Frost, Roy E.
Frost, Roy E., FROST - Roy E., 91 of South Yarmouth and formerly of Waltham, died at his home Thursday June 21, 2007. He was the husband of the late Elisabeth (Mattson) Frost who died in 2004. They had been married for 67 years.
Born in Nova Scotia, Mr. Frost was raised and educated in Waltham. He was a graduate of Waltham High School.
Mr. Frost served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of aviation chief machinist's mate in 1945.
Upon returning to civilian life, Mr. Frost trained as a watchmaker. He worked for Waltham Watch Co. in Waltham and for Hamilton Watch Co. in Lancaster, PA. He then worked for Hyman Kahn Jewelers in Boston before purchasing the business when Mr. Kahn retired. He and his wife owned and operated Roy E. Frost Jewelers in Boston until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Frost was a longtime resident of Waltham before moving to Yarmouthport following his retirement. He enjoyed boating and golfing.
Mr. Frost is survived by a son, Roy A. Frost and his wife, Carol of Waltham; a brother, Floyd Blaisdell of Connecticut; three grandchildren, Ryan Scafidi, Angela McQuillan and Roy E. Frost II; and five great grandchildren, Jeremy, Alyssa and Ryleigh McQuillan and Julia and Conner Scafidi. He was predeceased by a son, James R. ???Jack??? Frost.
Funeral services will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Foundation of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Ln., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Greenwood, Barbara Louise (Cooley)
Greenwood, Barbara Louise (Cooley), of South Yarmouth on June 19 at the age of 88. Wife of Donald Starratt Greenwood and mother of William C. Greenwood of Cumberland, VA, Nancy L Messeck of Foxboro, MA and Susan K. Hersey of Marstons Mills, MA. She is also survived by four grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, June 22 at 1:00 P.M. in the United Methodist Church, Old Main St., South Yarmouth, MA. Contributions in her memory may be made to Alzheimers Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, 712 Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Withstandley, Rene K.
Withstandley, Rene K. , Pastry chef, Rene K Withstandley, 86, Resident of Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth, and long time resident of Brewster, died of heart failure Saturday, June 30th at the Cape Cod Hospital.
Mrs Withstandley was born Rene Claire Krim in 1921 to Charles and Irene Ward Krim of Shrewsbury . She graduated from the Kenwood Academy in Albany NY and married Paul Withstandley in 1942.The marriage lasted 60 years until the death of her husband.
Mrs Withstandley worked as a pastry chef and caterer until her retirement at age 80. She studied cooking in France and received a Certificat De La Cusine Francais from Haute Cuisine Bonnie Renoir in Paris. She also studied at Les-Baux -de -Provence, France under the tutelage of the famous American chef, Julia Child, as well as at L'Ecole de Trois Gourmandes in Paris. She was an active member of IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals), serving on committees for certification and training.
Mrs Withstandley passed on her passion for cooking and fine food to her four children and numerous of her grandchildren, nephews and neices.Her culinary talents were so extraordinary that most of the family stories revolve around her rare failures. She often experimented with new recipes , testing them on her own children before serving them to adults. Her most famous failure was the inedible "tuna aspic" that remained uneaten after cajoling, threats, and bribes; even the family dog would have none of it.These failures were extremely rare, and memories of her creme brulee and apple pie will live on for many years to come.
She is survived by three sons; Bart of Narberth PA, Jeffrey of Dennis MA and Christopher of Ft Pierce FL., a sister Frances DuBois of Harwich, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins. Also mother of the late Paula W. Ruby
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 6th at 10 AM. In Sacred Heart Chapel Sumer Street, Yarmouthport.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Susan B .Komen for the Cure 5005 LBJ Fwy., Ste. 250 Dallas, TX 75244. In memory of her daughter, Paula W. Ruby.

Horton, Ruth S. "Ducie" (Weir)
Horton, Ruth S. "Ducie" (Weir), 94 of West Yarmouth and formerly of Darien, CT died peacefully Wednesday August 18, 2010 at the Mayflower Place Nursing Center in West Yarmouth.
She was the beloved wife of the late Kingsley F. Horton, who died in 1970. Ducie and King lived a wonderful and full life in the 33 years that they shared together.
Born in Lackawanna, PA, Mrs. Horton was lovingly raised and educated in Scranton, PA and in Syracuse, NY. She was a graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in education, and is a lifetime member of the Alpha Phi Sorority.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Horton became a teacher at Darien High School in Darien, CT where she touched the lives of so many. She was passionate about education and the encouragement and validation of her students, whom she loved.
Mrs. Horton retired, after 17 years of teaching, to Cape Cod where she became a member, and was a former deacon, of the First Congregational Church of Harwich. She was also a member of PEO Chapter AJ of Dennis, a philanthropic education organization, and served as a volunteer board member for the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod.
Ducie was a ray of sunshine that lit up any room. She welcomed and warmly reached out to all with loving affirmations of praise. She faced the end of life with remarkable courage and dignity. She will be greatly missed by her many friends, whom she truly valued.
Her family was her biggest pride and joy. She is survived by two daughters, Judith Flanagan and her husband, Don of Shrewsbury, and Linda Turner and her husband, Bruce of Dennis; four grandchildren, Lynn Flanagan Tsombakos and her husband, Mark of Grafton, Kristen Molnar and her husband, Michael of Georgetown, James Flanagan and his wife, Amy of Sterling, and Kingsley Turner and his wife, Jill of East Kingston, NH; and seven great grandchildren, Cara, Nathanael, Joey, Lydia, Andrew, Timmy and Miles.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 7 in the Mayflower Place Retirement Community, 579 Buck Island Rd., West Yarmouth, MA 02673.
Interment will be private.

Cole, Patricia (Hine)
Cole, Patricia (Hine), 86, of Yarmouthport passed away Aug. 17 at Cape Cod Hospital after a short illness.
She was the wife of the late Richard L. Cole for 54 years.
Pat was born and raised in Jamestown, NY and educated in Lakewood, NY, the daughter of the late Clifford and Cecelia Hine.
Pat and her husband lived in Framingham, MA for 20 years where she was very involved in the Lakeshore Women’s Club. In 1982 they decided to retire to Yarmouthport.
Pat is survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn Cole Newson and her husband Roger, two grandchildren, Deb and Dave and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Charlie.
The family would like to thank the staff at Heatherwood for being so kind and supportive for the past nine years. Also thanks to the staff at Mayflower Nursing Center and Cape Cod Hospital.
Pat will be laid to rest at a private ceremony at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Bierkan, Herbert H.
Bierkan, Herbert H., 86 of East Orleans died at his home Thursday August 26, 2010.
He was the husband of Louise (Hobbs) Bierkan for 19 years and the late Dorothy (Siegel) Bierkan for 42 years before her death in 1990.
Born in Hartford, CT, Mr. Bierkan was a 1942 graduate of Hartford Public Schools. He was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking, Hartford Chapter in 1952.
Mr. Bierkan was vice president of Connecticut National Bank (Bank of America). He retired in 1985, after a 44 year career. During his retirement he served on various committees for Cape Cod Five Savings Bank.
A longtime resident of Farmington, CT, Mr. Bierkan was a summer resident of Cape Cod before moving permanently to East Orleans in 1985. He served as a director and was chairman of the board of Powerhold, Inc. in Middlefield, CT, and as a director and past chairman of the board of the Cape Cod Hospital Foundation. He was also a member of the Coffee Club in Orleans and served as its president for 17 years.
An avid railroad enthusiast, Mr. Bierkan was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching the Cape Cod Baseball League, especially the Orleans Firebirds.
Mr. Bierkan served as an honorary director of the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT; the Open Hearth Mission in Hartford, CT; and he was an Oblate Member of the Community of Jesus in Orleans.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bierkan is survived by two sons, Rev. Andrew J. Bierkan and his wife, Darlene of Cincinnati, OH, and Ross H. Bierkan and his wife, Jeanne of Vienna, VA; two daughters, Susan B. Deming and her husband, Steven of Farmington, CT and Holly B. Platter and her husband, Gene of Lutz, FL; three step-sons, Richard I. Mulholland and his wife, Jacqui of South Dennis, David S. Mulholland and his wife, Debbie of Wilmington, NC, and Douglas E. Mulholland and his wife, Audra of Centerville; thirteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday August 30 in the Church of the Transfiguration, 5 Bay View Dr., Orleans.
Interment will be private.

Fanara, John P, Jr.
Fanara, John P, Jr., 52 of Dennis, passed away at his home Thursday August 26, 2010 , after a short hard battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was the husband of Deborah ( White ) Fanara. They had been married since August 25, 1979.
Born in Quincy, John moved to Dennis at the age of 5. He was a 1976 graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, where he met his soul mate, Deborah White , who was a member of the class of 1977. They both attended Franklin Pierce College and graduated in 1980.
John then attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA and graduated in 1983, which was the same year that his son, Nathaniel was born.
He opened his chiropractic practice in Dennis in 1984 and welcomed his daughter, Kelcey that same year. The Fanara’s third child, Mallory was born in 1985.
Mr. Fanara loved people, his profession and was dedicated to healing through chiropractic. After leaving his practice after 12 years, he took up photography and became a member of the American Professional Photography Association.
He loved to travel, camping, time in his yard, music of all kinds and playing his guitar, and spending time on his computer. His family was everything to him, his reasoning for living. John also had many causes he was passionate about, including St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, and many animal rescue associations, including the ASPCA.
In addition to his immediate family, John is survived by his mother, June (MacNaught) Fanara; a brother, Jeffrey and his wife, Beth; a sister, Joanne; a sister in-law, Deanne Robinson and her husband, Mark; his father and mother in-law, Forrest and Janet White ; four nephews; and one niece; He was predeceased by his father, John P. Fanara.
Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 1 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church, 246 Main St., West Harwich.
Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday August 31 in the funeral home.

Eames, Roger W.
Eames, Roger W. , age 59, beloved husband of Chrissy Petrillo, died unexpectedly at his Bass River home on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010.
Roger was a dedicated employee of IBM/Lotus for over 21 years. He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Hyannis Yacht Club. He was a former member of the Cape Cod Corvette Club.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., So. Yarmouth, Mass., on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 at 7 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 7 p.m. Interment will be private.

Cricco, Carl A., Sr.
Cricco, Carl A., Sr., 70 of West Dennis died unexpectedly at his home Monday Sept. 13, 2010. He was the husband of Joyce A. (Dudek) Cricco.
Born in Hoboken, NJ, Mr. Cricco served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1961. He then owned and operated his own wallpapering and painting company in New Jersey and on Cape Cod.
Mr. Cricco served on the school board in Ringwood, NJ from 1968 to 1976 and was a member of the Lion's Clubs in Ringwood and Cape Cod chapters from 1968 to 2000.
A member of the Knights of Columbus since 1966, Mr. Cricco was Past Grand Knight of Saint Catherine of Bologna in Ringwood in 1971 and has been a Fourth Degree Knight since 1990.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Cricco is survived by two sons, Joseph Cricco of South Dennis, and Carl Cricco, Jr. of South Yarmouth; three daughters, Christine Ednie of South Dennis, Cara Capalbo of East Greenwich, RI, and Caryn Thornton of West Yarmouth; two sisters, Beatrice Guzzi of Florham Park, NJ, and Raefael Harff of Warwick, PA; ten grandchildren, CJ, Nicholas, Carson, Elizabeth, Melissa, Jennifer, Abigail, Cecilia, Colin & Hanna; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Denise Cricco.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Doctors Reimer, McCoughlin and Malaquias for their professional care.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday Sept. 17 in Saint Pius Tenth Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 16, 2010 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
