Charlotte R. Harfield, 82

Hyannis - Charlotte R. Harfield, 82, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 19, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.
Ms. Harfield was born, raised and educated in Everett, graduating from Everett High School.
She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Bucknell & Fuller in Everett.
After retiring from that job and moving to the Cape in 1984, she moved to Hyannis. She worked as a bookkeeper for Harvest of Barnstable for 14 years. She was a volunteer at the Kennedy Memorial Library and the Cape Cod Synagogue.
She is survived by a sister, Barbara H. Dubin of New Seabury; a niece, Randy Harary of Cotuit; a nephew, Richard S. Dubin of Mashpee; four grandnieces and grandnephews; and several cousins.
A graveside service was held at Tifereth Israel Cemetery in Everett.
Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

John Brunner Kelly, 77

Cummaquid - John Brunner Kelly, 77, a resident of Cummaquid, died Dec. 15, 2001, at Windsor Nursing Home in South Yarmouth after a long illness.
He was the husband of Jean (Wiseman) Kelly since 1945.
Mr. Kelly was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He was a graduate of Randall School in Hartford, Conn., where he majored in music.
During World War II, he served in the Coast Guard as a pharmacist's mate.
After the war, Mr. Kelly was a partner in the Bader Co., in Burlington, Vt., as an acoustical contractor for nearly 20 years. He then became an independent businessman working in franchise operations and later in condominium development on Cape Cod and in Texas and Colorado.
Mr. Kelly was an accomplished musician and composer, a lifelong avid skier and an active amateur inventor.
He was a member of numerous community organizations throughout his life, including the Lions Club.
He loved Norwegian elkhounds.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Andrew Kelly of New York City; a daughter, Carol Kelly Grobe of Winchester; two brothers, William W. Kelly of Fort Myers, Fla., and Louis A. Kelly of Dallas, Texas ; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Unitarian Church in Barnstable.

Cynthia J. Martin, 73

Falmouth - Cynthia J. (Wilson) Martin, 73, a resident of Falmouth, died Dec. 17, 2001, at Falmouth Hospital after a long illness.
She was the wife of Gilbert C. Martin.
Born and raised in Rutland, Vt., she lived in Hyannis and Provincetown before moving to Falmouth more than 20 years ago.
She enjoyed needlework and knitting.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Gary Martin of Lancaster, Pa., Gregg Martin of Griswold, Conn., and Glen Martin of Austin, Texas ; and six grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church in Falmouth.
Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery in Provincetown.

Irene May Pierce, 93

Hyannis - Irene May Pierce, 93, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 19, 2001, at her home.
She was the wife of the late Warren M. Pierce. They married on Christmas Day 1929 and were married for more than 47 years.
Born in New Bedford, Mrs. Pierce lived in New Bedford, Orleans, Sandwich and Hyannis.
She worked as a bookkeeper for the Buttner Co. in Sandwich, E. Henry Phinney in Hyannis, The Paddock in Hyannis and King's Department Store in Hyannis. She also operated Warren's Market with her husband in Hyannis.
She was a longtime member, musician and past Noble Grand of Willing Hand Rebekah Lodge 139, and musician on the state board of the Rebekah Assembly of Massachusetts. She was presented with the Degree of Chivalry for her contributions to her community by Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant of the Rebekah Assembly.
Mrs. Pierce was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, belonged to the Women's Fellowship, worked in the thrift shop and served as historian.
She also volunteered at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis when the first snack bar was instituted there.
She was a leader for her son's Cub Scout pack and a 4-H Club leader.
Mrs. Pierce enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage. She also wrote poetry and had several poems published.
Surviving are two sons, Dana W. Pierce of Hyannis and Brian R. Pierce of Mashpee; a daughter, Judith R. Botsford of Hyannis; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a niece; and four nephews.
A service was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis.
Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis.
Memorial donations may be made to the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601; to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to the charity of one's choice.

Eino V. Pyy, 89

Centerville - Eino V. Pyy, 89, born and raised in West Barnstable, died Dec. 24, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital.
He was the husband of Tyyne (Kahelin) Pyy.
Mr. Pyy was a caretaker for private estates, and also managed filling stations and worked for the highway department. Later, he worked for Cape Cod Community College in the maintenance department.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Gordon Pyy of Centerville; three daughters, Betty Jane Wilson of Union, Maine, Ellen Pyy of Centerville, and Nancy Johansen of Barnstable; a sister, Anne Kahelin of Hyannis; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable, MA 02668.

Diana Reid

Santa Ynez, Calif. - Diana (Warburton) Reid, a resident of Santa Ynez who was raised in Hyannis, died Dec. 15, 2001.
She was the wife of Don Reid.
Mrs. Reid was a graduate of Barnstable High School. She later graduated from New England Deaconess Hospital as a registered nurse.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Artemis Warburton; a brother, William Warburton of Bourne; a sister, June Lowther of North Ferrisburgh, Vt., and three nephews.

Catherine M. Sledjeski, 75

Hyannis - Catherine Mary (Coscia) Sledjeski, 75, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 23, 2001, at her home after a long illness.
She was the former wife of Edward W. Sledjeski.
Mrs. Sledjeski was born, raised and educated in New York City. Before her marriage, she worked as a secretary on Wall Street.
She raised her family in Euclid, Ohio, and was a member of the League of Women Voters.
She moved to Stamford, Conn., in 1961, where she worked as an administrative assistant, retiring in 1987.
Mrs. Sledjeski moved to Hyannis in 1988, where she worked part time at Marshalls in sales.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, drawing, knitting and baking.
She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Sledjeski of Tampa, Fla., and Jeanne M. Sledjeski of Hyannis; two brothers, Arthur Coscia of Tamarac, Fla., and Michael Coscia of Commack, N.Y.; a sister, Nina DeFontaine of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandson; six nieces; three nephews; five grandnieces; and a grandnephew.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Kenneth R. Smeedy, 72

Hyannis - Kenneth R. Smeedy, 72, a resident of Hyannis and a 25-year resident of West Dennis, died Dec. 24, 2001, at Windsor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in South Yarmouth.
He was the husband of Dianne (Cobb) Smeedy, who died in 1990. They were married for 40 years.
Born in Charlestown and raised in Stoneham, Mr. Smeedy graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic High School in 1947.
He moved to West Dennis in 1958 and worked for the Cape Cod Times as a press operator for more than 25 years, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Smeedy was an outstanding high school athlete and maintained his love of sports throughout his life. He was a loving grandfather and many of his grandchildren affectionately called him "Grumpy."
Surviving are a son, Wayne D. Smeedy of Hyannis; four daughters, Sharon S. Sawant of Knoxville, Tenn., Alyson Campbell of Gardner, Janine Smeedy of South Yarmouth and Michelle S. Vitale of North Harwich; two sisters, Marjorie C. Roberts of Wakefield and Evelyn Commendul of Peabody; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late James R. Smeedy.
A funeral was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in South Dennis.
Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Dennis.

Alice Eda Smith, 77

Hyannis - Alice Eda (Pederzani) Smith, 77, died unexpectedly Dec. 19, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the wife of Robert M. Smith of Hyannis for 57 years.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, loved cooking and was an avid gardener. She was a longtime member of the Federated Church of Hyannis.
She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada.
Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Sherill E. "Sherry" Sylver of Yarmouthport and Sandra L. "Sandy" Stewart of Sandwich; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
She devoted her life to her husband, two daughters and grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Cape and Islands Chapter, 2 White 's Path, South Yarmouth, MA 02664; or to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress St., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02210.

Helga C. Steffensen, 98

Kingston - Helga C. Steffensen, 98, a resident of Kingston and a former resident of Osterville, died Dec. 15, 2001, at Mayflower Nursing Home in Plymouth.
She was the wife of the late Thorvald H. Steffensen and the late Edward Archer. Born in Cromwell, Conn., Mrs. Steffensen graduated from Stow Hale High School in 1921 and from Fitchburg Normal School in 1923. She received a bachelor of science degree from Fitchburg State Teachers College in 1953.
Mrs. Steffensen lived in Stow for many years, in Osterville from 1951 to 1962, and in Kingston since 1969.
A schoolteacher for 39 years, she taught in South Acton for 41/2 years, in Stow for many years and in California for two years. She taught third grade in Osterville and Cotuit and also taught in West Boylston. Mrs. Steffensen retired in 1969.
She is survived by a sister, Emily Power of Nobleboro, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at Shepherd Funeral Home in Kingston, with burial in Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville.

Nicholas R. Tavano, 60

Centerville - Nicholas R. Tavano, 60, a resident of Centerville, died Dec. 26, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Elisa Sandra (Lenci) Tavano.
Born and raised in Revere, Mr. Tavano attended Revere High School. A tool and dye maker in earlier years, he owned Hub Machine Die in Lynn.
He moved to Centerville in 1979.
Mr. Tavano was the owner of Sandy's Roast Beef & Seafood. He later owned Cape Cod Seafood, a wholesale and retail fish market.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a seasonal resident of Florida for the past three years.
Surviving are two sons, Rodney N. Tavano and Richard J. Tavano, both of West Barnstable; two daughters, Michelle Tavano of Hamden, Conn., and Nikki Tavano of Centerville; a brother, Gerald Tavano of Ipswich; two sisters, Carol Griffin of Revere and Phyllis Curerri of Wakefield; and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
Burial was in Marstons Mills Cemetery.
