Jennie Halpern, 87

OSTERVILLE - Jennie (Cohen) Halpern, 87, of James Way, died Friday afternoon, August 25 in the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville. She was the wife of Irving Halpern.

Born April 18, 1913 in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Isar & Ida (Levi-Kahn) Cohen.

She was a resident of Osterville for 20 years and previously resided in Norwood.

Mrs. Halpern was a homemaker most of her life and was a member of a needlepoint club in Hyannis.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son; Michael Halpern of Newton; a brother; Frank Cohen of Sharon, and a grandaughter; Fay Halpern of Cambridge.

Funeral services will be private.

Muriel R. Hanson, 83

NORTH CHATHAM - Muriel R. Hanson died August 23, 2000 at age 83. Muriel was born on July 7, 1917 in New York City to Henrietta and Walter Ripperger.

Muriel graduated from Vassar College in1938 and went to work for Woman’s Day Magazine as a feature editor. She married Donald P. Hanson in 1943. Mr. Hanson, founder of Woman’s Day Magazine, died in 1978.

After her marriage, Muriel wrote a regular monthly column for Woman’s Day and published other articles in women’s magazines.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church and wrote a published history of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Survivors include two sons, Lars P. Hanson and Donald P. Hanson, Jr.; a daughter, Wendy Gimbel; a sister, Margaret Milbrath and seven grandchildren.

Disposition will be by cremation. No memorial service is planned.

Priscilla K. Sheldon, 82

PLAINVILLE - Priscilla L. Kettell-Sheldon, 82, of School Street in Plainville died Thursday afternoon, September 14, 2000 in Madonna Manor Nursing Home, North Attleboro. She was the wife of Walter Sheldon and the late Chester M. Kettell.

Born July 31, 1918 in Beverly, she was a daughter of the late Maurice L. and Ruth E. (Pederson) Hopkins. Mrs. Kettell-Sheldon has been a resident of Plainville for over 50 years and was previously of Norwood and grew up in Beverly.

After high school, she completed a two-year dieticians course at Norfolk Agricultural School and then worked as the head dietician at Norwood Hospital for nearly 10 years. She was a homemaker most of her life and an avid seamstress, frequently making clothes for friends, church members or anyone else. She was active in First Baptist Church in North Attleboro for 40 years serving as a deaconess and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also loved taking pictures.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Marjorie E. Kettell of Jamaica Plain and two sons, David and Gil Kettell both of Wareham; a brother, Warren Hopkins of PA; a sister, Eleanor Pollock of NY; a close niece, Nancy Kenerson of Plainville; and 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric, Justin, Brandon and Kyle Kettell. She was also survived by several other nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held in the SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro on Monday at 10 a.m. followed by burial in Shepardville Cemetery, Plainville. Visiting hours was held on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

Helen Downes Light, 88

SHREWSBURY - Helen Downes Light, age 88, died, September 10, 2000 at home in Shrewbury, MA.

Born April 6, 1912 in Brooklyn, NY, she spent her school years in Montclair, NJ and graduated from Vassar College with the Class of 1933, which included numerous friends whom she cherished throughout life.

After several years in Lower Manhattan as part of an active employment agency and as a volunteer social worker, she married Donald W. Light in 1938 and her focus changed to her family, with four children, plus volunteer work in the Massachusetts communities where they lived including Groton for 25 years and Falmouth for 15 years. At various periods she was a member of the Junior League and the Colonial Dames.

She loved dancing, bridge, and travel; her enthusiasm for skiing and tennis, in years past, was contagious. She will be remembered not only for her years as an active community volunteer but also for her constant concern for those around her, reaching out for ways to help or please.

She is survived by her husband; four children: Beryl Flom, Donald, Jr., Marilyn Light, and Nancy Light; four grandchildren: Sharon Velasquez, David Flom, Holly Light, and Peter Light; and one great-granddaughter: Ana Velasquez.

A private family service will be held at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s name UMASS Memorial Hospice Fund, 16 Shaffner St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Richard O. Patton, 79

PLAINVILLE - Richard O. Patton, 79, of Taunton Street in Plainville died Saturday, September 16th, 2000 at Norwood Hospital.

He had just celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary on September 1st to his wife, Alice (Cooper) Patton.

Born September 14, 1921 in Plainville, he was a son of the late Frank O. and Charlotte (Root) Patton.

A lifelong resident of Plainville, he was a 1939 graduate of Norfolk County Agricultural school, graduating with honors. He worked as a carpenter for several firms before retiring over 20 years ago.

Mr. Patton hobbied in farming and always had a large garden.

In addition to his wife, survivors include 5 sons, David O. of York, ME, Charles S. of Plainville, Kenneth R. of Plainville, Donald A. of Bridgewater, and Gerald E. Patton of Plainville; 5 daughters, Beverly P. Larkin of Chesapeake, VA, Kathryn A. Clatterbuck of Bealeton, VA, Margaret L. Murphy of Attleboro, Audrey E. Plante of North Attleboro and Julie A. Cormier of North Attleboro; 4 sisters, Ruth Keyes of Bedford, Elizabeth Heath of Pawtucket, RI, Frances Monson of Port Organe, Fl and Jane Briggs of Foxboro; Also survived by 14 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was sister of the late Loir Tainsh.

A private committal service will be held at Shepardville Cemetery in Plainville at a later date. Arrangements are provided by the SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Caritas Hospice, 111 Dedham Street, Norfolk, MA 02056 or Make-A-Wish Foundation, 295 Devonshire St., 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02110.

Charles O. Peasley, 83

Former Plainville Town Moderator, School Committee Chairman

PLAINVILLE - Charles O. Peasley, 83, of Glen Meadow in Franklin and formerly of Plainville, died Monday, September 4, 2000 in his home.

He was the husband of Judith (Williams) Peasley for 56 years.

Born in Monmouth, ME on March 29, 1917, he was a son of the late Harold and Harriet(Guild)Peasley.

Mr. Peasley was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island in 1936 and served the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He worked at Fortifiber, Inc. in Attleboro for 33 years and served two terms as president of the Union.

He served as Town Moderator in Plainville for 23 years and was Plainville School Committee Chairman for 6 years. He was Past Commander and a life member of American Legion Post #217 and an active member of Plainville United Methodist Church for 60 years serving on the board of Trustees and other offices in the church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert and Barry Peasley and two grandchildren, Andrew and Danielle Peasley.

A funeral was held in the Plainville United Methodist Church, 16 East Bacon Street, Plainville on Thursday, September 7 at 10 a.m. Burial followed in Shepardville Cemetery. Arrangements are by the SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro.

Ethel Perdue, 83

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Ethel Perdue, formerly of Northwood Drive, died Saturday afternoon, August 26 at the Sharon Senior Care Center in Sharon.

Born May 31, 1917 in North Attleboro, she was a daughter of the late John and Edith (Fuller) Perdue.

Miss Perdue was a resident of North Attleboro all of her life.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Attleboro, active in the church’s Philathia Club and the Women’s Circle. Ms. Perdue worked at Texas Instruments for a few years, retiring in 1976. She also worked in many area jewelry firms.

She is survived by a niece, Joyce Wright of Contoocook, NH. She was also the sister of the late Charles, Raymond, and John Perdue, Elizabeth Halulas, Edith Trott, and Florence Reece.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 29 at 2p.m. in the SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro. Burial followed in Plainville Cemetery. Visiting hours were on Tuesday from 1:30 - 2:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

George "Ted" E. Wright, 62

Vietnam War Veteran

Carver, MA and Levamt, ME - George "Ted" E. Wright of Plymouth St. died Saturday, August 19, 2000 in his home. He was the husband of Lillian (Consalvi) Wright.

Born April 25, 1938 in Lowell, he was a son the late Richard and Doris (Somma) Wright.

Mr. Wright was a resident of Carver, MA for the past 10 years and Levamt, ME where he spent his summers. He graduated from Townsend High School in Townsend, MA.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Marine Corp and was a self-employed truckdriver for over 35 years.

Mr. Wright was a member of the American Legion Post #0040 in Plymouth, the Mason’s and Shriner’s Mayflower Lodge in Middleboro, the Upland Club in Plympton, The Scottish Rite, the Elk’s Lodge in Bangor, ME., the Eagle Club in Brewster, ME, the Moose Lodge in LaBelle, FL, and the National Rifle Association. He was also a Hog lifetime member of the Harley Davidson Group.

Mr. Wright was an avid sportsman and fisherman.

In addition to his wife of 37 years, survivors include a daughter, Laura Ann McElroy of Holden, ME, a brother, Richard and a sister, Betsy, both of Westminister, a sister-in-law, Linda McKinnon of Bridgewater and a niece, Kimberly McKinnon of Bridgewater.

A Memorial Service will be held at a time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to his wife, Lillian Wright, 22 Plymouth St., Carver, MA 02330 to help pay for funeral expenses.
