Sally Pember, 82

Sewell, N.J.. - Sally Pember, 82, a resident of Sewell and formerly of Centerville, died May 7, 2002, at the Oak Knoll Healthcare Center in Framingham.
She was the wife of the late Howard W. Pember for 53 years.
She was born in Troy, N.Y.
Mrs. Pember was a resident of Centerville for almost 20 years, She moved to Sewell in 1998. She had been a resident of the Smoke Rise Community in Kinnelon, N.J., from 1957 to 1979.
Mrs. Pember enjoyed volunteering for the Centerville Historical Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Holly Franz and of Aiken, S.C., Janice Graham of Ashland and Sara McClain of Turnersville, N.J.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6 Strathmore Road, Natick, MA 01760.

Josephine E. Power, 97

Cotuit - Josephine E. Power, 97, a resident of Cotuit, died May 8, 2002, at her home after a long illness.
Born, raised and educated in Arichat, Nova Scotia, Ms. Power attended nursing school in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She later moved to Boston and had worked as a registered nurse at New England Deaconess and Beth Israel hospitals for many years.
She had been a seasonal resident of Cotuit since the early 1950s. She moved to Cotuit from Boston when she retired 27 years ago. Since her retirement as a hospital registered nurse, Ms. Power summered in Cotuit and wintered in Florida, where she was a private duty registered nurse in both areas.
She was a communicant of Christ the King Parish in Mashpee.
She was an avid bridge player and was active with the Senior Center in Mashpee.
Survivors include two nephews, John G. Power of Truro and Ernest J. Power of New York City; a niece, Cecily A. Sanchez of Yarmouthport; and five grandnephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Christ the King Chapel in Mashpee. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Walter A. Rosenblith, 88

Marstons Mills - Walter A. Rosenblith, 88, a resident of Marstons Mills and Miami, died May 1, 2002, at the Miami Heart Institute of Miami Beach of complications from prostate cancer.
He was the husband of Judy (Olcutt) Rosenblith for 60 years.
Born in Vienna, Mr. Rosenblith studied there and in Berlin, Lausanne, Paris and Bordeaux. He earned degrees in communications engineering from the University of Bordeaux in 1936 and Ecole Superieure d'Electricite, Paris, in 1937. In 1939, he came to the United States to study the effects of industrial noise on humans. When the outbreak of World War II prevented his return to France, he conducted research and taught physics at New York University and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Mr. Rosenblith pioneered the use of computers and mathematical models in the study of the brain as a biophysical information handling system.
From 1943 to 1947, he was a member of the physics faculty at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. In 1947, he became a research fellow at Harvard University's Psycho-Acoustic Laboratory.
He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951 as an associate professor of communications biophysics in the Department of Electrical Engineering, becoming full professor in 1957 and institute professor in 1975. He was faculty chair from 1967 to 1969.
As MIT's associate provost from 1969 to 1971 and provost from 1971 to 1980, he played a central role in developing the health sciences and biomedical engineering disciplines at MIT. While associate provost, he was also acting director of the Harvard-MIT Joint Center for Urban Studies.
In 1994, MIT established a chair in his honor. Fifty Walter A. Rosenblith graduate fellowships were created in 1997, covering all of the schools at MIT.
Mr. Rosenblith's career included significant accomplishments in the sciences, technology, education, international cooperation and public policy. He was one of a small number of scholars elected to the National Academies of Sciences complex. He was foreign secretary of the National Academy of Sciences from 1982 to 1986, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Science.
Mr. Rosenblith helped found MIT's Program in Science, Technology and Society, and later joined it.
His early work in hearing led him to collaborate with faculty at the Harvard Medical School in the formation of the Eaton Peabody Laboratory for Auditory Physiology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He was research associate in otology from 1957 to 1969, and then lecturer in otology and otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School. He was the author of numerous papers in scientific journals and received honorary degrees from several universities.
Mr. Rosenblith lectured widely in the United States and abroad and served on many boards. He served on the International Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China from 1977 to 1986, and was named a consulting professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 1998.
He served on the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Brandeis University board of trustees.
From 1978 to 1986, he was a member of the President's Board on Foreign Scholarships (Fulbright), and was its chairman in 1980-81. He was a member of the USIA Advisory Panel on International Educational Exchange from 1982 to 1986.
French President Francois Mitterrand named Mr. Rosenblith a "Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur" for his services at MIT and elsewhere on behalf of intellectual and scientific exchanges between the United States and France. He was also awarded the Alexander von Humboldt medal, as well as the Okawa Prize for outstanding contributions to research.
At the time of his death, Mr. Rosenblith was working on a book about MIT's former president Jerome B. Wiesner.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Sandy, of Chevy Chase, Md.; a son, Ron, of McLean, Va.; a brother, Eric, of Newton, Mass.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at MIT at a later date. Burial is private.
Memorial donations may be made to MIT for the Wiesner book project; or to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Robert W. Russell, 82

West Barnstable - Robert W. Russell, 82, a resident of West Barnstable, died May 10, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis following a brief illness.
He was the husband of Grace L. (Law) Russell.
Mr. Russell was born in Aboca, Pa., and raised and educated in Wyoming, Pa. He earned an industrial arts degree from Pennsylvania State University, and also served in the ROTC program there.
A World War II Army veteran, he served at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
After the war, Mr. Russell returned home and graduated from Lehigh University, earning a degree in special education and psychology. He served on the State Advisory Board of Special Education in New Jersey and was the president of the National Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. He was a pioneer in setting national standards for special education in America.
He retired from Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, N.J., in 1978.
Mr. Russell had been a seasonal resident of West Barnstable since 1964 and retired here permanently in 1980. He was a member of the West Parish Congregational Church in West Barnstable, and also served as the church historian. He enjoyed making Nantucket baskets, woodworking and socializing with others.
Surviving are two daughters, Jean K. Russell and Janet L. Russell, both of Mashpee; a sister, Janet R. Schunemann of White Bear Lake, Minn.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral was held in the West Parish Congregational Church in West Barnstable. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Maurice Richard Villadsen, 52

Beaumont, Tex. -- Maurice Richard Villadsen, 52, who leaves a sister in Osterville, died May 6, 2002, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont, Tex.
He was the husband of Joy (Stewart) Villadsen for 16 years.
Born in Orange, Tex., Mr. Villadsen was educated at St. Mary's High School and Lamar University in Beaumont. He worked at Hogan Steel and Erectors in Orange on and off for 30 years, full-time since 1996, when he moved from Baltimore.
He enjoyed restoring antique furniture and houses and was working on a major restoration of his own home in historic Orange.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons from an earlier marriage, Christen and Ryan Villadsen of Orange; his mother, Joann Villadsen of Orange; four brothers, Skov Villadsen, Karl Villadsen of Tulsa, Okla., Michael Villadsen of Kirbyville; and Robert Villadsen of Beaumont; five sisters, Telisa Derosier of Osterville, Mary Ann McDaniel of Orange, Monica Baldwin of Houston, Denise Scheeler of Houston and Paulette Howington of Orange; five grandchildren and two step-daughters, Mary Joe Rampley and Debbie Senger of York, Penn. Three brothers, Peter, Marshall and Rodney, predeceased him.
A Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Orange.

Roger L. Wharton, 78

Centerville - Roger L. Wharton, 78, a resident of Centerville and Naples, Fla., died May 10, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Virginia (Taylor) Wharton, who died in May, 2000. They were married 57 years. Before moving to the Cape in 1967, they lived in Ashland and raised their family in Weston.
Born in Newton, he grew up in Wellesley and was a graduate of Wellesley High School. In addition, he was a graduate of Norwich University in 1948. He served in the Army Air Corps, and obtained an honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant. He was employed by the Herrick Co. in Boston, then after moving to the Cape he joined the staff of the Cape and Vineyard Electric Co. and was later employed by Mid-Cape Center. In 1979, he co-founded Kitchen Appliance Mart in Hyannis. The business was sold in 1987. During his entire career, he specialized in appliance sales.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was an Episcopalian, and was a member of St. Mary's Church in Barnstable. He also was a member of St. Mary's Church in Naples.
Survivors include a son, Roger L. Wharton Jr. of Vermont; and three daughters, Andrea Driscoll of Centerville, Margaret Parker of Hyannis and Victoria Wharton-Goodman of Auburn, Maine. He also leaves six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held in June at St. Mary's Church, Barnstable, at a date to be announced.

Nathalie M. Wheeler, 79

Marshfield - Nathalie M. (Boulais) Wheeler, 79, a resident of Marshfield and formerly of Centerville, died May 9, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of the late Robert F. Wheeler.
Born in Holyoke, Mrs. Wheeler graduated from Springfield High School. She was a homemaker and lived in Marshfield since 1994. Mrs. Wheeler previously lived in Centerville for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Dyer of Marshfield and Belinda Liddell of Plymouth; two sons, Robert F. Wheeler Jr. of Hanover and Barry J. Wheeler of Kingston; two brothers, Fred Boulais of Texas and Robert Boulais of Arizona; and six grandchildren.
She was also the mother of the late John B. Wheeler.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Christine's Church in Marshfield
Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to any Catholic church.

Saunie Whitney, 86

Hyannis - Saunie Whitney, 86, a resident of Hyannis, died May 8, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care-Pavilion.
She was born in Hyannis and was a graduate of Barnstable High School. She was a lifelong Cape resident.
She worked for the Barnstable County National Bank for many years. She was a bookkeeper and retired in the late 1980s.
She was a member of the Federated Church in Hyannis. She was also an avid fan and volunteer for many years of the Hyannis Mets baseball team, part of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
She loved music, swimming and flower gardening.
Survivors include two sons, Sidney Anthony Tsiknas of Hyannis, and William Tsiknas of Kapaa, Hawaii; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are private.
