Sylvia Abel Furber, 85

Newton - Sylvia Abel Furber, 85, of Newton and Cotuit, died June 2, 2001, in Lasell Village, Newton.
She was the wife of the late Allan Furber, who died in 1988. They were married for 46 years.
She was born and raised in Boston. She earned a master's degree in English literature from Boston University, and for four decades taught English in the school systems of Boston and Brockton. She also served as an adjunct faculty member at Emerson College, Fisher College, Stonehill College and Massasoit Community College.
Later in life, she turned to clinical social work and became a licensed therapist. She maintained an active private and group practice. She also provided training in psychology to nurses. Mrs. Furber remained professionally active into her 80s.
She helped found one of the original chapters of the National Organization for Women and was named to Who's Who Among American Women.
For the past 21 years, she divided her time between a winter home in Delray Beach, Fla., and a summer home in Cotuit before moving last summer to Lasell Village in Newton.
She leaves a daughter, Joan Furber Kalafatas; a son, Richard Furber; a dear friend, Laurens Van Dyck; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland.

Emilio Richard Gallo, 88

Centerville - Emilio Richard Gallo, 88, a resident of Centerville, died June 3, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Mardell (Dougherty) Gallo for 61 years.
Born in Providence, R.I., he was raised and educated in the Greater Providence area.
Mr. Gallo was in the entertainment business for more than 60 years. Known by the name of Dick Martin, he was a master of ceremonies, tap dancer, comedian and musician.
Among his many contributions, he performed with the USO in this country and abroad. In the 1960s, he performed in the last of the burlesque shows, touring in 27 different cities. He also performed in the Ann Corio Show for three years during the 1970s.
After coming to Cape Cod in the late 1950s, he performed with the Barnstable Comedy Club. Throughout the years, he continued to entertain, and most recently put on shows for senior citizens throughout New England.
His many hobbies included gardening, sign painting and drawing.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Bob Gallo and Rick Gallo, both of Centerville; two daughters, Ginger Robinson of Cotuit and Adrienne Whiteley of Osterville; three sisters, Viola Rossi, Mary Trombetti and Josephine Paiano, all of Rhode Island; a brother, Pat Gallo of Rhode Island; several grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to the Cape and Islands Unit, American Cancer Society, 1115 W. Chestnut St., Brockton, MA 02301.

James R. Malko, 44

Cape Coral, Fla. - James R. Malko, 44, formerly of Osterville, died May 22, 2001, at his home in Cape Coral.
He was the husband of Cynthia Aho Malko.
Mr. Malko was a native of Salem and a graduate of Salem High School. He worked for 12 years at General Electric in Lynn and was the owner of Residential Landscaping, Nashua, N.H., and Seaside Landscaping, Osterville. Mr. Malko loved riding his Harley-Davidson, baseball and traveling.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Bryan James Malko of Cape Coral; a daughter, Deanna Malko of Medford; a stepdaughter, Tamara Paul of Cape Coral; a brother, Joseph Malko of Newburyport., two sisters, Janet Urbanski of Leominster and Lois Malko of Amesbury; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside celebration of his life was held in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem.

John H. Milne, 72

Hyannis - John H. Milne, 72, of Hyannis, a native of Osterville, died June 5, 2001, in Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South Yarmouth.
He was the husband of Anni G. Milne of Hyannis for 50 years.
Mr. Milne was born in Osterville and graduated from Barnstable High School.
He served for six years in the Air Force and was stationed for three years in Germany. After leaving the Air Force, Mr. Milne served in the National Guard for five years.
He was a registered professional land surveyor, and owned and operated All Cape Engineering in Hyannis for many years.
He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed volunteering with the Boy Scouts.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Brian C. Milne of Emily, Minn., and J. Gregory Milne of Hyannis; a sister, Esther Milne Williams of Marstons Mills; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in the Federated Church of Hyannis.

Gregory Stephen O'Leary, 47

Hyannis - Gregory Stephen O'Leary, 47, of Hyannis, died at home June 6, 2001, after a brief illness.
He was born in St. Louis, Mo., and moved to the Cape at age 2. He was a self-employed roofing contractor. He loved tennis, literature and music.
Mr. O'Leary is survived by two sons, Robert and Shane O'Leary, both of Coventry, R.I.; a daughter, Jessica O'Leary of Marstons Mills; three sisters, Linda Edwards and Sherry Gonzalez, both of St. Louis, Mo., and Jeanne Anderson-Plourde of California; his parents, Robert and Virginia O'Leary of St. Louis, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in the New Life Christian Center in Dennisport.
Memorial donations may be made to a fund for Gregory S. O'Leary, c/o Cape Cod Five, 1620 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

Samuel T. Preston, 82

Craigville - Samuel Thomas Preston, 82, a longtime resident of Craigville, died June 3, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Jeanne Preston.
He retired from A.G. Spaulding Sporting Goods in 1974 and remained an avid tennis player.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Carol P. Van Gerven of Pembroke and Bonnie P. Sallows of Florida; and a granddaughter.

James T. 'Bud' Riley, 78

Cotuit - Dr. James T. "Bud" Riley, 78, of Cotuit died of a stroke June 5, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.
He was the husband of Doris (Holmberg) Riley of Cotuit, to whom he was married for 51 years.
He was born and raised in Burlington, Vt. He attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, where he was a member of the 1947 NCAA Championship Basketball team.
He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
He graduated from the University of Vermont Medical School in 1951. He was a family practitioner in Natick for 17 years, and director of emergency services at St. John's Hospital in Lowell for 18 years.
He retired to Cotuit and belonged to Woodland Golf Club and Oyster Harbors Golf Club.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three daughters, Joyce Davis and Ellen Bayles, both of Scituate, and Barbara Riley of Belmont; and five grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Christopher J. Riley.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Christ the King Church in Mashpee. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital, Gillette Center for Women's Cancer, 100 Blossom St., Box 120, Boston, MA 02114.

Sally H. Walzer, 95

Hyannis - Sally H. Walzer, 95, a longtime resident of Hyannis, died June 8, 2001, at University Hospital, Madison, Wis.
She was the wife of Joseph Walzer, who died in 1981.
Mrs. Walzer was born in Wallingford, Conn., and recalled riding a horse and buggy to a one-room elementary school. After high school in New Haven and courses at New York University, she worked as a legal secretary at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York.
She moved from New York to Johnstown, Pa., to Chicago, and then to Hyannis. In Hyannis, she served as secretary to the rabbi and the congregation at the Cape Cod Synagogue. She also served as a member of the synagogue's board and its membership and building committees. She was an avid writer.
Mrs. Walzer is survived by a daughter, Judith Leavitt of Madison, Wis.; a son, Michael Walzer of Princeton, N.J.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was at Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis. Burial followed in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
