James S. Haskell, 88

Buzzards Bay - James S. Haskell, 88, of Buzzards Bay, died June 14, 2001, at Sippican Healthcare Center after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Gladys E. (Harrison) Haskell.
Mr. Haskell was born in Auburn, Maine, and during his career lived in various parts of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, while managing local Woolworth stores.
He was the manager of Kmart in Hyannis for nine years. He retired to Buzzards Bay 16 years ago.
He was also the proprietor of the Cape Cod Donut Shop in Mattapoisett.
Mr. Haskell was a member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church. He was a member of Tranquil Masonic Lodge in Auburn, Maine, for 63 years. He enjoyed bowling.
In his youth, he was an avid skier who represented Maine in skiing events in Canada, New England and Lake Placid, N.Y.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Edmund Haskell and Gilbert Haskell, both of Bryant Pond, Maine; a daughter, Barbara Haskell of Wareham; a stepdaughter, Carol Zaslona of Fairhaven; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was the father of the late James S. Haskell Jr.
A memorial service was held at Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals. Burial was private.

Barbara B. Lawrence, 81

Little Silver, N.J. - Barbara B. (Hale) Lawrence, 81, who once owned a cottage in Cotuit and spent many summers on Cape Cod, died June 13, 2001, at her home in Little Silver.
She was the wife of Vincent Lawrence for 36 years.
Born in Brookline, Mass., Mrs. Lawrence summered on Cape Cod during her childhood. In recent years, she lived in Tequesta, Fla., during the winters, and in New Jersey during the summers.
A homemaker, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, the Arthritis Foundation of Monmouth County in New Jersey, Women's Club of Red Bank and country clubs in both New Jersey and Florida. She enjoyed sailing.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Rod Verner of Tequesta, Fla.; two daughters, Linda Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Valerie Hodgetts of Boulder, Colo.; three stepdaughters, Cindy Tidwell of Miami, Fla., Kathy Lawrence of Miami Beach, Fla., and Michelle Moreland of Sanford, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill in Red Bank, N.J.
Memorial donations may be made to Family and Children Services, 1400 State Highway 35, Oakhurst, NJ 07755.

Alice G. Lewis, 74

Hyannis - Alice G. (Lampert) Lewis, 74, of Hyannis died June 20, 2001, in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis following a long illness.
She was the wife of Robert F. Lewis of Hyannis. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this year.
She was born in Gardner, and educated in the Gardner Catholic schools.
Mrs. Lewis was a front desk clerk and bookkeeper at the Hyannis Inn Motel for 20 years.
She enjoyed gardening, and loved to go clamming with her sister-in-law, Bertha Lampert.
In addition to her husband, she leaves two sons, Robert A. Lewis of Hyannis and Wesley R. Lewis of Boston; three sisters, Patricia Boudreau and Barbara Monette, both of Gardner, and Mary Gallant of Kansas; a brother, Thomas Lampert of Gardner; two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to VNA of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660; or to the Hyannis Fire Rescue, 95 High School St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Paul J. Noonan, 89

Cotuit - Paul J. Noonan, a store owner and substance abuse counselor from Cotuit, died June 21, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was 89.
He was the husband of Bernice (Lucey) Noonan, who died in 1995.
Mr. Noonan was born in Whitman and lived for many years in West Bridgewater. He retired to Cape Cod in 1972.
He spent most of his career working in retail sales. He owned McCarthy's Department Store in Brockton. He then became a pioneer in the discount store industry, managing a staff of more than 100 employees.
Upon his retirement in 1972, Mr. Noonan began a second career as a substance abuse counselor for the elderly.
He was a licensed social worker and worked for Elder Services of Cape Cod & Islands. He was twice recognized by the Massachusetts Legislature.
An outdoorsman, Mr. Noonan enjoyed saddle horse riding and was a former president of the Massachusetts Bantam Club.
He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Powell of Duxbury and Sanibel, Fla.; Sally Ratchford of Chester, Conn.; and Marylou Noonan of Cambridge; two sons, John T. Noonan of Cotuit and Paul D. Noonan of Cotuit; a brother, Leo T. Noonan of Cotuit; and four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Chapel in Mashpee Commons.

Louis J. Panesis, 82

Hyannis - Louis James Panesis, 82, a resident of Hyannis, died June 20, 2001, at his home.
He was the husband of Mary (Thalhammer) Panesis, who died in 1980.
Mr. Panesis was born in Hyannis and graduated from Barnstable High School in 1939.
During World War II, he served with the Army in the European theater with the 16th General Hospital.
Offered a Purple Heart for injuries he received during a bomb raid, he declined the medal, as he felt the sacrifices made by many other fellow soldiers were more deserving of the honor.
After the war, Mr. Panesis worked in the family business, J. L. Panesis & Co., a soda bottling and wholesale produce company.
He ran the bottling plant until 1960, when his father retired.
He then joined the Coca-Cola Co. of Cape Cod as its production manager until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of the Bass River Golf Club, playing for many years in a group called Dawn Patrol, and participating in many tournaments.
Even after fragile health kept him from his golf game, he was a familiar figure at the club, often accompanied by his dog Lady.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are four daughters, Dianna L. Panesis of South Yarmouth, Nancy P. Benton of Marstons Mills, Georgia P. Catino of Malden and Robina E. Panesis of Hyannis; a son, Paul Thalhammer of Hyannis; a sister, Helen George of Centerville; a brother, Peter J. Panesis of Sandwich; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral was held at the Hallett Funeral Home in South Yarmouth, with burial in Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Catherine M. Rasicot, 85

Hyannis - Catherine Mary (Devine) Rasicot, 85, of Hyannis, died June 19, 2001, at her son's home in Yarmouthport.
She was the wife of the late Raymond J. Rasicot Sr.
Mrs. Rasicot was born in Framingham. She was a graduate of Framingham High School and attended Boston Conservatory of Music. During her active career, Mrs. Rasicot was a police officer in Framingham, and worked for many years as a waitress at Giovanni's Restaurant in Framingham. She was a secretary for Digital Equipment Corp. in Hudson until her retirement in 1981.
Surviving are a son, Raymond J. Rasicot of Yarmouthport; a daughter, Margaret Youngling of Davidsonville, Md.; a sister, Margaret Foster of Holliston; two grandchildren; and several nieces and a nephew.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Pius X Church in South Yarmout, with burial in Woodside Cemetery in Yarmouthport.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Winifred Mary Zschau, 92

Hyannis - Winifred Mary (Dent) Zschau, 92, of Hyannis, died June 7, 2001, at the Greenery in Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late William H. Zschau.
Mrs. Zschau was born in Holyoke and raised and educated in Turners Falls, where she graduated from high school.
A homemaker and longtime resident of Hyannis, Mrs. Zschau was past president of the League of Women Voters in Brockton and secretary of the Hyannis Yacht Club. She enjoyed music, reading and playing the piano.
Surviving are two sons, William Zschau of Lewiston, Maine, and James Zschau of Hyannis; a sister, Marguerite Spencer of Greenfield; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Baltimore at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association, P.O. Box 1211, Dennis, MA 02638-1211.
