Mary Ann Jandzinski

HATFIELD -- Mary Ann Jandzinski, 80, of 88 Bridge St., died July 8 in The Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

She was the daughter of the late Egnacy and Catherine (Walecki) Jandzinski.

She was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Miss Jandzinski had worked for many years as a waitress for the former Howard Johnson's restaurants in Hatfield and Northampton.

She leaves a sister, Clementine Jandzinski of Hatfield, and a nephew, Daniel Jandinski of Northampton.

Walter J. Dembinske

CHICOPEE - Walter J. "Tucky" Dembinske, 65, of Chicopee, died May 13 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, S.C.

He was a truck driver for Local 404 in Springfield and owned Memory Lane Video in Chicopee. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a former member of the Empire One Racquetball Club.

He leaves a son, Martin Dembinske, of Holyoke; two daughters, Paula Dembinske of Chicopee and Erin Mitchell of West Springfield; his wife, Shirley (Sullivan) Dembinske of Holyoke; two brothers, Harold Dembinske of Palos Verdes, Calif. and Robert Dembinske of Somers, Conn.; a sister, Rose Mary Mahon of South Hadley; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A son, Michael, died in 1989.

Celia Russell

NORTHAMPTON - Celia (Jaskolka) Russell, 81, of 4 Linden St., died May 15 at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

She worked for many years in the art and music department at Forbes Library.

She leaves her husband of 57 years, John M. Russell; two sons, John P. Russell of Southbury, Conn. and Michael J. Russell of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Chester Jaskolka of Enfield, Conn.; two grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

MONGEAU SERVICE

CLERMONT, Fla. - A memorial service for Gabriel E. "Bus" Mongeau will be held May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Village Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg.

Mr. Mongeau, of Clermont, formerly of Williamsburg and Northampton, died Oct. 5 in South Lake Memorial Hospital in Clermont.

Mary Ann Hinckley

BUZZARDS BAY - Mary Ann (Powers) Hinckley, 84, of Buzzards Bay, formerly of Hadley, died June 14 at home after a long illness.

Mrs. Hinckley served as a Wave in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

She leaves her husband, Harry Hinckley; a son, Michael Hinckley of Buzzards Bay; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.

Doris C. Rose

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Doris C. (Laflam) Rose, 76, of Cincinnati, formerly of Easthampton, died June 12 in the Maple Knoll Long Term Care Facility in Cincinnati.

She leaves a daughter, Bonnie Brennan of Hamilton, Ohio; three brothers, Peter Laflam and Robert Laflam, both of Oklawaha, Fla., and Thomas Laflam of Silver Springs, Fla.;four sisters, Rita Gingras and Eva Poudrier, both of Silver Springs, Margaret Laprade of Oklawaha, and Arlene Sedlak of Easthampton; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Anna E. Russell

WARE - Anna E. (Dubay) Russell, 82, of Ware, formerly of Amherst, died June 14 in Mary Lane Hospital in Ware.

Mrs. Russell had worked as a stitcher at Seven Sisters Inc. in Ware for many years, retiring in 1977.

Her husband, Elmer A. Russell, died in 1983.

She leaves a son, Charles F. Russell and a daughter, Judith Allard, both of Ware; two brothers, John Dubay of Gill, and Harry Dubay of Ana, Texas; four sisters, Elizabeth Kamansky of Leverett, Julia Laviolette of Palmer, Jeanette Paprocki of Steubenville, N.Y., and VioreneBobbit of St. Louis, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

William Russell Jr., was area store owner, horseman

HADLEY - William F. Russell Jr., 79, of 3 Sunrise Drive, died June 14 in The Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Russell was a well-known business owner in Amherst. Russell's Package Store, owned first by his father, William F. Russell Sr., then by him, was the first business in town to hold an alcohol license. The store Tuesday is owned by the third generation of Russells.

During the Depression, Mr. Russell and his father distributed food to fraternities and sororities at Amherst College and the University of Massachusetts.

An avid horseman, he was respected in the business as an owner and a breeder of quality thoroughbreds, and was recognized at tracks throughout New England, New York, and Maryland.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Rafaella "Vi" (Natale) Russell; two sons, Gerald V. Russell, and William F. Russell III, both of Amherst; three daughters, Maureen H. Saltis of Easthampton, Madeline Carol Pratt of Amherst, and R. Ann Russell of Bernardston; a brother, Robert Russell of Belchertown; a sister, Eleanor Jolly of Cape Cod; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Of Florence, August 16, 2003, Donald W. Duffy, 53, of 86 Beacon Street. Survived by his wife Patricia (Stanton) Duffy, his mother Rita (Diemand) Duffy, his son Stephen R. Duffy, his daughters Karyn K. Duffy and Kaileen R. Duffy, his brothers Harold and James Duffy, his sisters Debra Duffy, Dorothy Wills, Cynthia Goulet and Sandy Lebeau, and several nieces and nephews. GOODWIN
Of Hadley, Anna M. Goodwin, 83, died Sunday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. She leaves a son John Goodwin, two daughters, Coleen Durocher and Ruth DeSilviera; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Services are private. AMHERST FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.

KATHERICUS
of Northampton, August 18, William E. "Sturgeon" Kathericus. Husband of the late Lillian V. (Bouthlette) Kathericus. Beloved father of Lorraine A. Hughes. Devoted grandfather and great-grandfather. The funeral will be from PEASE FUNERAL HOME, 425 Prospect St., Wednesday at 8:30am with a Mass of Christian Burial at St Mary's Church at 10:30am Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery.

MURPHY
Philip E. Murphy, 94, a former resident of Wilbraham for over 45 years and Chatham, MA, died early Sunday morning at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center. He was born in Greenfield, and graduated from Greenfield High School, Valley Forge Military Academy and Fordham University. Mr. Murphy formerly served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was the former owner and operator of P.E. Murphy Opticians of Springfield, and Murphy Opticians of Chatham. Most recently he was employed with Murphy's Spectacle Shoppe from which he retired in 1993. He was a member of the Guild Opticians of America, Wilbraham and Quaboag Country Clubs, and a long-time parishioner of St. Cecilia's Church, Wilbraham. Mr. Murphy was the husband of 56 years to the late Helen (Palin) Murphy who died in July of 1996. He leaves three sons; Dennis P. Murphy and his wife Nancy, of Huntington, Barry P. Murphy and his wife, Cynthia of Mendon, MA and Timothy J. Murphy, and his wife Suzanne, of Wilbraham. He also leaves, 7 grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law, Francis T. Buckley Sr., of Hampden, 1 sister-in-law, Eleanor S. Murphy of Holyoke, and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grandnephews. His funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 8:30am from Sampson' Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Cecilia's Church, Wilbraham, with Rites of Committal to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

THORP
Clarice B. Thorp, 90, of Amherst died at the Center for Extended Care of Amherst on August 15, 2003.
She was born on October 5, 1912 in New York City.
She was the daughter of William and Molly Brows. She was married to the late Willard L. Thorp, a noted economist in the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration and former professor at Amherst College. She attended local schools in New York City and graduated from the New York University School of Law She briefly practiced law when she met her husband to be. The Thorps lived in Washington DC for many years, as well as Paris, France where Mr. Thorp was employed by the United States Government in various capacities.
They retired and moved to Pelham many years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Thorp were active members in Pelham Town Government.
She was a member and chairperson of the Pelham Board of Selectman.
She is survived by her niece, Joan R. Gould of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and stepdaughter, Barbara Gerhard, Los Cruces, New Mexico.
THERE ARE NO CALLING HOURS and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

GLADSTONE
Amherst. Shirley Gladstone (nee Kivowitz), 82, died at home on Thursday.
She is survived by her husband, Saul Gladstone, 2 sons: Abraham I. Gladstone of Pelham, Dr. Samuel Gladstone of Amherst, 2 daughters: Ora L. Gladstone of Newton, MA and Rana Rappaport of Westboro, MA. 2 brothers: Jack Kivowitz of Hallandale, FL and Bernie Kivowitz of Rockville Center, NY, as well as 1 sister, Hilda Fass of Englishtown, NJ, and 9 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1pm at the Jewish Community Center in Amherst followed by burial at JCA cemetery in Shutesbury, MA.
Chiva services are Sunday, 7pm-8:30pm, Monday- Thursday, 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm and Saturday, 8:30pm-10pm at the family home at 1260 South East Street, Amherst.

WALKER
Pelham-John R. Walker, 84, of 76 Amherst Road, Pelham, died August 13, 2003 at home with his family by his side.
Born in Watertown, MA, October 7, 1918, he was the son of Paul H. and Eleanor C. (Smith) Walker.
A graduate from Oxford High School, he studied landscape design and gardening at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture before reporting for active duty with the US Army in World War II.
He married the former Mary F. Conk of Oklahoma at Camp Breckinridge, KY, on August 4, 1943.
They had just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary which was celebrated with his family at his home on Amherst Road.
He leaves his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Cronk Waler of Pelham, three sons, Robert of South Orleans, MA, Charles of Seattle, Washington, and Daniel of Belchertown, MA. Two daughters, Elizabeth Dwight of Whately, MA.
Margaret McDonald of Leverett, MA, a brother, James Walker of Oxford, MA and a sister, Ruth Davis of Rutland, VT.
His brother, Paul Walker predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday August 16, 2003 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 365 North Pleasant Street, Amherst.
Burial will be a the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church and Hospice of Hampshire County.

Josephine M. Karwoski of Holyoke. She was a communicant of Mater Dolorosa Church, a member of the St. Anne's Society and the Polish Womens Alliance Group 141. Widow of the late Charles Karwoski who passed away in 1986. She leaves 2 sons: Stanley of Maine, and Philip of South Hadley, MA, 1 daughter: Dianne Bombard of Haydenville, MA, 1 brother: John Barczynski of Ludlow, 2 sisters: Ann Bednarz of CT and Mary Barczynski of Hopkinton, MA.
Funeral is Saturday at CZELUSNIAK FUNERAL HOME, HOLYOKE.
Funeral mass at 10am in Mater Dolorosa Church. Burial at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley.

BERNICHE
Of Southampton, Francis John Berniche, Sr., age 86, of 7 David Street, died on Wednesday, October 8 in Northampton at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
He was a retired 28 year employee from the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Leeds.
Mr Berniche was also a veteran of World War II and was a sergeant with the United States Army, Battery C of the 226th Field Artillery Battalion, having fought in the battle at Ryukyus in the Southern Philippines.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Ann (Kuzemchak) Berniche of Southampton: his loving children; James William Berniche and Beverly Francis Ann Berniche of Easthampton; 2 sisters, Helen Johnson of Haydenville and Theresa Lyons of Florence, grandfather to Kimberly Weir and Jesse Pogodzinski, great grandfather to Jake and Maxwell Weir and Annah Pogodzinski; father-in-law to Judy M. (Dacosta) Berniche and many nieces and nephews.
A son, Francis John Berniche, Jr. predeceased him on April 18, 2001.
Funeral Services with military honors will be held on Tuesday October 14 with a Liturgy Mass held at 10am at the Immaculate Conception Church.
CALLING HOURS WILL BE MONDAY 4PM-8PM AT THE GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, 18 Adams Street, Easthampton.
Burial will follow the Mass and be held at the Center Cemetery in Southampton.
Donations may be made to the VNA Hospice Alliance, 168 Industrial Drive, Northampton, MA 01060 or to any charity of choice.

FORSANDER
Robert Oscar Forsander, 71, Korean War Veteran, of 199 Storey Avenue, Newburyport, formerly of 66 North Maple Street, Florence, husband of Phyllis (Halket) Forsander.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11am at the CZELUSNIAK FUNERAL HOME, 173 North Street, Northampton, followed by interment in Spring Grove Cemetery in the Florence section of Northampton.
CALLING HOURS AT THE CZELUSNIAK FUNERAL HOME WILL BE FRIDAY FROM 4PM-7PM.

RUSSELL
A memorial service will be held Sunday from 11am to 1pm at the Blue Rail Restaurant on Route 9 in Hadley, for Richard M. "Russ" Russell, 39, who died September 12th at home.

VAUGHN
In Woodbridge, VA, October 6, 2003, Bernard J. Vaughn, 89, of Manassis and formerly of Florence.
Survived by a son John J. Vaughn, a daughter Barbara Fontana, four grandchildren: Lauren Trono, John Vaughn, Gregory and Paul Fontana; a sister: Kathleen Samson. The Funeral will be Saturday morning 10:30am from the AHEARN FUNERAL HOME, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Annunciation Church at 11am.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
