SALTMAN
Holyoke - Dr. David Saltman, 90, of 37 Lindbergh Ave., died at his home on June 29. Born in Holyoke, he had practiced dentistry in that city for 50 years before retiring in 1987. Dr. Saltman was an alumnus of Holyoke High School, Amherst College, class of 1934, and the University of Maryland Dental School from which he received the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1938. In 1941, he was called up to active duty in the U.S. Army. Assigned to the 86th Combat Field Hospital as Chief Dental Surgeon, he saw action on Saipan and Okinawa, landing on the latter island with hospital personnel two days after the Marine invasion began. At the conclusion of the Okinawa campaign, he was promoted to the rank of Major and appointed Division Dental Surgeon for the 27th Infantry Division. Two day before the formal signing of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay, he flew into Japan with his unit to help set up the medical and dental facilities in advance of the American occupation forces. While stationed in Japan, he was in charge of Army dental facilities and was also a member of the medical team that examined, and when possible, provided care and treatment for survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Dr. Saltman was awarded two Combat Stars, the President's Citation, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque and upon his discharge, the U.S. Medal of Japanese Occupation. He also served during the Ryukyus Campaign. After resuming his practice in Holyoke, he helped organize the Dental Division of Holyoke's Child Welfare Department and, for many years, served on the staff of the Skinner Clinic where he volunteered his professional services along with a number of other local dentists. He was also a staff member of the Holyoke Hospital and the Holyoke Soldiers' Home. In 1966 he was appointed to the Mass. Child Welfare Commission. He and his wife, Ellen, were world travelers who delighted local audiences with their 'travelogues' illustrated with slides taken by Dr. Saltman, an accomplished amateur photographer. In 1981, they lived on a kibbutz in Israel for several months while he worked as a volunteer dentist under a special program designed to meet (what was then) a critical shortage of dentists in Israel. The program, set up under the auspices of the Israeli government, was sponsored and coordinated in the United States by Alpha Omega, a national Jewish Dental Fraternity. Dr. Saltman was a past president of the former Holyoke Jewish Community Center and a member of both Sons of Zion and Rodphey Sholom Synagogues. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, a member of the Valley District Dental Society, and the Fraternal Order of Masons. He helped to support and further the work of numerous communal and cultural organizations both locally and nationally, in many cases serving on their boards of directors and/or as a trustee. He provided major funding for several local medical facilities. Besides Ellen, his wife of 62 years, he leaves two sons, William and his wife Joanne of Belchertown, and Paul, of Chicopee; two grandchildren, Daniel (and his mother Catie Burnett) and Elyse (and her mother, Joy Burnell); a sister Mary Fogel and her husband, Daniel of Canton; a brother-in-law, Gerald Shirley, of Tuckahoe, NY; a niece and three nephews. MATHERS
Of Williamsburg, June 24, 2003, John Mathers, 70, of 74 Nash Hill Road left this world to be at peace in a beautiful new world where pain is not felt. He is survived by his wife, Judith (Cushman) Mathers, 3 sons: Jeff, Mark and Andrew Mathers all of Williamsburg, a daughter Robin Lynn of Williamsburg, a brother Charles Mathers of Williamsburg, 5 sisters Winona Lockwood of Williamsburg, Lily Rustemeyer of Plainfield, Esther Sousa of Attleboro, Lucy Michaud of Bristol, CT and Ann Mathers of Florence, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. John lived his life on the street that he knew well. He had 8 siblings and knew what working hard was all about. He loved the woods: his horse, cows, when the family had cows: the smell of cut hay, and most of all, his family. His children Jeff, Mark, Robin and Andrew were loved and cherished by their father. He loved when they were 'home' or just visiting. Always happy to help them and offer advice, we will all miss his personal take on life and the funny sayings he had for almost every aspect of life. He could fix anything and often did. The fields of hay he could not cut this year, the household chores he had to relinquish, oven driving his truck, simple things, and simple enjoyment. We remember him doing all the things he loved, and cannot count all the ways he has left his personal touch. His grandchildren were as much a part of his happiness as his own children. Happily, they spent a lot of time with him. Aimee, Lora, Nicole, Dan, and Mikaela: such joy they brought. We are already having daily 'conversations' with John, cutting a field of hay or commenting on the next day's weather. Jeff is doing all the things he needs to do to get through the day and he has set the tone for all of us. Be at Peace, with Love, Judy. The Funeral and burial were private. A Celebration of Life will be held later. THE AHEARN FUNERAL HOME IN NORTHAMPTON is in charge of arrangements.
