Brian D. Sweeney, 38

Barnstable - Brian D. Sweeney, 38, a resident of Barnstable and formerly of Spencer, died Sept. 11, 2001, aboard hijacked United Airlines Flight 175, which struck the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
He was the husband of Julie L. (Busa) Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney was born in Worcester and lived most of his life in Spencer before moving to many locations with the Navy. He also lived in Marlborough for two years, and for the last two months in Barnstable.
He was a 1981 graduate of David Prouty High School in Spencer, where he was co-captain of the football team and on the track team. He received a football scholarship to Boston University, played on the varsity squad for four years and earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications in 1986. He received additional education in Navy postgraduate schools.
Mr. Sweeney was a lieutenant in the Navy and a Desert Storm veteran, protecting the no-fly zones. He was a radar intercepting officer aboard F-14 Tomcat fighter planes in the VF-211 "Bounty Hunters" squadron, serving on the USS Nimitz and USS Ranger aircraft carriers. He graduated at the head of his class at the Naval Officers Training School in Pensacola, Fla.
He was a staff instructor at the Navy's prestigious Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, Calif., from 1995 to 1996, and a staff member for the Tomcat Strike Fighter Weapons School in 1993.
He was also squadron avionics/weapons division officer from 1991 to 1993 and squadron weapons training/tactics development officer from 1993 to 1995.
He worked for a variety of private-sector aeronautical companies in recent years, including Lockheed Martin Corp., Spectratek Corp. and Horizons Technology. Since March, he was a systems consultant for the Department of Defense and aeronautics industry at Brandes Associates in Los Angeles.
Besides his wife of two years, he is survived by his parents, Leonard H. and Luise A. (Mulhall) Sweeney of Spencer; two brothers, Kevin F. Sweeney and John P. Sweeney, both of Spencer; a sister, Anne E. Sweeney of Spencer; his maternal grandmother, Rachel V. Demers of Spencer; and aunts and uncles.
A celebration of his life was held at the David Prouty High School Athletic Field in Spencer.

Irwin F. 'Dutch' Von Iderstein, 79

The Villages, Fla.- Irwin F. "Dutch" Von Iderstein, 79, formerly of Cotuit, died Sept. 12, 2001, at his home in The Villages after a long illness.
He was the husband of Joanne (Cummings) Von Iderstein.
Born in Rockland, Mass., he was raised and educated in Hingham, Mass.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Baltimore and receiving 10 bronze medals.
Mr. Von Iderstein retired from Helix Technology and was a member of the 25 Years Club.
He was an accomplished artist and an avid golfer and a former member of the Cummaquid Golf Club. He was also a member of the Simon W. Robinson Lodge, AF&AM in Lexington, receiving his 50-year pin in 1993.
Mr. Von Iderstein was one of the founders of the Prostate Cancer Support Group on Cape Cod, which has grown to include other areas in Massachusetts.
Besides his wife of 36 years, he is survived by a son, Douglas Von Iderstein of Duxbury; a daughter, Verna Mulready of Hanover; and three brothers, Irl Von Iderstein of Scituate, Nathan Lee Von Iderstein of Palm Desert, Calif. and Ernst Von Iderstein of Hanover.
Mr. Von Iderstein was buried with full military honors in the Florida National Cemetery.

Mabel Stella Canto, 75

Harwich - Mabel Stella (Gomes) Canto, 75, a lifelong resident of Harwich, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 in Hyannis after a long illness.
Mrs. Canto was a founding member and former vice president of Legal Services of Cape Cod and the Islands. She was also a member of the Community Action Committee of Cape Cod and the Islands and Project Head Start.
She was also a member of the Harwich Junior Theatre, the Democratic town committee, the Harwich Disability Rights Committee, the Cape Verdean Multi-Cultural Club and the VFW Auxiliary of Dennisport. She was a former president of Cape United Elderly and a delegate to the state Democratic convention.
She was the recipient of numerous awards, including the NAACP's Joseph Daluz Award, the Senior Citizen of the Year Award of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, and the Honorable Deputy of Barnstable County Award. The state of Massachusetts recognized her achievements with a resolution read into the record in 1994 stating that her "actions reflected the highest principals of humanity, charity and love of one's fellow man."
She is survived by her children, Lee Canto Kelsey, John H. Canto, Theodore L. Canto Jr., Benjamin Canto, Richard Canto and Lisa Canto Nikula; her former husband, Theodore Canto Sr.; a brother, George Gomes Jr.; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday in Holy Trinity Church, Route 28, West Harwich. Burial followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Harwich.

Jessie E.R. Dunnett, 91

Hyannis - Jessie E.R. (Anderson) Dunnett, 91, a resident of Hyannis, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 at the Greenery at Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late James Dunnett.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls in 1929.
Mrs. Dunnett was a soloist for many years at various churches in the Boston and Cape Cod areas. She was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, active in various ladies organizations and a 60-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She moved to Centerville from Dorchester in 1963, wintered in Holiday, Fla., and in 1983 moved to Hyannis.
She is survived by a son, James Bruce Dunnett of Centerville; two brothers, Neil Anderson of Malden and John Anderson of Greenfield; and one granddaughter.
A memorial service was held at the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis. Burial was private.

Leo J. Kelleher Sr., 83

Osterville - Leo J. Kelleher Sr., 83, a resident of Osterville and formerly of Greenfield, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at his home.
He was the husband of Marion (Robichaud) Kelleher for 57 years.
Mr. Kelleher was born in Montague and graduated from Turners Falls High School.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was a chief petty officer aboard five different USS landing ship tanks.
After the war, he was employed by the Kelleher Construction Co., a family-owned business. He later worked for John Hancock Insurance Co. He retired from the Massachusetts Division of Employment Security after 30 years as a senior claims adjuster.
Mr. Kelleher was a senior vice commander of Scott Vetterling-Chapter 33 of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, John J. Galvin Council 133, serving as grand knight for seven years. He was chairman of the Knights' Tootsie Roll Drive for 15 years.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Church and a supporter of Holy Trinity School and Roses for Life. He was also a member of the U.S. LST Association.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters with whom he and his wife lived, Rosemary Kelleher and Karen Murphy of Osterville; a son, Leo J. Kelleher Jr. of Greenfield; two sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Dresser of Hyannis and Edna Suhl of Yarmouthport; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield, followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at Holy Trinity Church. Burial with a Navy honor detail followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Turners Falls.

Adrienne McConnell, 79

Hyannis - Adrienne (Morse) McConnell, 79, of Hyannis, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late John J. McConnell.
Mrs. McConnell was born in Nashua, N.H. She was a graduate of Nashua Business School. She worked in the circulation department of the Cape Cod Standard-Times.
She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis and was active in church organizations. She was an avid reader and supporter of the Hyannis Public Library. She enjoyed traveling and watching her grandsons play sports.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Everson of Marstons Mills; a sister, Mary Stapleton of Ocala, Fla.; and three grandsons.
She was also the mother of the late John J. "Jerry" McConnell.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South St. in Hyannis. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.

Charles Jaquith Meyer, 90

Austin, Tex ­ Charles Jaquith Meyer, 90, passed away Sept. 20, 2001 at his home in Austin, Tex. He was born on July 11, 1911 in Elizabeth, N.J. to Clarence and Sarah Meyer.
Besides his wife of 53 years, Edith Williams Meyer of Austin, Tex., he is survived by two sons, Charles Dee Meyer and his wife, Donna, of Hampton, N.J. and John Dorrien Meyer of Austin; and a grandson, Charles Drew Meyer of Hampton, N.J. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sally.
In their 53 years together, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer lived in Centerville; Jutland, N.J.; Paris, Tex; and Austin. While in Centerville, Mr. Meyer sold real estate and was responsible for the revival and management of the Barnstable County Fair, helping it to become the annual institution it is today. He was also a member of many civic and service organizations, a 32nd Degree Mason and a communicant of St. Mary's, St. Andrews-by-the-Sea and St. Peter's Episcopal churches.
A memorial service was held on Sept. 28 at All Saint's Episcopal Church in Austin. Memorial contributions may be made to Happy Hill Farm Academy/Home for Children, 3846 N. Highway 144, Granbury, Tex. 76048, or Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, Tex. or a charity of your choice.David Joseph O'Keefe, 83
Marstons Mills - David Joseph O'Keefe, 83, a resident of Marstons Mills, died at his home Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 after an illness.
He was the husband of Christine W. (Wooster) O'Keefe and of the late Catherine (Colerick) O'Keefe.
Mr. O'Keefe was born, raised and educated in Derby, Conn.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army with the 45th Infantry Division in Sicily, Italy, southern France and Germany.
He was employed by the Farrel Corp. in Ansonia, Conn., for a number of years and later transferred to Rochester, N.Y.
Mr. O'Keefe retired and moved to the Cape in the early 1980s, living first in Centerville and then moving to Marstons Mills 14 years ago.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, David O'Keefe and Patrick O'Keefe, both of Rochester, N.Y., Daniel O'Keefe of Philadelphia; two daughters, Elizabeth O'Keefe and Mary Seger, both of Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Evelyn Cribbins and Marguerite Cribbins, both of Shelton, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.
Burial followed in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
