Joseph Edward Magnuson, 78

West Dennis -- Joseph E. Magnuson, a long-time Cape resident, died Aug. 1, 2001, at Epoch Senior Health Care in Brewster after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Marjorie (Abbot) Magnuson for 54 years.
Born in Medford, he was educated in Medford schools, attended Northeastern University in Boston and graduated from Villanova College in Pennsylvania as part of a Marine Corps program. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps as a staff sergeant in 1946 after participating in the occupation of Japan.
Mr. Magnuson held a number of engineering jobs in Massachusetts, Florida, and Connecticut. He was the base electrical engineer at Otis Air Force Base from 1955 to1964. From 1964 to 1984, he held civil service positions in Libya, France, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey. Up to the time of his death, he had been actively involved with private electrical engineering work on Cape Cod.
He was a deeply committed church man and held many positions in Osterville Baptist Church and the Evangelical Baptist church of South Yarmouth. His greatest passion was being actively involved with mission work worldwide.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five children: David Magnuson of Baltimore; Susan Hoffman of Needham; Chaplain Major Peter Magnuson of Barnstable; Gail Hutchinson of Waxhaw, N.C.; and Carol Wolgemuth of Lancaster, Penn. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, a brother, Victor Magnuson of South Dennis; a sister, Bette Darwin of San Raphael, Cal.; and many other dear family members.
A memorial service was held at the Cape Cod Covenant Church in Brewster. A private family burial will be held in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Edison C. Marney, 68

Osterville - Edison C. Marney, 68, a resident of Osterville and a native Cape Codder, died July 27, 2002, at his home.
He was the husband of Sally A. (Fitch) Marney of Osterville.
Born in Osterville, Mr. Marney was a graduate of the Barnstable school system.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Marine Corps.
Mr. Marney was a retired builder and co-founder of Rogers & Marney Inc. of Osterville
He was a member of the Mariners Lodge AF&AM in Cotuit, Osterville Veterans Association, Osterville Anglers Club, West Barnstable Deer Club, Korean War Veterans Cape and Islands Chapter, and a retired member of the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills volunteer fire department.
He was an avid boater, fisherman and hunter, partaking in those activities in Maine, Massachusetts and Florida. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard F. Marney of Osterville and Peter E. Marney of Marstons Mills; two brothers, Arthur K. Marney and Osborne F. Marney, both of Osterville; a sister, Pearl Marney Williams of Osterville and New Port Richey, Florida; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A memorial service was held at the United Methodist Church in Osterville.

Marie L. Murphy, 68

Centerville - Marie L. (Lessard) Murphy, 68, a resident of Centerville, died July 30, 2002, at her home after an illness of cancer.
She was the wife of the late Edward A. Murphy of Waterbury, Conn. They met while Mr. Murphy was stationed at Camp Wellfleet.
Born in Orleans, she attended the former Orleans High School.
A resident of Orleans from 1933 to 1957, she lived in Waterbury, Conn., from 1957 to 1976, in Brewster from 1976 to 1989 and then in Centerville from 1989 to 2002.
She was a certified nurses assistant at Brewster Manor Nursing Home.
A member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, she enjoyed playing cards, bingo and fishing.
Survivors include two sons, John E. Murphy of Centerville and Kevin P. Murphy of Hyannis; four daughters, Patricia M. Murphy of Hyannis, Rosemary E. Balian of Gladys, Va., Sharon C. Knowlton of Centerville and Kellie A. Sylvestre of Hyannis; two sisters, Beatrice Ferreira of Orleans and Alice McCarthy of Orleans; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Federated Church of Hyannis.

Fred H. Oehme, 88

West Hyannisport - Fred H. Oehme, 88, a resident of West Hyannisport, died July 26, 2002, at his home after a long illness.
He was the husband of Helen I. (Payette) Oehme, who died in 1981. They were married in 1942.
Mr. Oehme was born in Germany and came to the United States at age 12. He attended Dedham High School and was an apprentice cabinetmaker for a furniture manufacturer in Brookline.
A World War II Navy veteran, he served with the Seabees in the Asiatic-Pacific theater.
After the war, Mr. Oehme moved to Hyannis, where he was a cabinetmaker, working for builders and cabinetmaking firms. He was a member of the local carpenters' union.
Mr. Oehme was past president of the German Club of Cape Cod, past president of Seaside Park Improvement Association and a member of the Hyannis Civic Association.
He was a 50-year member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, where he worked with church youth groups, and a former auxiliary police officer in Hyannis.
An avid Red Sox fan and an active bowler, he also enjoyed gardening, growing both flowers and vegetables.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan R. Donald of Palmer and Laurel Hazleton of Ellington; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery there.
Memorial donations may be made to the New Cardiac Surgical Unit at Cape Cod Hospital, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Mildred M. Picciuolo, 87

Marstons Mills - Mildred M. Picciuolo, 87, a resident of Marstons Mills, died July 29, 2002, after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late Louis J. Picciuolo.
Born in Boston, Mrs. Picciuolo lived in East Boston, before moving to Marstons Mills 32 years ago. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Louis J. Picciuolo Jr. of Winthrop; a daughter, Emily J. Attardo of East Boston; and five grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Sacred Heart in East Boston.
Burial followed in Marstons Mills Cemetery.

Joanne E. Pratt, 31

Marstons Mills - Joanne E. Pratt, 31, a resident of Marstons Mills, died July 31, 2002, after an illness with cancer related to retinal blastoma, which caused her blindness while still a baby.
Born in Hyannis, she was raised in Barnstable and educated in Barnstable schools, graduating Barnstable High in 1988. She had attended Emerson College and the Dove Star Massage Therapy School in Plymouth and New Hampshire.
After completing her education, she traveled extensively to England, Scotland, Ireland and throughout the United States.
She enjoyed horseback riding in her younger years and volunteering for the Cape Cod Therapeutic Riding Clinic.
She had lived for many years in Boston and recently moved to Marstons Mills. She loved caring for and raising her son, as well as her dogs and cats. She also enjoyed long walks in and around Boston, playing guitar and practicing her massage therapy.
Survivors include a son, Alexander R. Pratt of Marstons Mills; her mother, Barbara J. (Empey) Pratt; a brother, David M. Pratt of Marstons Mills; four sisters, Karen L. Mills of Hyannis, Lois J. Pratt of Hatchville, and Jennefer L. Pratt and Barbara A. Pratt, both of Hyannis; a niece; three nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road (Route 28), in Marstons Mills.
Burial will be private.

Helen M. Robbins, 36

Centerville - Helen M. Robbins, 36, a resident of Centerville and formerly of Worcester, died unexpectedly Aug. 1. 2002, at Cape Cod Community Hospital.
Ms. Robbins was an elder care worker for many years and formerly worked at Elder Services of Massachusetts and the Shrewsbury Nursing Home. She was a graduate of Worcester State College. She enjoyed fishing, boating, horseback riding and scuba diving. She was an advocate of the elderly and an animal lover.
Survivors include her mother, Helen R. Von Maluski of Agawam; her father, Gerald Robbins of Worcester; a stepfather, Arthur Von Maluski of Agawam; two brothers, Drew Von Maluski of Agawam and Aaron Dean of Worcester; three sisters, Angela Dean of Charlton, Jennifer Dean of Oxford and Cassandra Dean of Texas ; a stepsister, Kathleen Sirois of Auburn; her companion, Leslie Shwom; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Charles Borromeo Church in Worcester.

Arthur Sagan, 87

West Yarmouth - Arthur Sagan, 87, a resident of West Yarmouth for more than 23 years, died July 23, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a short illness.
He was the husband of Ruth Griffin of South Dartmouth from 1973 until her death in 1995. He was previously the husband of Anne Boese of Framingham from 1945 until her death in 1965.
A resident of Cape Cod for 62 years, Mr. Sagan lived in West Yarmouth and before that resided in Centerville.
He was an employee of Colonial Candle until his retirement.
Mr. Sagan was a World War II veteran, serving from 1941 to 1946 and fighting in Guadalcanal, the North Solomons and the Philippines. He was a chief warrant officer in the Army Corps of combat engineers and received the Bronze Medal for bravery in 1945.

Sevastia N. Santziliotis

Hyannis - Sevastia N. Santziliotis, a resident of Hyannis, died Aug. 1, 2002, after a short illness.
She was the wife of Nikolaos G. Santziliotis, who died in 1996.
Mrs. Santziliotis was born and raised in Mytilene, Greece, and immigrated to Hyannis in 1971. She worked alongside her sister at the uniform shop in Hyannis for many years. They were also very active together at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Maria D. Demopoulos of Athens, Greece, Filitsa Alexander of Corpus Christi, Tex.; a sister, Efstratia Voutas of Hyannisport; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She especially enjoyed her family.
A Mass was celebrated at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville.
