Jacqueline Congalton, 83

Centerville - Jacqueline (Ryan) Congalton, 83, a resident of Centerville, died Sept. 20, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis following a brief illness.
She was the wife of William A. Congalton, who died in 1994. They were married for 49 years.
Mrs. Congalton was born in Freeport, N.Y.
She was educated at the New York School of Interior Design.
She practiced interior and textile design in New York City prior to raising her family.
She was a longtime resident of Long Island until moving to Centerville, where she resided for the past 16 years.
Surviving are two sons, Christopher W. Congalton of Chicago and Richard P. Congalton of Palatine, Ill.; two daughters, Jacqueline R. Congalton of Centerville and Barbara H. Perfetuo of Marshfield Hills; a sister, Muriel L. Ryan of Miami; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, with burial at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery there.
Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Hospital, Education & Training Services, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Elizabeth E. 'Betty' Davis, 87

Centerville - Elizabeth E. "Betty" (Eichel) Davis, 87, a resident of Centerville, died Sept. 10, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of George A. Davis for 61 years.
Born in Dorchester, she was educated in Boston schools.
She worked in telephone sales for Sears & Roebuck in Boston. Mrs. Davis lived in Centerville for more than 30 years.
She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
She was an avid Gardner and raised African violets in her home and gave them to churches, nursing homes and many people.
Besides her husband, survivors include a son, George A. Davis Jr. of Freetown; a daughter, Sharon E. Hagspiel of Bellingham; a sister, Esther Hawkins of Mount Dora, Fla.; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville, with burial in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Elsie Davis/Hubbard, 93

Port Charlotte, Fla. - Elsie Davis/Hubbard, 93, a resident of Port Charlotte and formerly of Osterville, died Sept. 17, 2002.
She was born in New Brunswick, Canada. She moved to Port Charlotte in 1998 from Cape Cod. She lived in Manchester, Conn., for 25 years and in Osterville for 27 years.
Survivors include two sons, Carl F. Davis of Centerville and Bruce W. Davis of Port Charlotte; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Holmes Funeral Home, Manchester, Conn., at a later date.

Earl L. Downs, 81

Hyannis - Earl L. Downs, 81, a resident of Hyannis and formerly of Dalton, died Sept. 7, 2002, at his home.
He was the husband of Winifred M. (Laframboise) Downs since 1942.
Mr. Downs was born in Pittsfield and graduated from Dalton High School.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant. He received several campaign medals.
He worked as an assembler in the power transformer department at GE for 44 years, retiring in 1983. He moved to the Cape in 1988.
In Dalton, Mr. Downs was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church. He was also a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' Clubs.
He was a former coach of Babe Ruth baseball in Dalton.
Besides his wife, survivors include three sons, Michael J. Downs of Canajoharie, N.Y., Paul E. Downs of Everett and David W. Downs of Westfield; a sister, Barbara Newhouse of Greensboro, Vt.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was also the father of Phillip J. Downs, who died in 1964.

Ann M. Meleski, 92

Millis - Ann M. (Kosciusko) Meleski, 92, a former summer resident of the Cape, died Sept. 16, 2002, at Medway Country Manor in Medway.
She was the wife of Anthony P. Meleski, who died in 2000. They were married for 64 years.
Born in Worcester, she was a resident of Millis for the past 66 years and was a former summer resident of Hyannisport.
Mrs. Meleski graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester. She was a secretary at Herman Shoe Co. in Millis for 20 years before retiring in 1975. She had also worked for the former Ulian Limited in Worcester for several years, where she was a secretary to the president of the company.
She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Millis and was active in Sodality, Catholic Daughters of America, Catholic Women's Club, the Altar Society, Massachusetts Citizens for Life, American Life League and the St. Thomas Respect Life Committee. For many years, she was also a devoted worker for the parish's Bayberry Fair and a member of the Golden Lions.
She loved all of nature, especially flowers, as well as entertaining, cooking, knitting, beachcombing and making wreaths.
Survivors include three daughters, Joan Kenney of Norfolk, Carol Dragun of Yarmouthport and Mary Louise "Mame" Meleski of Centerville; two brothers, Raymond Kosciusko of Auburn and Mitchell Kosciusko of Clemson, S.C.; a sister, Jane Kosciusko of Wrentham; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Millis, with burial following in Prospect Hill Cemetery there.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Church Memorial Fund, 111 Exchange St., Millis, MA 02054; or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Walpole, P.O. Box 252, Walpole, MA 02051.

Mary G. Piper, 73

Englewood, Fla. - Mary Gay Piper, 73, a resident of Englewood and formerly of West Barnstable, died Sept. 16, 2002, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
She was the wife of Louis A. Piper of Englewood.
Mrs. Piper was born in Boston and lived in Englewood since 1997, coming from West Barnstable.
She also lived in Kona, Hawaii, and Montgomery County, Pa., for many years.
She attended Miss Halls' School and received an associate's degree in horticulture and psychology from Temple University.
She was active in American Kennel Club affairs and a breeder of Irish setters, miniature poodles and cocker spaniels.
Mrs. Piper was recognized for her basket weaving and creative jewelry design. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Englewood Orchid Society.
Besides her husband, survivors include a daughter, Linda Piper of Doylestown, Pa.; a son, Louis A. Piper IV of Miami Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Englewood Community Funeral Home. A second memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable.

Edward S. Sweeney, 78

Palm Bay, Fla.- Edward S. Sweeney, 78, of Palm Bay, Fla., died Sept. 11, 2002, at the home of his daughter in Rindge, N.H., after a long illness.
He was the husband of Frances Gloria Gregware Sweeney for 57 years.
Mr. Sweeney was born in Belmont, graduated from Belmont High School in 1942 and attended Boston College. He served as a pilot with the Air Force during WWII and was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America.
For several years, Mr. Sweeney was the owner and riding instructor of Belair Riding School in Natick. He was also co-owner of Fran Edwards in Watertown. He retired in 1985 as president and chief executive officer of American Directory, Inc., of Boston, after working there for 35 years.
While raising their children, Mr. Sweeney and his wife lived in Westwood and Chatham. They also previously lived in Sherborn and in Falmouth. After Mr. Sweeney retired, they spent 10 years as residents of Marstons Mills and then moved to Palm Bay, where they lived for the past five years.
Mr. Sweeney was a member of the Wychmere Harbor Yacht Club and the Hyannis Yacht Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Janice Youlden of Osterville and Lynda Hunt of Rindge, N.H., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was also the father of the late Edward Stephen Sweeney.
A memorial service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville. Burial followed in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Gerald L. 'Jerry' Brailey, 61

Hyannis - Gerald L. "Jerry" Brailey, 61, a resident of Hyannis and a native Cape Codder, died Oct. 5, 2002, at his home after a long illness with lung cancer.
He was the husband of Carol M. (Coggeshall) Brailey for 41 years.
Mr. Brailey was born in Harwich, educated in Cape Cod schools and studied business law at Cape Cod Community College. He served in the Army for three years as an ammunition specialist, and was stationed in Wildflecken, Germany, for two of those years.
He was the owner of Brailey Building Co. for 30 years.
Mr. Brailey loved boating, clamming and fishing with his sons and friends. He loved animals, and most of all enjoyed being with his family.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Scott Brailey and Kevin Brailey, both of Hyannis; two daughters, Christine Brailey-Greene of Marstons Mills and Yvette Brailey of Hyannis; a brother, John Innello of Virginia; two sisters, Jacqueline Joseph of Hyannis and Diane Grundstrom of Florida; and two grandchildren.
A funeral was held at John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
Memorial donations may be made to the Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center, Cape Cod Hospital, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 1577 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.
