Ruth Alice Pierce, 92

Hyannis - Ruth Alice (Spooner) Pierce, 92, a resident of Cape Winds Rest Home, died Jan. 23, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital.
Born in Brockton, she was a longtime resident of Osterville, where she was a member of the Osterville Baptist Church.
She enjoyed knitting, walking and being with friends.
Surviving are five children, Gerry Pierce and Ruth Wolfgram, both of Schenectady, N.Y., Eleanor Cunningham of Brewster, David Pierce of South Yarmouth and Carol Nobre of Hyannis; a brother, Leonard Spooner of California; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Meredith.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Francis H. Spezzaferri, 79

Barnstable - Francis H. Spezzaferri, 79, a resident of Barnstable and a Navy veteran who served during World War II, died Jan. 20, 2001, at the Bourne Manor Extended Care Facility.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Billios) Spezzaferri of Plymouth.
A former Melrose resident, Mr. Spezzaferri worked in the real estate business.
Surviving beside his wife are one daughter, Lucille Souza of Plymouth; one sister, Adrienne Destefano; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

Robert H. 'Stoney' Stone, 69

Centerville - Robert H. "Stoney" Stone, 69, a resident of Centerville, died Jan. 24, 2001, after a long illness.
He was the husband of Ruth (Usher) Stone.
Born in Portland, Maine, Mr. Stone was a 1950 graduate of Portland High School.
Mr. Stone spent 20 years in the military, retiring as a master sergeant in 1970 from the Air Force. He also served in the Army and the Navy. His tours of duty took him to Korea for 11/2 years and Australia for two years and he also served in Germany and Japan. His last assignment was as a recruiter in Upper New York, where he received a plaque as the top recruiter in the United States.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 206 of Hyannis, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2578 of Hyannis, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 96 of Hyannis, Korean War Veterans of Cape Cod Chapter 1, Massachusetts Veterans Association and Osterville Veterans Club. He also was a 30-year member of the Lions Club of Centerville-Osterville.
He was employed for 15 years in the engineering department for the town of Barnstable and for 11 years at veterans services.
Mr. Stone was a member of the United Methodist of Osterville for more than 40 years and a member of the Holly Ridge Golf Club Men's League. He enjoyed gardening, playing golf and working in his yard.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Grace Stone of Portland, Maine; two stepsons, David C. Sundelin of Groveland and Stephen J. Sundelin of Marstons Mills; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth A. Sundelin of Milford, Mich.; a brother, Timothy Stone of Rockwood, Maine; a sister, Cindy Wintle of Portland, Maine; and two granddaughters.

Robert E. 'Bob' Svensson, 68

Hyannis - Robert Eric "Bob" Svensson, 68, died Jan. 23, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion from multiple myeloma, a form of cancer, and related complications.
He was the husband of Janet G. (Griffin) Svensson.
Born in Barnstable, Mr. Svensson grew up in Sweden, returning to the United States as a young man. He served in the Navy as a quartermaster on the destroyer USS Caperton during the Korean War. He was attending a reunion with his Navy friends shortly before his cancer was discovered in November 1997.
He remained vigorous and active until about a month before his death, enjoying time with his family, yard work, and walks with his much-loved dog, Snuggles.
A chef early in his working life at the family's seasonal business, Captain Gray's Swedish Smorgasbord in Barnstable Village, most of his career was spent as a long-haul truck driver, the last 10 years driving for T.F. Boyle Transportation Inc. of Billerica.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lori J. Svensson of Hyannis; his mother, Linnea Svensson; a sister, Lisbeth Svensson of South Yarmouth; a brother, Kenneth Svensson of Hyannis; a niece; and a nephew.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod; the American Cancer Society; or the First Lutheran Church.

Samuel J. Walsh, 58

St. Petersburg, Fla. ­ Samuel J. Walsh, 58, called the "conscience of the veteran" within the executive leadership of the federal Veterans Administration, died Jan. 20, 2001, at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a lengthy battle with colon cancer.
He was the husband of Mary (Duarte) Walsh for 32 years.
Born in Hyannis, he was a 1961 graduate of Barnstable High School. Soldier, banker, insurance executive, Washington , D.C.-based lobbyist, veteran activist and advocate and world traveler, he called Cape Cod home most of his life.
A highly-decorated, 22-year Army non-commissioned officer, Sgt. Major Walsh served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968 as well as tours of duty in Germany and Hawaii. Stateside, he spent four years in the Office of the Army Chief of Staff and two years in the Office of the Secretary of the Army. His final two years on active duty were served "on loan" from the Pentagon as Special Assistant to the Administrator of Veteran Affairs in Washington . His military duties took him also to Turkey, Greece, most of Western Europe, South Korea, Thailand, and points between. He was awarded four Army Commendation Medals, two Joint Service Commendation Medals and three awards of the Legion of Merit.
Following his Army career, he briefly headed up a savings and loan association in San Antonio, Tex., before becoming senior vice president of Academy Insurance Group of Valley Forge, Penn. Later, he moved back to Washington to become deputy legislative director for the American Legion.
After suffering a heart attack, Mr. Walsh spent his last six working years as staff assistant to the director of the VA Medical Centers at Bay Pines, Fla., and Pittsburgh, Penn.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tanya M. Walsh of Topeka, Kan.; a son, William J. Walsh, of Seminole, Fla.; three brothers, Donald C. Walsh of Wolfeboro, N.H., Martin M. Walsh of Centerville, and William L. Walsh of Wrentham; and two sisters, Martha A. Vaccaro of Falmouth and Mary J. Govoni of Sandwich.

Mary Jane Wry, 66

Centerville - Mary Jane (Lagacy) Wry, 66, a resident of Centerville, died Jan. 21, 2001, at her home.
She was the wife of Charles A. Wry.
Born in Teaneck, N.J., Mrs. Wry was raised in Saddle River, N.J. She was a 1952 graduate of the School of the Holy Child in Suffern, N.Y., and a 1956 graduate of Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in Purchase, N.Y.
She lived and worked in Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., from 1964 until her retirement in 1996 to Cape Cod, where she had enjoyed summers on the beach with her family since her childhood.
An emergency medical technician and lifetime member of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mrs. Wry was involved in numerous community, religious and school activities in the Ho-Ho-Kus area.
On the Cape, she was an active member of the Centerville Beautification Committee and the Barnstable Newcomers Club. She was a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Centerville.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Charles A. Wry Jr. of Sudbury, Timothy Wry of Ramsey, N.J., and Jonathan Wry of New York City; a daughter, Melissa Tutunjian of Butler, N.J.; a sister, Valerie Moore of Dunwoody, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to the Foundation for a Smokefree America, P.O. Box 492028, Los Angeles, CA 90049-8028.

Ross Ogden Davies, 77

Cape Haze, Fla. ­ Ross Ogden Davies, 77, of Cape Haze, Fla., died Jan. 31, 2001, in Port Charlotte, Fla.
He was the husband of Jeannette Shepherd Davies for 54 years.
Born in Oak Bluffs, he had lived in Florida for nine years. A long-time resident of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, he was an avid boater and a Power Squadron member and teacher.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a navigator, Army Air Forces, in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater, and was a member of the CBI Veterans Association. He retired in 1988 from Commonwealth Energy, where he had held the position of general manager, Cape and Islands division. He had been a Paul Harris fellow and member of the Hyannis Rotary International.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Allyson Ross Davies of Medfield and Kathryn Davies Bruce of Wareham; a brother, Henry E. Davies of Fallbrook, Cal.; a sister, Elizabeth H. Wyckoff of Saluda, N.C.; three grandchildren; two great granddaughters; two nieces and three nephews.
The family suggests donations to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota Fla. 34238; or the American Cancer Association, South Sarasota County Unit, 2100 So. Tamiami Trail, Suite A, Venice, Fla. 34293.

Reino Albert Lampi, 87

Tilton, N.H. - Reino Albert Lampi, 87, formerly of Barnstable, died Jan. 31, 2001, at New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton.
He was the husband of Barbara (Robbins) Lampi of Meredith for 59 years.
Mr. Lampi was born in West Barnstable and lived in Barnstable until moving to Meredith in 1992.
In World War II, he served with the Army as a plotter and his duties included obtaining and determining firing data for mobile seacoast 155-milimeter cannons. He was a member of the 44th Coast Artillery Battalion in Hawaii, Saipan and Iwo Jima.
Mr. Lampi was the former owner of the Pine Spring Trout Farm in Centerville from 1964 to 1979 and was a shellfish warden for the town of Barnstable for more than 18 years.
He traveled the United States from 1986 until 1992.
Beside his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janet Waldron of Meredith; two brothers, Henry Lampi of Rhode Island and Tauno Lampi of Dennis; three sisters, Irene Henderickson of Fair Oaks, Calif., Viola Johnson Orange Vail, Calif., and Annie Hagen of Wilton, Calif.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
