Edgar U. Duffney
GRANBY -- Edgar U. Duffney, 81, of 35 West St., died July 3, 1997 at home.
Born in Northampton April 13, 1916, he was the son of the late George and Delia (Dyette) Duffney.
He attended Northampton schools, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Duffney worked for Daniel O'Connell's Sons Construction Co. of Holyoke for 42 years.
He leaves a sister, Delia Steinbock of Northampton; and four grandchildren.

Nellie Gutfinski
NORTHAMPTON -- Nellie M. (Donnis) Gutfinski, 81, of 54 Firethorn Lane, died July 6, 1997 in The Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Born Sept. 22, 1915, in Hatfield, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Josephine (Beckert) Donnis.
A nurse, she worked in hospitals in Boston and Springfield, returning to Northampton to work at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital at the start of World War II, where she acted as a nursing instructor until 1948.
She leaves her husband, Leon Gutfinski; a daughter, Karen Corell of Manhattan, N.Y.; a brother, Bernard Donnis of Hatfield; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday morning from the Czelusniak Funeral Home in Northampton.
Ethel E. Kangas
HADLEY -- Ethel E. (Morano) Kangas, 87, of 102 Rocky Hill Road, died July 5, 1997 at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Born in Fitchburg July 1, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ada (Johnson) Morano.
She leaves a daughter, Janice Kangas of Hadley.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday morning at the Douglass Funeral Service in Amherst.
Charles A. Kuzmeski
SUNDERLAND -- Charles A. Kuzmeski, 72, of 523 Hadley Road, died July 5, 1997 at home.
Born in Leverett July 1, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph and Tekle (Stefan) Kuzmeski.
Mr. Kuzmeski was a longtime Hampshire County Sheriff, retiring in 1984 as a captain from the Hampshire County House of Correction.
He was a farmer in Sunderland and Hadley and had owned the Little John Farm since 1967.
He leaves his wife, Pauline (Vitkauskas) Kuzmeski; two sons, David Kuzmeski of Belchertown and John Kuzmeski of Sunderland; two daughters, Joanne Kuzmeski-Jackson of Sunderland and Shirley Piazza of Pearl River, N.Y.; a brother, Joseph Kuzmeski of Leverett; three sisters, Margaret Barry of Easthampton, Anna Lovejoy of Manchester, Conn., and Mildred Hawley of Coventry, Conn; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday morning from the Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield.
William G. Shorter
SOUTH HADLEY -- William G. Shorter, 50, of South Hadley, died July 4, 1997 in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Born in Miami, Fla., March 21, 1947, he was the son of Martha (Alexander) Shorter of Stuart, Fla., and the late Myron Shorter.
Mr. Shorter was manager of human resources at R.M. Sullivan Transportation in Springfield.
Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, Donna (Charette) Shorter; a son, Ethan W. Shorter of South Hadley; two daughters, Serena M. Willis of Chicopee and Rose A. Shorter of South Hadley; two brothers, Michael Shorter of Stuart, Fla., and M. Lester Shorter of Novato, Calif.; two sisters, Larue Goodwin of Miami and Francis Weaver of New Orleans, La.; and a granddaughter.

Delia H. Baceski
HATFIELD -- Delia H. (Sadoski) Baceski, 82, of 44 King St., died July 7, 1997 in the Elaine Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hadley.
She was the daughter of the late Charles and Julia (Grybko) Sadoski.
Mrs. Baceski had worked as a cook for the Bement School in Deerfield, and as a supervisor for the Meyer Mendelsohn Tobacco Co.
She had been a director of the Hatfield Council on Aging.
Her husband, Joseph F. Baceski, died in 1973.
She leaves two daughters, Nancy A. Kozera of Hatfield and Sandra H. Mitchell of Holyoke; a son, Joseph F. Baceski Jr. of Hatfield; a brother, Charles Sadoski of South Deerfield; two sisters, Sophie Klinker of South Deerfield and Gladys Shattuck of Greenfield; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary F. Buckley
NORTHAMPTON -- Mary (Farrel) Buckley, 82, of 30 Scanlon Ave. in Florence, died July 6, 1997 in the Hampshire County Long Term Care Facility in Leeds.
She was the daughter of the late John and Mabel (Robbins) Farrel.
She had worked as an assistant dietician at the former Northampton State Hospital, retiring in 1986.
She leaves two daughters, Susan Bristol of Florence and Judith Beatty of Bondsville; two sons, James R. Buckley of Easthampton and Charles Buckley of Redwood City, Calif.; two brothers, Alan Farrel of Florida and John Farrel of Monson; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

SOUTH HADLEY -- Rudolph J. Kordek, 83, of 15 Wilson St., died June 6, 1997 in Holyoke Hospital.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Sylvia Kordek.
He had worked for Spalding Sports Worldwide in Chicopee.
He leaves his wife, Ramona (Plezia) Kordek; two brothers, Stanley Kordek of Ware and Zygmond Kordek of Southbridge; and a sister, Jean Kordek of Los Angeles, Calif.

Jennifer Terry
WAKEFIELD, R.I. -- Jennifer Lynn Terry, 19, of Wakefield, a student at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, died June 26, 1997 at Rhode Island Hospital of injuries sustained in an automobile accident 10 days earlier.
The daughter of David L. and Jan (Miltenberger) Terry of Wakefield, she was a lifelong resident of that community.
Ms. Terry, who would have entered her junior year at Mount Holyoke in September, was an honor student with a double major in psychology and education, and a minor in theater. She had planned to be a teacher of disadvantaged students.
She was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church.
Besides her parents, she leaves a brother, Joseph A. Terry of Austin, Texas, and her grandparents, David K. and Betty Jane (Lambert) Mills of Louisville, Ky.
A funeral service was held June 29 in Rhode Island.

Eleanor M. Barna
SOUTH HADLEY -- Eleanor M. (Baker) Barna, 77, of South Hadley, died July 7, 1997 in Holyoke Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Howard and Bertha (Smith) Baker.
She was a trustee of the Gaylord Memorial Library in South Hadley, and a member of the South Hadley Historical Society.
Her husband, Michael J. Barna, died in 1989.
She leaves a son, Jeffrey R. Barna, of South Hadley.

Lucy Beplat
CUMMINGTON -- Lucy Rose (Simonson) Beplat, 83, of Porter Hill Road, died July 3, 1997 in Tucson, Ariz.
She was the daughter of the late Marie and George Simonson.
Mrs. Beplat and her husband of nearly 60 years, James A. Beplat, traveled extensively throughout his military career, living in Germany, Korea, Newfoundland, and several regions in the United States. They spent their summers in Cummington before becoming year-round residents.
Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Jean Mazeau of Acton, Elizabeth Castiglione of Pittsfield, and Dorothy White of Tuscon; a son, James H. Beplat of Katonah, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arnold P. Caplan
PLAINFIELD -- Arnold P. Caplan, 81, of 64 S. Union St., died July 8, 1997 in the Sweetbrook Care Center in Williamstown.
He was the son of the late Oscar and Rose (Dow) Caplan.
He attended Texas schools until the age of 12, when he was awarded a scholarship to the Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia. He later attended the graduate program at the Julliard School of Music in New York City.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Caplan, a violinist, played in the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City for 48 years, retiring as first violin in 1986.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Irene (Jordan) Caplan; a daughter, Rosebeth Miller of Williamstown; three sons, Joel Caplan of White Plains, N.Y., Rowen Caplan of Plainfield and David Caplan of New Rochelle, N.Y.; two brothers, Julian Caplan of Montclair, N.J., and Mischa Caplan of Houston; and five grandchildren.

Morris B. Fisher
SOUTHAMPTON -- Morris B. Fisher, 90, of Russellville Road, died July 7, 1997 at home.
He was the son of the late Walter and Mindel (Rice) Fisher.
Mr. Fisher had owned and operated the former M.B. Fisher Tailor Shop in Easthampton for many years, retiring in 1970.
He leaves his wife, Ruth (Sheldon) Fisher; two sons, Charles M. Fisher of Southampton and Wayne S. Fisher of Westford; two daughters, Barbara R. Backstrom of Shady Cove, Ore., and Judy M. Binsky of Southampton; a sister, Evelyn Epstein of Bloomfield, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
