Edgar F. Tobey Sr., 82
Santuit - Edgar F. Tobey Sr., 82, a resident of Santuit, died Feb. 28, 2001, at his home after a long illness.
He was the husband of Cecelia Correia-Tobey for 55 years.
Born and raised in Mashpee, Mr. Tobey lived in Santuit since 1955.
A first sergeant in the Army during World War II, serving in Europe, he was honorably discharged and the recipient of numerous decorations and citations.
Prior to becoming a Jehovah's Witness, Mr. Tobey was an active member of the Mashpee Wampanoag and a member of several social clubs. He was a retired carpenter.
An avid card player, he also enjoyed fishing in Mashpee waters, golfing, camping with his family.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Edgar Tobey Jr. of Centerville and Marty Tobey of Malden; eight daughters, Sharon Kennedy, Debra DeBarros, Cecelia Gomes and Michelle Russell, all of Hyannis, Norene Smith and Laura Miranda, both of Dennis, Vanessa Mendes of Mashpee and Stephanie Roderick of Santuit; a stepson, Erroll Newcomb of Mashpee; two brothers, Everett Tobey of Falmouth and Kenneth Tobey of Mashpee; two sisters, Nina Lopes of Mashpee and Helen Johnson of Vineyard Haven; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late Ellery Tobey.
A memorial service was celebrated at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills. Burial was private.

Richard 'Dan' Van Steen, 83
South Yarmouth - Richard "Dan" Van Steen, 83, a former resident of Hyannis, died March 2, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital.
He was the husband of Elizabeth (Matthes) Van Steen.
Born in Tarrytown, N.Y., Mr. Van Steen was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown. After high school, he began a 39-year career in the inventory department at General Motors in Tarrytown. He retired in 1974 and moved to Hyannis. He moved to South Yarmouth in 1981.
Mr. Van Steen was a member of the Tarrytown Dad's Club, Christ Church and the Washington Engine Fire Department in Tarrytown, and St. David's Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth. A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard C. Van Steen of Tarrytown, N.Y., and Charles W. Van Steen of Shoreview, Minn.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were private.

James J. Barron III, 26
New York City - James J. Barron III, 26, who leaves family on Cape Cod, died March 2, 2002, at Cabrini Medical Center in New York City.
Mr. Barron was born in Hyannis. A former resident of Southborough, he graduated from Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough in 1993 and from the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1997. He was then employed at Archon Group in Irving, Texas , before moving to New York City and working for McManus and Miles. He was currently enrolled in a master's degree program at New York University. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity at Tulane.
Surviving are his parents, Anne (Ingle) Barron of Marlborough and James J. Barron Jr. of West Yarmouth; a sister, Jessica Barron of San Francisco; his paternal grandmother, Eleanor Barron of Pocasset; and several aunts and uncles.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Matthew's Church in Southborough. Burial followed in Forestvale Cemetery
in Hudson.

Winthrop N. 'Bo' Bassett, 80
Cummaquid - Winthrop Nelson "Bo" Bassett, 80, a resident of Cummaquid, died March 3, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Carolina Rose Bassett for 55 years.
Born and educated in Brewster, Mr. Bassett attended Rutgers University.
He served for four years in the Army Air Corps in Colorado. He was supervisor of overhead distribution for the former New Bedford Gas & Edison Light Co., Cape & Vineyard Division.
Mr. Bassett was a life member of the NRA and enjoyed hunting, fishing and shellfishing. An avid gardener, he was well-known locally for his vegetables.
He was a direct descendant of William and Elizabeth Bassett, who sailed to Plymouth on Nov. 9, 1621, on the ship the Fortune, arriving just a few weeks after the first Thanksgiving.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Cliff Bassett of South Yarmouth and Kim Bassett of Cummaquid; two daughters, Debra Sprague and Linda Harrington, both of West Yarmouth; a brother, Harry "Bud" Bassett of Ellsworth, Maine, and Florida; three sisters, Evelyn Herald and Marge Lee, both of South Yarmouth; and Gene Boswell of Norfolk, Va.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held in Evergreen Cemetery
in Harwich.

Poppy D. Chapman
Hyannis - Poppy D. (Diacoumakos) Chapman, a longtime resident of Hyannis, died Feb. 25, 2002, in Florida after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Albert B. Chapman, who died in 1997. They had been married for 57 years following a courtship that began as teenagers while working at the old Mayflower restaurant in Hyannis.
Mrs. Chapman was born, raised and educated in New Bedford. She moved to Hyannis in 1937 and worked at the East Bay Lodge in Osterville for many years.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafts and carrying on old family traditions.
Mrs. Chapman is survived by one daughter, Arlene G. Stoker of Hyannis; one sister, Nike Alvos of Webster; two grandsons, Christopher Huntington of Centerville and Dennis Huntington of Melbourne, Fla.; two great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery
in Bourne at a later date.
David P. deMelo, 70
Osterville - David P. deMelo, 70, of Osterville, died March 7, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Alice (Tenreiro) deMelo.
Mr. deMelo was born and raised in Sao Miguel, Azores. He emigrated to the United States in 1955 and settled in New Bedford.
He worked as a carpenter for several years before joining his brothers in forming a family-owned business, deMelo Brothers Landscaping. After his retirement from the family business, he worked as a self-employed landscaper.
He moved to Cape Cod in 1966 because he loved the Cape's charm. He loved shellfishing and surfcasting as well as long rides and puzzle books.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Pereira of Centerville and Ann Marie deMelo of Osterville; a brother, Jose deMelo of Hyannis; a sister, Hortensia Medeiros of Hyannis; and two grandchildren.
A funeral mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Assumption Church in Osterville. Burial followed in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery
in Centerville.
Joseph H. Flacks, 91
Hyannis - Joseph H. Flacks, 91, a resident of Hyannis, died March 6, 2002, at Eagle Pond Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
He was the husband of Rose (Wershil) Flacks for 58 years.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Flacks retired to Dade County, Fla., and recently moved to Hyannis.
He graduated from City College of New York in 1933 and was a World War II veteran.
After a long career in the publishing industry, Mr. Flacks was active in Dade County civic affairs and a leader of the Gray Panthers, an elder advocacy organization. He was a gentle man with a sharp wit.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Andrew Flacks and Hank Flacks; and two grandchildren.
A private graveside service was held in Massachusetts National Cemetery
in Bourne. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
John L. Fleming, 87
New Smyrna Beach, Fla. - John L. Fleming, 87, a resident of New Smyrna Beach and former summer resident of Centerville, died March 4, 2002, at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach.
Born in Belmont, Mr. Fleming moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1984 from Tenafly, N.J.
He maintained a summer home in Centerville from 1975 to 1995.
He was also owner of Delicia Cookie Co. in the Bronx and worked at Continental Foods and Birdseye Foods in the New York and New Jersey areas.
Mr. Fleming graduated from Danvers High School, where he was a six-letter athlete inducted into the school's Hall of Fame. He attended LaSalle Military Academy, Long Island and Georgetown University on athletic scholarships in football, hockey, and track.
He was a longtime scratch handicap golfer and captained the Rhode Island State Golf Team. His memberships included the Metacomet Country Club in Providence, R.I.; Westchester Country Club, Harrison, N.Y.; Hyannis Golf Club; Knickerbocker Country Club, Tenafly, N.J.; Spruce Creek Country Club, Port Orange, Fla.; and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, John L. Fleming Jr. of Westport, Conn.; a daughter, Susan Miltner of Palm City, Fla.; a brother, Richard Fleming of Danvers; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Hyannis and New Smyrna Beach.
