Joseph P. Tyrrell, 76

Wellesley Hills - Joseph P. Tyrrell, 76, a resident of Wellesley Hills and Osterville, died Dec. 18, 2001, at his home.
He was the husband of Mary A. (Lavin) Tyrrell for 50 years.
Born in Dudley, Mr. Tyrrell graduated from Boston University in 1949 and Boston College School of Law in 1955.
During World War II, he was a second lieutenant in the Air Force, serving as a navigator.
He served at Boston Edison Co. for 37 years, retiring as executive vice president and chief financial officer in 1987. He was a member of the board of directors of Boston Edison Co. for 21 years.
He also served on the board of directors of BayBank, Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co., Community Service Stations, Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Co., Continental Resources, Massachusetts Business Development Corp. and Yankee Atomic Electric Co. He served as chairman of the board for Official Industries, Marina Industries and Public Service Company of New Hampshire.
He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association.
Mr. Tyrrell served as president and member of the board of overseers of Robert B. Brigham Hospital and was a trustee of Joslin Diabetes Foundation, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Regis College and Newton College of the Sacred Heart. He was a member of the Knights of Malta and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. He served on the audit committee of the Archdiocese of Boston and the parish counsel of St. Paul's Church in Wellesley.
An avid golfer, Mr. Tyrrell was a member of the Weston Golf Club and Oyster Harbors Club of Osterville. He was a former member of the International Golf Club in Bolton.
Mr. Tyrrell was a lifelong Notre Dame fan.
Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Ann Abely of Wellesley Hills, Patricia M. Tyrrell of North Quincy and Mary Coughlin of Wellesley; two sons, Joseph P. Tyrrell of Danville, Calif., and James R. Tyrrell of Sudbury; four sisters, Sister Mary Richard of Springfield, Sister Mary Bernice of Holyoke, Marguerite Wytrwal of Centerville and Kathleen Viscardi of Shrewsbury; and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Paul's Church in Wellesley, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery there.
Memorial donations may be made to the University of Notre Dame, Attention: Football Office, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

Harry Arnold White , 75

Bradenton, Fla. - Harry Arnold White , 75, a resident of Bradenton and Osterville, died Dec. 12, 2001, in Doctor's Hospital in Sarasota, Fla., after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Barbara E. White for 45 years.
Born in Weymouth, Mr. White attended Braintree schools. He lived in South Weymouth for 30 years before moving to Cape Cod and Florida. He was a graduate of the Apprentice School of Bethlehem Steel Co. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel of Quincy and General Ship Corporation of Boston, and was the owner of Hickey & White Realty Trust in Hingham.
Mr. White was a Navy veteran, serving aboard the USS Diamond Head during World War II.
He was a golfer and frequent traveler. He was a member of the Tara Golf and Country Club in Bradenton. He also volunteered for many years at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota, and the Melody Tent in Hyannis.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Christopher A. White of Marshfield; a daughter, Judith Wolffer of Scituate; a sister, Marion Colombi of Weymouth; a brother, David White of Walnut Creek, Calif.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at at Old South Union Church in South Weymouth.
Burial followed in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Clifton C. Bowman, 81

Hyannis - Clifton C. Bowman, 81, a veteran of World War II who leaves four children on Cape Cod, died Dec. 27, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of the late Luella Pearl Bowman.
Born in Falmouth, Mr. Bowman is described by his family as a "true Cape Codder."
He served his country as a member of the Army during World War II.
A resident of Hyannis, he later worked for the Cape Cod Times and retired from the company.
He is survived by two daughters, Judith Forrest of Dennis and Evelyn Poier of Sandwich; two sons, David Bowman of Osterville and Walter Bowman of Marstons Mills; a brother, Raymond Bowman of Marlboro; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at the National Cemetery in Bourne.

Carol Ann Chartier, 50

Marstons Mills - Carol Ann Chartier, 50, a resident of Marstons Mills, died Dec. 31, 2001, at her home after a long illness.
She was the wife of James M. Kane.
Born in Providence, R.I., Ms. Chartier graduated from the University of Rhode Island and received a master's degree and certificate of advanced graduate studies from Boston College.
She was a school psychologist and special needs teacher for Cape Cod Collaborative.
Ms. Chartier was a former board member and treasurer of the Marstons Mills Library.
Surviving besides her husband are her parents, Earl and Florence Gogan of Pawtucket, R.I.; a son, James A. Chartier; three daughters, Jessica A. Chartier, Jennie A. Chartier and Rachel A. Chartier, all of Marstons Mills; a stepson, Timothy R. Kane of Marshfield; a brother, Gordon E. Chartier of Concord; a sister, Jeannine L. Chartier of Providence; and a granddaughter.
Memorial donations may be made to Chartier Children's Memorial Fund, c/o Compass Bank, North Street and Bassett Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Francesca C. Elgee, 91

Centerville - Francesca C. (Cleverly) Elgee, 91, a resident of Centerville, died Dec. 31, 2001, at Cape Regency Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was the wife of the late Emerson Elgee.
Born in Hull, she worked as a teacher for 38 years and spent 23 years in the Barnstable school system.
Mrs. Elgee was a member of the Federated Church in Hyannis, the Hyannis State Teachers College Alumni Association, the AARP, the State, County, Municipal Employee Retirees Association and the Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club Association.
She was the mother of the late Carol Ellen Elgee.
She is survived by four nephews, Richard Cleverly, David Cleverly, Michael Cleverly and Leighton Cleverly; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
A graveside service was held in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Thomas J. Kelly Jr., 54

Centerville- Thomas J. Kelly Jr., 54, a resident of Centerville and former longtime Malden resident, died unexpectedly Jan. 1, 2002, at his home.
He was the husband of Deborah (O'Malley) Kelly.
Born and raised in Malden, Mr. Kelly graduated from Malden Catholic High School, where he excelled in football, in 1965. He then went on to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. He attended Northeastern University in Boston on a football scholarship, graduating with a degree in physical education.
Mr. Kelly was a physical education teacher and football coach at Malden High School for 25 years. He also taught and coached at Wakefield High School. Throughout these years, he played for several Park League football teams, including the Hyde Park Billy's Cowboys.
He was a resident of Centerville for the past 10 years.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Thomas J. Kelly III; a daughter, Jill Ellen Kelly of Centerville; and a sister, Patricia Kelly Jonietz of New Mexico.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

Robert P. Oberly, 70

West Barnstable - Robert P. Oberly, 70, a resident of West Barnstable, died Jan. 1. 2002, at the Hospice House in Barnstable after a long illness.
He was the husband of Linda (Henley) Oberly for 40 years.
Born in Upper Darby, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia, Mr. Oberly attended the Episcopal Academy in nearby Merion and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on a Naval ROTC scholarship.
Upon graduating in 1953, he was commissioned as an ensign and served for three years on a radar picket destroyer in the Atlantic fleet as a gunnery officer.
Upon separation from active duty at the rank of lieutenant, he attended the law school of the University of Pennsylvania and graduated cum laude in 1959. He started in practice with a small law firm in Philadelphia and eventually became a partner in the firm of Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis, specializing in trusts and estates.
He was active as a fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel before retiring in 1997 when he and his wife moved from Devon, Pa., to West Barnstable.
Before experiencing medical problems, Mr. Oberly enjoyed volunteering at the Barnstable High School and Heritage Plantation and attending services and Bible and book groups at the West Parish of Barnstable.
He was elected to the Barnstable Old King's Highway Commission and to the board of directors of Bodfish Farms, the community in which he and his wife resided.
He participated in organizing a University of Pennsylvania alumni club of the Cape and Islands and served as its first president. He was also a member of the Orleans Coffee Club.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Lisa Dunbar of Walpole, and Amy Oberly of Berwyn, Pa.; a son, Henry S. Oberly II of Malvern, Pa.; a sister, Joan Haviland of Lansing, N.Y.; and a grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in the West Parish of Barnstable meeting house in West Barnstable.
Private burial will be in the Chapel Garden of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania .

Barbara J. Rackliffe, 55

Centerville - Barbara J. (Crowley) Rackliffe, 55, a resident of Centerville, died Dec. 29, 2001, at her home after a long illness.
She was the wife of George A. Rackliffe.
Born and educated in Cambridge, Mrs. Rackliffe was a Cape resident since 1976.
She was a bookkeeper for the Casual Gourmet for 15 years.
Surviving besides her husband are her mother, Hilda (LeFort) Crowley of Hyannis; a sister, Betty Ann Crowley-Nomejko of Hyannis; and two brothers, James E. Crowley of Hyannis and Larry Crowley of Lawrence.
A memorial service was held at the Federated Church of Hyannis.
Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery.

Susan E. Smith, 37

Hyannis - Susan E. Smith, 37, a resident of Hyannis, died Jan. 4, 2002, of cancer at the Pavilion at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Born and raised in Waltham, she graduated from Waltham High School in 1982 and moved to Hyannis in 1982.
She loved to travel and traveled to Hawaii numerous times. She played and enjoyed hockey as well as other sports.
Surviving are her grandmother, Dorothy Melanson of Hyannis; a brother, Kevin Smith of Greenbush, Maine; three sisters, Sharon Smith and Cynthia Summers of Hyannis, and Deborah Gray of Harwich; two nieces; and three nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Charles H. Thomas, 74

Hyannis - Charles H. Thomas, 74, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 31, 2001, at his home.
He was the husband of Marci (House) Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a native Cape Codder, born in Hyannis. He graduated from Barnstable High School in 1945 and later served in the Army during the Korean War.
After the service, he owned several restaurants before joining the Harwich Police Department, where he was promoted to sergeant. He also worked in real estate and insurance.
He was an active member of Dennis R. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2578, where he spent more than 20 years as a bartender and bar manager. He was also a member of the Elks Club.
Mr. Thomas was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing, shellfishing, gardening, drawing and cooking. He especially loved cooking for friends and large groups. He was a co-founder of Friends of Christmas, which served local seniors for many years.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Sandra Ouellette of Meriden, N.H., and Denise Whelan of Centerville; two sisters, Lydia Schellenberg of Hollis, N.H., and Isabel Stepnik of West Hyannisport; his former wife, Arlene Thomas of South Yarmouth; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis.
Burial followed in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
