Catharine Lennihan, 100

Concord - Catharine (Lewis) Lennihan, 100, formerly of Centerville, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001 at River Crest Deaconess in Concord.
She was the wife of the late Francis Lennihan.
Born in Springfield, Mrs. Lennihan attended Miss Porter's School in Springfield and graduated from North High School in Worcester. She also attended McDuffie School for Girls and Bancroft School in Worcester. She was a graduate of Columbia University School of Nursing (Presbyterian Hospital) in New York, specializing in operating room surgery with a minor in public health and sociology.
She worked as an operating room supervisor from 1928 to 1931.
Mrs. Lennihan is survived by a daughter, Sarah El Bindari of Stowe, Vt.; a son, George O. Lennihan of Newton; and two grandchildren.
She was also the mother of the late Francis Lennihan Jr.
Funeral services were held at the Deaconess Association Duval Chapel, 80 Deaconess Road, Concord. and was followed by a reception at the New England Deaconess Association in Concord. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery in Harvard.

C. Lorraine Merritt

Hyannis - C. Lorraine Merritt of Hyannis died Saturday at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion after an illness.
She was the wife of Norman R. Merritt.
Mrs. Merritt was born in Waltham and raised in Watertown. She married in 1954 and moved to Cape Cod in 1955.
She worked for New England Telephone Co. for more than 25 years. Before and after her retirement, Mrs. Merritt worked for the Cape Cod Times in Hyannis.
She loved Sandy Neck and she and her husband camped there in their motor home on many weekends.
Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Norma J. Kelley of Hyannis; a son, William Merritt of Natick; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Stephen J. Merritt.
A Mass of Christian burial was at St. Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hyannis Rescue Squad, c/o Hyannis Fire Dept., 96 High School St. Ext., Hyannis, MA 02601; or to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Rte. 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Helen V. Olofsson, 81

East Dennis - Helen V. (Venblad) Olofsson, 81, died Wenesday, Feb. 21, 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis after a long illness.
She was the wife of Herbert L. Olofsson for 59 years.
Born in Boston, Mrs. Olofsson was a graduate of North Quincy High School. She briefly lived in Waltham in 1942.
After World War II, Mrs. Olofsson returned to Waltham where she lived from 1946 to 1956. She also lived in Hampton, N.H., for a brief period of time and lived in England with her family from 1957 to 1959. From 1959 to 1983 the Olofssons lived in New Providence, N.J. and moved to East Dennis in 1983.
Mrs. Olofsson was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable, and was a former member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Murray Hill, N.J. There, she was also the director of the church's altar guild.
Mrs. Olofsson was devoted to her family.
Surviving besides her husband, are two daughters, Janice P. McNamara of Manalapan, N.J., and Carol D. Puzzella of Lansdale, Penn.; a son, Barry J. Olofsson of Chatham, N.J.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Barnstable. Burial followed in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

James F. Pfeufer

Brewster -James F. Pfeufer , 88, died at home on February 6, 2001.
He was the husband of Rika Henderson and the late Reed Champion Pfeufer.
Mr. Pfeufer was born in Comfort, TX in 1912. His grandparents were members of the German Freethinker movement who settled the area around 1848. He was raised in Harlem, NY, where he became an artist, scholar and clarinetist. He was high school class valedictorian, and attended City College of New York.
A lifelong teacher and artist, he was the president of the Boston Writers' and Artists' Union under the Works Projects Administration in the 1930's. During WW II he designed the first easy-to-understand instruction manuals for the use of radar equipment for the US Navy. He taught shop at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, developed the glass designer training program for Steuben Glass in Corning, NY, and later was head of the Department of Graphic Design at Rhode Island School of Design. He was Art Director for Pilgrim Press/United Church during the 1960's and subsequently had his own design company in Boston.
An outspoken liberal, he marched in Washington DC in the 1930's for Social Security, and against Nazi anti-Semitism before the outbreak of WW II. At Pilgrim Press in the 1960's, he supported the publication of works by liberation theologians and antiwar activists including the Berrigan brothers, Harvey Cox, and Sister Corita. His book "The Movement Toward a New America," a collage of writings about the ongoing American revolution by Goodman, received an AIGA 50 Best Books Award in 1970.
When he retired to the Cape in 1977 at age 65, he became the art director at the Cape Cod Conservatory in West Barnstable, and he taught printmaking and lithography there and at the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich. He was also active in the conception of the Cape Museum of Fine Arts.
In his life he provided support and inspiration for artists, writers, thinkers, philosophers, poets, musicians, and students, and counted among his close personal friends several Nobel prize winners and numerous internationally known writers and artists. He was a gifted teacher who made himself accessible to all people and continued to evolve throughout his life.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Martha Tanner of Foster, RI, sons Joachim Pfeufer of Nantes, France and Eric Pfeufer of Cambridge, MA, 16 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, 68 Rte. 134, S. Dennis MA 02660, or Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Rte. 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Frances Audrey Probst, 78

Osterville - Frances Audrey Probst, 78, a longtime resident of Westbrook, Conn., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital.
Born on Staten Island, N.Y., Ms. Probst graduated from New Dorp High School. She was the first woman underwriter for CIGNA Insurance Company and enjoyed an eventful career.
She was a longtime summer resident of Osterville until five years ago when she moved to live there full time.
She is survived by a sister, A. Lois Freis of Carolina Shores, N.C.; and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Dr. Joseph N. Russo II, 81

Osterville - Dr. Joseph N. Russo II, 81, an obstetrician and gynecologist who delivered more than 20,000 babies in his 40-year career, died Feb. 14, 2001 at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.
He was the husband of Rosemary T. (Thayer) Russo, who died in December. They were married for nearly 56 years.
Born in Hartford, Conn., Dr. Russo graduated from the Loomis School in 1937, from Trinity College with a bachelor's degree in 1941 and from the University of Vermont College of Medicine with a medical degree in 1945. He married in 1944.
He served in the Army Medical Corps as a captain from 1945 to 1948 in the Philippines, and later at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington , D.C.
Dr. Russo was active in community affairs in Hartford and Osterville. He served as corporator for Newington Hospital for Crippled Children, trustee of the Heublein Medical Foundation and the Ella T. Grasso Foundation, Connecticut state police surgeon from 1962 to 1985 and a member of the Hartford Club and Farmington Country Club.
A longtime Osterville resident, he was a member of the Wampanoag Country Club, Wianno Club, Wianno Yacht Club and the Oyster Harbors Club, where he was on the board of governors from 1976 to 1985. He was president of the Oyster Harbors Property Owners Association in 1985.
He is survived by four sons, Joseph N. Russo III of Freeport, Bahamas, and Nicholas J. Russo II of Osterville, Daniel P. Russo of Middletown, Conn., and Frank T. Russo of Osterville; five grandchildren; and two nephews.
A funeral service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hartford County Medical Scholarship Fund, c/o Hartford County Medical Association, 515 Highland Ave., Cheshire, CT 06410.

Eleanor L. Starck, 70

Glenncliff, N.H. - Eleanor L. Starck, 70, formerly of the Cape, died Jan. 18, 2001 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon, N.H.
Born and raised in Centerville, she was a graduate of Barnstable High School and worked in the former Grant's Department Store in Hyannis for many years.
She was a member of the South Congregational Church in Centerville.
Miss Starck moved to Louden, N.H., and later to Glencliff, N.H.
She is survived by a sister, Frances A. Lada of Lincoln, R.I.; a brother, Russell Starck of Watertown; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were private.

Edith Alberta Travers, 86

Osterville - Edith Alberta (McAlister) Travers, 86, of Osterville, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2001 at Falmouth Hospital after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Thomas Travers, who died in 1987. She was also the former wife of Ernest Marino.
Mrs. Travers was born in Brockton and raised and educated in Brockton and Avon schools. She was employed in sales by Kay Jewelry in Brockton. She retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. in 1975 following 20 years of service.
Mrs. Travers had worked as a home health aide in Little Compton, R.I., where she lived for 18 years before moving to Osterville in 1988. She was a member of the Unitarian Church of Barnstable, and she loved her family, friends and church.
Surviving are a daughter, Leah Benton of Osterville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a niece.
A memorial service was held at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
