John Ray Sr., 77, corrections officer

NORFOLK -- John Wesley Ray Sr., 77, of 35 Seekonk St., died Friday in his home. He was the husband of Mary J. (Murphy) Ray.

Born in Norfolk on June 25, 1926, he was a son of the late William T. and Lillian (Callahan) Ray.

A lifelong Norfolk resident, he graduated from Walpole High School. He then enlisted in the Navy as a seaman first class. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II.

After the war, and until retirement, Mr. Ray was a corrections officer at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Norfolk.

Until illness prevented him, he loved to garden, and play horseshoes at the Walpole Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved country music, and played ice hockey well into his 50s.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Patricia Ray Sequin of Mansfield and Nancy Ray of East Boston; four sons, John `` Jack" Ray Jr. of Ft. Plain, N.Y., James Ray of Medfield, David Ray of Norfolk and Kevin Ray of Plainville; a brother, Charles `` Charlie" Ray, and two sisters, Lillian `` Betty" Ray and Dorothy Sanborn, all of Norfolk; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late William Ray.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary of the Norfolk Federated Church, 1 Union St., Norfolk. Burial will follow in the Norfolk Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St., Wrentham Centre.

Loretta Caouette, 84

ATTLEBORO -- A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Newell Burying Ground, South Attleboro, for Loretta T. Caouette, 84, of Garfield Avenue, who died Jan. 10 in the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home after a short illness.

Born in Attleboro, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Germaine (Berube) Caouette. She had resided in Attleboro most of her life and was a graduate of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She had received a bachelor of science degree from Boston University and had also attended Bryant College.

Miss Caouette had worked for Sturdy Memorial Hospital as a teacher in the School of Nursing, as head of the pediatric nursing staff and as a certified licensed social worker. She had retired after 20 years of service.

She had previously taught at the Cape Cod School of Nursing and at the former Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in Boston.

Miss Caouette had been active in the AAUW and as a member of the board of directors of the Attleboro Council on Aging from 1985 to 1991.

She had been actively involved in New Hope and the Markman Adult Day Care Center as well as many other community organizations.

She is survived by a brother, Gerard Caouette of Fall River; a sister, Yvonne Kivlin of Mystic, Conn., and 10 nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Dolores Thomas, Juliette Wolfenden and Lucille Lucas.

Arrangements are by the Cook Funeral Home, 160 Park St.

David Fontneau, 49

ATTLEBORO -- David E. Fontneau, 49, of Union Street, died Tuesday at home.

Born in Attleboro, he was a son of Gerard and Rita (Lambert) Fontneau. He was a lifelong Attleboro resident and was a 1971 graduate of Attleboro High School.

Mr. Fontneau had worked as a printer for the former Artline Printing Co. of Attleboro for 25 years until 1988. He later worked in the maintenance department at LaSalette Shrine for two years.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, a member of the St. John's Council 404 Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at LaSalette Shrine.

In addition to his father and mother he is survived by two brothers, Norman Fontneau of Seekonk and Denis Fontneau of Pawtucket; two sisters, Anne Marie Dodge of Centerville and Joan Silvia of Attleboro; two nieces and five nephews.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from the Foley-Hathaway Funeral Home, 126 South Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in St. Joseph's Church, 208 South Main St. Burial will follow in St. Stephen's Cemetery.

Pauline Steele, 78

ATTLEBORO -- Pauline R. Steele, 78, of Garfield Avenue, died Monday in Sturdy Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Harry Steele.

Born in Worcester, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Hilda (Anderson) Forslund. She had resided in Attleboro for the past 51 years.

Mrs. Steele was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Attleboro and its choir. She was an avid gardener and cook.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, Ronald Steele of Foxboro; a daughter, Donna Bellerose of Attleboro; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Sylvia Skonberg.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 647 North Main St. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are by the Cook Funeral Home, 160 Park St.

Amelia Ferrara, 65

MANSFIELD -- Amelia A. Ferrara, 65, died Monday in Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro. She was the widow of Elliot Ferrara.

Born in Boston on April 30, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Carmella (Accomando) Argenzio. She was a graduate of East Boston High School, and had resided in Brockton before moving to Mansfield seven years ago.

Mrs. Ferrara had been a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Denise McGreevey of Sutton and Cheryl Power of Mansfield; two brothers, Louis Argenzio of Brockton and Anthony Argenzio of Mansfield and nine grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Elliot Ferrara Jr.

A funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Friday from the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 North Main St., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 330 Pratt St., Route 106 at 9. Burial will take place in Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

Georgia Bryer, 79

PLAINVILLE -- Georgia L. Bryer, 79, formerly of Mirimichi Street and formerly of North Attleboro, died Sunday in the Maples Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Wrentham. She was the widow of J. Allen Bryer Jr., M.D.

Born in Michigan City, Ind., on Aug. 8, 1921, she was a daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Rommel) Hagenow. She had previously resided at Willow Crossings in Mansfield. She was a graduate of the St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Kankakee, Ill.

Mrs. Bryer had served as the officer manager for her late husband's medical practice in North Attleboro for 42 years.

She had served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps as ensign at Great Lakes Naval Base in Michigan.

Mrs. Bryer had been active in various civic organizations in the Attleboro area and was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in North Attleboro.

She was a member of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and past president of the Mass. Chapter of Medical Assistants, as well as the local chapter.

She is survived by a son, Peter Bryer of Plainville; a daughter, Jane Tetreault of Foxboro; a brother, Richard Hagenow of Manteno, Ill., and two grandsons.

An Episcopal service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro, with the Rev. Maryalice Sullivan officiating. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are by the John J. Diamond Funeral Home, 180 North Washington St., North Attleboro.

Agnes Bennett, 98

ATTLEBORO -- Agnes M. "Gramma Aggie" Bennett, 98, of George Street, died Sunday in the Ridgewood Court Nursing Home. She was the widow of Edward Bennett.

Born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Nov. 27, 1902, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mathilda (Armburst) Lange. She had resided in Attleboro since the early 1980s, moving from Martin, Tenn.

Mrs. Bennett had been a homemaker.

She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and a member of St. John's Ladies Guild.

She is survived by a son, Robert Stoops of Attleboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Ollie, Anthony and Edward Lange, and Bertha Carr.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., followed by a funeral Mass at 10 in St. John's Church, 133 North Main St. Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery, West Street.

Ellen Villeneuve, 86

FOXBORO -- Ellen E. Villeneuve, 86, died Saturday in Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro. She was the widow of Henry Chisholm and Clifford Villeneuve.

Born in Canton on Feb. 10, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Martha (Davis) Moss Sr. She had resided in Foxboro for the past 44 years, and was a graduate of Canton High School.

Mrs. Villeneuve had worked as a bookkeeper for Leach & Garner of Attleboro for five years and the former L.G. Balfour Co. of Attleboro for 15 years, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and was a member of the Larson Senior Center in Attleboro where she had played the piano.

She is survived by three sons, James Chisholm of Duxbury, Charles Chisholm of Attleboro and Herbert Chisholm of Norton; three daughters, Gertrude Harvey of Attleboro, Dorothy Chisholm of Cumberland, R.I., and Constance Vaught of Warwick, R.I.; two brothers, Charles and Frederick Jr. Moss, both in New Hampshire; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late John Chisholm and Elizabeth Murray.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield, followed by burial in the Canton Corner Cemetery, Canton.

Leona Wakefield, 95

ATTLEBORO -- Leona L. Wakefield, 85, of George Street, died Wednesday in the Ridgewood Court Nursing Home. She was the widow of Francis Wakefield and H. Russell Stevens.

Born in Whitehall, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Clara (St. John) Crandall, and had been delivered by her Mohegan grandmother, "Little Doe." She had resided in Attleboro from the age of 16.

Mrs. Wakefield had worked as a governess for a local doctor. She had also been employed as an enamel painter for the Robbins Co.

She was an avid painter and craft artist, including needlepoint, knitting and crocheting. She had been proud of her American Indian heritage.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Virginia Stevens; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late H. Russell Stevens Jr., and sister of the late Regina Norton and Clotilda Perault.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the North Purchase Cemetery, North Main Street, Attleboro.

Arrangements are by the Cook Funeral Home, 160 Park St.
