Gardner Howes, 66

Sandwich - Gardner Howes, 66, a resident of Sandwich, died unexpectedly May 25, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Sally Howes.
A fourth-generation Cape Codder, Mr. Gardner grew up in West Chatham. After graduating from Bentley College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he settled in Sandwich with his wife. Later, he earned a certified public accountant degree.
He worked in the Barnstable school department for more than 25 years as business manager. He was also an instructor of accounting at Cape Cod Community College for 20 years in the evening program.
Mr. Gardner was a devout Christian and devoted to his family.
Besides his wife, survivors include their children and families, Rob, Lynn, Emma, Sandy, Grant, Kobe, Jeff and Carolyn; and two brothers, Everette and Jimmy.
A graveside burial took place in Cataumet Cemetery in Bourne.

Martha Lewis, 93

Osterville - Martha (Connolly) Lewis, 93, a resident of Osterville, died May 31, 2002, at Cape Heritage Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Sandwich.
She was the wife of the late John G. Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Cass Lake, Minn., and moved to Boston at the age of 11, graduating from Hyde Park High School. After high school, she worked summers on Cape Cod, where she met her future husband.
Mrs. Lewis was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville. She loved travel, and took annual trips to Minnesota.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley M. Rogers of Marstons Mills and Bonnie L. Withington of Osterville; two sons, David A. Lewis of Osterville and John F. Lewis of Calabash, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville, with burial in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to Massachusetts Center for S.I.D.S., Boston Medical Center, Boston Medical Center Pl., Boston, MA 02118; or to a charity of one's choice.

Frederick Charles Lough, 86

Osterville - Brig. Gen. Frederick Charles Lough, 86, a resident of Osterville, died May 28, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a short illness.
He was the husband of Marguerite Lough.
Lough had a distinguished career that combined military, academic and diplomatic service. Born in Fall River, he attended Durfee High School and Brown University. In 1938, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was assigned as an attaché at the U.S. embassy in London.
Later he joined Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's staff, and assisted in planning the invasion of North Africa. Lough assumed command of the 63rd Signal Battalion, which saw action at both the Salerno and Anzio Beachheads.
In 1949, Lough earned a law degree from Columbia University in New York City. In 1960, President John F. Kennedy appointed him as professor of law and senior academic board member at the U.S. Military Academy. Lough earned the Distinguished Service Medal from the government for service above and beyond the call of duty.
He went to work at Ropes and Gray law firm in Boston in an emeritus position from 1978 to 1988.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Frederick C. Lough Jr. of Wyomissing, Pa.; a daughter, Elizabeth Thebaud of Upperville, Va.; and six grandchildren.
A Mass was celebrated in Holy Trinity Chapel at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Burial with full military honors was in the U.S. Military Cemetery.

James S. Owens, 80

Centerville - James S. Owens, 80, a resident of Centerville, died May 22, 2002, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following a brief illness.
He was the husband of Barbara (Lewis) Owens for 52 years.
Mr. Owens was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and served in the Navy during World War II.
He resided in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for 39 years and served as a town councilman for Poughkeepsie in the early 1970s. He was an insurance agent until his retirement at age 65. He moved to Cape Cod in 1997.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Nancy J. Galioto of Centerville and Susan H. Rizzo of Hyannis; two sons, James D. Owens of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Peter T. Owens of Tarrytown, N.Y.; a sister, Jane Melly of White Plains, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. Burial followed at Beechwood Cemetery in Cotuit.
Memorial donations may be made to C-O-M-M Volunteers, Inc., 1875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02631.

Lillian J. Reichers, 84

Osterville - Lillian J. (Both) Reichers, 84, of Osterville, died May 25, 2002, at her home after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late Albert J. Reichers Sr.
Mrs. Reichers was born in Wyandott, Mich., and raised and educated in Jersey City, N.J., where she graduated from Dickinson High School. She worked as a secretary for many years in New York City, and later left work to become a homemaker and raise a family. Mrs. Reichers and her family later moved to Northboro, where she worked as assistant town clerk for several years. She retired to Osterville in 1978.
Mrs. Reichers was a member of the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Shrewsbury and the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Mashpee. She was a former troop leader with the Girl Scouts in Livingston, N.J. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and was an avid reader.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara J. Simonds of Lenox and Judith A. Arredondo of Rehoboth; two sons, Albert J. Reichers and Robert J. Reichers, both of Eastham; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Josephine 'Joan' Richardson, 85

West Barnstable - Josephine "Joan" (Warrum) Richardson, 85, a resident of West Barnstable, died May 27, 2002, at her son's home in Hingham.
She was the wife of the late John L. Richardson.
Mrs. Richardson was born in Chicago, Ill., and raised in Gary, Ind. She attended DePauw University in Indiana and graduated from Pestalozzi-Froebel Teachers College in Chicago with a bachelor's degree in education.
She lived in Milford, Conn., from 1949 to 1957, and in Hingham from 1957 to 1975. From 1975 to the time of her death, Mrs. Anderson lived in West Barnstable.
She was a kindergarten teacher in Chicago and Milford before working for the Hingham public schools, at the Lincoln School, then the Plymouth River Elementary School.
She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, knitting and rug hooking.
Survivors include three sons, Alan L. Richardson of Lodi, Calif., John E. Richardson of Hingham and Mark B. Richardson of Somersworth, N.H.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich.

Catherine W. Ryan, 85

Hyannisport - Catherine W. Ryan, 85, a longtime resident of Hyannisport, died May 27, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of the late John J. Ryan.
She was born in Lorain, Ohio. She attended DePaul University in Chicago.
She lived in Mariemont, Ohio, until moving to Hyannisport in 1969. She worked as a librarian for Cape Cod Community College for 12 years, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathy L. Ryan-Gagnon of Sunderland and Denise D. Hammond of Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701; or American Cancer Society, 720 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Richard R. Wagner, 94

West Barnstable - Richard R. Wagner, 94, a resident of West Barnstable, died May 26, 2002, at Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bourne after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Betsey (Perry) Wagner, who died in 1995.
Mr. Wagner was born in Duderstadt, Germany, and attended the University of Göttingen, Germany.
He retired in 1967 as executive vice president of Audivox Inc., of which he was also a co-owner.
He lived in Westwood for many years until moving to West Barnstable in 1967, having spent many summers in Barnstable. He was a former member of the Barnstable Yacht Club.
Mr. Wagner raised orchids and was a former member of the Massachusetts Orchid Society. He also traveled extensively and enjoyed classical and Dixieland jazz music. He was appointed as a visitor to both the Classical and Egyptian departments of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Survivors include two daughters, Gretchen Wagner Feero of Scotia, N.Y., and Johanna Davis Wagner of Hyannis; two grandchildren; five nieces; and three nephews.
Services will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Whelden Memorial Library, Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable, MA 02668.

Dorothy L. Woodlock, 87

Hyannis - Dorothy L. (Buiel) Woodlock, 87, a resident of Hyannis Park and formerly of West Newton, died suddenly May 30, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of the late James William "Bill" Woodlock.
Born in Rockland, Mrs. Woodcock graduated from Rockland High School. She lived in West Newton for several years and was the owner of the Gold Star Beauty Shop in Waban. She moved to Hyannis in 1970.
Mrs. Woodlock is survived by a son, Bill Woodlock of Mauldin, South Carolina; two daughters, Janet E. Hunt of Watertown and Dorri Woodlock of Randolph; two sisters, Jane Avery and Ellen Shawnessy, both of Carver; a brother, Alexander Buiel of Florida; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Newton. Burial followed at Newton Cemetery.
