teaching first and second grades in Brewster and then Cotuit until 1941.
Following her marriage, she continued teaching and in 1947 was one of the founders and workers in the first cooperative Kindergarten/nursery school in the town of Barnstable.
Her focus on children continued as a den mother and a Girl Scout leader. She attended the Cotuit Federated Church, serving on the Religious Education Committee, Diaconte, as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Cotuit Women's Fellowship since 1942. She was also a past member of the Osterville Garden Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.
As an accomplished artist in watercolor and sculpture, she was a member of the Cape Cod Art Association, the Venice Area Art League and the Sumi-e Society of America.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean S. Burrill of Bridgewater; two sons, Scott M. Scudder of Rochester, N.Y., and Winthrop D. Scudder of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service in Cotuit is planned for March.

Maureen C. Smith, 55

Hyannis - Maureen C. (McGuire) Smith, 55, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 31, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion after a long illness.
She was the wife of Arthur Smith, who died in 1990.
Born, raised and educated in Taunton, Mrs. Smith moved to Hyannis and received her licensed practical nurse degree from Cape Cod Hospital in the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s, she married and began raising her family.
Mrs. Smith worked as an LPN for Cape Cod Hospital, Windsor Nursing Home and several Cape Cod nursing agencies before working at the former Centerville Nursing Home. She retired in 1994 because of her illness.
She also helped her husband operate the former Art & Jakes Place in Hyannis in the late 1960s and she helped with family-owned cottages in Bass River during the 1970s and early 1980s.
She enjoyed crocheting, doing crosswords, playing cribbage and spending time at the beach.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur A. Smith of Hyannis and Aaron of South Hadley; a daughter, Alicia Smith of Hyannis; a brother, Daniel McGuire of Taunton; two sisters, Patricia Slavin of Taunton and Susan St. Goddard of Ashland, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

William H. Stewart, 80

West Hyannisport - William H. "Bill" Stewart, 80, a retired automobile salesman, died Jan. 3, 2001, at the Holyoke Soldiers Home in Holyoke after a long illness.
He was the husband of the late Marylyn J. (Hunt) Stewart for 52 years.
Born in Chatham, Mr. Stewart was raised in Hyannis and graduated from Barnstable High School, where he had an outstanding basketball and football career, and was captain of the 1938 football team. He later had an active interest in youth sports and scouting throughout his life.
He served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. He and his wife moved to West Hyannisport in the early 1940s.
He worked as an automobile salesman.
Mr. Stewart was a longtime member of the Masons; Mattakeese Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in South Yarmouth; Hyannis Lodge of Elks 1549; the Disabled American Veterans and the West Barnstable Deer Club.
Surviving are a son, Billie Stewart of Holyoke; a brother, Fred Stewart of Bakersfield, Calif.; three granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of Richard Stewart, who died in 1975.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Unit, c/o Soldiers Home in Holyoke, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.

Julia F. Tessein, 83

Sandwich ­ Julia (Fischer) Tessein, 83, died Jan. 4, 2001, in Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late Charles E. Tessein.
Born in New York City, she worked for 32 years at Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., and resided in the area until her retirement in 1982. After that, she spent her time deeply involved with her family.
Since 1990, she had been a member of First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable.
She is survived by two brothers, John Fischer of Jacksonville, Fla., and Robert Schach of West Windsor, N.J.; two sons, Terry C. Tessein of Sandwich and William F. Tessein of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, David Tessein; Charles Tessein of Concord, N.H.; Cindy Eldredge of Harwich; Caren Harris of Andover; Todd Tessein of Levittown, Penn.; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable. Funeral services will be held in Princeton at a future date. Friends of the family may contact Terry Tessein in early February for details.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Lung Association.

Helen E. Bankston, 91

Hyannis - Helen E. (MacDonald) Bankston, 91, died Dec. 29, 2000, at the Greenery Rehabilitation Facility in Hyannis.
She was the wife of Carl O. Bankston who died in 1998.
Mrs. Bankston was born and raised in Jersey City, N.J., and graduated from high school there. She attended the Ethel Trapp Hagen School of Design, and became a catalogue fashion artist in New York City and Washington , D.C., for Sears Roebuck Co. and Pagano's for many years.
Mrs. Bankston became a homemaker and raised her family, moving to Cape Cod in 1954 from Weehawken, N.J. She and her husband owned and operated Carl's Studio on Main Street in Hyannis until 1962. She worked as a proofreader for 21 years for the Cape Cod Times, until her retirement in 1990. She continued to work as a freelance artist throughout her lifetime and enjoyed news and politics.
Surviving are a son, Paul J. Bankston of Milwaukee, Wis.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Donald Bankston.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Mildred E. Bickford, 75

South Sandwich - Mildred E. (Vieira) Bickford, 75, a resident of South Sandwich, died Dec. 16, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the wife of Earle Bickford.
Born and raised in Taunton, Mrs. Bickford was a 1943 graduate of Taunton High School. She lived in San Bernardino, Calif., for one year before returning to Taunton. She moved to Hyannis in 1963.
An avid reader and gardener, she also enjoyed needlepoint and bird-watching.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, David Bickford of South Yarmouth; two daughters, Lynne Temple of South Sandwich and Donna Bickford of Mashpee; two brothers, Merrill Vieira and Lawrence Vieira, both of Taunton; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Julie F. Carapezza, 49

Centerville - Julie Faith (Wood) Carapezza, 49, a Cape native, died unexpectedly Dec. 13, 2000.
She was the longtime companion of Robert Belanger.
Born and raised on Cape Cod, she was a resident of Centerville and graduated from Barnstable High School.
She was creative and enjoyed making silk arrangements and wreaths, and also loved photography. Known for her fondness of horses, her 1994 El Dorado and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, she especially loved to ride on the back of Bebop's Harley. She also enjoyed traveling and had memorable vacations to Sturgis and Bike Week in Daytona, Fla.
Besides her companion, she is survived by a daughter, Randi Lee Carapezza of Marstons Mills; three brothers, Kenneth O. Wood of North Falmouth, Wayne C. Wood of New Hampshire and Charles Wood of Centerville; four sisters, Sheila Frazier of Cotuit, Holly C. Wood of Centerville, Shelley A. Wood of Hyannis and Kimberly B. Wood of Dennis; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
