Carleton H. 'Carl' Burlingame, 77

West Yarmouth - Carleton H. "Carl" Burlingame, 77, a resident of West Yarmouth, died July 22, 2002, at Hospice House in Barnstable.
Born in Cotuit, Mr. Burlingame served in the Army during World War II.
He was a groundskeeper and courier for Colonial Candle Company of Cape Cod in Hyannis.
Mr. Burlingame enjoyed playing cards and going to the dog track. He cared for his many dogs over the years. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.
Survivors include two daughters, Marlene Anne Mercier of Spencer and Lynn Ellen Burlingame of Putnam, Conn.; two stepsons, Peter LaCoste of Rochdale and Clarke Hammersley of Niantic, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Linda Ellis of South Dennis; a sister, Marlene Frazier of Hyannis; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late Marlon Burlingame.
A funeral was held at Marstons Mills Community Church. Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Malcolm Lindley Horton, 94

Osterville - Malcolm Lindley Horton, 94, a resident of Osterville, died July 25, 2002, at his home after a brief illness with cancer.
He was the husband of Kathleen (Nickerson) Horton, who died a few weeks ago.
Born in Dighton, Mr. Horton grew up there and moved to Taunton in his earlier years. He later moved to Osterville in the late 1950s. He worked in automotive sales most of his years, which included Ford in Hyannis and Orleans Motors.
He enjoyed hunting, shellfishing and spending time outdoors.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruthann Smith of Osterville, and two grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Roger E. Paron Sr., 71

Bay St. Louis, Miss. - Roger E. Paron Sr., 71, a former Hyannis resident, died July 20, 2002, at his home in Bay St. Louis.
Mr. Paron was born in Cambridge, Mass. He lived in Hyannis for many years, and had resided in Bay St. Louis for the past 20 years. He served in the Air Force for four years and was a veteran of the Korean conflict.
Mr. Paron loved his family and friends, and especially enjoyed animals and growing roses.
Surviving are five daughters, Lynda M. Labriola, Marjorie M. DeChristopher and Dorinda M. Paron, all of Hyannis, Aletha Matsis of West Yarmouth and Marna D. Paron of Wasilla, Alaska; two sons, Roger E. Paron Jr. and Forrest E. Paron of Hyannis; a foster son, Michael Mederios of Tennessee; three brothers, John D. Paron of Leesburg, Fla., Raymond Paron of Hyannis and Francis Gaspar of Billerica, Mass.; three sisters, Dorothy McQuaid of Hull, Mass., Jacqualine Shumsky of Hudson, N.H., and Dee Argo of Chandler, Ariz.; 29 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Forrest R. Paron.
Memorial donations may be made to Sta-Home Hospice in Biloxi, Miss.

Richard Elliot Renaud, 63

Hyannis - Richard Elliot Renaud, 63, a resident of Hyannis, died July 25, 2002, at his home.
He was the husband of Ingrid (Wennberg) Renaud since 1981.
Born in Marlboro, Mr. Renaud had lived in Hyannis for the past 14 years, having moved to the Cape from Hudson. Prior to that he had resided in Windsor, Conn.
Mr. Renaud served with the Marine Corps from 1958 to 1961. He was a cabinetmaker in the finish carpentry business until retiring in 1963 due to a disability.
Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Sandra Richard of Marlboro, Kim Smolinsky of Somerville, and Robin Frias of Hudson; a son, Ricky Renaud of Connecticut; two brothers, Edgar Renaud Jr. of Hudson and Curtis Renaud of Marlboro; eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Nathan Steve Taffin, 94

Centerville - Nathan Steve Taffin, 94, a resident of Centerville, died July 24, 2002, of a brief illness at Cape Regency Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where he was a resident for two years.
He was the husband of Ruth (Kessler) Taffin, who died in September 2001.
Born in New York, N.Y., he was an Army Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Taffin was in clothing sales and managerial positions for Miracle Mile Clothing Store in Coral Gables, Fla.
He was a member of Jewish War Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Beth David Congregation in Miami. He was also a volunteer for 20 years at both Mercy Hospital and Cedars Hospital in Miami.
He moved in with his daughter in Centerville five years ago.
Survivors include twin daughters, Leslie M. Chizak of Centerville and Julie T. Koehn of Warwick, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Falmouth Jewish Cemetery. Shiva was held at the home of Leslie and Paul Chizak in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Samuel Freeman Bassett, 79

West Barnstable - Samuel Freeman Bassett, 79, a resident of West Barnstable for 32 years and formerly of Centerville, died July 28, 2002, at home after a seven-year illness.
He was the husband of Phyllis Bassett.
Born in West Yarmouth, Mr. Bassett was a painter for 35 years before retiring.
He enjoyed nature and wildlife.
Besides his wife, survivors include two half sisters, Gloria Barabe of Kingston and Ruth Pina of Hyannis; a half brother, Lenny Bassett of Dennis; two stepsons, George W. Kalweit of Centerville and James L. Kalweit of Raleigh, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Cathy A. Wittenmeyer of West Barnstable; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to West Barnstable Rescue; or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Vernon James Britt, 95

Newington, Conn. - Vernon James Britt, 95, a resident of Newington and formerly of Marstons Mills, died July 31, 2002, at the Palliative Care Unit at Hartford Hospital after a brief stay.
He was the husband of Yvette (Cormier) Britt for 66 years.
Born in Northampton, Mr. Britt graduated from Northampton High School and Northampton Commercial College. He was an outstanding athlete, a respected coach and an avid sports fan. Highlights of his sports career include head basketball coach of St. Michael's High School in Northampton, semiprofessional baseball in Hartford, team manager of the Caval Tool entry in the inaugural Newington Little League in 1950 and scoring his age in golf at 72.
During World War II, he served with the 41st Field Artillery as a forward observer attached to the 3rd Army in the battle campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for conduct of fire at forward positions of observation.
Mr. Britt retired in 1972 as an executive for the Travelers Insurance Companies. He served for 43 years in the home office and field operations, where worked in the corporate audit department. As assistant corporate auditor, his responsibilities included fleet management, corporate relocation and Life Agency recognition conferences.
He and his wife enjoyed their retirement years living in Marstons Mills from 1973 to 2001, when they returned to Newington.
Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Verne-Marie Britt Kozak of Newington; a son, James Britt of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Helen Britt Blanchard, of Northampton, Mass.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
A celebration of his life was held at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home in Newington.
Burial with military honors was in West Meadow Cemetery in Newington.

John J. Carrigan, 79

Worcester - John J. Carrigan, 79, of Worcester and Centerville, died Aug. 3, 2002, at his home in Worcester after an illness.
He was the husband of Marion M. (Allen) Carrigan for 54 years.
Mr. Carrigan was born in Worcester and had lived there all his life, graduating from South High School. He worked as a salesman for H.P. Hood & Sons in Boston for 30 years, and was employed for 20 years as a Worcester Superior Court officer and deputy sheriff for Worcester County, retiring in 1997. He was a member of the H.P. Hood Quarter Century Club, Retired State, County & Municipal Employees Association, a retired member of the AFL-CIO Local 254, and a past member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, John P. Carrigan of Marstons Mills; a daughter, Nancy P. Carrigan of Centerville; and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of the Angels Church in Worcester, with burial in St. John's Cemetery there.

John Francis Harding, 92

Weston, Conn. - John Francis Harding, 92, a resident of Weston, Conn., and formerly of West Barnstable, died July 2, 2002.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Hoyt Harding since 1935.
Born in Cedar Grove, Ind., he was a 1930 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy. After a tour of duty with the International Ice Patrol, he became one of the Coast Guard's earliest aviators, and served at Coast Guard Air Stations in Biloxi, Coronado and Coconut Grove.
While stationed at Coconut Grove, he was the Coast Guard's liaison officer charged with developing a protocol for what is now known as search and rescue.
After World War II, he was assigned command of Salem Air Station, and then to District headquarters in Boston and New York. After a two-year assignment in Argentina, Newfoundland, he returned to New York, where he retired as commander of the 3rd Coast Guard District.
Mr. Harding assumed management of S.B. Hoyt Florist, his father-in-law's business in New Canaan, Conn. In 1960, he and his family moved to West Barnstable, where he volunteered many hours of community service and enjoyed gardening, fishing, golf and bridge.
Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Nancy Harding of Weston, Conn., and Linda Waugh of Claremont, N.H.; a son, Stephen Harding of South Dennis; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
