William Edward Burtis, 78

Mashpee - William Edward Burtis, 78, of Mashpee, died Sept. 6, 2001, at his home.
He was the husband of Nancy J. (Winalski) Burtis. He was also the husband of the late Jean Cobb Burtis.
Mr. Burtis was born in Annapolis, Md., and graduated from Annapolis High School. A World War II Navy veteran, he was stationed in French Morocco from 1940 to 1944. He was also stationed at Woods Hole as chief bosun in charge of crash boats assigned to rescue downed flyers. He was discharged in 1946.
Mr. Burtis was married in 1946, and was employed at the Tassinaris Garage in Falmouth as chief mechanic from 1946 to 1950. From 1950 to 1957, he worked for the Falmouth Fire Department as deputy chief and master mechanic.
He was a foreman for the Falmouth Marine Railways from 1957 to 1969. He then taught in the Upper Cape Vocational Technical School and Barnstable School (formerly Barnstable Vocational Technical School) from 1969 to 1980. Most recently, he had been owner and president of the Little River Boatyard in Mashpee.
Mr. Burtis was a member of the Mashpee Sons of Italy and was a town meeting member in Falmouth. He enjoyed collecting coins, creating metal etchings, fishing and boating.
Surviving besides his wife are four sons, William Cobb Burtis of North Falmouth, Jonathan A. Burtis of Mashpee, Mark C. Burtis of Mashpee, and Adam Burtis of East Falmouth; two daughters, Mary Taylor Burtis of Ipswich and Sarah Ellen Burtis of East Falmouth; two brothers, David and James Burtis, both of Deale, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was also the father of the late Michael Burtis.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Patrick's Church in Falmouth. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Tarsia 'Sue' Christopulos, 78

Osterville - Tarsia "Sue" Christopulos, 78, of Osterville, died unexpectedly Sept. 2, 2001, at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine, while vacationing with her family.
She was born and educated in Boston and was a graduate of Framingham State Teachers College.
Mrs. Christopulos taught elementary grades in Ashland, Melrose and Brookline in the 1940s. She was an active member of the Greek Cathedral in Boston, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and a Girl Scout leader.
She moved to Buzzards Bay in 1949 and taught in Bourne and Wareham. After her retirement from teaching in 1985, she assisted her daughter Jeanne in establishing The Physical Therapy Center in Osterville, and worked there for many years.
She had a lifelong love of music and frequently attended concerts. An excellent cook, she particularly enjoyed baking Greek pastries. She also enjoyed traveling to Europe and visiting relatives in Crete, Greece. In recent years, she was a volunteer at the Osterville Historical Society.
She is survived by two daughters, Anne Christopulos of Mashpee and Jeanne Egan of West Hyannisport; and two grandsons.
A funeral was held at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville.

James A. Coyne, 77

Port St. Lucie, Fla. - James A. Coyne, 77, a resident of Port St. Lucie for the past 12 years and formerly of Centerville, died Sept. 2, 2001, in Florida.
He was the husband of Evelyn (Hall) Coyne since 1972.
Mr. Coyne was born in North Brookfield. He had a construction remodeling business on Cape Cod and lived in Centerville for many years. After his retirement in 1989, he and his wife began to winter in Florida.
His hobbies included skeet shooting. He won the Canadian National Championship and became Massachusetts State Champion in 1976.
He also enjoyed sailing and was a member of the Hyannis Yacht Club.
Besides his wife of 29 years, he is survived by three daughters, Maureen Dwyer of Centerville, Kathleen Coyne of Scituate, Mass., and Deborah Coyne of North Anson, Maine; a son, James M. Coyne of Lincoln, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Sweet of Framingham, Mass., and Judith Fenner of Brewster; a stepson, Robert Fenner of Marstons Mills; and 17 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Port St. Lucie. A second memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at the First Baptist Church in Hyannis.

Bertha Anna Giffels, 85

East Sandwich - Bertha Anna Giffels, 85, a resident of East Sandwich, died Aug. 12, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.
Miss Giffels was born in West Roxbury. After graduating from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, she taught at the Long Lane School for Girls in Middletown, Conn.
During World War II, Miss Giffels served in the Marine Corps and then earned a master's degree in art from Syracuse University in 1948.
She taught art in the Barnstable public schools for many years until her retirement in the 1970s.
Miss Giffels summered at her Cambridge, Vt., farmhouse.
She was known for her caring and willingness to help anyone in need, for her many polished skills, including the art of jewelry-making, and her vast knowledge of flowers, birds, animals, music, antiques, collecting, gardening, crafts, travel and the performing arts.
She is survived by a brother, Hubert Giffels of Eagle Point, Ore., and many friends of all ages.
Remains will be placed in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Cambridge, Vt.

James A. Lebel, 72

Mashpee - James A. Lebel, 72, of Mashpee, died Sept. 7, 2001, at his home on Monomoscoy Island.
Mr. Lebel grew up in Osterville. He was a contractor for many years in the family business, John B. Lebel & Sons of Osterville. In later years, he owned and operated a recycling center known as Lebco Enterprises in Marstons Mills.
He loved gardening and sailing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. A kind, gentle and loving person, during his lifetime he supported many charities involving children, including missionaries in Haiti and Maryknoll priests in Guatemala.
Surviving are a son, Douglas W. Lebel of Centerville; three daughters, M. Rebecca Lebel of Mashpee, Carol A. O'Brien of West Barnstable, and Deborah Hagan of Medford, N.J.; two brothers, John S. Lebel of Osterville and Paul T. Lebel of Osterville; a sister, Marie Aylmer of Hyannis; four granddaughters; and his former wife, Carol M. Lebel of Fort Myers, Fla.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Mildred Lewis, 87

Osterville - Mildred (Terhune) Lewis, 87, a resident of Osterville, died Sept. 1, 2001, at Cape Regency Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Centerville.
She was the wife of the late Philip Lewis. They were married for 65 years.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Lexington and attended Pierce Secretary School. She was a medical secretary for doctors in Lexington and Hyannis. She was also a Cape Cod Hospital volunteer for 22 years.
She is survived by a son, Randy Lewis of Lake Worth, Fla.

Sally Davis Marchand, 72

Barnstable - Sally Davis (Maraspin) Marchand, 72, of Barnstable, died Sept. 2, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Richard N. Marchand.
Born in Medford, she graduated from Barnstable High School in 1946 and from Jackson College of Tufts University in Medford in 1950.
Mrs. Marchand was a longtime resident of Barnstable and lived in the historic 1797 Maraspin Homestead, which has been in her family for more than 150 years.
A longtime member of the Barnstable Yacht Club, she was also a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable, Friends of Sturgis Library, Barnstable Civic Association, Barnstable Land Trust and the Children of the American Revolution.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Dr. Richard D. Marchand of Barnstable; a daughter, Suzanne Marchand Cooney of Wayland; two sisters, Dorothy L. Vetterling of Barnstable and Anne M. Kittredge of Hyannis; a granddaughter; and several nieces.
A funeral service was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable. Burial was in Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable.

Daniel H. McEvoy, 57

Tucson, Ariz. - Daniel H. McEvoy, 57, a former resident of Hyannis and Osterville, died at his home Aug. 27, 2001, after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Margaret M. McEvoy.
Mr. McEvoy was born in Hyannis, raised in Osterville and in 1962, graduated from Barnstable High School. In 1967, he graduated from American International College in Springfield and moved to Tucson, where he entered the real estate business.
At the time of his death, he was a vice president at Coldwell Banker and former executive vice president of Tucson Realty and Trust. He was a member and two-time past president of the Tucson Board of Realtors and active in Tucson civic affairs.
An avid sportsman, Mr. McEvoy enjoyed tennis, golf and fly fishing. At Barnstable High School, he was a prominent hockey player and captain of the 1961 championship football team.
Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Shawn McEvoy of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Holly McEvoy, of Flagstaff; his parents, William P. and Eileen E. McEvoy of Osterville; one brother, James M. McEvoy of Centerville; three sisters, Jessica M. Trimble, also of Centerville, Mary M. Archer of Hyannis and Maggie M. Cooperrider of Marstons Mills; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at Our Lady of the Assumption in Osterville with burial to follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville or to the charity of one's choice.
