Maria Arcuri
1905 - 1999
Maria R. Arcuri, Homemaker in her 94th year. Mrs. Arcuri was born in Nicastro, Italy in 1905. She came to the United States in 1957 and has been a resident of West Newton, Massachusetts and a faithful parishioner of St. Bernard's Church in West Newton. Mrs Arcuri was the wife of the late John Arcuri who predeceased her in April of 1982. Mother of Rose Ganadolfi of West Newton, Joanna Pucci of Wellesley, Joseph Arcuri of Wellesley, Vincent Arcuri of Waltham and the late Lina Altieri. Mrs. Arcuri is predeceased by five brothers and four sisters. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews as well as many, many good friends. Funeral from the Blackington, Conroy & Hayes Funeral Home 1479 Washington Street (Rte 16) West Newton, Massachusetts Thursday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Bernard's Church at 10 AM. 1924 - 1999
Newton Police Detective Francis M. DeVito, of West Newton and York, ME. Died November 27, 1999. Beloved husband of Ruth Ann (Scannell). Devoted father of F. Michael Jr. of Wakefield, R.I., Nancy A. Witham of CA, Patricia C. Williams of Cape Neddick, ME., Ellen I. Howe of Woburn, Constance M. DeVito of Lexington, Mary E. Caira of Auburndale and Catherine A. Corbett of Needham. Brother of Barbara Bowers of Newton Highlands. Loving grandfather of Julie, Troy, Kelsey, Kerry, Sarah, Angela, Timothy and Alayna. Funeral from the Blackington, Conroy & Hayes Funeral Home, 1479 Wathington St., West Newton, Tuesday November 30 at 9 AM., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Bernard's Church at 10 AM. James McGlame James McGlame
1911 - 1999
James F. McGlame Jr., of Boston and Center Effingham, N.H., a contractor, died Friday in Massachusetts General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 88.
Mr. McGlame was born and raised in Mission Hill and was a former resident of Newton. He was a chief petty officer in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Philippines.
He was president of J.F. McGlame Co., James Construction Co., and Kevin Realty Trust, and was owner of Kevin's Wharf Inc. in Boston. He was the head of the Holy Name Society and a member of the parish council at Saint Bernard Church in West Newton.
Mr. McGlame served on state and national committees in the construction trades and plumbing, heating, and cooling contractors. He was a trustee emeritus at the Carroll Center for the Blind and founding trustee at the Carroll School in Lincoln. He was a pioneer in the passage of Chapter 766 legislation for services for children with learning disabilities.
He leaves four sons, Sean of Boston, Brian and James, both of Newton, and Kevin of Ayer; six daughters, Maureen of Boston, Alannah Van Boven of Piedmont, Calif., Deidre Libby of Sanbornville, N.H., Breida of Swampscott, Charleen of Reading, and Kerry of Glen Ridge, N.J.; a brother, Robert, of Truro; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said Tuesday at 10: 30 a.m. in St. Bernard Church in West Newton. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery.

James Spikes
1925 - 1999
James C. Spikes, 74 of West Newton Postal Clerk
James C. Spikes of West Newton died Friday December 3, 1999 at the Chilton House in Cambridge after a long illness. Mr. Spikes was a life long resident of West Newton. He graduated from Newton High School, after which he served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Spikes worked for the U. S. Postal Service in several Newton Post Offices including Newton Corner, Waban, and West Newton. Mr. Spikes was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 440 Newton. He was a member and a deacon at the Myrtle Baptist Church in West Newton. Mr. Spikes also served as a board member of the Newton Senior Center. Mr. Spikes was the husband of the late Florence (Gaigle) Spikes. Father of Melva Lloyd of Oklahoma City, OK. Loving father to Eyma N. Sutton of West Newton. Godfather of Vernon Williams of Nashville, TN. Brother of Winthrop Spikes and the late Orpheus Spikes. Grandfather of Andrea Gaddis and David Lloyd both of Oklahoma , and several other grandchildren. Funeral services will be in the Myrtle Baptist Church, 21 Curve Street West Newton, Wednesday at 10 AM. Visting hours in the Blackington, Conroy & Hayes Funeral Home 1479 Washington Street (Rte.16) WEST NEWTON Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 PM. Interment in Newton Cemetery, Newton Centre.

Walter Hill Walter Hill
1916 - 1999
Walter Leroy Hill, the second of eight children, was bom to Rev. Elijah and Ethel (Duncan) Hill on March 26, 1916. He departed this life on Friday, December 17, 1999 at age 83.
Walter was bom in Atlee, Virginia, educated in Hanover County, VA and baptized at Greater Nazarene Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, VA at an early age. He entered the US Navy at age 18 in 1934, just two years after Black men were once again allowed to join the Navy. This was the beginning of his lifelong love with the sea and travel. In 1934 Blacks were only allowed to be trained under segregated conditions with Unit K West and Unit B East In Norfolk, VA. During his tenure in the Navy he was assigned to the USS George E. Badger, a ship that transported the troops to Iwo Jima. He was actually at Iwo Jima when the fanio was placed there by American troops. It wasn't until 1945 that the Armed Forces were integrated by then President Harry S. Truman.
Walter retired from the Navy In 1958 with the rank of Petty Officer First Class. After retirement he began a new career as a custodian In the Newton Public Schools, a position that he held for twenty-four and a half years. He earned a Class II Firemen's License which qualified him to become a Senior Custodian. His leadership ability was quickly recognind and he was appointed Senior Custodian at the Warren junior High School and later at the Newton South High School.
Walter's love for the Navy continued even after his retirement He was active in the Navy Reserve Branch 3 in Boston, MA, attended the yearly reunion with Unit K West and Unit B East along with the reunions for the USS George E. Badger, the ship on which he spent the major part of the war years.
In 1958 he and his family relocated to Newton, Massachusetts. He joined Myrtle Baptist Church where he became an active member for the remainder of his life. He was a member and past chairman of the Deacon Board, a member of the Trustee Board and the Men's Chorus and he particularly enjoyed singing with the Mass Choir of the Church. In addition, he was an active member of The Deacon's Union of Boston and Vicinity.
He leaves to imum his loving wife of fifty-one years, Leahnora (Turner) IfilL a daughter Cyndi Dailey-Smith and her Howard B. Smith, and a daughter-in-law, Judith Hill. He is also survived by his grandchildren Precious, Maria, Susan and Kosey Hill, Karin and Michael Dailey II, and a great grandson, Morrow Bernard. He also leaves two sisters, Elizabeth (Hill) Taylor of Richmond, VA and Dr. Grace V. Norbrey of Ettrick, VA, six brother-in-laws, seven sister-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Gerald, four brothers and one sister.
The heavenly Father, in his Infinite wisdom knew that he was in need of a respite from this world with all Its sufferings and concerns. The Lord threw out the anchor and once again Walter boarded a ship and this destination was to the home of his heavenly Father.
Sleep on 'Walter, 'Leroy', "Uncle Lee, 'Wally', 'Uncle Walter, 'Walt', 'The Big Man', 'Old MaTr, 'W, "Daddy', 'Poppa', 'Grand Dad' and take your rest. We all loved you, but GOD loved you best.

Alice Tevlin Alice Tevlin
1898 - 2000
Alice Marie (Fanning) Tevlin
In her 101st Year. Alice was born in Newton in 1898. She attended Newton Schools and was a lifelong resident. Alice worked for the New England Telephone Company for 24 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. A member of the Corpus Christi Church Guild, Auburndale Women's Club, Pomeroy Club of Newton as well as a member of the Newton Senior Citizens Club. Alice is the wife of the late Thomas W. Tevlin. She is survived by several nieces , nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Funeral from the Blsckington, Conroy & Hayes Funeral Home 1479 Washington Street West Newton Thursday January 6, 2000, at 9 am. Funeral Mass in Corpus Christi Church at 10 am. Visiting hours Wednesday January 5, 2000, 2-4, 7-9 Pm. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Boston Catholic Television, 55 Chapel Street Newton, MA 02460.

Helen Keefe Helen Keefe
1920 - 2000
Helen (Green) Keefe of Newton died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following several heart attacks. She was 79.
Mrs. Keefe was raised in Dartmouth, the youngest of eight children and the only family member to complete high school. Following graduation in 1938, she took several jobs as a domestic in the Mattapoisett and Back Bay areas before enlisting in the Coast Guard in 1943. Following discharge from the Coast Guard in 1945, she attended the Fanny Farmer Cooking School in Boston. She was employed at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton where she met her future husband.
As a World War II veteran, Mrs. Keefe was active in the American Legion Women's Post 410, serving as post commander.
She participated in several local bowling leagues and Newton recreation women's volleyball.
In 1982, at the age of 63, she earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. She was an activities director at local nursing homes until retiring from Weston Manor in 1991.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John "Jack" Joseph Keefe; her children, Susan Messina of Foxborough, Judith Keefe-Freedman of Preston, CT, Michael Keefe of Mansfield and Catherine Pizzuto of Norton; her sister, Dorothy Brehaut of Dartmouth; and eight grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. At the Blackington, Conroy and Hayes Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street, West Newton, MA.
Burial will be in the veteran's lot at Newton Cemetary.

NEWHOOK, of Newton Centre, formerly of Milton, February 18, 2000. Elaine G. (Gaetani). Former wife of Robert M. of Roslindale. Mother of Robert G. of Cumberland, RI, Bonnie D. Kennedy of Grants Pass, OR, Mark D. of West Roxbury, Nancy E. Antonellis of Milford. Sister of Evelyn Bartley of West Palm, FL and Arthur L. Gaetani of Quincy. Also survived by eight grandchildren. Visiting hours Sunday 3-6 PM in the Blackington, Conroy & Hayes Funeral Home 1479 Washington Street WEST NEWTON. Service from the funeral home at 10 AM. Graveside service in Milton Cemetery at 11AM. Mrs. Newhook was a self employed Real Estate agent for 19 years in the Newton area. She was president of Global Voice Connect Systems of Newton since 1985 until her long illness.

Ann E. (Corrigan) Waters, of Newton Centre, MA, died in Florida on February 16, 2000.
Beloved wife of Leo P. Waters. Mother of Leo Waters, David Waters, James Waters, M.D., Mark Waters, George Waters, M.D., and Aileen DiSalvo. Sister of Francis Corrigan, Joseph Corrigan, and the late Gertrude Corrigan. Also survived by 11 grandchildren.
Funeral from the Blackington, Conroy & Hayes Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street (Rt 16), West Newton Wednesday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church at 10 AM.

Rosauro Castano Rosauro Castano
1925 - 2000
Rosauro E. Castano, 74, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and past Grand Knight, died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Jersey City Medical Center, New Jersey. Ross (as he is fondly called in the US or Dodong the Philippines) was married for more than 47 years to the former Clementisima Sagaran.
He left two sons, Clarencio and Ruperto, and a daughter, Marianne. He is survived by 5 sisters and 2 brothers, 3 grandchildren, and a great grandchild. Ross’s father, Valentin, the former mayor of Batanes, Philippines, and his mother, Catalina Espedido preceded him in death.
Ross was an importer-exporter by trade, and has traveled around the world for business purposes. He loved to hang out with his wife and family members. His hobbies included painting, drawing cartoons, and playing the harmonica. He was also an avid reader.
There were two funeral services for Ross. The first one was held on March 24th, Friday, with a wake at Alvarez-Marshello Funeral Home in Jersey City, NJ.There several members of the Knights of Columbus paid tribute to him as color guards. A Catholic Mass was held the following day with Monsignor Jeremiah Rebanal, pastor of St. Aedan’s Church in Jersey City. The second service was held in Waltham, Massachusetts on March 28th, Tuesday, with the wake at Brasco Memorial. Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Church the following day was officiated by the church’s pastor, the Rev. Rodney J. Copp. The committal service and internment was held at Calvary Chapel Mausoleum on March 29th.
His wife now joins their daughter in Massachusetts who lives near the mausoleum.

Visiting hours Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
