Claire C. Johnson, 83

Barnstable - Claire C. Johnson, 83, a resident of Barnstable, died March 26, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of Warren Johnson, who died in 2001.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Medford. After high school, she attended a business school for two years, but her greatest enjoyment was being a homemaker and raising a family.
She lived in Jamaica Plain until 1954, then moved to Needham. In 1982, she retired to Cape Cod, where she spent summers since the late 1960s.
She was a longtime volunteer at the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop in Hyannis. She loved cooking, traveling and playing bridge.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane (Johnson) Miller and Phyllis (Johnson) Andrade, both of Quincy; a brother, Edward Nesky of Wells, Maine; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at South Congregational Church in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to South Congregational Church, 565 Main St., Centerville, MA 02632; or to Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, 690 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Janice Mary LaPorte, 60

Marstons Mills - Janice Mary (Moroski) LaPorte, 60, a resident of Marstons Mills, died March 30, 2002, at her home following a long illness.
She was the wife of John F. LaPorte.
Mrs. LaPorte was born, raised and educated in Worcester. She graduated from South High School and attended Worcester State College. Mrs. LaPorte also resided in Spencer for 15 years, and had lived in Marstons Mills for the past 20 years.
Mrs. LaPorte was a telephone supervisor in Worcester for the former New England Telephone Co. She worked for the Spencer Library, and had worked as director of the Centerville Public Library for the past 16 years.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Osterville, and enjoyed cooking, reading and traveling.
Surviving besides her husband are her mother, Blanche Moroski of Worcester; a brother, Wallace R. Moroski of West Hyannisport; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Centerville Public Library, 585 Main St., Centerville, MA 02632.

Richard Michael Leary, 37

West Hyannisport - Richard Michael Leary, 37, of Hanover and West Hyannisport, died March 25, 2002, of coronary disease.
Mr. Leary was born in South Weymouth and raised in Hanover and Valley Forge, Pa. He was a graduate of Massasoit College.
He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing and boating. He was also a licensed certified scuba diver who enjoyed underwater photography, and a member of the Old Colony Sportsman Association in Pembroke.
A music lover, he became an accomplished guitarist. He was an avid reader of American history.
He is survived by his parents, Ronald and Sybil (Burns) Leary of Hanover and West Hyannisport; four sisters, Kathleen Olsson of Hingham, Susan Wachob of Hinesburg, Vt., Deborah Eckhart of Lancaster, Pa., and Nancy McKown of Downingtown, Pa.; three aunts; five nephews; eight nieces; and a great-nephew.
A funeral was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Janet Devlin MacKenzie, 85

Bradenton, Fla. - Janet Devlin MacKenzie, 85, formerly of Hyannis, died March 23, 2002.
Born in Worcester, she moved from Hyannis to Florida in 1984.
Mrs. MacKenzie was an elementary school teacher. She was a member of Yarmouthport Hospital Aides, El Conquistador Country Club of Bradenton, New Floridians Club and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, and a minister of the Eucharist for the homebound.
Surviving are a son, Brian W. MacKenzie of Buena Vista, Va.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Sarasota, Fla.

Dr. Philemon 'P.T' Truesdale Marvell II, 33

Newport, R.I. - Dr. Philemon "P.T." Truesdale Marvell II, 33, of Newport, R.I. and Little Compton, R.I., who practiced in Hyannis, died unexpectedly March 23, 2002, at his residence.
Born in Fort Benning, Ga., he lived in Bordeaux, France, for seven years, and in Little Compton, R.I. He lived in Newport, R.I., for the past four years.
Dr. Marvell owned and operated Newport Family Practice and worked with his father at Tru Med in Fall River and Hyannis. A physician for almost 10 years, he loved every minute of it and all his patients. He practiced in the Newport-Fall River area at Charlton Memorial and St. Anne's and Newport hospitals. At the same time, he was doing medical research and published many medical articles concerning hyperlipidemia, diabetes and hepatitis C. He founded Total Health Care Fair in Newport to promote education and disease prevention through an integration of alternative and allopathic medicine.
Dr. Marvell also established Women's Health Care, Medical Minute on the Newport radio station, and made house calls as well as boat calls.
He attended school in Bordeaux, France, the Wilbur School in Little Compton, R.I., Friends Academy in Dartmouth, Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs and graduated from Providence Country Day School with National Honors in Physics. A 1988 honors graduate in physics from the University of Vermont, he attended the University of Grenada Medical School and did his residency at Brown Medical School, Pawtucket Memorial Hospital and became a certified medical doctor in internal medicine.
A sailor and an aviator with a private pilot's license, he was a member of the Sakonnet Yacht Club, Sakonnet Golf Club, Bailey's Beach in Newport, Newport Preservation Society and International Yacht Restoration School. He also worked for the Department of Disabled Services and was board eligible for addictive medicine and a medical review officer. Dr. Marvell was an honorary member of the New York Yacht Club.
Surviving are his parents, Dr. Philemon "Captain" Truesdale Marvell and Rhonda (Moore) Marvell of Little Compton; a brother, Edward Brayton "Ted" Marvell of Newport, R.I.; his fiancée, Lauren Lankau; grandparents, Elinor T. Marvell of Tiverton, R.I., Mary Tugwell of Florida; aunts, uncles and several cousins
A celebration of life was held in the United Congregational Church in Little Compton.

Ruth A. Nason, 88

Hyannis - Ruth A. Nason, 88, a resident of Hyannis for more than 50 years, died March 28, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.
Born and raised in Needham, she graduated from Needham High School in 1931 and from Forsyth Dental School for hygienists in Boston.
She was the owner and operator of Ruth A. Nason Gifts on Main Street for many years.
She loved gardening and traveling.
Surviving are a sister, Jane N. Demarkles of Hyannis; two nephews; a niece; a grandniece and five grandnephews.
Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.

Clovis L. Poyant Jr., 85

Sarasota, Fla. - Clovis L. Poyant Jr., 85, formerly a resident of Hyannis, died March 22, 2002, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota.
He was the husband of Blanche Jeanette (Verronneau) Poyant of New Bedford.
Mr. Poyant enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942 and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He was first stationed at the Chatham Light Station as a ship's cook 3rd class. His foreign duty brought him to the Pacific, serving on the USS LST 789, where he held Service Campaign Ribbons for his tour at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
At the time of his discharge, he had a rating of ship's cook 1st class and held qualifications as rifle marksman.
A baker by trade, he owned the Cape Cod Bakery for many years. His baked goods found their way onto tables at the Kennedy compound on many occasions as well as into the hands of local neighborhood children.
Mr. Poyant volunteered at local schools, churches, businesses, charities, organizations and neighborhoods. He was involved with the St. Francis Parish CYO programs, the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Bass River Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Susan Briggs and Charlene DeFazio; two grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Barbara Eddy; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. April 20 at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Hyannis.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Cape Cod Times Need Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.

John H. Rose, 74

Marstons Mills - John H. Rose, 74, a resident of Marstons Mills, died March 25, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a long illness.
Born, raised and educated in Boston, Mr. Rose worked for the city of Boston for more than 30 years, retiring as a highway inspector in the early 1990s. He moved from Readville to Marstons Mills after his retirement.
He enjoyed fishing, painting and the opera.
Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Tosi of Hyannis and Helen Pescatore of South Yarmouth; and his friend and roommate, Richard Grieco of Marstons Mills.
Rites of Christian burial were celebrated in Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
Burial was in Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Paul Joseph Tardanico, 47

Hyannis - Paul Joseph Tardanico, 47, a resident of Hyannis, died March 28, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Kathleen C. (Carlson) Tardanico of Hyannis
Born in Quincy, Mr. Tardanico attended Bridgewater State College. He had always worked in the construction field.
Mr. Tardanico was an iron worker for many years for the union Local 7 in the Boston area. He later started his own business, specializing as an iron worker.
He later and worked in his own business as a carpenter.
Mr. Tardanico moved to the Cape in 1996 from Boston and most recently lived in Hyannis.
In his earlier years, he was active in Little League and youth football and volunteered for various organizations.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Angela and Lauren Tardanico of Avon; his mother, Mary A. Tardanico of South Dennis; two brothers, Edward Tardanico of South Dennis and Michael Tardanico of Woburn.
A memorial service was held at Christ Chapel in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
