Adrian 'Gibby' Desmond, 87

Barnstable - Adrian "Gibby" Desmond, 87, a resident of Barnstable, died Sept. 2, 200, at Salem Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Ruth (Walsh) Desmond and Mary (Grazino) Desmond.
Born in Boston, Mr. Desmond was a longtime resident of Boston. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Desmond was a police officer for the former MDC Police Department, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. He retired to the Cape in 1978.
An avid golfer, he loved sports and the Red Sox.
He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.
Survivors include two sons, John Desmond of South Boston and Robert Desmond of Lynn; a stepson, Frederick Tirrell of Barnstable; a sister, Ruth Shaw of Wollaston; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, with burial in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery there.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.

Marion Duffley, 73

Hyannis - Marion (Silk) Duffley, 73, a resident of Hyannis, died Sept. 5, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital.
She was the wife of John I. Duffley Sr., who died in 1981.
Mrs. Duffley was born in Medford. She graduated from Belmont High School in 1947 and from Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing in 1949 as a registered nurse.
While raising her family, she worked at McLean Hospital in Belmont. She moved to Cape Cod in 1965, where she worked at Whitehall Nursing Home and in the operating room at Cape Cod Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1987. Mrs. Duffley lived in Medford and Gardner before recently moving back to Cape Cod.
In the early 1970s, she was an active member and former secretary of the Barnstable High School Quarterback Club. She enjoyed arts and crafts and traveling around New England. She had a great love for animals, football and the outdoors.
Survivors include three sons, John I. Duffley Jr. and Michael Duffley, both of Centerville, and Mark Duffley of Nashua, N.H.; two daughters, Patricia Larkin of Great Barrington and Maureen Atsalis of Marstons Mills; a brother, Kevin Silk of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Marjorie E. Hall, 87

Hyannis - Marjorie E. (Bates) Hall, 87, of Hyannis, died Aug. 30, 2002, in the EPOCH Health Care Center of Brewster.
She was the wife of Andrew B. Hall, who died in 1981.
Mrs. Hall was born and raised in Milton and graduated from Milton High School.
Also the graduate of a secretarial school, she worked for many years as a secretary and accountant at the Lemuel B. Shattuck Hospital in Boston, retiring in 1980. She lived in Milton until moving to Hyannis in 1997.
Mrs. Hall was a member of the East Congregational Church of Milton and an active member of the Milton Animal Rescue League and Shelter.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela J. Lapham of Hyannis and Susan E. Krebs of Auburn, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Kenneth E. Hall.
A funeral was held in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Milton, with burial in Milton Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Mass. Chapter, 29 Crafts St., Suite 450, Newton, MA 02158.

Philip Anthony Ierardi, 91

Centerville - Philip Anthony Ierardi, 91, a resident of Centerville, died Sept. 1, 2002.
He was the husband of Karen (Hellested) Ierardi of Centerville.
Born and raised in Roxbury, he attended Commerce High School, Boston University and Bentley College in Boston. He was a longtime resident of Westwood and had lived in Centerville since 1975.
Mr. Ierardi was a well-known semi-professional baseball player in the Boston area before being drafted into the Army in 1941, one of 39 draftees from the Boston area in the first draft prior to Pearl Harbor. He was stationed at Camp Edwards in Bourne. He held the rank of sergeant of the 806th tank destroyer battalion until July 1944, when he volunteered to reduce his rank to greater private first class in order to be sent to Germany. Before his discharge in 1945, he served as gun commander for the 807th, 804th and 802nd tank destroyer battalions and received four battle stars for participation in the battles of Northern France, Rhineland and central Germany and the Battle of the Bulge.
He played semi-pro park league baseball in the Boston area until age 56 and also played in Westwood's softball league until age 64. He coached St. John's CYO post high school baseball league and Westwood's senior baseball league to many championships.
He also loved squash, jogging and swimming at Dowses Beach in Osterville.
Mr. Ierardi worked as a special investigative agent for the U.S. Treasury Department. He was a member of the University Club in Boston, the Elks Club in Hyannis and the Disabled American Veterans. He was devoted to his family.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Michael Ierardi of Centerville and Philip Ierardi Jr. of Kingston; three daughters, Tia Ierardi of Osterville, Mary Ierardi of Centerville and Andrea Leary of Newton; two sisters, Portia Mears of Abington and Rose Pappas of Dedham; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Charles W. Lovell, 90

Osterville - Charles Warren Lovell, 90, a lifelong resident of Osterville, died in his sleep Sept. 5, 2002, at Cape Regency Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Centerville.
He was the husband of Elizabeth (Cunningham) Lovell, who died in 1987.
Mr. Lovell was born in Osterville. He joined the Centerville-Osterville Fire Department in 1927 at age 15, and was a call fireman for 50 years until his retirement at age 65 in 1977. The longest-serving member ever of the department, Mr. Lovell responded to thousands of fire and rescue calls over the years and was a very active member of the department.
He was also a founding member of the Osterville Fireman's Club and C&O Volunteers. After his retirement, he remained active at the fire department, tending the flagpole, telling stories and attending department functions.
Mr. Lovell also worked at the Oyster Harbors Golf Course, Otis Air Force Base Fire Department and the town of Barnstable Highway Department.
After his retirement, he worked at Dowses Beach. He loved fishing and hunting.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Hillside Cemetery (West) in Osterville.

William E. 'Bill' McCabe, 77

Centerville - William E. "Bill" McCabe, 77, of Centerville, died Sept. 1, 2002, at his home.
He was the husband of Helen B. (MacMillan) McCabe for 54 years.
Born, raised and educated in Wellesley, Mr. McCabe was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Baltimore in the Pacific.
Mr. McCabe was a Mason for more than 50 years, and was a Shriner and a past captain of the Mounted Horse Patrol in Wilmington. He was also Past Commander of American Legion Post 14 in Needham and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hyannis.
An avid sports fan, he was past president of the Seniors Bowling League in Hyannis. He was assistant membership chairman for the Osterville Men's Club and a volunteer for the handicap parking patrol.
Mr. McCabe was a resident of Needham from 1948 to 1988, when he moved to Centerville.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Gregory W. McCabe of Falmouth; a daughter, Deborah L. Harmon of Sandwich; three brothers, Raymond W. McCabe and Robert G. McCabe, both of Wellesley, and Thomas M. McCabe of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held in the United Methodist Church of Osterville. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Harriet O'Keeffe, 88

Hyannisport - Harriet (Stone) O'Keeffe, 88, a resident of Hyannisport, died Sept. 5, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was the wife of Lionel H. O'Keeffe, who died in 1987.
Born and raised in Attleboro, she graduated from the Northampton School for Girls, attended Wheaton College and received a degree from Simmons College.
Mrs. O'Keeffe lived in Brookline for many years and was active in volunteer work.
She spent summers in Hyannisport and moved there year-round in 1973.
She enjoyed gardening and bridge.
She was a member of the Hyannisport Club, the Oyster Harbors Club and the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen McDonald of Centerville; two sons, Timothy O'Keeffe of Centerville and Peter O'Keeffe of Hyannisport; a sister, Betty Parker of Osterville and Vero Beach, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Elizabeth C. Sheehan, 86

West Hyannisport - Elizabeth C. (Nagle) Sheehan, 86, a resident of West Hyannisport, died Sept. 4, 2002, in Chicago.
She was the wife of John C. Sheehan, who died in 1996.
Born and raised in Boston, she graduated from Girls Latin School and from Boston Teachers College in 1937. She married, moved to Marshfield and became a homemaker. While raising heir family, she taught Latin, business and commercial courses for several area schools.
She retired and moved to West Hyannisport in 1974. While living in Marshfield, she was a communicant of St. Christine's Parish.
While on Cape Cod, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
She loved swimming and walking around Hyannis.
Survivors include two sons, J. Brian Sheehan of Montclair, N.J., and the Rev. Myles N. Sheehan of Chicago; a daughter, Maureen E. Sheehan of Hyannis; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
